Failure of Yahoo!: A Billion Dollar Mistake and A Major Life Lesson

0
Mistakes of Yahoo!

Yahoo! is done, after years of struggle in the online world, it marks its exit.

Yahoo! was among the first ever search engines on the internet. It was an online sensation back in the day when the people came to know how internet works. As a media company, it spread into the market among the masses. With over various purchases around 1995-2001, it single-handedly put it together a multipurpose website gaining high popularity. Yahoo! Broadcast was purchased by the company for around 6 billion dollars with was quite similar to present day’s YouTube. Before there was Gaana or Spotify, there was Yahoo! Music that let people listen to the songs at low prices.

Among the first online website that introduced the world with modern e-mailing was Yahoo! Mail. The organization was at the growing stage with proper advertising that was responsible for its popularity among the other competitors. As a result, Yahoo! had the opportunity of putting together an organization similar to the combination of Google, Netflix and YouTube. The search engine with a cheeky name was once the ruler of the online world.

However, it’s the end of the company and the failure of the foundation it has set over the years. What makes a company grow is the vision, seeking the opportunities and grasping them. Over the course of time, Yahoo! was facing failure in grabbing the right opportunity at the right time. The arising opportunities were at the doorstep waiting for the approval. Nevertheless, the chances went wrong due to the lack of vision and strategy.

Lost Opportunities of Yahoo!

Yahoo! climbed a ladder to success but failed to stay there. As a famous saying goes “Consistence is the key”. This case was somewhat similar to Yahoo. However, it was the consistent decline in the effective decisions and development. News, Finance, Mail, Music, you name it and Yahoo had it all.

Yahoo! is among the major inspirations of the Silicon Valley work culture. Employees could show up in shorts and t-shirts to work and develop the codes. Many of them would sleep in the office hours and work overnight. The introduction to the casual work culture was done by the internet giant way back in the day. However, none of it could help in overturning the failure. The downfall of the company was the result constant mistakes and missing of opportunities.

Declining to Buy Google at just 1 Million Dollars

Larry Page and Sergey Brin

In 1998, Sergey Brin and Larry Page approached Yahoo! to initiate an innovative search engine. The Stanford College Graduates were developing a new technology and were ready to sell it to Yahoo. They were willing to work with the biggest website and offer a price of 1 Million Dollars for the inventive tech. However, David Filo declined to purchase the idea and convinced them to stand out on their own and introduced them to Michael Moritz, the earliest investor. Google was the result of the invention of these grad students.

Though, David Filo was the motivation behind the now-billion-dollar company, one of the biggest competitors of Yahoo! would’ve been off the market. 1 Million Dollars might have been the best deal in the history of Earth for a company like Google. Nonetheless, Yahoo! was lacking vision and ideology. Later, after the establishment of Google, Yahoo! was willing to acquire the company for 3 Billion Dollars. Page and Brin were demanding 5 Billion Dollars. As a result, Yahoo! stepped back once again from buying Google.

Failure in Buying Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg in early days of Facebook

Dismissing Google twice was also not the biggest opportunity Yahoo! lost. In July 2006, Yahoo was placing an offer to attain Facebook. Before the popular household name, Facebook was just a college-oriented social website with roughly 7 million members. The first offer by Yahoo was for 1.1 Billion Dollars which almost confirmed the partnership. However, the deal came to an end with Mark Zuckerberg walking away when Terry Semel cut the offer to $800 million. Yahoo had a clear chance of purchasing what is now one of the biggest companies in the world. According to Peter Thiel, Zuckerberg was never seriously considering selling the company.

Frequent Server Crashes in 2001

Constant Server Crashes

With the increasing competition in the internet world, the quality of Yahoo! kept declining constantly. Google, Bing and several other search engines were emerging while Yahoo was still massive. Nevertheless, the servers of Yahoo kept crashing constantly in the peak of time. In 2001, there were several disturbances among the users as the work was carrying on slower. E-mails were not delivering on time and this was the reason behind the users quitting. Members of Yahoo community were disconnecting due to these problems. These errors were also beneficial for Google as a search engine as the users were considering another search engine with better interface and efficiency.

Promoting itself as a Media Company

Promoting itself as a Media Company

Yahoo! was the first website to introduce the users with e-mail technology. However, it was also among the most entertaining websites on the internet. The latest news, viral videos and attention grabbing headlines did manage the traffic to increase. With Broadcast and Music, Yahoo! had the upper hand over all the other websites. With the aim to grow as the biggest media company, it stubbornly spread itself as one. Nevertheless, it kept ignoring the technical improvements and latest innovations in the website. The regular news updates and viral articles with cheeky headlines were not enough to hold the viewers as the interface kept failing and the newer technology was lacking in the search engines.

Refusing Paid Search Ads with the Organic Search Results

Refusal of Paid Search Ads

One of the major reasons for the shutdown of the company was the losses it was facing. Yahoo! over the years have been refusing the paid ads to co-exist with the organic searches. This was one of the biggest mistakes by the company that ultimately led to its downfall. The belief was that the profits could be earned by the viewer traffic which in-turn led to a loss. For the first few years, it kept refusing the possibility of making money by advertising and increase its revenue. Ultimately, Yahoo realized its mistake and acquired Overture, the company that invented paid search advertising for $1.6 billion. However, it was too late as Google already stood on top of the market.

Dismissing Marissa Mayer as the CEO

Marissa Mayer

According to the employees at Yahoo, Marissa Mayer was one of the only CEOs who had the “strategic vision”. Some of the higher authorities at Yahoo also kept mentioning how Marissa Mayer alone transformed the company which resulted in survival of the company for a few more years. Marissa Mayer was planning and developing to launch a mobile application of Yahoo. Also, she was preparing a set of most innovative plans over the years to prevent the elimination of the company. However, Yahoo has never been famous for making good decisions. Trouble soon began for the organization when Marissa Mayer was dismissed as the CEO of the company in 2017. The never-ending defeat was the result of lacking a visionary leader in power. As a result, it failed to rise in the market once again.

Rejecting Microsoft’s offer at 44.6 billion in 2008

Microsoft

There were several big mistakes and lost opportunities that Yahoo failed to notice. However, the final nail in the coffin was refusing the offer of Microsoft round-the-clock. The biggest company in the world was planning to save Yahoo! and make the best out of it. Microsoft was continuously approaching Yahoo to purchase the company. In 2005, 2006, 2007, Yahoo had already rejected it multiple times for 30-40 Billion Dollar Deal. Nevertheless, Microsoft’s final offer of 44.6 Billion Dollar was made to Yahoo which was eventually declined. As a result, the company kept failing later in the market due to losses.

Later, Yahoo was sold to a company called “Verizon” at 4.6 Billion Dollars. The website is dead, all the content is being deleted and the mails are being cleared. Verizon has plans to re-launch Yahoo as “Altaba”.

online classes

The pandemic propelled us to build a new culture and get used to the “new normal. Studying or attending online classes during the crisis is a new and different challenge for students which they are expected to be well aware of. Attending online classes is not as easy as it might seem. Constant screening causes irritation in the eyes, and the earphones plugged in reduces our capability to listen. But we are left with no option. So, besides all the cons and the problems that we face, here are some of the tips for managing your time and doing smart work during online classes.

Get assignments done in between the break

Since there are no internals exams or tests, guidelines opted for the rule of continuous evaluation which involves doing assignments, preparing for quizzes, and tests regularly. To ease off the pressure, try to break the assignment into small tasks and complete them during the breaks or at the time of canceled lectures.

Practice during the classes

Smart work and time management during online classes

Not listening in the lectures and still passing in the exam is the hidden talent of students. But since we have limited options for clearing our doubts from teachers, try to focus and pay attention in the class. Do and practice questions along with the teacher while she is teaching. This will save your hunting time on the internet afterward.

Move your body

One advantage of online classes is that the traveling time is saved. Use this time to do exercise or yoga for at least 30 min once a day. You may use online free apps to guide you (if you are a beginner or need help). Moving your body will help you remain focused and concentrated and will boost your immune system, which is a necessity during this pandemic.

Wake up early

Online classes along with the extra assignments have disturbed our sleep cycles somehow causing mental distress. Staying mentally strong for online classes is the biggest achievement. To triumph this, try to go to bed between 10-11 pm and wake up around 6-7 am. This will give you enough 8 hours of sleep and will help in managing the stress.

Try to finish your work or study early in the morning instead of staying up late at night.

Get assignments done one day before the deadline

Working under pressure or deadlines can be tedious and frustrating. To enjoy a relaxing weekend, set your customized deadline one day before the actual one, and try sticking to it. Let’s suppose you have been given assignments with deadlines of Sunday. So, set your deadline to Friday, work more if you need to but complete that before-hand. It will not only help you stay up to date but also provides you with a sensation of serene moments. As a very famous proverb says “Work for living, don’t live for work”.

Keep a track of your attendance

Smart work and time management during online classes

Remember bunking the classes, going to college, and not attending a single class? Since now it’s an online class, your gut feeling does not allow you to miss one, and to stay alert and updated, you must keep a track of your attendance so that even if there is a patchwork of missing reports, you have your track to show.

Gather all your notes

The libraries are still closed and access to offline hardcopy books is still difficult. Teachers have been sending notes in the form of pdfs, presentations, and in other different formats. To keep track of all the topics discussed, it is highly recommended to save all your notes of one particular subject in a separate folder. Let’s say you make a folder of the semester, then inside it, there are subfolders of different subjects (you know the rest). This will keep you stay organized with less or no chaos.

Maintain a to-do list

Smart work and time management during online classes

So many works to be done? So little to remember? We all have faced such situations when we have plenty of works to do even if that means making a call to someone, but we all tend to forget half of them. To avoid such tragedies with you, make a to-do list of daily chores, and try maintaining it. Prepare it in the night for the next day and review it for the current day. All the ticked items will make you feel more confident and happier.

Selfcare time

Smart work and time management during online classes

Never, I repeat, never forget yourself while doing anything or with anyone. Remember, “You cannot give your best if you are not feeling best”. Spend some time with yourself (at least 1 hour) every 24 hours. Introspecting oneself will boost your inner ability to fight with the dilemma and make you stronger. Enjoy this one hour. Do what makes you genuinely happy whether it is singing, dancing, painting, standing or sitting in the balcony and doing nothing, or reading a novel.

Stretching during the classes

It’s your eyes that are exposed to the screen more than the regular. Try to do some eye exercises or yoga while sitting on the chair or using a pen or pencil after one or two classes or during the break. Being sitting continuously for long hours makes our neck and back stiff causing muscular pains in the respective regions. Try to stretch your body after every one hour just by standing and stretching out the muscles or walking for 10 minutes before heading back to the work.

Be prepared for the day

You should be prepared beforehand for the next class or the next day. This will try to ease the burden on you and will save you from having on the spot panicking just because you cannot find your notebook. Check your timetable before sleeping for the next day and be mentally and physically ready for another happily occupied day.

This is an unexpected phase for all of us. We have to keep faith in God and most importantly, ourselves. Do not let this situation snatch away your real talents and study. Work hard to achieve your dreams and set the stage on fire.

You rock!!!

Don’t just go through this pandemic, instead grow through this pandemic!!

Here’s why you should opt to change your metabolism

All You Need To Know About 'Metabolic Diet'| See How It Purposes

Fundamentally, your body converts the food you eat into fuel. And henceforth, the faster your metabolism works, the faster your body remodels the essential nutrients from the assimilated food into energy. Well, if that being the only job of your metabolism then why do people often link the metabolic diet with a healthy pick for weight loss? If your metabolism is much slower than it should be, then your body tends to store those nutrients in the form of fats. Rather than burning them up. And here the work of a high metabolic diet comes into the picture. This diet certainly makes your metabolism faster, and thereafter you burn those fats instead of storing them as it is.

What’s even more? Low-carb diets will significantly prompt your body to burn fat for energy production. This in return a compound named ketones is being composed. So, what’s the uncommon point here to be marked? Well, these ketones tend to decrease your appetite. Ketones are acids that are produced by your body when there isn’t enough insulin to get the required sugar from the blood. And, here comes the stage when your body shifts to burning fats instead of carbs. However, too many ketones can be toxic specifically for people with diabetes. Yet, a smaller amount of ketones in your body is not what a thing to worry about.

There has been a constant debate and confusion around the utility of coronavirus masks during this pandemic. Researchers have concluded that they offer a great deal of protection against the novel virus. With many countries emerging from the lockdown, opting for a coronavirus face mask is the need of the hour. They act as barriers against respiratory droplets from travelling into the air and further onto other people.

A few reasons why face masks are essential for surviving COVId-19 pandemic:
  • Highly contagious nature of the virus
  • Potential transmissionfrom asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic patients
  • Undeniable evidence from Asia, where masks are routinely used

Can Face Masks Prevent Coronavirus from Spreading?

Face masks does help avoid the spread of COVID-19 to a great extent provided you wear a good quality mask. However, it is possible to be infected with Coronavirus even when you are wearing a mask if the mask is not of the best quality. Therefore, you must know how to check the quality of masks before buying them for regular use.

coronavirus face masks are designed to contain small droplets that come out of mouth and nose when you talk, cough or sneeze. If you have contracted this virus and are not showing symptoms, the mask reduces thechance of spreading the virus to others. When Do you Need to Wear a Coronavirus Face Mask?

As the number of COVID-19 cases are rising in India, face masks are the need of the moment. One of the best precautionary measures is to wear the mask everytime you step out or when there are more than three people around you (mostly in public places). Also, keep in mind that wearing a coronavirus face mask is half the battle won. Alongside, you also need to practise proper hygiene, which includes frequent hand-washing with alcohol-based soap and water.

WHO professionals recommend that when you are in public places where it is difficult to manage the ideal 6-feet distance from others, a coronavirus face mask must be used.

Some  of the other essential tips include:

  • Wear cloth made N95 face masks in public places, especially in areas where significant community-based transmission is possible, such as pharmacies and grocery stores.
  • It is not advisable to put face masks on children under two years old, people who have breathing problems or those who are unable to handle the mask on their own.
  • It is preferable to use a cloth face mask if N95 respirators are not available.
  • Medical professionals should maintain extreme caution while putting on a Coronavirus face mask. These masks should preferably be used alongside a face shield that covers the entire front and sides of the face extending to the chin.

How to Select the Right Mask?

The importance of wearing a mask is repeatedly being stressed during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is why you must know which mask will provide you with complete protection. Homemade masks are not made of suitable material and cannot prevent the virus from spreading. Also, they are unlikely to fit the face appropriately. Hence, relying on homemade masks could increase the risk of infection.

For complete protection, you need masks with a high viral filtration efficiency. As it would be imperative to wear masks 6-12 hrs a day, make sure to select a Coronavirus face mask that has super low breathing resistance keeping the temperature and humidity conditions in mind.

Coronavirus face masks such as the Airific from reliable brands like Nirvana Being tick all the above boxes of quality checks. It is the world’s first nanotechnology-based mask and has been tested with a viral and bacterial filtration efficiency of 96% by Nelson Labs, USA. It guarantees a life of 60 days, assuming daily usage of 6-8 hours.

So, make the right mask your weapon in this fight against Coronavirus and protect yourself and your loved ones.

If you see an advertisement at any corner of your newspaper, do not blindly believe it. It’s been a very common custom to put an attractive commercial in the newspaper, seeing which students get fascinated. So, consider the government authorized advertisements only.

If the college demands for cash deposit instead of online payment, then it’s a sign of reassessing things as it can be a way to drain your money in the name of the college. So it is advised to pay through checks, bank drafts, and digital payment.

Try meeting the management in-person to avoid being misguided by any online duplicity. Some colleges lead a very misguided information bulletin.

Always check for colleges that have been granted recognition by the government. The government has set up Regulatory Institute which provides recognition to professional courses.

They design their fake commercials in a way that attracts students. It is always good to take the advice of any ex-student of that college for getting assured about your next step towards the college.

Exploitations happening around

  • It had been reported that a gang in Delhi, was involved in making fraudulent copies of degree and certificate, and the cops were successful in laying their hands on. The gang was getting strong in making great business by selling around 50 thousand fake school and college degrees and had a successful set up of the fake website.
  • The gang had advertised its fraudulent business to several universities and people got jobs in government sectors as well, according to Times of India. They sold fake certificates and degrees of eminent universities for several lakhs and are reported for deploying around 40 of its members for possessing this scam in different parts of India.
  • In India, about 80-90% of students take the assistance of an agent who acts as a mediator between college and students. The agents involved in this scam receive incentives from the colleges and institutions possessing this racket and their only work is to reach out to students who are dependent on external sources for getting admission.  It is very much required to research the university yourself plus if you can extend to any ex-student would be a great help to your decision.
  • The shortlisting of colleges outside India is dependent on agents. Research well about the authenticity of university and check for the address of the university being legit.
  • According to Times of India, around 2823 teachers employed in government schools in Uttar Pradesh back in 2004-05, used fake degrees issued by a renowned university of Agra. The government has now decided to recover back salaries paid to them which is estimated to be around 900 Crores.
  • Similar cases can be witnessed in Jodhpur (Rajasthan) recently, where the Enforcement Directorate (ED) attached assets amounting Rs.12.98 Crores on an educational trust involved in fake degree case, according to India Today.
  • So, all these practices are leading to a massive loss of jobs and employment of people who want to earn through illegitimate terms. While doing so, the deserving ones get deprived of opportunities, and talent gets eclipsed.
Short and important tips to save yourself from a fake college trap

When applying for a job with fake degrees and updating resume with multiple degrees and several qualifications, sometimes doesn’t require any third party to verify the mentioned backgrounds. This can very easily provide a job. It’s now that people are involving a third party for verifying the backgrounds and rechecking with universities. This extremely unethical way of getting into the job has always ruined the lives of people being fired from the company and offers being pulled in. Sometimes, companies don’t always go by the number of degrees you are holding rather, they focus on your skills which they require for their company (except for MBBS and few other services). So, if we can prove ourselves that we are capable of doing the required work irrespective of holding certain degrees, can also give us the possibility of a job.

Bitcoin in Venezuela

0
petro

While many have countries have either outlawed Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies or don’t want to be anywhere near them, many have accepted them with open arms. Venezuela is one prime example of it.

In the past couple of years, the South American country has developed its own cryptocurrency called Petro after concerns that its fiat currency the Venezuelan Bolivar is losing its ground. The Petro was officially introduced in 2018 by president Nicolas Maduro himself to the dismay of the Western world.

A couple of years later, Venezuela has legalized all cryptocurrencies and is enjoying all the benefits they offer. Even bitcoin casino gaming have been a popular past time in South America so the view of bitcoin is definitely changing.

In 2019, strange news shocked the world when Venezuela announced that it has such a big Bitcoin stash that it doesn’t know how to use it. This was near the end of the year and well after the Petro cryptocurrency was announced. US sanctions against President Nicolas Maduro have isolated the South American country from the global financial system and nearly destroyed the Bolivar.

Maduro and the central bank knew it was time for a change, and that the financial support they needed could only come from cryptocurrencies. In just a short time, the government created a cryptocurrency regulating body led by Carlos Vargas. Previously, the government has been seizing Bitcoin operations and collections, but from 2018 onward, it has returned them to their previous owners and dropped criminal charges.

Bitcoin mining and possession are now perfectly legal in Venezuela. From June 2020, Venezuelans are allowed to use Bitcoin to pay for goods and services at 20,000 PoS terminals around the country. There’s great belief that the struggling South American country will get out of the woods sooner rather than later, and it’s all thanks to Bitcoin.

This is exactly the reason why Venezuela is a prime example of how Bitcoin can help struggling financial systems. During the COVID-19 outbreak, it became pretty clear that the fiat money system and royalties are simply too volatile. Even with Bitcoin’s volatile price, the leading cryptocurrency in the world showed a lot of promise in these perilous times.

What Does the Future Hold?

The future for Bitcoin in Venezuela is very bright. With Bitcoin mining and possession perfectly legal, Venezuela may end up a cryptocurrency haven we’re all been waiting for.

It’s a perfect example of how cryptocurrencies can help a struggling financial system. Banks are not involved in it, so debts will be a thing of the past. With no banking fees involved and a peer-to-peer focus, it becomes clear why people like it so much and governments and banks hate it.

While there were many opponents to Maduro’s Bitcoin legalization, we can safely say that Venezuela is on the right track. The Bolivar may be failing, but Bitcoin is going strong together with the Petro. Maduro may be hated by central financial systems and the West, but he has given his people hope with the legalization of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies.

If other countries were to follow Venezuela’s example, we would all be enjoying the perks of Bitcoin. Such a time will hopefully come soon.
