Another day of the lockdown, another roster of TV shows to choose from. Netflix has a bunch of originals and some from the world of Bollywood and Hollywood up its sleeve, and this lockdown seems to be the perfect time to unleash it. While it has had some failures, like Hasmukh and Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction, there have been some who have gone under the radar but shouldn’t have. Half of It is one such movie. A movie revolving around teenagers coming of age, discovering sexualities, discovering their passions and ambitions, Half of It is understated and therein finds its beauty.

When looked up on Netflix, Half of It comes under LGBTQ Movies, US Teen Comedies and is heartfelt and quirky. Which it is. Other than being just that, Half of it is an underrated masterpiece. The actors are silently marvellous. The movie doesn’t overdo the point and doesn’t deviate from its central premise. After a lot of cringy and frankly overdone teen romedies, it was a welcome departure to watch Half of It.

What Is The Movie About?

Before I begin, a huge spoiler alert. The movie is full of twists and turns and is ultimately a complete joyride. So if you want to enjoy the film of your own volition, without any reveals on my part, you should stop reading now.

Set in the fictional town of Squahamish, Half of It is a story of three people, and then the town itself. Our protagonist, Ellie Chu, is a Chinese American, who was born and brought up in the town on Squahamish. She doesn’t have a great many friends and is a straight-A student. She also writes essays for most of the students in her grade, getting paid for the work. Ellie also has been crushing on famous but sweet Aster Flores, who is probably everyone’s first love in the town.

Aster is currently dating one of the wealthiest kids in the town, Trig. But as you would have it, she is only doing it on the orders of her father. Enter Paul Munsky. Adorable, goofy and a bit dumb, Paul Munsky believes himself to be in love with Aster Flores, and finally sets out to woo her. He decides that the best way to catch her attention would be to write a sweet love letter. But since he is not that good with words, who else to ask but the resident literature queen herself?

At first, Ellie refuses to write the letter for him, not wanting to sabotage her feelings for Aster, but eventually agrees as she needs the money for her electricity to keep running. And then begins a series of unfortunate events, written in a very minimalistic style.

What Is So Special About Half Of It?

Well, the premise in itself is not unique. It’s a typical boy likes girl scenario, boy recruits nerd to write love letters for him and the girl ends up falling for the subject of the love letters. What is unique about the movie is the sheer simplicity it has been crafted in. The film aims to capture the essence of minimalism in the millennial mind and portray it. It has, of course, its fair share of twists and turns, but they don’t seem to come to you right away. They are all gradual developments, and the watcher’s mind often goes, “Huh. I felt like I knew that…” when confronted with the plot twist.

The Half of It goes to prove an age old statement about Hollywood – sex sells. The movie borders on the PG side of PG-13, and hence still remains relatively underrated in the Netflix community. It being an LGBTQ movie on top of that just adds to its nicheness.

Despite carving itself up a specific audience, Half of It is a movie that should honestly be watched by everyone. We are in a generation where most of the cinematography aims at being loud and jarring. Capturing an audience is not as easy as wearing hot pink clothes and acting typical anymore. Movies demand to have meaning and an absolute reality to them, which Half of It quite wonderfully captures.

The Good Parts – And The Not So Good Parts.

While I could go on waxing poetic about how wonderfully simplistic Half of It, I won’t. That is because while there was a lot about the movie that had the ability to simply enthrall, there was also a lot that just didn’t feel realistic. Yes, there are teen coming of age shows that portray 29 something year olds as 18 years olds, and it’s far from as realistic Half of It is. However, I’d just like to say that even Half of It went wrong with how they portrayed a Gen-Z teenager.

These days, you won’t see our teenagers discussing Proust and brush strokes. They would rather be discussing the latest Netflix show that’s streaming or about the most recent Tiktok challenge that has gone viral. In this case, The Half of It fails to make that connection and you really don’t find yourself identifying with that aspect of the movie. But what broke the film for me is the same thing that made it for me.

The Best Scene

In this scene, Ellie challenges Aster, through the letters, to draw graffiti on the wall, countering a stroke that she had made already. It turns into a game of theirs – trying to convey their thoughts and ideas, their strengths and insecurities in graffiti.

There is something serene, beautiful about the love they share. A standard, a very misconstrued stigma exists around homosexual, lesbian relationships – that they are promiscuous, wanton, moralless. But the truth is, they aren’t. They are just the same as a heterosexual relationship. I would even go so far as to exclaim that they are purer. These relationships are a meeting of the minds and then a meeting of souls.

Stream Half Of It Now!

Half of It shows all of this to you. You don’t see the indecision, the quarrel of not knowing your identity. You see a simple love story, just somebody else’s. This simple breakdown, normalization of lesbian relationships is exactly what makes Half of It the masterpiece that it is.

And last, and not the least, is the star of the show. The friendship that Paul and Ellie share. They are both from opposite sides of the spectrum. They have ideologies and passions that are as dissimilar as water and stone. And regardless of what brought them together, their friendship is probably the most authentic and most accurate teenage friendships I have seen. They are both morons, yes, but they are each other’s morons, and no matter what happens, the movie assures you that they’ll always have each other’s back.

Half of It will not have a sequel. We will not know if Ellie got back to Aster after two years. But what we’ll always know is that love will always find a way to thrive and that maybe it’s okay to take a chance on that jock who’s asking you for his help. He might make for a good friend.

We see a lot of the world from our very subjective eyes. We are witness to things that interest us, and other happenings evade us. Such is the fall and subsequent rise of athlete Alison Stokke. The world may not remember her now, but Allison Stokke was one of the best pole-vaulters in the 2010s. This was all before the media took a look at her. The world of entertainment, media, and paparazzi is a dark rabbit hole, and it threatened to change Alison’s view of the world. However, we aren’t here to talk about her fall from the sky. We are instead here to read of her struggles and learn of the strength and courage needed to make your way to the top.

Allison Stokke’s Early Life.

Allison was already born to a scenario where she was continually surrounded by sports. So, sports came naturally to her. And when she took to it, you could call her a natural at it. Her brother was a national-level gymnast. It was this exposure that put her into the track and field athletic industry. While her brother was a gymnast, Alison saw that pole vaulting was more her speed. It is not clear at what age, but Stokke began her foray into pole-vaulting at a pretty young age. At that point, she was but one in a bunch of other pole-vaulters. It also didn’t help matters that female sports, including pole-vaulting, were barely of much importance. Regardless, Stokke took to the sport with gusto, and soon started making a name for herself.

Early Life Achievements.

It didn’t take long for Allison to start making a name for her in the world of pole-vaulting. Stokke went on to become the youngest and most successful pole-vaulters in the United States of America. At this time, she was barely a high-school senior and was modeling part-time. At the young age of 15, she managed to win the US title and pole-vaulted an impressive height of 12.5 feet. If you can’t get a context, which is two six feet guys standing on each other vertically.

It didn’t take her long to start surpassing her own standards. Allison took barely two years to start breaking her own records, and in 2004 she jumped to 12.8 feet! She soon broke her own records of 13 and 13.5 feet respectively. As a high school senior, she had to juggle both her education and training life and she did so gracefully. The end of that year, she broke her own record and jumped a whopping 13.6 feet, which, to provide context, is two times the height of the infamous Michael Jordan.

The Photo That Brought It All Down.

Allison Stokke had it all. She was realizing her dreams and ambitions and was getting better with each event. She had truly become a household name in the world of track and field athletics. However, it all flipped when an unofficial journalist took her photo at that time. While she was popular for her achievements, Allison’s looks hadn’t yet really come into factoring her fame. As there was minimal publicity around her in the first place, Stokke was able to focus entirely on her performance as a pole vaulter and less about the critiquing around it.

However, this one photo changed it all. Stokke was a conventional beauty. Her aquiline features and sleek build was ideal for glamour and fashion magazines. This propelled her to fame immediately, almost overnight. However, these amounts of fame weren’t good for Allison, who was never on magazine covers yet.

As is with the patriarchal and toxically masculine mindset of most men in the world, Allison soon saw comments about how attractive she was. Seedy magazines reposted her photo in their issues, with demeaning captions. Nowhere was her skill and prowess mentioned. Overnight she had turned from a talented athlete on her way to glory, to mere eye candy for gossip magazines.

Managing a Situation Spiralling Out of Control.

When it all began, nobody could have calculated how popular Allison would actually get. She had shot to fame in her city, and from there on, the internet had gone viral with speculations about her. Soon large news outlets, Washington and New York Times also picked her up, and featured her on their papers. While this did bring a lot of attention to Stokke, helping advertise her sport, it also brought on the dark underbelly of popularity. Stalkers and Anti-Fans.

Stokke managed to get hold of a manager to take care of the explosive number of emails and calls she was receiving. However, the situation wasn’t easy to handle. She had to resort to extreme tactics. The Allison Stokke that usually wished to stray away from the limelight signed on with a talk show, to appear on their video broadcast.

This video was to explain to her fans her career of pole vaulting, and how kids like her who want to pursue it could get help. The video was informative and very straightforward. It is pretty obvious that Stokke has no intention to address the shallow outlook of the internet. However, as soon as the video went up, instead of people failed to recognize her talent and talk. They instead started commenting on her physique.

Looking For the Silver Lining.

Allison Stokke’s story didn’t go in vain. Her father was a practicing lawyer and made sure nobody had harmful intentions towards her. While there were no immediate threats to her well-being or life, her psychological stability had taken a hit. At such a young age, Stokke had to face the ruthless, demeaning side of the industry and it was scary. She said that she couldn’t participate as there was always a group of admirers that tried to get close to her.

However, she rose out of the ashes like a phoenix and managed to break her previous barriers to achieve some of the tallest pole vaulting records in history. Though she didn’t make it to the Olympics, she manages to remain an inspiration to many of us. She also stands as a warning of what a cruel place the world becomes on your success and how it can leech you of your sanity if you are not careful. And when you talk of adventure, a good trek is really a good option. Parang la trek is one of the best options that meet all the requirements like budget, adventure, scenic beauty and fun.

Parang la is one of the most famous and ancient trek routes of spiti. It connects people of Spiti to those of Ladakh. This place is really a treat to eyes as it has a fantastic view of the mountains and Pare Chu River. This trail basically follows the ancient and traditional route between the people of Spiti, Changthan and Tibet which was used for trade purpose.

Meadows of Khibber, the point from where this trek starts is indeed a true landscape and is used as breeding ground for Chumur (Spiti horses). The trail follows a broad valley across the entire pass. Also, you will find a glacier of about 3 kilometers to the northeast of the pass. A photographer will find this place to be a true treat and would not be able to stop himself/herself to capture this very gift of nature. So, Just follow this 12 day itinerary and enjoy this very bliss.

Day 1: Manali- Kaza

Any road trip can be a moment of life for people. And this trip to spiti valley via kaza is no less than a memory. The nasty water crossings and roadways shall surely make your heart bounce like none other. It starts from Gramphu and ends at Kunzum Pass and covers around 200 km. This way is termed to be one of the deadliest roads hence termed to be really adventurous. If you are someone travelling from Delhi, you need to invest two days in order to reach Kaza. On the first day, travel to Manali from Delhi and the next day reach Kaza, your destination.

Day 2: Sightseeing in Kaza

This place is good to explore place. You must cover some of the famous places and make it a regret-free trip. Enjoy the serene beauty and brilliant views. Get a good collection of photographs with you. Starting with a monastery, forget about you being spiritual or not, once you visit Kaza, you must visit the Key Monastery which is almost 7km from Kaza. It was established in the 11^th century.

Coming next is Chandratal Lake, which is at an altitude of 4300 km and a not to miss the place in your travel itinerary. This lake won’t ever dismay you as it sparkles with clear blue water, a true charm to your eyes. One such place is Komic village, at an altitude of 4275 km; a place where fossils are found. But beware and do not buy them as its illegal. Although Kaza is a small place, do not miss to buy famous kinds of stuff of wool-like shawls and carpet and clothes

Day 3: Dhumla-Thaltak

Once you are done with exploring Kaza, climb up to parilungbi river for 7 hours. Find a spectacular view of Kang Nilda towards southeast. Apart from this, towards your northwest, you’ll find a variety of peaks standing above Kunzum Pass. Thaltak is an apt place for camping and provides you with good camping ground.

Day 4: Reaching Bongrogen

Day 4 is sure to be your toughest day of the trek. To reach bongrogen, you have to descend way down to Parilungbi river. Once you cross the footbridge, you need to walk around 2 kms till you reach Jagatha. This place is a base camp for Parang la. Since you have already experienced a way too tiring trip, have a break and comfort yourselves in the nature’s lap at this beautiful base camp.

Day 5: Bongrogen to Dak Karzong via Parang la

Now catch what you have travelled for since 3 or 4 days. After having a good rest, you are re-ready to move ahead and continue your trek. So, grab a good breakfast and get ready for further trekking. Now your zig-zag trail finally lets you enter Parang la. When you see the spiritual flags and hear the enchanting prayers, you are here at Parang la. On the right, you can find layers of ice and walk along the Parang chu glacier, (If you know chu means river). Click as many pictures as you can because often these kinds of trips are once in a lifetime. Finally, you reach the campsite of Dak Karzong after walking a long distance alongside the trail.

Day 6: Step towards Datang Yongma

As you move further along the river, you get to see beautiful meadow that is going to be really pleasant to your eyes. It is a lush green meadow amidst the dry landscape, a true beauty. Get in hold of lot many memories in your camera enjoying this treat to your eyes.

Day 7: 6 hours trek to Norbu Sumdo

Crossing several glacial paths and moving alongside the river is one thing which is not going to leave your part till your entire journey. Also in these 6 hours of trekking, you will be experiencing to walk on dry river beds. Sumdo means a junction of 3 trails- one from Chumur, one from Spiti and the last one from Ladakh. One can enjoy the experience of an overnight stay in the tent. Camp at the broad oasis of Norbu Sumdo at low temperatures and get a thrilling experience. It’s surely a must visit place, no doubt about it.

Day 8: Norbu sumdo to Kiangdom

Get ready for a 6 hours trek from Norbu Sumdo to Kiangdom. This is going to the largest and biggest river crossings in your entire trek. This is going to be the last time you shall be crossing the river. At this place, you can easily find groups of horses and mules crossing the river and easily capture the bond between the two. Also, you must watch out that you stay cautious whils your trek and don’t get harm by these animals.

This trail now ascends towards the left side once you leave the river and continue towards Chanthang. Once you are inside the city, you can easily find many attractions, the most famous one is Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary, which is surrounded by two mountain lakes, Pangong Tso Lake and Tso Moriri. This place is a home to Changpa tribe, a nomadic and pastoral community. Commonly found animals in this place are sheep, Tibetian wild ass, snow leopard etc.

Day 9: Kiangdom to Korzok

Korzok is a place that will head you towards Leh. This trek is about a 7 hours trek of 24 kms. Herein, you walk along the shores of Tso Moriri throughout the day. And can easily see the lake change its shade throughout the day. Finally you reach Korzok, which is a small village. You can visit Korzok Monastery founded by Kunga Lodro Ningpo. Korzok literally mean ‘acquired by unfair means’. The famous festival of this place is Kurzok Gustor festival celebrated during the months of July or September. After exploring the place to your fullest, you can have a comfortable night stay with your friends or family as the next day is going to be tiring for you.

Day 10: Finally to Leh

Wake up fresh and start your travel towards Leh, an ultimate level of beauty, so scenic, so pure; you would just completely love it. It is an 8 hour drive of about 213 kms. This is a hub of must visit places. The magnetic hill, the name itself can capture the travelers. This place has an anti- gravitational effect, the only magnetic hill in India. The next is Leh palace, a 19 storey high building made in the 17^th century. Also, you can have a glance at Zaskar Valley, mostly travelled for river rafting and trekking trails. Enjoy this place at your fullest and get a huge collection of memories saved in your cameras. This ends your parang la trek.
