We see a lot of the world from our very subjective eyes. We are witness to things that interest us, and other happenings evade us. Such is the fall and subsequent rise of athlete Alison Stokke. The world may not remember her now, but Allison Stokke was one of the best pole-vaulters in the 2010s. This was all before the media took a look at her. The world of entertainment, media, and paparazzi is a dark rabbit hole, and it threatened to change Alison’s view of the world. However, we aren’t here to talk about her fall from the sky. We are instead here to read of her struggles and learn of the strength and courage needed to make your way to the top.

Allison Stokke’s Early Life.

Allison was already born to a scenario where she was continually surrounded by sports. So, sports came naturally to her. And when she took to it, you could call her a natural at it. Her brother was a national-level gymnast. It was this exposure that put her into the track and field athletic industry. While her brother was a gymnast, Alison saw that pole vaulting was more her speed. It is not clear at what age, but Stokke began her foray into pole-vaulting at a pretty young age. At that point, she was but one in a bunch of other pole-vaulters. It also didn’t help matters that female sports, including pole-vaulting, were barely of much importance. Regardless, Stokke took to the sport with gusto, and soon started making a name for herself.

It didn’t take long for Allison to start making a name for her in the world of pole-vaulting. Stokke went on to become the youngest and most successful pole-vaulters in the United States of America. At this time, she was barely a high-school senior and was modeling part-time. At the young age of 15, she managed to win the US title and pole-vaulted an impressive height of 12.5 feet. It didn’t take her long to start surpassing her own standards. Allison took barely two years to start breaking her own records, and in 2004 she jumped to 12.8 feet! The end of that year, she broke her own record and jumped a whopping 13.6 feet, which, to provide context, is two times the height of the infamous Michael Jordan.

Allison Stokke had it all. She was realizing her dreams and ambitions and was getting better with each event. She had truly become a household name in the world of track and field athletics. However, it all flipped when an unofficial journalist took her photo at that time. While she was popular for her achievements, Allison’s looks hadn’t yet really come into factoring her fame. As there was minimal publicity around her in the first place, Stokke was able to focus entirely on her performance as a pole vaulter and less about the critiquing around it.

This propelled her to fame immediately, almost overnight. However, these amounts of fame weren’t good for Allison, who was never on magazine covers yet.

Looking For the Silver Lining.

Allison Stokke’s story didn’t go in vain. Her father was a practicing lawyer and made sure nobody had harmful intentions towards her. While there were no immediate threats to her well-being or life, her psychological stability had taken a hit. At such a young age, Stokke had to face the ruthless, demeaning side of the industry and it was scary. She said that she couldn’t participate as there was always a group of admirers that tried to get close to her.

However, she rose out of the ashes like a phoenix and managed to break her previous barriers to achieve some of the tallest pole vaulting records in history. Though she didn’t make it to the Olympics, she manages to remain an inspiration to many of us. And when you talk of adventure, a good trek is really a good option. Parang la trek is one of the best options that meet all the requirements like budget, adventure, scenic beauty and fun.

Parang la is one of the most famous and ancient trek routes of spiti. It connects people of Spiti to those of Ladakh. This place is really a treat to eyes as it has a fantastic view of the mountains and Pare Chu River. This trail basically follows the ancient and traditional route between the people of Spiti, Changthan and Tibet which was used for trade purpose.

Meadows of Khibber, the point from where this trek starts is indeed a true landscape and is used as breeding ground for Chumur (Spiti horses). The trail follows a broad valley across the entire pass. Also, you will find a glacier of about 3 kilometers to the northeast of the pass. A photographer will find this place to be a true treat and would not be able to stop himself/herself to capture this very gift of nature. So, Just follow this 12 day itinerary and enjoy this very bliss.

Day 1: Manali- Kaza

Any road trip can be a moment of life for people. And this trip to spiti valley via kaza is no less than a memory. The nasty water crossings and roadways shall surely make your heart bounce like none other. It starts from Gramphu and ends at Kunzum Pass and covers around 200 km. This way is termed to be one of the deadliest roads hence termed to be really adventurous. If you are someone travelling from Delhi, you need to invest two days in order to reach Kaza. On the first day, travel to Manali from Delhi and the next day reach Kaza, your destination.

Day 2: Sightseeing in Kaza

Day 3: Dhumla-Thaltak

Once you are done with exploring Kaza, climb up to parilungbi river for 7 hours. Find a spectacular view of Kang Nilda towards southeast. Apart from this, towards your northwest, you’ll find a variety of peaks standing above Kunzum Pass. Thaltak is an apt place for camping and provides you with good camping ground.

Day 4: Reaching Bongrogen

Day 4 is sure to be your toughest day of the trek. To reach bongrogen, you have to descend way down to Parilungbi river. Once you cross the footbridge, you need to walk around 2 kms till you reach Jagatha. This place is a base camp for Parang la. Since you have already experienced a way too tiring trip, have a break and comfort yourselves in the nature’s lap at this beautiful base camp.

Day 5: Bongrogen to Dak Karzong via Parang la

Now catch what you have travelled for since 3 or 4 days. After having a good rest, you are re-ready to move ahead and continue your trek. So, grab a good breakfast and get ready for further trekking. Now your zig-zag trail finally lets you enter Parang la. When you see the spiritual flags and hear the enchanting prayers, you are here at Parang la. On the right, you can find layers of ice and walk along the Parang chu glacier, (If you know chu means river). Click as many pictures as you can because often these kinds of trips are once in a lifetime. Finally, you reach the campsite of Dak Karzong after walking a long distance alongside the trail.

Day 6: Step towards Datang Yongma

As you move further along the river, you get to see beautiful meadow that is going to be really pleasant to your eyes. It is a lush green meadow amidst the dry landscape, a true beauty. Get in hold of lot many memories in your camera enjoying this treat to your eyes.

Day 7: 6 hours trek to Norbu Sumdo

Crossing several glacial paths and moving alongside the river is one thing which is not going to leave your part till your entire journey. Also in these 6 hours of trekking, you will be experiencing to walk on dry river beds. Sumdo means a junction of 3 trails- one from Chumur, one from Spiti and the last one from Ladakh. One can enjoy the experience of an overnight stay in the tent. Camp at the broad oasis of Norbu Sumdo at low temperatures and get a thrilling experience. It’s surely a must visit place, no doubt about it.

Day 8: Norbu sumdo to Kiangdom

Get ready for a 6 hours trek from Norbu Sumdo to Kiangdom. This is going to the largest and biggest river crossings in your entire trek. This is going to be the last time you shall be crossing the river. At this place, you can easily find groups of horses and mules crossing the river and easily capture the bond between the two. Also, you must watch out that you stay cautious whils your trek and don’t get harm by these animals.

This trail now ascends towards the left side once you leave the river and continue towards Chanthang. Once you are inside the city, you can easily find many attractions, the most famous one is Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary, which is surrounded by two mountain lakes, Pangong Tso Lake and Tso Moriri. This place is a home to Changpa tribe, a nomadic and pastoral community. Commonly found animals in this place are sheep, Tibetian wild ass, snow leopard etc.

Day 9: Kiangdom to Korzok

Korzok is a place that will head you towards Leh. This trek is about a 7 hours trek of 24 kms. Herein, you walk along the shores of Tso Moriri throughout the day. And can easily see the lake change its shade throughout the day. Finally you reach Korzok, which is a small village. You can visit Korzok Monastery founded by Kunga Lodro Ningpo. Korzok literally mean ‘acquired by unfair means’. The famous festival of this place is Kurzok Gustor festival celebrated during the months of July or September. After exploring the place to your fullest, you can have a comfortable night stay with your friends or family as the next day is going to be tiring for you.

Day 10: Finally to Leh

Wake up fresh and start your travel towards Leh, an ultimate level of beauty, so scenic, so pure; you would just completely love it. It is an 8 hour drive of about 213 kms. This is a hub of must visit places. The magnetic hill, the name itself can capture the travelers. This place has an anti- gravitational effect, the only magnetic hill in India. The next is Leh palace, a 19 storey high building made in the 17^th century. Also, you can have a glance at Zaskar Valley, mostly travelled for river rafting and trekking trails. If you have heard of Steve McQueen before, it is probably from the award-winning movie, 12 Years a Slave, released in 2013. The film, storytelling to most of us, is a recollection of his early life. It is also a story of slavery in America. The son of West Indian parents, Steve, has known slavery all his life. While his stories and films stand the test of time, as brilliant pieces of art, he admits to faults residing in his perspective too.

As an artist, he believes his view to be extremely singular. However, he also believes that this perspective that helps him look beyond the lens. And today, we shall dissect the man behind the director’s chair, Steve McQueen.

Early Life – Navigating a Post Slavery World for Steve McQueen.

Unlike a lot of other directors in the showbiz, nothing in McQueen’s life came easy. He wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Instead, he was at that time, at the lowest rung of the ladder. Steve McQueen was from a West-Indian family, and both his parents have been victims of the slave trade. In an interview with The Guardian, Mcqueen remarked on the impact that slavery played on his life. “There was never a moment I haven’t reminded the world I lived in. We never knew a life without slavery then.”

On whether he felt angry at the centuries of oppression his people had to endure, he didn’t have much to say, “Angry? No. We were hurt, yes. There was confusion and hurt, but we were never angry. We were, of course, angry about the fact that slavery was accepted and welcomed in the country, but we were never angry at our circumstances. They were painful and hurtful, but I think we just learned to live with them.”

Entering A New Industry.

After all the oppression that they lived in, the abolishment of slavery brought sighs of relief. Mcqueen’s family and a lot of other families took to doing the work they knew best, but in better conditions now. However, they had never exposed themselves to the arts and the job prospects in the world. Therefore, when Steve Mcqueen expressed his desire to work as a director in the industry, his parents couldn’t understand it. Even after becoming an acclaimed director, his father struggled with explaining Mcqueen’s job to his friends.

He has never been a conventional filmmaker. Mcqueen makes movies that grip you and leave you uncomfortable. A lot of films create a reality to divert from the dystopia we live in right now. Mcqueen’s movies intend to do the opposite. The issues that he forces us to confront are real-world issues, matters that threaten to destroy vulnerable sections of our society. And while we do become uncomfortable from the suffering we watch or our inactivity, the message gets across.

Set Apart From The Start.

It was precisely this unconventional approach of Steve’s that made him so sought-after in the film-making industry. Mcqueen’s first movie was only ten minutes long. The film, Bear, was silent and was purely one scene of two naked men, staring and sparring with each other.

It is evident in Mcqueen’s work that none of it is to please anybody. The stories he creates are unconventional and shine harsh, unforgiving lights on issues that have been under the radar far too long. Despite having topics that aren’t necessarily comfortable to witness, he and his films keep getting more and more popular by the day. If the movies aren’t a sell with the audience, they are a sell with the critics. His film, Hunger, didn’t do very well at the Box Office. However, the critics loved it, and it went on to win a BAFTA.

His most famous movie to date, 12 Years A Slave, won a total of 33 Awards, with 3 Oscars and numerous Golden Globes. The story is from the memoir of Solomon Northup of the same name.

12 Years a Slave – What It Means For Steve McQueen and For Us.

His experience working with the memoir was a revelation he says. The story was exactly what he intends to make into a movie, but in the same way, it was completely different. When interviewed by The Guardian, he says, “It was the same as what I had in mind and was a complete surprise. And in the same way, it was a revelation with each turn of the page. You begin with an idea of what you’re going to read, but every story, every experience in actuality is very different. It is an eye-opener.”

McQueen’s work doesn’t shirk from the brutal parts of the story. In his unapologetic way of filmmaking, he manages to show us lynching, rapes, the real brutality of slave-owning. He believes that for long, we have ignored what slavery means and boded for us not long ago. There has been a kind of amnesia, an urge to block out the trauma that slavery has possessed. On both parts. Blacks of the torture and oppression and the whites of having to face the real face of their ancestors.

The Road Forward.

He admits to being typecast too quickly in his early life. Due to being dyslexic and having a lazy eye, McQueen did not do very well in school and was cast aside easily. However, despite knowing so much about him, Steve McQueen remains an extremely private person, to himself and us. And this reflects in his work. He doesn’t spend too much time trying to analyse the motivations and ticks of his characters. He believes that his work is merely a visualization of what has happened and happens everyday.

When asked about the topics he wants to make films about later on, he admitted that he didn’t really know. He believes that his part, destiny is to simply tell the truth of the story, to visualize it. Once it’s done, his job’s done too. And there are after all, a million things to visualize in this dystopian world now.

Paatal Lok – The Answers Are Not What You Think They Are.

It seems like Amazon Prime Video is not far behind Netflix with the rate at which their releases have been coming. With some excellent additions to the list, it is truly a delight to have these many tv shows to watch. One to add to your roster is Paatal Lok. Paatal Lok is an Indian TV show in production by Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma and Sudip Sharma in the year 2020.

With names like Neeraj Kabi and Gul Panag, this TV show couldn’t escape our sights at all. And once we began, there was no end in sight. The show is gripping, thrilling, and mesmerizing in its cruel way. Its actors are all marvelous, and the story is truly astounding. There is not one thing that we could use to critique the show. One thing is for sure. Pataal Lok was one of the best TV shows we have come across in a while. However, it doesn’t require a second season. There is untold beauty in not exploring a sequel. And we believe that the magic of Paatal Lok should remain intact.

Before I begin explaining and critiquing the show step by step, a firm spoiler warning. If you haven’t watched the show and want a spoiler-free experience, do not go further than this. The following review shall contain a full-length critique of the series, spanning episode by episode.

Now that you have warned, let us proceed.

The Premise of Paatal Lok.

The story begins with a small-time police officer explaining something to his partner and sub-ordinate. He seems to be telling him about the myth in Hindu mythology of how there are three states of existence. Those being, Swarglok – Heaven, Dharti – The Earth and Paatal Lok – which refers to hell. He then denotes each part of Delhi to these three parts of the realm of existence. Ironically enough, the next case that Hathiram Choudary gets involves both the Paatal Lok and Swarglok of the city.

The Story That Creates Paatallok.

Big-shot journalist, Sanjeev Mehra, is allegedly a target of an assassination by a group of four. The four include criminals and alleged criminals Tope Singh, Kabir, Mary Lyngdoh, and Vishal Tyagi, who are currently residing in two small hotel rooms in Delhi. They have been waiting out for the correct opportunity to complete their assignment. However, Tyagi, the lead of this operation, suddenly cancels the job, and they soon leave the motel. Something seems wrong from the get-go of things, as they soon realize that a police car is trailing them. In the bid to escape them, their getaway car slams to a halt, and the police manage to apprehend them. However, this is not before one of them hurls a yellow phone into the water down below. A journalist van there manages to capture all of this on tape.

The local police are soon on the case to charge the culprits with appropriate crimes. Hathiram Chaudary, the police officer we saw at the beginning, is the one with this case. Hathiram Chaudary soon realizes that one of the prisoners in his custody is Vishal Tyagi. Vishal Tyagi, or better known as the infamous ‘Hathoda’ Tyagi. Hathoda Tyagi stands accused of committing over 45 murders in the state of Uttar Pradesh. And this is where you know that Paatal Lok isn’t your run-of-the-mill TV show.

Riddled With Controversy.

Paatal Lok has been no stranger to controversy since it started airing on 15^th May. The story dives headfirst into the controversies revolving around the bureaucracy. It becomes quite apparent at points that Paatal Lok is not afraid to take shots at the government.

Paatal Lok addresses dangerous topics such as fake news, corruption, and sexual harassment. And in doing so, toes the line between being brilliant and being illegal. There have already been multiple charge sheets. Legal notices have also come up against the show in the wake of many controversial scenes within the episodes.

There is a scene where a pedophile is raping a small boy. However, it is also apparent that the person committing this disgusting act is of Sikh descent. Following the release of the show, AISSF has already sent a legal notice for deeply defaming accusations against the Sikh religion.

The show has also managed to offend both Hindu and Muslim religions. Alt-Right Hindus have come out in a fury against the producers. This fury is for showing the lynching of a Muslim for supposedly eating beef. Beef is cow meat and is sacred to Hindus. In a lot of parts of the country, especially in the Northern states, consuming beef is illegal. While the scene that’s part of the show mimics true stories, they claim that the show is propagating Anti-Hindu sentiments.

A Spool of Never-Ending Twists and Turns.

Paatal Lok is full of a large number of graphic scenes. Despite this, it manages to be one of the best Indian TV shows of 2019 and 2020. It has terrific twists and turns and keeps you on your toes each episode. I have yet to meet a show that manages to succinctly explain every question they have created by the end of it.

No episode felt like a filler, and even the end didn’t seem stretched out. As we reach the season finale, we get a sense of foreboding. We are also able to predict the outcome for all our characters. And it is a very satisfying ending. The show does feel very detached from all of the controversies that it covered before.

There is no hate or propaganda in the work they have created. It feels a lot like the narration of an actual event in our current society. Whether that is a good or a bad thing, it is up to you to decide.

We all know about the great epic Mahabharat. We have either seen this epic on Television or read this epic. Most of us know Mahabharat from our childhood. We refreshed our memories of Mahabharat during lockdown. If anybody would have not watched Mahabharat episodes earlier, then they got a chance to see it. We could view Mahabharat on DD Bharati during lockdown. Later we could view it on DD Retro. Mahabharat was about the life of Lord Krishna, who was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Bhagvad Gita is a part of Mahabharat. Apart from the tale of Mahabharat, there are many lessons that we learn from the Hindu epic. I assume that you know the story of Mahabharat, so I am going to mention the lessons that we learn from it.

One must remain committed to duty

Lord Krishna said that one must perform his or her duty. He explained Arjun about dharma by opening his mouth and showing the entire cosmos. Krishna told Arjun that dharma is rigid as well as flexible. He said that dharma is not just an institutional religion. Dharma is our duty and is of ethical nature. We are born with dharma and have to perform our duties in every situation. Dharma holds the universe together. Krishna told Arjun to be dutiful in challenging times. At the beginning of war between Pandavas and Kauravas, Arjun was hesitating to participate in the war. Then Krishna explained him about how a person should remain committed to duty.

Pride leads to destruction

Duryodhan’s desire for the throne of Hastinapur led him to adharma. His greed for becoming the king made him choose wrong methods. Duryodhan did not think of what is right. He was always proud of his father and brothers. He was proud of his father being the king of Hastinapur. That’s why he felt he can do whatever he wants. But blind pride and wrong actions led to his destruction. One must be careful about actions and thoughts.

Kindness is a great virtue

Karna was known as Danveer due to his kindness and generosity. He used to help everyone and give more than expectation. Karna was the son of Sun God. He had a natural armour that acted like a shield and protected him. Karna parted with this when Indra came disguised as an ascetic and begged for alms. Indra was moved by Karna’s selfless act and gave his vajra. We must be kind to people, animals and birds.

Revenge does not give positive results

Shakuni wanted to take revenge from Hastinapur as he was unhappy with his sister Gandhari’s marriage to Dhritarashtra. He poisoned the minds of Dhritarashtra, Duryodhan and Dushashan. Shakuni wanted Gandhari to be queen, so he instigated Dhritarashtra to become king. He filled Duryodhan with these thoughts from his childhood. Shakuni caused hatred of Kauravas towards Pandavas. His resolution of taking revenge destroyed the Kuru clan. Shakuni’s revenge consumed a civilization and even he died. Revenge is harmful in the long run.

Half knowledge can be dangerous

Abhimanyu had half knowledge of Chakravyuh. During the war of Pandavas against Kauravas, he informed this to others. Still Abhimanyu bravely entered the Chakravyuh created by Kauravas. Chakravyuh was made by Drona, Kripacharya, Ashwathama, Karna, Duryodhan, Dushashan and Shakuni. Abhimanyu was helpless and could not return back. He could not break out of it and these seven people killed him. His half knowledge caused his death.

Focus can help in achieving goals

Arjun was always focused and dedicated to his goals. This made him a winner in all the wars. He was famous among all people for his success in archery. Everyone respected and praised him. Arjun was the greatest archer. We must be focused on our goals and strive to achieve them.

Righteousness must have planning

Yudhishtir was known as Dharmaraj. He was a righteous soul. Yudhishtir was the most mature and kind among the Pandavas. He had great virtues which everybody appreciated. But he could not understand the reason of gamble game. Yudhishtir did not object to Shakuni and Duryodhan. As a result, he lost everything. He lost his wealth, kingdom, brothers and wife. Yudhishtir did not have foresight and planning. In today’s world, one needs to have righteousness along with proper planning. Otherwise it is difficult to survive in this mean world.

One should not be blinded by love

Dhritarashtra loved his children blindly. That’s why he never noticed the faults of his son. Dhritarashtra never reprimanded them in spite of seeing their wrong actions. Duryodhan was the apple of his eyes. Correcting our loved ones does not decrease our love towards them. Rather it prevents them from committing mistakes and becoming a good person. Dhritarashtra should have corrected Duryodhan and his brothers. This could have saved their lives and the destruction of Kuru clan.

Righteousness comes before love

Righteousness is more important than any other thing. It cannot be ignored because of love. Gandhari was the mother of hundred sons. She had noticed the faults of Kauravas. Gandhari was a great lady who always favoured dharma. That’s why she was not in favour of her sons. Before the battle of Kauravas and Pandavas, Gandhari refused to bless her own sons. It was because she knew that her sons were on the wrong path.

We should think before speaking

We must always think and then speak something. Draupadi taunted Karna about his caste during her swayamvar. She had mocked Duryodhan when he had gone to Indraprasth. By her words, she had insulted Dhritarashtra. This angered Duryodhan and he thought of taking revenge on Pandavas. Draupadi’s words indirectly led to the battle between Kauravas and Pandavas. We should know what to speak and when to speak.

Bad company has negative effects

Shakuni poisoned the minds of Dhritarashtra and his sons. He instigated Duryodhan to think of his Pandava brothers as enemies. Shakuni destroyed whatever Kauravas owned. He was responsible for the battle between Kauravas and Pandavas. Shakuni’s presence in Hastinapur led to the destruction of Kuru clan. Stay away from bad company.

Everyone needs loyal friends and unconditional support

Lord Krishna always supported Pandavas while Karna supported Kauravas. Only a loyal friend will support us during thick and thin. True friends support unconditionally by helping in times of need. Duryodhan became strong because of Karna. Arjun became confident because of Lord Krishna. As Pandavas were in the path of righteousness, Krishna always helped them.

Fight for what belongs to you

Everyone in Hastinapur, including the great Bhishma knew that Yudhishtir deserved to be the king. But the circumstances were such that Pandavas had to fight for their rights. Pandavas had received unfair treatment in Hastinapur from their childhood. But that did not stop them from fighting for what belonged to them. Pandavas and Draupadi struggled a lot but finally succeeded in getting the throne. Fight for what you deserve.

Success depends on strategy

Strategy is essential for success. It is always good to plan everything even if plan fails. Lord Krishna had his master plan for the battle between Pandavas and Kauravas. Pandavas could win the battle due to the strategy of Lord Krishna. They believed him and followed all of his instructions.
