Indian Government had issued Motor Vehicle Act, 1989 and under section 129, it is noted that wearing safety gear is compulsory for protecting the head of drivers except for Sikhs (wearing turbans) who are driving bikes in public areas. Recently, the government has modified this act and has added new provisions that justify that every person who is above 4 years of age riding on bikes (including pillion rider) at the public places should wear a helmet. While riding bikes, it is the responsibility of every rider to check the pillion rider is wearing a helmet or not. Many states like Kerala, Maharashtra, and Andra Pradesh are looking further to take this law more seriously. The punishment for violating this law is to pay a fine of Rs.1000 and also the driving license of these riders will be suspended for 3 months.

For four-wheelers, according to section 125-A of the Central Vehicle Rules, 1989, the driver and the rear-front passenger of the vehicle have to wear the seat-belt while the vehicle is in motion. The traffic police would levy a fine of Rs.1000 from the people who violate the law but no licenses will be suspended in this scenario. The matter of fact is that the government is not justifying that using these safety gear will reduce the accident rate. Rather people will be at less risk of fatal injuries if any accident occurs.

Ingredients

For the crispy potatoes

  • Medium-sized potatoes- 250 gm (cut like french fries/equal-sized wedges)
  • All-purpose flour/maida- ½ cup

  • Ginger-garlic paste- 2 Tbsp

  • Oil- 2 Tbsp

  • Medium-sized sliced onion- 1
  • Red chili powder- ½ Tsp
  • Red chili sauce- 3 Tbsp
  • Tomato ketchup- 1 Tbsp
  • Soy sauce- 1 Tbsp
  • Crushed black pepper- ½ Tsp
  • Water- ½ Cup
  • Cornflour slurry- 3 Tbsp
  • Red food color- 1 Tsp (optional)
  • Honey- 1+½ Tbsp
  • Chopped spring onions and some sesame seeds for garnishing

Method

For making the crunchy potatoes

  • Firstly, you need 250 gm of potatoes cut like french fries of approximately equal-sized. After cutting the potatoes or while you’re cutting them, make sure you keep them soaking in water, as this will prevent them from darkening. Take enough water in a pan to boil all the potatoes, add some salt as per taste, and bring the water to a boil. Now, add all the potatoes inside this boiling water. You need to cook these wedges, till these get cooked around 60-70%. That means you will be able to break these quite easily yet the potatoes will hold their shapes.
  • Immediately, strain the water otherwise they will get more cooked. Let the boiled potatoes cool a bit for some time. Meanwhile, will prepare the coating for the potatoes before deep-frying them. For that, in a bowl mix ½ cup of all-purpose flour, ½ cup of cornflour, and some salt as per taste. To this, add little water at a time to make a slightly thick paste so that it coats well with the wedges. Now, add 2 Tbsp of ginger-garlic paste to this thick batter, do not skip this step, as it gives the potatoes an amazing taste. Give everything a good mix.
  • Next, pour the prepared batter all over the boiled potatoes and coat them very well. You need to do this very gently with your fingers, coat each of the wedges nicely, and at the same time don’t break them. You’ll notice that an ideal consistency batter/paste will stick to the potatoes perfectly.

For deep-frying the wrapped potatoes

  • Now, you need to heat some cooking/refined oil in a pan enough to deep fry all the wedges. Carefully add the coated potatoes to the hot oil one by one and not all of it. These will start to cling together just after they come in contact. No need to worry, the minute you drop them they’ll cluster together, don’t try to separate them immediately, take time till they are lightly fried, and then separate it. 
  • Before these become slightly golden, take them out in a tissue paper. Similarly fry rest of the potatoes. This is the first frying, will double-fry these wedges to get that restaurant-style crispiness. This time you need to fry these till they become perfectly golden in color. The double frying ensures that the coating gets very crispy and even after adding it to the sauce it remains crisp for a quite good time. Like those, we often get in restaurants. So, don’t skip this one.
  • After the double frying process gets over, transfer the fried wedges to a sieve as this will let the air pass and your fried potatoes will remain super crisp.

  • On July 3rd a notice issued by the National Testing Agency (NTA) states that the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) and National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) exams will be held in September, which were earlier being conducted in April 2020 .
  • 11 students belonging from 11 states filed a plea. They demanded to postpone the examinations by keeping in mind the rising cases of Covid-19. Many parents and students are demanding to postpone the examinations, as they do not want to risk their lives. While in contradictory to this, many students and parents are relieved to finally hear a date.  
  • But on August 17th, the supreme court has dismissed the plea of students and parents who were seeking postponement of exams. The Supreme court said- A precious year of students “cannot be wasted” and life must go on.
  • Social media platforms such as Twitter were used by students to continue their protest from Monday. More than 4,000 students called for a day-long online hunger strike. And hashtags like- #PostponeJEEAndNEET and #StudentsLivesMatter have been trending on Twitter. The students of different countries are supporting Indian students. And they are also asking the officials to postpone the exams.
  • After this the Master of Home affairs said- There are still no such plans to postpone JEE, NEET but the final decision lies with the Education ministry.

  • Subramaniam Swami (BJP leader and Rajya Sabha member) urged PM to postpone exams till Diwali. He also stated that the Supreme court “doesn’t bind the govt. at all, on whether to now or two weeks later or two months later, the examinations. It is a policy decision of the govt.”
  • Manish Sisodia (Delhi dept. Chief Minister) on Saturday demanded central govt. to cancel the exams. And suggested to use alternative admission methods by keeping in mind the current Covid-19 situation.
  • Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary (Lok Sabha member) wrote to PM on Sunday. And urged to postpone the exams till the situation improves.
  • Rahul Gandhi (Congress leader) also demanded the exams to be delayed. And says that the govt. should listen to student’s ‘mann ki baat’ and come up with an ‘acceptable solution’.
  • Mamta Banerjee (West Bengal Chief Minister) also appealed the Centre to evaluate the risk. And postpone the exams until situation becomes healthier.

We should not let this be a ‘zero academic year’ as it might have consequences on bright future of several students.
  • Sudhir K Jain (Director of IIT Gandhinagar) said- ‘There is no doubt that we are in an unprecedented health crisis due to the global pandemic and the parents and students concern is understandable. But we must also think about the future of our students who have been preparing for this for many years’.
  • Sarit Kumar Das (Director of IIT Ropar and member of Joint Admission board (JAB) said- that the decision of conducting exams has not been taken overnight. They have been looking at possibilities of exams from quiet some time. The points such as, infrastructure, safety and social distancing has also been discussed with health experts.
