Whenever we tend to throw something like paper, food peels, leaves, etc there are small tiny creatures in nature – the bacteria – which eat these things up or turn them into useful products that nature loves. These things are called ‘Biodegradable’.
‘Non-Biodegradable‘ things, on the other hand, like glass, steel, and plastic – cannot be turned into useful, nature-friendly products. The bacteria just can’t eat them up or break them up.
Plastic is harmful because it is ‘Non-Biodegradable’. When thrown onto land it makes the soil less fertile. When we used to throw plastic in water it chokes our ponds, rivers, and oceans and harms sea life.
Sometimes because of eating plastic animals may get
sick because plastic might get stuck in their stomach. Why? Because the
bacterium in their abdomen cannot break the plastic up into smaller pieces.
Several tons of plastic moving around the world’s oceans have garnered a lot of media attention recently. But plastic pollution arguably poses a much bigger threat to plants and animals – together with humans – who are based on land.
Very little of the plastic we discard every day is
recycled or incinerated in waste-to-energy facilities. Much of it finally ends
up in landfills, where it may take up to 1,000 years to decompose, leaching
potentially toxic substances into the soil and water.
Researchers in Germany are warning that the impact of microplastics in soils, sediments, and freshwater could have a long-term negative effect on such ecosystems. They say terrestrial microplastic pollution is far above marine microplastic pollution – estimated at four to twenty-three times higher, depending on the environment.
The study estimates that one-third of all plastic
waste ends up in soils or freshwater.
Most of this plastic disintegrates into particles
smaller than 5 millimeters, referred to as micro plastics, and these break down
additional into nanoparticles (less than zero.1 micrometers in size).
The problem is that these particles are entering the food chain.
Toxic effects of Plastic
Chlorinated plastic will release harmful chemicals into the encompassing soil, which may then feed into groundwater or different surrounding water sources, and additionally the ecosystem. This can cause a variety of probably harmful effects on the species that drink the water.
Let Bamboo Make Replacement with Plastic in Your Life
Unless you’re living during a vast bubble of denial, I
believe we will able to} all agree that plastic product is usually bad!
Plastics have a negative impact on the earth.
It’s time to take a step back and look for
alternatives to that product, and bamboo is proving to be a solid answer. Bamboo
is associated with eco-friendly various to several everyday products.
I’ve been buying and using the bamboo products a lot of and furthermore the years as against plastic products. The look and feel of bamboo are positively higher than and beyond plastic, however, there should be additional positive aspects to bamboo than simply aesthetics.
That led me to analyze the foremost impactful reasons why we must always use bamboo rather than plastic.
So why should we use bamboo rather than plastic?
Bamboo is a highly renewable, natural material that
has antibacterial, antifungal properties and is biodegradable as opposed to
plastic.
Plastic will take up to a thousand years to biodegrade
and is that the leading reason behind mass pollution everywhere the world.
Bamboo has become the “green gold” of nowadays as a
result of its numerous positive qualities compared to harmful and wasteful
materials like plastic.
In a time when most of our homes are filled with plastic, and knowing the strong negative effects of owning plastic, it’s time to wake up to the green alternative that really is a planet saver; bamboo.
Using Bamboo Instead of Plastic
Bamboo has very tall and solid trunks; Bamboo mainly
belongs to the grass family.
Some can grow almost 1 meter in twenty-four hours. Our society is so used to using plastic products now that it’s part of our daily life. It’s cheap, convenient, and light. However, it’s also becoming clear that it’s really not the best choice of product to use every day for health reasons and for its life cycle. It has been proven that all plastic secretes estrogen imitators that are a precursor to cancers and other related health issues.
Importance of Bamboo:
1. Bamboo is a grass, not a tree. It is naturally
organic and dos do not require pesticides, fertilizers or irrigation to enhance
growth. It instead grows like a weed.
2. It is antibacterial & hypoallergenic
3. Bamboo can be made into reusable wooden baskets.
Over time even when these disintegrate, they go back to dust – a natural
product that even when ingested by animals is not toxic to them.
For better or worse (and more recently, worse),
plastic has changed our everyday lives. Being one of the financially cheapest
materials to produce on the planet and its ability to take many physical forms,
it’s been a game-changer in the kinds of products we’re able to manufacture.
Think of every cell phone you’ve owned, every toothbrush, the packages you open
when purchasing something from the store, and even the materials used inside
our cars.
Plastic has been a staple within the growth of our
culture, society, and economic affluence, but it’s come at a fairly heavy
price.
In what ways, you might ask? Well, some include:
• 50 percent of
the plastic is never reused or recycled in the future.
• After 1000
years plastic has been biodegrading.
• In the world,
Over 1 million plastic bags are used every minute.
• Over 17 billion
pounds (8 billion kilograms) of plastic end up in the ocean every year.
These are just some of the reasons why using plastic
is having a detrimental impact on our lives and environment and why we need to
reduce our use of plastic. Year after year these problems only get worse when
not properly addressing the issue of replacing plastic with a more
eco-friendly, sustainable solution. That’s where bamboo comes in.
In recent years, bamboo becomes “green gold” for
modern times.
This super-powered plant is really a grass and acts
like a weed in terms of however quickly it will grow and wherever it will live.
There are numerous reasons to move away from plastic
and switch entirely to bamboo.
Some of these reasons include:
• Bamboo can
grow without fertilizers or pesticides.
• Bamboo is
naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.
• Bamboo can
regrow to adult size to be harvested within 3 to 5 years.
• Bamboo can grow in many different environments
countries like China, Africa, South America, USA, and India.
• Bamboo is biodegradable.
• Bamboo produces 35% more oxygen compared to
similar plants.
• Bamboo
naturally helps rebuild eroded soil.
• Bamboo
almost never needs replanting.
• Bamboo is an
extremely durable material.
• Bamboo plants need less watering so, often requiring no irrigation systems.
Popular Bamboo products that replace plastic products
Now you might be question yourself that which products should I buy that is made up of bamboo?” There are lots of varieties of bamboo products that you can swap from plastic to bamboo. While we currently aren’t able to swap everything, since plastic is still a major staple in the retail world and arguably does provide value, there are still numerous options available.
Bamboo Cutting Board
Probably the best start in your migration from
plastic products to bamboo products is with a bamboo cutting board. I bought
the Extra Large Organic Bamboo Cutting Board by Royal Craft Wood (link to read
reviews on Amazon) and absolutely love it. This contribution is totally worth
it because the nature of bamboo ensures it’ll last a long time and it’s
naturally resistant to fungus and bacteria.
Think about all the times you’ve cut veggies before or after having just cut some beef, chicken, or another kind of meat. Plastic doesn’t resist any sort of cross-contamination as opposed to bamboo, so getting a bamboo cutting board is an easy win.
Bamboo Serving Tray
There are so many different kinds of bamboo serving
trays out there; you’ll never have a problem finding the one that best fits
your style. Bamboo serving trays are currently on demand and are steadily
replacing plastic, wood, and other less sustainable materials. As a matter of
fact, the Solid Bamboo Serving Tray by Lipper International (link to read
reviews on Amazon) is what I own due to being durable and able to hold a full
dinner in one goes.
The added benefits of owning a bamboo serving tray are that they’re extremely durable, they’re easy to clean, and they look great when used for serving as well as a decorative piece.
Disposable Bamboo Cutlery
Whenever you go to a BBQ or some get-together, it’s
almost always the case that the cutlery is made out of plastic. This is how
we’ve always done it, but the problem is that it can be extremely wasteful
because plastic cutlery is mainly a one-time use product and rarely gets
recycled. The Disposable Bamboo Cutlery Set by Bamboodlers (link to read
reviews on Amazon) is a perfect choice and is far better than any plastic
competitor out there.
With disposable bamboo cutlery, not only is it naturally biodegradable and anti-bacterial, but it also looks great! The combination of looks and eco-friendly disposal is a huge win in my book.
Bamboo Toothbrush
Every Dentist says we should replace our toothbrush
after every 3 to 4 months, which means if everyone in our house is using
plastic toothbrushes, you’ve got a lot of plastic waste. Unfortunately, many
plastic toothbrushes are made with the help of other materials, like rubber,
and other synthetic materials, so throwing them away is very harmful to the
environment. If you plan on getting a set of bamboo toothbrushes, you
definitely want to check out 100% Natural Bamboo Toothbrushes by GoWoo (link to
read reviews on Amazon). Trust me, they’re amazing.
That’s why making use of bamboo toothbrushes is an excellent way to help the environment. In my opinion, they look and work fantastically, and even my family started appreciating them after I bought them.
Bamboo Drinking Straws
You can probably imagine that there is a huge number
of drinking straws we use on planet earth. Sadly, as I’m sure we’re all aware,
most plastic straws end up in the garbage, which goes straight to a landfill.
Me and my family use the Organic Bamboo Drinking Straws by Worthy Picks (link
to read reviews on Amazon), which even come with a handy cleaner.
Using bamboo drinking straws has become a very popular way to battle with this environmental disaster, and I love to see it becoming more popular as time goes on.
The fad behind using Bamboo Products?
Moving from plastic to bamboo is just a new fad, and
I can understand that feeling. Every year we’re blasted with “Go Green!”
advertising and it’s become common to ignore it due to disingenuous marketing
and advertising. At the same time, we have a planet that’s becoming more and unhealthier
as the years go by, therefore addressing this crisis by reducing our use of
plastic is very important.
Bamboo as an alternative to plastic is a viable
solution in many use-cases. The disadvantage of plastic usage is that it is one
of the major contributors to pollution on the plant is a very good reason to
find an eco-friendly, renewable alternative, and I’m so thankful that the
bamboo plant is a great replacement for this. The qualities of bamboo can
really help our earth and hopefully, one day, it will become more common in our
retail world.
Unfortunately, we can’t replace everything made of
plastic with bamboo because plastic is still a very useful material in daily
life. Regardless of its negative impact on the environment, we still need it
because it’s extremely cheap, malleable, and abundant.

What is the first thing that clicks your head when you hear the word optimism? Positivity? Looking at the good in every situation or something on these lines? Well, optimism surely is all of this but it is not just those things. My personal experiences and situations have made me gain a deeper insight into what optimism actually is. Optimism to me is simply put self-belief and faith. It is not giving up even when the odds are against you. It is the real form of the saying “The Grass is always greener on the other side”. If you dig deep and analyze optimism, you will know that it is just perception. If you look at the half empty glass, instead of the half that is filled, it’s going to build your perception that way. You are giving in to pessimism. Optimism is the way you look at things in any situation of life. It will make or break your personality.
optimism is the key to a good life
Optimism and Personality Development :
I’m sure most of you must be wondering how does personality development have anything to do with optimism? Well, it totally does. Personality Development is just one of the aspects affected by optimism. Let’s take up a scenario wherein two candidates are appearing for a job interview process. Both of them are equally qualified and skilled. One of them is very optimistic and is confident (Not overconfident) and has a positive attitude. He is optimistic and believes that he will bag the job. On the other hand, the other candidate is very low on self-esteem and is negative. He is not sure if he will bag the job. This example clearly shows us that if we already fill our mind with negative Thoughts we start sending those signals in the universe. It is most likely for the candidate with a positive attitude and the correct skill set to get the job. He has sent out that message in the universe and his body language and attitude will speak for him in the interview.
Faith changes everything
The Signals we send to the Universe:
The moment you start
thinking about any object, person or situation, You start throwing energies
related to them in the universe. Every single thought of optimism or pessimism
starts to manifest the moment it enters your head. I know that these are very
deeply analyzed things and some of you might not be able to gauge the depth of
it. It took me 2 years myself to actually understand how optimism and energies
are interconnected. Just go to notice one day, how what you think and how your
mood affects your entire day.
If you start your day on a positive and a happy note, the entire day is bound to go that way. If you start off your day in a bad mood and with negative thoughts, the entire day is going to go about that way. Energies really play a big role in our day to day life. This is how people get intuitions regarding how a person is from the vibe they get in the first meet. Some people tend to radiate positive vibes and a healthy personality. Whereas some people have the potential to just put you off with their energy.
Where
did this concept evolve?
It has been long known
by all of us that human beings are nothing but tiny specs of dust in this large
universe. No one really believed this fact, but eventually many people started
reading more about it and started agreeing to this philosophy. This theory
states that the universe has energy in abundance and it is always radiating
that energy. We human beings are just small point sources who derive our energy
from the universe. Hence what you send to the universe, you receive it back in
abundance. You send optimistic thoughts, love, and happiness, the universe will
bless you with all of them. Contrary to it if you give in to pessimism and give
hateful thoughts, bad vibes, jealousy, etc to the universe, they come back to
you in return.
How
does Optimism help you achieve your goals?
For all of you who have the read the bestseller “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne, I’m sure it must have helped you at some point in your life. Well, this book is based on the concept of how your thoughts change the incidents in your life and how you can manifest what you want. The right thoughts and the right practices can give you everything that you want. It could be Money, fame, success or a materialistic thing. It all depends on how badly do you want it. The moment you want a particular phone, dress or a job, your request is heard by God. Now it all depends on how you synchronize your hard work in the same direction as your goal.
The
Cosmic Kitchen- Universe
The universe is
analogous to the Cosmic Kitchen, where millions of orders are placed every day.
Once you decide you want something, the order is sent. Just like When you order
a dish in a restaurant and wait for it to be prepared by the chef, Once the
cosmic kitchen has your order, you need to wait for it to prepare your order.
The most important thing here is if you are not working towards what you want
with an optimistic approach and putting in sincere efforts, The order can’t be
served. When you want to eat French fries do you go to dominos or Mc Donald’s?
Obviously MC Donald’s right, so similarly when you want your request to be
answered, you need to put in the effort required for the same.
Your order is on it’s way!
Once you start working in the direction of your
goals, All you need to do is be patient, trust the process. God will fulfill
your wishes when the time is right. Have faith and keep working. There is no
way that after working hard and believing in the process that your wish will
not be granted. Keep an optimistic approach all along!
The most important rule is, you cannot be negative
or doubt the process even for one second. Have full faith that what you want is
already yours. Keep a positive approach always, or else the process will not
work.
Meditation
– The most important Tool
Meditation is nothing but being at peace and harmony
with yourself and your surroundings. It is a state of art. A way of living.
Many people think meditation is all about posing to be like saints and reciting
mantras in your head while practicing breathing. This notion is not right.
Meditation is basically a lifestyle that one must adapt if they want to connect
with nature and the universe, radiate positivity and maintain a healthy life.
Breathing is an essential skill that goes hand in hand when practicing
Meditation.
Meditation helps you stay composed
Most of us today are not even breathing with both
our nostrils. I’m sure most of you won’t agree with this, but it is the harsh
reality. We are either breathing from the right nostril or the left, one at any
given time. The switching period is between 3-4 hours. The right side is
analogous to the sun and we breathe from that side mostly when we are angry,
frustrated or irritated. When we are at peace and happy we tend to breathe from
the left side. It’s like yin and yang. For breathing properly it’s essential to
practice meditation with breathing exercises.
Meditation leaves you at peace, happy and also helps
you release all the harmful toxins from your body. Your mental health will
become better with time, as you keep practicing meditation regularly.
How
are meditation and optimism connected?
Well, meditation not just helps you to be at peace,
but also helps you to think positive and become an optimistic person, Just
notice how you feel once you have meditated. You will feel like positive energy
is running throughout your body. Meditation also helps you to change your
perspective and become more patient.
A person who practices meditation is bound to be
more peaceful and be optimistic. In today’s fast-paced world where we are so
carried away with all the clutter in our lives. No one is paying attention to
their mental and physical health. Hence meditation is the only way one can find
peace in this competitive world.
optimism and meditation
The Soul Connect:
Optimism and meditation definitely go hand in hand
and you acquire both of them only when you are ready to face your fears, insecurities,
and regrets. Meditation will change your whole way of thinking and Optimism will
help you achieve all your goals. A person who has mastered them both has
mastered his life. They make you a more responsible, sensible and joyful
person. You learn to look at the good in every person and situation. In all, if
you are an optimistic person, trust me you are more than halfway ahead in the
journey of life when compared to your peers. Practicing meditation on top of
this is just a cherry on the top.
Mcleodganj is the one-stop destination for those who yearn to visit hillsides. This is one of the most attractive tourist sights which fulfils to promise the scintillating views of the mountains. It is situated on the outskirts of Dharamshala, in Kangra town of Himachal Pradesh. In Mcleodganj is located, His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Main Temple.
If you are fortunate, you might also be able to listen to the teachings and preachings of Dalai Lama who visits it much often every year. There are a large number of Tibetan monks that can be seen preaching and praying inside the temple. People can either take quite long peaceful walks with family during the evening or the more adventurous ones can also opt for trekking and other fun-filled activities. I had never witnessed snow, so watching squall was my foremost preference. It was a sudden plan with the friends of the college and we quickly reserved our seats and found ourselves vacationing during the republic day holidays.
How to Reach
Mcleodganj?
Flights are available till Gaggal Airport that is the nearest airport to Mcleodganj. From there you could avail cabs or shuttles. We as college kids went for a more frugal ride and chose a semi-sleeper Volvo bus from Majnu Ka Tila, Delhi to Mcleodganj. It was a 13 hours-long but cosy ride. We reached Mcleodganj by 12 pm and directly headed to Hotel Anand Palace, located in Bhagsunag. The staff was really kind and jovial. We did not dine in the hotel and headed out. We had sour supper at the famous German Bakery restaurant. Their hash potatoes were something to die for.
Places to visit in Mcleodganj :
1. The Tibetan Market
Apart from the Dalai Lama Temple, there is one of the major attractions that tourists love the most. It is the Tibetan Market. The market was filled with Tibetan gift items, potteries and what not. It seemed a bit tad too expensive but a little bargain helped us buy a lot of items. The items were so delicate and beautiful. We bought a lot of articles from there. Statues of Buddha, singing bowls, dream catchers, cushion covers, bohemian jewelry, colourful clutches and mandala paintings were some of the gifts we bought for our family and friends. After a full day at the trek, it was indeed a peaceful experience.
2. Kangra Fort
The fort is located on the outskirts of the Kangra Valley. It is often described by many people as one of the best forts in India. Its architecture goes thousands of years behind. It was an impromptu plan to visit this place as the staff of the hotel suggested we go there once. We were so happy seeing what the fort stored for us. There were many statues of various lords. We could spot some families asking their children to pray to the gods there. The entrance was beautifully built and we loved every part of being there. We were so happy seeing what the fort stored for us. There were many statues of various lords. We could spot some families asking their children to pray to the gods there. The entrance was beautifully built and we loved every part of being there.
3. Naddi View Point
For people who want a peaceful time away from the bustling streets of Mcleodganj, Nandi ViewPoint is the one-stop destination for them. We met a lot of people who live in that village. It was fascinating to know about their day to day lives. They told us about how many foreigners come to meditate there to attain peace while glimpsing at the Dhauladhar Ranges located at a distance. If at any time, the temperatures start dropping down, the villagers offer cosy home stays at their place. I was awestruck by the serendipity of the place. I wanted to stay there more but one of my friends caught a cold so we had to go back to our hotel.
4. Triund Trek
On our second day, after hearing a lot from our friends, we decided to go on the famous Triund Trek. Triund is the centre of attraction of the scenic Dhauladhar Range. The trek was somewhere between easy to moderate levels of difficulty. We started from Dharamkot and passed alongside the famous Guna Devi Temple where we prayed and paid our obeisance. The people were too helpful. They kept on offering me and my friend’s food and water. We stopped at various Maggi points to have little breaks and enjoyed our magi and tea there. It is one of the most beautiful trek destinations of Mcleodganj
We came
through several little streams and ponds. It took us almost two days to reach
till the top. It was exhausting and tiring. We were all weary. But the view we
witnessed after reaching the top was worth it all. It was so calming and
beautiful. We have had our camp set up there. We stayed there for one night. It
was a night full of dances, songs and making friends. We left from Triund the
next day with a heavy heart and full of warm feelings.
5. Bir Billing
It was one of the most adventurous parts of our trip. I had never been that close to the sky. We visited this pretty place via travelling through a toy train. The mountains that were crossing our ways, the scenery and everything were so exhilarating. I was introduced to paragliding at Bir billing. It was an experience of the lifetime. We visited the Chokling Monastery, the Deer Park and the place where some of the refugees of Tibet still reside. It was a good experience all in all.
6. Bhagsu Waterfall
Bhagsu
Waterfall is located on the way while coming down from the Triund Trek. We were
all tired from the trek but one of my friends dearly wanted to go and pray at
the Bhagsunag Temple. We reached the place and soaked our feet in the chilly
water. One of my friends soaked her feet in haste that her socks got wet too. We
had a hearty laugh over that. We had some warm tea and Maggi while watching the
mighty waterfalls. There was a lot of crowd and the atmosphere was really nice.
After a while, when we got hungry again we went to the nearby pretty café
called-Namgyal Café. We had our lunch and then clicked some pictures and spent
a happy day.
7. Dharamshala Cricket Stadium
Located in the middle of the Himalayan ranges, this stadium is one of the highest elevated stadiums in the world. People might think how weird it may be to visit a cricket stadium while visiting the hills but this stadium attracts a lot of tourists all around the year. The architecture of the stadium makes it a unique standout. It is built with modern style architecture infused with Tibetan era work. We were fortunate enough to witness the Cricket Team of Kings XI Punjab practising. It made a beautiful end to our trip. We boarded our buses back to our home towns and bid a goodbye to the beautiful land of Mcleodganj
Is Mcleodganj a budget-friendly travel spot?
Finally comes the most important question of the trip. The answer to all the students and kids would be a big YES. The travel expense can be broken into three parts.
Travel
We took a semi-sleeper Volvo bus from Majnu Ka Tila, New Delhi. The fare was around Rs. 850 per person. The return tickets from Mcleodganj to Majnu Ka Tila was around Rs. 900. You mostly have to walk in Mcleodganj. At one point from Nadi to Bhagsunag, we rented an auto for Rs. 20 per person. Apart from the travel expense was nothing more.
Lodging
Our trip was of 2 nights and 3 days. We rented two rooms. The room accommodation was Rs.1137 per day. The cost was distributed among two people. So it was a pretty economical stay at the Hotel Anand Palace.
Food
We went to various cafes and bakeries. We ordered pasta, pancakes, doughnuts and a lot more. As surprising as it might sound but we had Maggi that was more expensive than the food at some restaurants. Food was much lower in cost than we had expected. Per person, food-budget was approximately Rs.400 per day.
All in all, it was a pretty budget-friendly and pocket-light trip. My overall expense of the trip was Rs 5500 for 3 days and I came back completely satisfied.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD is a mental condition, characterized by repeated thoughts and ideas that create a constant urge to perform a specific action. In simple words, an OCD brain would trick you into believing that you need to perform an irrational task in order to avoid disastrous consequences. For example, a number of people with OCD tend to wash their hands more often in order to avoid germs, for they think they might catch an incurable disease otherwise. OCD can take various forms; from people refraining from shaking hands to even getting into a habit of offering prayers 29 times a day, just to ensure that their family members don’t die.
It is important to note that most people follow certain rituals, like waking up early or brushing daily, but these do not necessarily qualify as obsessions. A habit takes the form of an OCD when its resistance leads to anxiety, and it starts interfering with the normal day-to-day activities of one’s life.

OCD tends to get worse with time, especially due to ignorance and lack of proper treatment. Severe cases of OCD often lead to patients becoming housebound in order to avoid compulsions. Moreover, OCD also paves the way for other mental health disorders such as anxiety, including social anxiety, separation anxiety, and panic disorder. People with OCD tend to be very embarrassed regarding their compulsive behaviours since these behaviours are often illogical. This embarrassment causes people to put great effort into hiding their disorder, giving it more time, which makes it worse.
While the exact causes of OCD remain unknown, they are supposed to be caused due to the following reasons:
genetic and hereditary factors
structural and functional abnormalities in the brain
Apart from these, OCD can also be a result of learned behaviours that turn repetitive to calm anxiety.
Common symptoms of OCD include:
Avoiding physical contact, in order to avoid contamination from germs.
Excessive perfectionism.
Blasphemous thoughts.
Common compulsions include:

Excessive washing of hands.
Repetitive checking of locks, gas appliances, electrical switches, and other devices concerned with safety and security.
Forming mental ideas of ‘good’ or ‘bad’ numbers and places.
Excessive praying.
Placing objects in a particular design of symmetry.
Touching objects a certain number of times, or moving them in a particular way.
Why does OCD need attention?
Shockingly, 1 in every 25 adults suffers from OCD, which makes up for approximately 2.2 million people from the total world population. The stigma associated with help regarding mental health often causes people to refrain from getting therapy. Moreover, many people suffering from OCD experience guilt and loneliness, which also prevents them from seeking medical help. Most people, thus, battle OCD alone, until the symptoms start turning severe. Very severe.
This article provides 25 measures that you can use in order to help yourself or someone you love.
1. Recognising and writing down patterns:
Keep a pen and a pad handy and try writing all your compulsive thoughts. Writing down repetitive behaviours urged by the brain helps in both identification and control of obsessions. Repetitive writing causes thoughts to lose power, as well as helps in keeping a check on the frequency of thoughts. Also, writing involves more effort than thinking, causing the thoughts to disappear sooner.
2. Fighting your fears:
As it is rightly said, the best way to conquer your fears is to face them. This technique of fighting your fears, known as the Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) in medical terms, is proven to be one of the best ways of curing OCD. This process involves exposing oneself to thoughts or situations that trigger obsessive behaviour, and not responding to them. This technique was first tested in the 1960s by Victor Meyer on two of his patients suffering from a severe case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
One of the patients was obsessed with cleaning while the other was haunted by blasphemous thoughts. The patients had not shown any signs of improvement with shock therapy, supportive therapy or medication. Just before they were made to undergo a surgery, Victor Meyer locked the former patient in a room full of dirt without allowing her to clean, while the other patient was purposely made to rehearse blasphemous thoughts without performing the rituals she otherwise would’ve performed. This treatment was the first to decrease the patients’ symptoms and has been in continuous practice for treating OCD since then.
3. Challenge to resist:
Another way of controlling thoughts is by recognizing and labeling them as ‘just thoughts’. Training the brain to understand that a call for a compulsive behavior is just a trick played by the hormones helps to have control over one’s action. Continuous resistance, eventually, in turn, helps in pushing the action out of habit. Having a belief that whatever worse could happen, will happen, gives the brain a sense of freedom that it is not in charge of all wrong.
4. Take risks:
Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, more often than not number of times, tend to affect the decision making abilities of the patient. In a study conducted by the US National Library of Medicine based on the “framing effect”, which investigates decision making based on whether monetarily equivalent choice options are framed in terms of a potential to either lose or gain, patients suffering from OCD were reported to be more indecisive and fell more often in the loss section. Taking risks challenges the brain and helps in providing more exposure, which in turn helps proper decision making.
5.Talking to friends:
Source: https://www.123rf.com
Most OCD patients are often shy in talking to a doctor or visiting therapy as they tend to suffer from a sense of constant guilt, which is worsened by the stigmas attached to mental health disorders. Having a conversation with your friends can help in getting rid of the emotional burden, without the fear of being judged. Moreover, talking about obsessions usually reveals behaviours or contexts that would’ve otherwise gone unnoticed. This further helps in having a better grip on your OCD.
6. Don’t strive for perfection:
Source: http://www.steveseay.com
Though being a perfectionist sounds like an all-time advantage, an obsession for perfection is a very common symptom in OCD patients. The strive for perfection takes a wrong turn when one starts having standards for excessive perfectionism, which are impossible to attain. Not being able to achieve these standards leads to a sense of negativity and sows seeds of feelings of worthlessness, all of which have negative impacts on the brain. This can be handled in two effective ways. By setting an attainable standard of perfection, and/or by accepting imperfections directly.
7. Refocus:
Refocusing works by drawing the attention away from one’s compulsive thoughts and focusing it somewhere else. For example, in case of a thought of compulsive praying, the focus can instantly be directed to the weather outside instead, thus drawing attention away from the obsessive thought. Refocusing takes time and is not the easiest method to practise, but it’s you winning at the end. The fifteen-minute rule, as proposed by Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz’s in his “Four steps towards beating OCD” involves the patient delaying the compulsive behaviour for fifteen minutes, before returning back to the urge. Any decrease in the desire to perform the ritual provides for motivation to wait for a longer period. The patient can start from a delay of five minutes and can extend it until the duration when the desire completely fades away.
8. Visualize:
The most common problem faced by people who suffer from OCD is that they continuously keep falling prey to their compulsive thoughts, in order to ease the anxiety. Self-help in this field involves the visualization of already having done the compulsive task. This is a technique of tricking your brain into thinking that you’ve already completed the compulsive task, whereas, in reality, you have not. For example, if one has a continuous urge to wash his hands, he can visualize already having washed his hands, which would trick his brain into not sending hand wash signals anymore.
9.Meditate:
Source: https://unsplash.com
Meditation, since times immemorial has been used to increase mindfulness. Meditation helps to treat OCD in two ways:
Obsessive Compulsive Disorders have scientifically been proven to affect the conscious area of the brain. Most mental disorders, including anxiety, depression, and OCD are a direct result of the conscious mind overload. Regular meditation helps in exercising control over the subconscious mind, which then helps in preventing negative thoughts, while also repaving the damages done by prior repetitive thoughts.
Boosting low levels of dopamine via artificial means has long been used in OCD treatments since the disorder has been noted to cause a decrease in dopamine levels. Meditation causes dopamine levels to increase naturally, helping OCD.
10. Get rid of old trauma:
OCDs can be caused due to a number of reasons. These might include biological, genetic, behavioural, cognitive or environmental causes. However, a number of times, OCDs are developed as a result of childhood trauma or past traumatic experiences. The Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps to treat OCD by understanding one’s history and analysing past experiences that could’ve led to the growth of compulsions. CBT is a short term therapy and helps the patient in changing his thought patterns. CBT is available online on a number of reliable platforms and can also be performed on one’s own by analysing past traumas and changing thought patterns related to the same.
11. Avoid alcohol and nicotine:
Cigarette smoking, alcohol and nicotine have shown to have detrimental effects on a majority of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression and OCD. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) states that alcohol and nicotine can both cause dependence and can lead to an extension of OCD, causing other mental disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder. Avoiding alcohol, nicotine and added products can thus prevent the disorder from getting worse.
12. Exercise:
Source: http://www.oprah.com
Exercising helps in releasing endorphins, which are natural stress busters. A study examining relations between aerobic exercise and OCD asked half of OCD patients undergoing therapy to go for a brisk run post their therapy sessions for a period of 12 days. The results showed a significant decrease in the OCD symptoms of the patients who exercised as compared to the ones who did not. Moreover, exercise also provides for a distraction from the compulsions and provides a healthier channel for your energy.
13. Sleep:
Source: https://www.vectorstock.com
Repetitive thoughts while trying to sleep often result in distractions and it does not take long for it to turn into insomnia. Studies have shown that people going to bed late have less control over their OCD symptoms as compared to the ones who got proper sleep. OCD and sleep thus form a vicious cycle, as OCD causes lack of sleep, which in turn worsens the disorder. Listening to soft music to keep the mind distracted while trying to sleep helps in having proper sleep cycles, which eventually help in reducing symptoms of OCD.
14. Proper diet:
Messages are transferred between brain cells with the help of a neurotransmitter called serotonin. Serotonin, also known as the mood-influencer, is formed from the protein tryptophan and is a reported deficit in a majority of OCD patients. Consuming food rich in tryptophan thus helps in increasing serotonin levels, which helps in reducing OCD symptoms. Tryptophan is present in a variety of protein-rich foods such as turkey, chicken, milk, eggs, and cheese. It is also present in whole-grain foods, beans, and pumpkins. Sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, and nuts are also rich sources of tryptophan.
15. Manage stress:
Stress is not a cause of OCD but major OCD symptoms are triggered under situations of stress. Stress management can thus prove to be of great help in dealing with OCD symptoms. Relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga and even slow breathing help in calming the mind and managing stress better.
16. Get mad:
A large number of OCD patients get sudden rushes of rage, commonly termed as anger attacks. This anger is easy to understand as people suffering from untreated OCD do not only feel compelled to perform obsessive behavior to keep their anxiety calm but also are under the constant stress of not letting their tasks get hampered, as that feels equivalent to letting someone die. These anger attacks can often take a turn of violence, where the patient may try to physically hurt others. As scary as this might sound, small bursts of anger that do not run severely out of control have been proven to help OCD patients. Outbursts help in calming the mind, helping it relax.
17. Grounding:
Stress or panic attacks are common symptoms of OCD. In the case of such a scenario, the grounding techniques work wonders. These techniques usually follow a non-complex process to make one more mindful of one’s surroundings. Something as simple as having a bite of chocolate, and feeling the way it melts on your tongue, can be an effective method of grounding. Another method, called the 5 – 4- 3 – 2 – 1 technique of grounding involves acknowledging five things that you can see, four that you can touch, three things that you can hear, two that you can smell and one thing that you can taste around you. The process is followed by slow breathing and is by far the easiest most effective method of grounding to manage stress.
18. Healthy Channelizing:
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder patients have been shown to consume more than one hour per day practicing rituals in normal cases, whereas the time dedicated was increased to approximately three hours per day in severe cases of OCD. This energy can instead be channelized more productively in other tasks. Distracting the brain to focus on things other than the compulsions is one of the most effective ways of treating OCDs. It is easy to accomplish, and more importantly, is not accompanied by the urge to perform the compulsion later. While exercising provides for a great distraction along with physical benefits, you can also try giving more time to your hobbies, or visiting nearby places to channelize your energy more productively. Keeping yourself busy throughout the day would lessen the chances of your mind being attacked by compulsions.
19. Plan a vacation:
Source: https://www.travelandleisure.com
Going on a vacation is always fun, but it’s additionally beneficial in the case of OCD patients. A change from the normal surroundings breaks the usual thought patterns, thus lowering the frequency of performing compulsions. While some are able to completely let go of the previous thought patterns, the anxiety due to OCD in other patients sometimes tends to get worse. This again happens due to a disruption in usual thought patterns as the regular compulsions are not being performed. However, regular triggers help the brain, especially when they are least expected. A vacation thus, is a win-win in both cases.
20. Try self-help resources:
Self-help resources, just like this article, are guides that you can use to work on your OCD yourself. It is important to understand that self-help does not necessarily mean doing it all on your own. Mutual self-help groups or self-help online platforms are also effective in guiding self-care. Reading books on self-help is also an effective method that works in two ways: by serving as a source of distraction, as well as by providing the necessary self-help details.
21. Don’t Rush:
An understanding of the fact that OCD treatment can take time is necessary to not lose hope. A desire to recover immediately causes more stress, making the compulsions stronger. Pushing oneself over the limits will only lead to negative impacts and a worsening of the symptoms. A slow process, handling one compulsion at a time, works the best.
22. Maintain a Journal:
Getting over OCDs is a long process and can often get tiring. A constant source of motivation and regular reminders of progress are therefore necessary in order to not lose track. Maintaining a journal with habit trackers does not only provide motivation but also helps in keeping a check on one’s compulsions. It thus becomes easier to spot warning signs and red flags when an obsession starts getting stronger. Ease your urges by getting a journal today!
23.Take Responsibility:
It is necessary to understand that mental disorders can only be well treated if one is willing to work on them on one’s own. Slow or no improvements during the initial days of therapy can often lead to distress and outbursts on friends, family, and even the therapist, but it is important to realize that therapy is just for help. The real work has to be done on one’s own part, and improvements will only be seen when you start trying yourself. Medicines and therapy can only help in making the process easier, but cannot cure the disorder.
24. Appreciate your efforts:
Acknowledging the hard work put towards a better version of oneself serves as another source of motivation to keep the brain going. Congratulate yourself every time you get over a compulsion, and treat yourself every time you are able to control your urge for a duration longer than the previous. After all, a little motivation goes a long way.
25.Keep trying:
Not losing hope is the key to OCD treatment. There occur numerous instances when patients give up to their compulsions, but what is more important to understand, is that it’s okay. You might fall, but you win every time you manage to get up. These instances of downfall are often demotivating, but it is important to not let it grow on you. Remember that every step you take leads you to a healthier tomorrow.
Self-help accompanied with regular therapy sessions, medications and homework exercises help in speeding up the recovery process. With the rising awareness regarding mental health diseases, OCD treatments are now available widely across the world. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, like most other mental disorders, takes its time but can be cured completely with proper medication and self-help.
