The making of our National flag – History of the tricolor evolution

0

“Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it; it flies with the last breath of each soldier who dies protecting it”.

The Indian flag is just not a piece of cloth, it is an emotion for all 1.3 billion people.

Not every one of us knows that our flag got modified for six times. It has evolved so much in comparison to the present form.

Communal disputes, political ideologies, and religious sentiments altogether kept clashing every time, which led to an unstable flag validation.

It was Pingali Venakayya, who designed our present form of the national flag.

On 2nd October, remembering Gandhiji for his strive to pull his country from the clutches of British cruelty. His contribution to evolving the present ‘Tricolor Tiranga’ is one of his remarkable work. Let’s know the history of our national flag before it got modified into its present form.

1. First flag – 1906

The first national flag of India was brought out in the year 1906 and was also hoisted the same year.

The hoisting of our national flag took place in the Parsee Bagan Square (Green Park) in Calcutta (Kolkata).

It has been reportedly contrived by sister Nivedita who was an Irish disciple of Swami Vivekananda.

The flag was fabricated with green, yellow, and red-colored stripes with Vande Matram written in the middle with Devnagri.

The topmost stripe was green with eight unfurled lotuses, and the bottom red stripe had a shining sun and a crescent moon.

2. Second flag – 1907

With a period of just one year, our national flag got transformed again.

The very next year in 1907, again a new design was turned up.

The colors got inverted from its position and the red color was replaced with saffron color.

This time the top stripe comprehend eight simple flowers and the bottom green stripe had the shining sun on the left while a crescent moon and a star on the right side of the flag.

The special thing to note about this flag is that it became the first flag to get hoisted in a foreign land.

Madame Kama and her exiled revolutionary group hoisted the national flag in Germany in 1907.

3. Third flag – 1917

The third transformation of the flag took place in the year 1917 and had a very unique approach for the design.

It is comprised of five red and four green alternate horizontal stripes.

Also, seven stars in the saptrishi configuration were superimposed over the stripes.

There was a union jack placed over the left upper corner of the flag with a crescent moon and star on the upper right corner.

The hoisting of the flag was done by Annie Besant and Lokmanya Tilak and took place during the home rule movement.

This was a phase in India when political struggle took a turn.

4. Fourth flag – 1921

Again India saw a delineation of their national flag.

During the All India National Congress Committee, at Bezwada(now Vijaywada), an Andhra Youth came along with their own design. The flag was designed as red and green stripes representing the Hindu and Muslim communities in the flag respectively.

They went up to Gandhiji with their idea. Gandhiji suggested adding a white stripe to the flag depicting other communities and a spinning wheel symbolizing the progress of the nation.

This flag was unofficially adopted in the year 1921.

5. Fifth flag – 1931

The 1921 flag provoked various communal interpretations and every community started seeking their representation on the flag.

The Sikh community later came up with demanding the inclusion of yellow color to the flag or simply removing the concept of religious symbolism.

So, it had to be brought down and a new flag was planned out.

Ten years following, a commitment was passed stating the adoption of a tricolor Indian national flag, which is similar to our present flag approach.

So, the new national flag prepared had three stripes of saffron, white and green colors arranged from top to bottom, with a spinning wheel placed centrally.

6. Sixth flag – 1947

The flag committee was organized on 23rd June 1947.

Three weeks following this date, they reached a decision of excluding all the communal implications. Thus settled with suitable modification of the national flag, acceptable by all the parties and communities.

The “charkha” was replaced with “Dharma chakra”, with 24 spokes in it depicting Dharma and integrity.

The unfurling of our national flag thus took place on 15th August 1947 at the council house. It was for the first time as an independent country, unshackled from the clutches of the British rule.

Summing the things up…

Tiranga or tricolor comprising of horizontal triband of saffron, white and green colors, with Dharmachakra in blue placed at the center, was designed by Pingali Venakayya. It was based on the Swaraj flag, a flag of the Indian National Congress (INC).

The flag is always to be made of Khadi which is handspun silk or cotton. The raw materials that could be used for the manufacture of Khadi were confined to silk, wool, and cotton.

The setting up of units for flag manufacture in India is under the control of the Khadi Development and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). There is only one licensed unit for manufacturing, which is based in Hubli. After manufacture, it is sent to the Bureau of Indian Standards(BIS), for stringent quality checks.

Any defect in the manufactured flag leads to serious shortcomings and can lead to jail. Our national flag is a pride for all the citizens of India and is a symbol of sovereignty, integrity, and similarity.

Famous Feuds in the History of Science

Science and Technology have been constantly growing in the modern era. The World has made a massive-advancements in various fields of Science. We can agree, the technology in the present day is much easily accessible than earlier days. Nevertheless, every invention consists of a Legend who put in blood and sweat to make the technology work in the right way. It takes the labor of a lifetime to bring out an innovation inside a mind. Every scientist has been trying to create a revolution. However, the name linked to the revolution around the world matters the most. Common ideas, Improvising, Plagiarism have been a common element in the scientific community and a major reason for feuds.

We must all be familiar with newer discoveries, growing science and the masters behind the technology. However, what remains infamous are the greatest feuds among these renowned scientists. What if I tell you that the inventor of an electric light “Thomas Alva Edison” was kind of a bully? or One of the masterminds of Science “Sir Newton” was using his genius to defame a scientist? It is a bit hard to believe, Right?

Here are some of the untold stories of feuds among the household names of Science. These feuds are the reason for a reduced pace of advancement in technology. They’ve changed the world and the world-view.

Nikola Tesla vs Thomas Alva Edison

Nikola Tesla vs Edison

Edison is one of those names in the scientific community that instantly comes to your mind, Right? The inventor of electric light and one of the well-known scientists. However, little did you know that Edison was one of those bullies that make your life miserable. Well, you might admire and look up-to Edison but Nikola Tesla sure have other opinions.

Tesla was an employee of Edison in the early years. While, Edison was developing his research on direct current (DC), Tesla had made advancements in the alternating current (AC). This resulted in the most popular feud of science history.

Alternating current is a better source of energy as it works for higher distance and power. If AC would’ve been popularised back in the day, the advancement of technology would’ve been enormous. However, instead of joining hands with Tesla, Edison’s plans were to defame the scientist. Edison’s DC had no chance if AC came out, so Edison spent a huge amount of money to campaign against Tesla. As a result, Tesla never won a noble prize for his invention and had difficulty finding investors.

Charles Darwin vs Richard Owen

Charles Darwin vs Richard Owen

Charles Darwin is the Father of Evolution across the world. However, it is believed that the popular biologist wasn’t the only one that implemented the idea of evolution. A well-known microbiologist and physician, Robert Koch was also working on the same idea alongside. Nonetheless, Darwin published the research paper as soon as possible when he came to know about the competition. This made Koch furious.

The banter between the two was far from professional. These scientists ran around insulting each other on the radio, trash-talking in their interviews and drawing absurd art of each other in the newspaper. Koch was so hateful that he even stood against the theory of evolution, his own theory.

Isaac Newton vs Gottfried Leibniz

Isaac Newton vs Gottfried Leibniz

Did you ever come across the contributions of Gottfried Leibniz in the world of calculus? No? Well, that is what Sir Isaac Newton was planning for. Isaac Newton is among the top genius minds in the world. There is a huge role of Newton in implementing modern science. However, science is not the only subject Newton used his mastermind tricks.

Isaac Newton was working on calculus for a long period of time. Nonetheless, Gottfried Leibniz was also working on the theory alongside. When Newton came to know about the competition, he with his team members put all the efforts to defame Leibniz. His crew started campaigning against Leibniz. Eventually, Newton was successful in removing Leibniz’s name from the theory of Calculus. His contributions towards the theory just became a minor topic of calculus while Isaac Newton became responsible for the Calculus.

Pope Urban VIII vs Galileo

Pope Urban VIII vs Galileo

We are aware of the fact that all the planets in our solar system revolves around the sun. Sun is in the center and this is heliocentricity and we often laugh at anyone who believe otherwise. However, this is the established fact, NOW. Back in the day, believing that the sun was the center of the solar system was a sin. Pope Urban VIII was pretty serious about his religious beliefs among Roman Catholics.

The line of church was following Aristotle’s theories of heavenly bodies revolving around Earth. Nonetheless, Galileo strongly followed the heliocentric views and dedicated his life to prove the facts of Universe. As a result, this was not appreciated in the community rather it led Galileo to be house arrested for the rest of his life until his death in 1642.

Louis Pasteur vs Robert Koch

Louis Pasteur vs Robert Koch

Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch are both highly popular scientists with massive respect from their fields. However, even a single spark could set off the two scientists working together. The French-German dispute was a major political agenda in 1870. A war was fought that separated the two nations including these two representatives of each nation.

However, microbiology comes into play when France and Germany were competing for creation of medicine to overcome the diseases among explorers. While Koch was mentioned that bacteria could not be moulded to fight disease, Pasteur succeeded in transforming bacteria to create vaccines.

Though studying for opposite teams, Koch and Pasteur were sharing good relations as colleagues to achieve similar goal. However, neither one of them spoke the other’s language. So, when once a translator put out mistaken interpretation of Pasteur’s words as calling Koch and his nation arrogant, the spark soon became fire. Now arch-nemeses, the two were competing against cholera epidemic. Koch was victorious. When Pasteur discovered a vaccine for rabies, Koch discouraged its use.

Antoine Lavoisier vs Jean-Paul Marat

Antoine Lavoisier vs Jean-Paul Marat

Some feuds in Science are respectful while others are to earn fame over other scientists. However, this massive dispute among the inventors became a reason for an execution. Ruining the reputation up-to an extent that cost a life, this was the case of Antoine Lavoisier.

Lavoisier was silver-spoon, a popular scientist who was trying to reform France’s historically famous tax laws. Lavoisier was also one of the premier members of the Academy of Sciences, and he did use his resources to make discoveries that are still quite popular, such as mass conservation and, well, oxygen. Whereas, Marat was born a commoner. He waited to become a member of the Academy of Sciences, and suggested a theory he called “Animal Magnetism“. Animal magnetism was a possible theory for hypnotism & healings.

With this theoretical “evidence” in hand, Marat went before Lavoisier and the Academy. However, he was a recipient of criticism rather than applause. Lavoisier called the explanation vague and mentioned there was no basic foundation of the theory.

Marat was passing out papers that denounces Lavoisier and his beliefs. Marat got on board with a movement to denounce the Academy of Science. the French Revolution began and Marat was killed. After his death, his causes were taken way more seriously than they should have been. Lavoisier was eventually arrested and executed.

Albert Einstein vs Philipp Lenard

Albert Einstein vs Philipp Lenard

Einstein is unquestionably a legend. However, Philipp Lenard was no less of a genius in his research. Lenard’s work was in development of X-Rays and atomic theory. He was a recipient of a Nobel Prize in Physics.

Einstein shared a friendly bond with Lenard at first, he even called Lenard a “genius”. Nonetheless, nationalism soon became a disturbance resulting in feud among the two masterminds. Lenard kept criticizing Einstein’s theoretical approach, commenting about Einstein’s Jewish heritage. In 1920, things became serious at a major research conference.

At the conference, Lenard was constantly attacking Einstein’s theories, was comparing the famous scientist to a goat. Little did he know, he gave a correct statement, Einstein indeed was a G.O.A.T. However, Einstein did not reply to the allegations and made a decision for a long-term lesson. Well, this became a reason behind invention of nuclear weapons and a crucial help to win the World War.

Ignaz Semmelweis vs. Charles Meigs

Ignaz Semmelweis vs. Charles Meigs

We can all agree how important washing hands have become in the recent times, Right? However, in 1850, Charles Meigs did not agree with this fact of hygiene. Well, you must be wondering who is Charles Meigs? And what is his problem with washing hands? Let me brief it up.

Ignaz Semmelweis came up with a basic suggestion to reduce the infant mortality rate. The lack of hygiene was causing health problems among infants or even death. Semmelweis’s suggestion to the medical community was the three magical words “Wash your hands”. He gave an idea about how washing hands before delivering a child can reduce infant mortality and also ensure hygiene. Little did he know, that this idea can change his life and result in the greatest feud of his life.

However, Charles Meigs, a popular doctor was opposing the idea of washing hands before operation. He said that the doctors are gentlemen and gentlemen don’t need to wash hands. Meigs was successful in defaming the Vietnamese doctor and ripping him off the job. Nonetheless, Semmelweis suggestion was proven right after two decades with Louis Pasteur’s discovery of germs and microorganisms.

Carlisle, the character played by Facinelli, is the patriarch of the vampire family, called the Cullens. A compassionate soul, Carlisle is the most level-headed and kind-hearted vampire of the bunch. He and his wife Esme had taken the responsibility to bring in the other vampires and give them a home. He comes to be a great help to Bella in the coming movies.

An Almost Missed Opportunity

When asked about his most famous role, as Carlisle, Facinelli had a fun incident to share. In an interview with Warburton magazine, he said, “I actually rejected Twilight at first. My manager did a bad job of explaining the plot and I thought there would be a lot of gore, blood. It sounded like a bad horror film. Then I read the books by Stephanie. And I was desperate to have a part in it.”

When asked about his plans after the success of such a huge franchise as it had grown, he didn’t have to say much. He was already a showrunner in the daily dark comedy series Nurse Jackie. He plays the enigmatic Dr.Fitch Cooper.

Plans For Now

When asked for his plans after both the show he had some impactful advice to share. “When you’re working for two jobs at once, you tend to miss out on the more important things in life. I loved working two jobs, the travelling and everything. But on the other hand, my children were growing up before me and I was missing out on their childhood. So I decided to take closer to home roles and live in the moment.” Facinelli now lives with his family and just recently proposed to his long-time girlfriend Lily Anne Harrison on a trip to New Mexico. We wish the couple a happy married life!!

2020 has been hard lately and is continuing its vogue to make our life more miserable. It is an unexpected year which has put our daily lifestyle to a halt. Just like a coin has two faces, similarly, every situation has something good and something bad hidden in it. It may not be visible to us in the first place but will soon make us realize why something happened to us. Similarly, this pandemic is a blessing in disguise (agree or not). It has taught us so many lifelong lessons that are going to stay with us for the rest of our lives. We surely are never going to forget this year.

Never take life for granted

Everyone find it so easy to accuse life and its methods every time that we end up feeling disgusting for having it and pity for ourselves. But 2020 taught us that being alive is the most precious gift given to us by God. You are blessed if you are still alive and reading this in 2020. Miracles can happen any time and life can present you to them in an unpredictable way.

You have all the power within you

We had enormous time to spend with ourselves during lockdown which made us contemplate deeper and introspect and become a higher version of ourselves. It made us believe that we have all the power within ourselves which is required to triumph everything. Meditation does help you out in finding yourself and your purpose.

Lessons learned in 2020

Family is your permanent

This pandemic surely made us realize one thing that family is our permanent supporter. We lost so many bonds during this time which we thought would be forever. But in the meantime, when no one cared for you, your family had been there in the most unexpected manner whether it is taking care of your health whiling deteriorating their own or giving you the best facilities they can afford or just be around you if you feel lonely inside. We realized that spending time with the family is the real investment in our life. Love your family and the universe will fall in love with you.

Friends are gonna come and go but family is forever”.

Never forget your passion

Another profound benefit of solidarity is that you find out what you want and what has your heart. If you have already found what keeps you exiting, then never forget it. We might lose our jobs, but we must never lose our passion. So, hold onto it no matter what it costs you.

And for those who are still exploring themselves, don’t give up. You are living the best days of your life. Just hang it there. The world needs you.

You must have patience

Patience is the key to success. For you to achieve something, endeavor to have the patience for everything. It is a calm and peaceful mind that will help you remain focused on your goals and yourself. Even if things seem a little tough or going the other way, have patience and this pandemic taught all of us to have enormous patience.

Lessons learned in 2020

Grow every day

One prudent advice that this year came up with is that the real goal must be to become better every day. The secret lies in comparing yourself with your yesterday version and not with someone else, so commit to being better each day. Invest in yourself. Take control of your actions and try breaking the negative habit cycle.

Nature is the best healer

Whenever we feel alone and found no one to lend us an ear, we went to nature to listen to our rants and soothe us. But this time, we not only realize that nature is the best healer but also that it is the most powerful amongst us. We can not mess with nature and its creatures. We can not just rule over it as per our choices. We must adore nature.

Lessons learned in 2020

Positivity is the key

Demotivation, low strength, overthinking, negativity, etc. has been buzzing around us since the lockdown was announced and these feelings have done no good to us. What made us change into our higher selves is positivity. Staying positive has a huge impact on our mental health as well as physical health. Look at the situation with a positive perspective and things will change.

Love yourself

Loving someone else and sometimes breaking your heart is easy. The toughest and the easiest work lies behind loving yourself. Whether you are a teenager, adult, or old; or whether you are single or with someone, you must never forget to take care of yourself and love yourself unconditionally.

Loving yourself can have many definitions. Choose your definition to define you.

You can survive without junk food

Living in this era where food poses before being eaten by people is a transparent picture of where the world is heading into. We have been so addicted to outside binge eating junk foods that healthy foods lost their meaning. But when we did not have access to them for the last 6 months, it made us realize that we can surely survive without eating junk and that eating healthy food is a necessity which is demanded by this virus as well.

Lessons learned in 2020

Health is the real wealth

People used to take our health for granted. We thought not sleeping well, not exercising, and not eating healthy will not harm us. As this virus took over our life, we learned that there is nothing more important than our health. We must take care of our health by adopting a positive and healthy lifestyle.

No matter whatever situation encounters you, family, or even the world. Never forget to believe in yourself and God.

Maybe, it hasn’t been our day, our week our month, or even our year but we will be there for each other.

Till then, stay safe and stay joyful!
