Mother Earth has got such a wide variety of places of different moods to offer us! From romantic sea beaches, enchanting forests, sparkling blue water of the sea and the oceans to island of spooky headless dolls, land of poisonous vipers or the terrifying mass-suicide forests, everything adorns the crown like precious gemstones! So much that I had a very hard time filtering out only 10 among hundreds of such places which are all very bizarre and very famous in their own unique way! So here is my list which consists of places from around the globe that are spooky as well as the ones which, although have scientific explanations to their unique characteristics, are insanely unnerving to the core!

  • Sea of Stars in Vaadhoo Island in Maldives:

The Vaadhoo island of Maldives is a quiet and peaceful vacation spot with less than 550 inhabitants living on this island.  But this island has something surreal as well as fascinating to offer to the tourists! How about a walk on the beach with stars strewn all around you? If you are not careful enough you may even step on one! You heard it right! The Sea of Stars on the Vaadhoo Island is a world famous place, which has got its name from the thousands of luminescent phytoplankton known as dinoflagellates. These phytoplankton are micro-organisms which when reacts with oxygen in the air gives out luminescence or light energy. The result is a sparkling sea beach, called Sea of Stars!

  • The Island of Dolls, Xochimilco, Mexico:

No, this is not a scene from the horror movie Annabelle but is the actual view of what one of the scariest places in the whole World looks like! What was once a beautiful garden is now home to mutilated and scary looking dolls with severed limbs, scooped out eyes and headless bodies. Needless to say, the history is one hell of a tragedy! In 1950, Julian Santana Barrera, the sole inhabitant of the island, found the dead body of a young girl floating in a canal surrounding the island. A little while later, he found the girl’s doll floating nearby. Assuming it belonged to the dead girl, he hung it from a tree to please the girl’s soul. As the days passed, Julian was possessed by madness and guilt from not being able to save the girl. He took hold of any doll or parts of dolls that he found anywhere, trashes, dumps, and hung them from the trees. Over 50 years he collected over 1500 such horrifying looking things!

The island is mostly deserted but going by the one or two local people, these dolls start moving and talking at night. The night-time experience is mortifying and gross, which is further due to the fact that Julian Barrera was found dead in the exact same spot in the same canal, where the girl was found.

If creepy crawlies make you feel uncomfortable then you may very well skip this one point! The Snake Island, off the coast of Brazil in the Atlantic Ocean is home only to an insanely high number of poisonous snakes, including the critically endangered Pit Viper(this one eats only birds! baffling right!) which has made this island impossible for human habitation. Some 11,000 years ago, the snakes got trapped when the sea levels rose and separated the island from the mainland of Brazil. Faced with isolation and threat of life, these creatures evolved to become terrifying predators, often hunting in the treetops to strike down flying birds. Not only that, they adapted their venoms to become five times stronger, capable enough to melt human flesh!

With around 8000 corpses and 1252 mummies lining the walls, this catacomb is definitely not for the faint hearted! The dead bodies of the “friars” interred into the catacombs are preserved with an ancient procedure and are set in poses. Some are set in a praying position and some are seated peacefully in rocking chairs. Men, women, virgins, priests, monks, children, professionals all occupy different sections of this catacomb. The corpses are all dressed to their mighty best and are displayed as in a museum. The last corpse was that of a 2 year old girl, Rosalia Lombardo admitted in the 1920s, whose body still looks remarkably fresh due to the ancient embalming procedure. How about taking a visit?

Looks like someone has just been murdered at this spot right? Well, Nature sometimes likes playing such crazy jokes on us! And this is one of it! The blood-like “thing” seeping out of the huge Taylor Glacier of Antarctica for the past 5 million years is sure to unnerve many of us. According to geologists, the “blood” is nothing but a plume of water extremely rich in salt content and tainted with iron oxide. This iron-rich (Iron renders the water red) water seeps out profusely from the fissures of the glacier and the hyper salinity keeps the water from freezing, making it a frightening display of blood flowing out from the glacier.

If you have ever imagined hell as a blazing inferno, you might want to take a look at what it may look like or even wish to take a visit! In the middle of the Karakum Desert, near the village of Derweze(meaning door), lies a huge crater of diameter 69 meters and depth of 30 meters, blazing furiously like hell. This place was discovered by a group of Soviet scientists who in 1971 began searching for a suitable oil field and landed upon this place. It first it appeared to be a substantial oil reserve but as soon as they started drilling, the entire ground collapsed into a big crater releasing huge quantity of methane gas. To avoid the spilling of this poisoning natural gas to nearby areas, the scientists thought it was best to burn it off. Ironically, it was estimated that it would be a few weeks before the whole gas would burn out, but its 2018 now since 1971 and it is still burning.

What do astronauts do?

Any manned spacecraft which is launched into space is supported by the crew which consists of astronauts who perform specific duties.

Mission Specialists

Mission specialists are the people who are specially trained in a detailed way about onboard systems, mission requirements, various machines and their uses and operations and supporting equipment etc. For the coordination of operations among the crew who does planning, consumables usage and, payload operations, mission specialist takes this responsibility. They also perform extravehicular activities (EVAs), operate the remote manipulator system, spacewalks, and are responsible for payloads and specific experiment operations.

Commander and Pilot Astronaut Duties

The pilot astronaut performs the duty of commander and works as a pilot of Space Shuttle and International Space Station. During a mission, the onboard responsibility of vehicle, crew, mission success and safety of flight, rests on the shoulders of the commander. The pilot works as an assistant to the commander and helps in operating the vehicle. The pilot also assists the commander to deploy and retrieve the satellites utilizing the remote manipulator system and in other payload operations.

Payload Specialists

They are people other than NASA astronauts, who perform specialized onboard duties. They also include foreign nationals. They are added to the shuttle crew if there is a mission which requires more than the minimum crew size of five members. Among these additional crew members, the first priority is given to qualified NASA mission specialists. The sponsors from the other countries or the designated payload sponsor nominate the person as the additional payload specialist. These payload specialists are trained in specific fields as per the requirement.

Astronaut Selection and Training:

NASA releases applications for Astronaut Candidate Program once in a while. Applicants for the Astronaut Candidate Program must meet the basic education requirements of NASA. Following the preliminary screening of applications, a week-long process of personal interviews, medical screening, and orientation are required for both civilian and military applicants under final consideration. Once the applicants are finalized, they are notified about the selection.

Career as an Astronaut

Selected applicants are designated as Astronaut Candidates and are assigned to the Astronaut Office at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, Texas. The training period for all the selected Astronaut Candidates is of 2 years. During this time they will participate in the basic Astronaut Candidate training program, which is designated to develop the knowledge and skills required for formal mission training upon selection for a flight. Astronaut Candidates who are experienced in jet piloting maintain proficiency in NASA aircraft during their training.

Career as an Astronaut

As part of the Astronaut Candidate training program, candidates are required to complete military water survival before beginning their flying syllabus and become SCUBA qualified to prepare them for spacewalk training. During their first month of training, all Astronaut Candidates should pass a swimming test. They must swim 3 lengths of a 25-meter pool without stopping, and then swim 3 lengths of the pool in a flight suit and tennis shoes with no time limit. In addition to these rigorous training, the microgravity environment is created in a modified jet aircraft that produce periods of weightlessness for about 20 seconds before the aircraft returns to the original altitude. Astronaut Candidates are exposed to such environment to make them ready for the zero gravity atmospheres in the space and this sequence is repeated up to 40 times in a day.

Career as an Astronaut

Completion of all the above-mentioned training along with Robotics skills training, training in different foreign languages, and aircraft flight readiness training will mark the end of the Astronaut Candidate training program. Final selections will depend upon satisfactory completion of the training and evaluation period by all the Astronaut Candidates.

Candidates who successfully complete the training and evaluation along with nationality status are selected as astronauts. Candidates who are not selected as astronauts may be placed in other positions within NASA, depending upon the workforce requirements in the other departments.

Astronaut Formal Training:

After completion of the Astronaut Candidate training program, the selected astronauts begin their formal training program by reading training manuals along-side with computer-based training lessons about the vehicle systems and their mechanisms. After this, the next step in the training process is to train the astronauts about the various systems in the spacecraft. They are trained in such a way that they should be able to operate all the systems, recognize malfunctions, and to perform corrections if needed. Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) provides controlled neutral buoyancy operations in the facility water tank to simulate the zero-g or weightless condition that is experienced by the crew during space flight.

5 ways to kick-start your CAT preparation

0
MBA prepration

I have been preparing for M.B.A. entrance exams since 2 years now and shall soon be joining a decent b-school and therefore, I think I am in a position to share with you my opinion on how you can plan to start your preparation to crack these exams.

M.B.A. stands for Masters of Business Administration and is currently the most sought-after “Masters” degree in India. Although most of the colleges, including the government colleges like I.I.M.s, offer a Diploma degree in Management whereas the I.I.Ts, X.I.M.B., Narsee Monjee Mumbai e.t.c.  offers an M.B.A. degree, there is not much difference in the curriculum. In the past 5 years, innumerable number of students as well as professionals, from varied backgrounds such as Business, Engineering and Technology, Science, Commerce and even Arts and Medicine, have opted out from their own field of study to pursue MBA.

5 ways to kick-start your CAT preparation

Just a month ago, I appeared for the Group Discussion and personal interview test of an esteemed b-school and guess what, I was accompanied by a doctor and two Charter Accountants, among a bunch of Commerce and Engineering graduates. Hence, you can already imagine that the entire process is, in a way, getting tougher and tougher every year! At present we have a whooping 5,20,000 MBA students passing out of the b-schools in our country this year. Needless to say, due to this over-crowding, the level of difficulty of the various management entrances such as CAT, XAT, IIFT etc are increasing every year!

So, how should you plan and go ahead with your preparation? How do you manage your most valuable resource, which is time, to reap yourself the maximum benefits? Let’s see how:

  • Clarify your purpose for doing an MBA:

Before you start off with any study material and roll out your preparation process, take some time out and ask yourself, why you want to do an MBA? Let me tell you something. Your panelist may not ask you to introduce yourself, but no panelist in any Indian b-school will ever skip this one question: Why MBA? You may belong to any background, let’s say Pharmaceuticals, but why you are willing to leave your own field and change over to Business Studies is something you should be extremely clear about! Jot down those points. An MBA degree is rewarding, stimulating and ensures a professional with high remuneration, but the relevance of MBA in your career is what you should be able to explain with sound logic.

  • Start with a mock test:

Let me assume you have not yet started your preparation. So why am I being crazy and asking you to take a mock test now? Because ALL MANAGEMENT ENTRANCES ARE APTITUDE TESTS! Aptitude tests are based on what you have learned in Mathematics till class X, your logical abilities and critical thinking, your innate ability to take the optimum best decision and your verbal knowledge and analysis power. We must remember that most of these qualities we already possess by the virtue of our schooling, reading habit etc and so, we can only polish them in order to stay ahead of others.

So, with absolutely zero preparation when you take a mock test, you get an idea of your strengths and weaknesses. There are plenty of websites that offer you free mock tests. Take one of them with complete honesty. This is the first step in your preparation for these exams.

  •  Concept building:

Now that you have a clear idea of your strengths and weaknesses, I suggest you start focusing on your weak area.

If you are weak in the Quant section:

If you have not enrolled in any institute for CAT and OMET (Other Management Entrance Exam) preparation, grab the Quant material of any well-known institute as well as keep a Quant book, such as books by Sarvesh Verma and Arun Sharma with you. Then comes the most vital part, READ ALL THE THEORY related to a topic before delving straight into the exercise. This is extremely important to build a strong base. Then go over to the exercise.

5 ways to kick-start your CAT preparation

If you are weak in Reading Comprehension and Verbal Ability:

This section is largely dependent on your exposure to the world of English language throughout your life, your reading habit so far and if you can interpret a passage after you read it. But if you do not have a reading habit, you can start reading a quality English newspaper daily. This will not only improve your command over English but also improve your general knowledge, which is extremely important for SNAP, IIFT,  XAT etc. You can pick up a novel by any good author and try to finish it within a week. YouTube videos on discussion on social issues in English, also helps a lot.

But most importantly, if you are weak in this section, you MUST practice at least two comprehensions a day, ten Verbal Ability questions and carry out a thorough analysis of your mistakes.

If you are weak in Logical Reasoning:

You can crack this section if you make online puzzle solving your hobby! Solve riddles, math puzzles whenever you get time. As you do this regularly, your brain automatically gets used to find ways to analyse the complications of a puzzle much faster by disintegrating the problem into simpler parts. Practice around 5 questions of logical reasoning every day from actual CAT papers, institute study materials or from online preparation sites to get an edge over others. Analyse, where you went wrong and why.

If you are weak in Data Interpretation:

Data Interpretation is all about being smart with numbers and calculation and being able to see through data and the mobility of data. You can start with learning some standard calculations such as the squares and cubes up to 25, square roots and cube roots from 1 to 10, percentages etc. You can go through any material or the Data Interpretation book by Arun Sharma, from where you must practice at least 3-4 Data Interpretation questions at least 3 or 4 days a week.

If you are weak in Decision making:

Decision making is the trickiest part in XAT test and I have seen a lot of my fellow aspirants, who are 95 percentilers in Quant or Logical Reasoning, to struggle haplessly in this section. Decision making is the innate ability to take the optimum best decision in a crisis situation. I say “optimum” because the other options may not be wrong, but they may not be the best. So, how do you judge? There are some golden rules: The decision you take should never be too lenient or too aggressive or sound too people-pleasing and MUST be the best decision that seem even with respect to all the stake-holders in question. In short, balanced.

But that’s easier said, than done. Hence, I suggest you to get hold of reasoning book by Piyush Bhardwaj, published by Arihant Publishers or solve decision making questions from actual XAT papers.

Now, you must try your mighty best to practice all the sections every day, with more emphasis on your weak areas.

5 ways to kick-start your CAT preparation

  • Time Management:

CAT is no rocket science! You can solve all the 100 questions if you sit with it the whole day. But the real challenge is to solve the questions within the stipulated time, keeping your mind relaxed and without panicking. And hence, time management is the MOST IMPORTANT factor.

Let’s talk about the quant section; you are given 60 minutes to solve 34 questions. So you have basically 1.76 minutes to solve all the questions in this section. If you leave out 16 questions and solve 20, still you are left with only 3 minutes to solve each. Hence, you should focus on two things; one, you must time yourself and train yourself to solve each quant question in 2 minutes time and you must pick out the easiest ones and solve them first. Come on, you are not given Brownie points to solve harder questions isn’t it!

As of reading comprehension, you must take 15 minutes for each passage; don’t rush through it, read and analyse, because it is more important to get your answers correct than to get a bunch of wrong answers.

Similarly, you must train yourself to solve each Logical Reasoning or Data Interpretation question under 10 -12 minutes.

As for Decision Making, it is very important to read and analyse the case-let and understand what the question is actually asking before answering it. Hence rushing through this section is a very bad idea. In XAT, if you can answer around 12-14 decision making questions correctly, congratulations, you have secured above 92 percentile in this section.

  • Mock Tests and Mock Analysis:

Perhaps, the most important part of this entire preparation phase is taking mock tests or more importantly, mock analysis. I can guarantee you; you will learn a lot more from mock analysis than you will ever learn from any other sources. Take 2 mocks every month, during your initial phase of preparation and 2- 3 days for the full analysis of every mock. Go through all your mistakes, solve all your unanswered questions and even see through the ones you got correct. If necessary, make notes or copy down any new concept that you learn through mock analysis.

During the later phase, you must take 5-6 mock tests in every month but take care to see, that you don’t skip a mock analysis before going over to the next mock. Before you face CAT, you must have taken 15 – 18 mocks and have completed their full analysis. Moreover, your mock test and mock analysis must cover all the entrance exams you are aiming for, not only CAT.

I must mention here, that during the initial months, your mock results may be miserable, but you must not give up. Remember, only proper analysis of mocks can improve your percentiles and with time, you will see how easily you soar and get a score of above 100- 120 in mock tests.

5 ways to kick-start your CAT preparation

I suggest you maintain a diary or a separate folder in your computer where you keep a screenshot of all your mock results and analyse your performance.

I would like to conclude by saying that the preparation of management entrances such as CAT, XAT should be made into a habit and cannot be achieved by the work of one day or one month. Regular reading of good novels, English newspapers, critically analyzing the newspaper or magazine articles, juggling the quant formulae in your mind when you are free as well as solving math puzzles daily are some of the immensely valuable habits that can make you crack these exams easily as well as mould you into a more qualified individual.

As with almost everything around, the quantity of water you drink in a day is very individualistic and is highly dependent on your body weight, B.M.I. and other factors such as any particular disorder you are suffering from. While 8 glasses per day is the minimum, you can definitely go beyond that since the more you hydrate yourself, the healthier you will be. Now, this is one substance that we constantly intake and is absolutely devoid of any taste! So, if you are on the lookout to spice things up a little, just add a few sprigs of mint, or a slice of orange, or squeeze a little lemon or do whatever it takes to drink as much water as you can.

Apart from the benefits that have already been addressed, we enlist the top ten benefits that this wonder liquid can provide you –

  • Improves digestion and constipation

Drinking lots of water will boost your metabolism and maintain the proper functioning of your gastrointestinal tract. When this happens, your body can break up food into finer particles and your stomach efficiently uses the bile juice from your pancreas, thus preventing any chances of suffering from acidity.

Inadequate water causes extreme dehydration which triggers your colon to extract water from the stools accumulated in your body, making the stools hard and very difficult to pass. Thus, water saves you from the problem of constipation.

But there are certain rules! You must not drink water while you are having your meals. You may drink before and after your meals but when you drink water along with having meals, this water interferes with the digestion process and inhibits food particles from getting broken down into smaller particles. And as for constipation problem, have a glass full of warm water first thing in the morning and it will definitely help you to have a better bowel movement.

  • Helps in weight loss

Sounds unbelievable right?! Or maybe you have come across lifestyle blogs asking you to drink a glass of water before a meal but didn’t really consider it seriously! Mix one teaspoon of the ground flax seeds dust in a glass full of warm water and have it as the first thing in the morning! This will boost your metabolism greatly as well as your bowel movement. All this will definitely aid in weight loss!

  • Effect treatment for headaches

A recent study by a renowned institute of neurology shows that dehydration is a leading cause of persistent headache and migraine. This happens because of a sharp drop in the volume of blood due to lack of water, which causes lesser amount of blood and oxygen to flow to the blood vessels of our brains. This causes the blood vessels to dilate and cause continuous pain.

Drinking plenty of water will help maintain the fluidity of blood in your bodies and proper blood circulation leading to a decrease in the intensity of headaches. Also, indigestion and acidity is often known to cause headache which can also be controlled by drinking plenty of water.

  • Improves kidney function

Health Benefits of Drinking more than 8 glasses of water everydayYour kidneys are the filters in your body and perform numerous crucial functions such as passing away toxic wastes through urine and also filtering blood before sending it back to the heart. Since flushing out wastes is the main function of kidneys, hence obviously we need to drink a lot of water to keep them healthy and help them in efficient flushing out of wastes. Drinking insufficient quantity of water is the major reason for kidney stones and dark colored urine, signifying kidney disease.

  • Acts as a natural anti-ageing remedy!

Health Benefits of Drinking more than 8 glasses of water everydayIs she mad? You might be thinking this right now! But to bust your disbelief I must tell you that before you reach out to expensive anti-ageing creams and complicated D.I.Y.s, drinking enough quantity of water should actually be counted as the first step towards your anti-ageing skin care regime! This one particular moisturizer that nature provides you is free of cost! And found in abundance! Water washes away the toxic wastes which are responsible for skin inflammations and acne. Try drinking 10 glasses of water every day and this will definitely help to keep your skin fresh and glowing.

  • Boosts intelligence

Sounds shocking right? Recent observations have proved that there is a strong link between water and cognitive ability in a person. Just like every cell and body tissue needs to stay well hydrated to function properly, so does your brain. Mental performance and memory power can skyrocket when your brain is hydrated enough to function properly.

  • Strengthens immune system

Water contains plenty of oxygen and so drinking lots of water will ensure that all the cells and tissues in your body are well oxygenated, which in turn will make your muscles and organs work better. Your internal system works best when you have your internals fir and healthy.

Moreover, water promotes the production of lymph which is responsible to circulate W.B.C. (white blood corpuscles) and nutrients from the thymus gland (a lymphoid gland at the base of your vertebral column) and your bone marrow to all parts of your body. All these functions are inter-related and help profoundly in strengthening your immune system.

  • Prevents sprains and muscle spasm

Regularly indulging in too much coffee, alcoholic beverage, sodas and black tea makes your body chronically dehydrated. When your body has very less water, toxins accumulate and circulate in the blood, causing painful spasms and inflammation. Drinking enough water will lubricate your bone joints and keep your muscles elastic, thus keeping sprains and spasms at bay.

  • Water uplifts your mood

Health Benefits of Drinking more than 8 glasses of water everydayTension, stress, confusion and depression – everything has been found to score down when you have high water content in your body. Although the exact reason is yet to be known, but water has been found to ease anxiety and nervousness and help you to focus more on your work. Try and keep a check on the color of your urine. A light color of urine indicates a good level of dehydration.

  • Fights sickness

Health Benefits of Drinking more than 8 glasses of water everydayDrinking enough water profoundly helps you to fight common cold, cough and running nose. Try drinking a glass of warm water mixed with lemon juice and a little honey every morning. This will not only aid your weight loss but also increase the level of calcium in your body and keep cough and cold at bay.

Well, even these ten points cannot sum up the immense benefits that water provides you. But in today’s life of unending competition, rushing and deadlines, our concern for health has taken a back-seat. Most of the times we are so busy with our work, that the only time it occurs to us that we should drink more and more water is when we notice the darkened color of our urine, or we have tidbits of bloody mucous coming out of our nose or when one fine day, we realize that our skin has lost the freshness and glow that it used to have. Hence, I am going to list some very easy ways that can help you in the long run :

  • Always keep your bottle of water nearby. Always. So, that you can keep sipping some from time to time.
  • Keep a track of how much water you are currently drinking and how much you should drink. Chalk it out in your mind that in every two hours you are going to have a glass of water.
  • Do you have a desk in your office or a white-board where you can attach to-do lists? Well then, use it to remind yourself to do this task.
  • Nowadays, we have mobile apps for everything right? In fact, there is a very helpful app called Water Your Body which takes into account your weight, B.M.I, habits and accordingly decides how much water you need to drink. It will remind you to drink water in every hour in case you forget.

I have tried sharing all the knowledge that I have in this topic with you all. I request you to share any another benefit that you know about and your take on this article.
