As we all are well aware “Where it is right, there is remedy”. Thus, every woman should have aware of her rights to claim all those legal remedies that the law has provided to her.

Right Against Sexual Harassment

10 Rights That Women Should Know In India
sexual harassment law is very important. But I think it would be a mistake if the sexual harassment law movement is the only in which feminism is known India. #womensLiberation

Sexual harassment is an uninvited behavior that is offensive and humiliating in nature. It is a kind of harassment that involves unwelcome promises in exchange for sexual approval. In simple words, it is an unwelcome physical and verbal behavior of a person in authority in regards to a subordinate, a student or an employee.

Sexual Harassment attacks on the modesty of women.  Thus, it makes her uncomfortable to reside in society with pride. Sometimes, the woman also feels insecure in the workplace because harassment can be done by anyone (i.e. employees, higher authorities, workers).  When a women go through harassment at the workplace it becomes an obstacle in achieving the potential target fixed her.

Remedy

Bullying and questioning the character of the woman is an offence. It is punishable under sections 294, 354, 354-A, 509 of Indian Penal Code 1860. The honourable Supreme Court has provided guidelines in Vishaka v. State of Rajasthan regarding sexual harassment at workplaces against women. Then they constituted a committee to resolve the matters of women in the organization.

Recent scenario

28 January 2021 Bombay High Court held that “Act of Holding A Minor Girls hands and Opening the Zip of Pants Won’t come under ‘Sexual Assualt’ Under POCSO Act”. But under section 354A (1) (i) Indian Penal Code (IPC) is an offence of sexual harassment.

Right of Maternity Benefits

10 Rights That Women Should Know In India
hope maternity leave is great! But not so great that you decide not to come back to us…!!!

The government has provided women with paid holidays from work called maternity leave. She can get this benefit during the pregnancy, after and before childbirth. The minimum leave gives a call of 12 weeks and the recommended is for 14 weeks.

Further, Maternity Benefits Act, 1961 mentions the advantages of pregnant women. These benefits are for the women after and before the birth of the child. Maternity allowances permit paid leave to all pregnant women. Thus, Parliament enacted this Act for the welfare of women. The reason behind this was various reported cases of breach of contract due to the pregnancy which is explained by an example.

For Example-

‘A’ the Principal of ‘XYZ’ School drum out a women ‘B’ on the ground of her pregnancy. As ‘B’ was a teacher in the school on a contract basis. So, there was also a breach of contract and ‘B’ becomes unemployed. Where instead, of this she must get some benefits.

Further, this Act applies to each plantation industry, mining, factory etc. Moreover, it extends within the territory of India. For maternity allowances, a woman should know the following:-

  • The company must have more than 10 working employees.
  • A woman must be working with the company for not less than 1 year.
  • The company should give maternity leave 8 weeks before the delivery.

Remedy

Every woman can get maternity allowances with a full salary of 12 weeks. Concerning this additional bonus as well as allowances should be given to her. Thus, it is not legal to reject a woman for not being present in her maternity period.

Leading Case

Indrani Chakroverty v/s Idiom Consulting Ltd, 2012

Indrani filed a petition against ‘Idiom Consulting Ltd.’ for pressuring her to relocate her job. Furthermore paid her half salary on the ground of discovery of her pregnancy. However, The Delhi High Court imposed the penalty, to compensate the woman with Rs 7.5 lakh.

Recent Scenario

Not long ago Smriti Irani – Minister of Women and Child Development, had recently proposed the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Bill 2020. She said it will be a milestone for women’s right in India. The proposed amendment consists of the substitution of various subsections and clauses. Though the target is to extend the upper gestation limit for pregnancy termination under specific conditions. However the government will introduce the MTP bill at the time of the budget session of parliament.

Present day- After Announcement of Budget

Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Bill, 2020 proposes an idea to terminate pregnancy till 20 weeks of gestation. The bill increases the upper and lower gestation limit by 20-24 weeks. This bill also gives an advantage to the survivors of disabled women, minor and rape victim. However, along with this the bill too introduced that the upper limit won’t be applicable in the cases where fetal abnormalities (conditions that affect fetus or embryo) will be discovered by the medical board. Thus the Act provided the structure, functions and the other details.

Hence, the police officer is responsible for the secrecy of statements. Further the Indian Penal Code, 1860 provides that the identity of the victim will not be disclosed. Thereafter, the right to privacy motivates a woman to file a complaint without fear.

Right to equal pay

10 Rights That Women Should Know In India
Equality between men and women concept. this scale depicts the right of equal pay for women. #right of women #feminism #equalrights

Equal pay for equal work can be perceived in terms of gender equality. Equal pay for equal work is a concept of providing facilities and wages to women and man for completing the same amount of work, responsibilities and duties. The Indian Constitution itself doesn’t grant equal pay for equal work as a fundamental right. Nevertheless, various provisions stand for the implementation of this principle.

The Preamble of the Indian Constitution provides equality of status and opportunity. Even Article 14, we all are equal and no person is above law. It states that men and women have equal rights and opportunities in each social, economic and political sector. Article 39(d) of the Constitution of India, 1950 assures the right to equality in pay scale. The Landmark Judgment in Randhir Singh V. Union of India highlights “Equal Pay for Equal Work for men and women”.

The target of uniform pay is to have an equivalent allocation of resources among the people. Hence, there should not be a scarcity of resources (pay) in few hands. However, the expression ‘equal pay’ incorporates medical facilities, basic salary, bonus allowances etc. The main aim of equal pay is to wipe out discrimination. Thereafter, Parliament came up with the Equal Remuneration Act 1976, with a similar target “equal pay, equal work”.

Leading case

Randhir Singh v/s Union of India

AIR 1997 SC 3014

The Supreme Court held that the Indian Constitution has not mentioned the principle “equal pay for equal work” as a Fundamental Right of the citizens. Whereas under Articles 14,16,32, 39 (d); it is considered as a valid constitutional principle. Hence, it includes permanent, temporary as well as daily wage workers.

Recent scenario

Jharkhand High Court observed that ‘equal pay for equal work’ is to be assumed as a fundamental right in service jurisprudence.

Right to confidentiality

10 Rights That Women Should Know In India
Every woman is having right to have the things confidential with their lawyer.
(rights of woman Today)

The principle of the right of confidentiality states that no one has the authority to share the details of the victim unless and until the court says or the victim agrees. Under no conditions, any authority can reveal the identity of the woman. No one can’t defame the reputation of a woman that she holds in society. Thus, there is no means to harm the dignity and modesty of the woman. Whenever a victim files a complaint, it is indeed the responsibility of the cops to keep the victim’s profile confidential.

Remedy

Section 228-A, of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (IPC), punishes the authority on the ground of disclosure of the victim’s profile. Not the police, media, or anyone can publish or showcase the identity of the victim.

Thus if anyone discloses the victim’s profile without the court’s permission, he shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to 2 years of imprisonment and fine.

This is because Sometimes, women feel insecure in the police station on the ground of disclosure of identity. In some cases, the woman suffers from humiliation done by society. Thus, the principle of virtual complaint will protect the reputation and interests of the woman in society.

Remedy

So, to scrap this nuisance, the Delhi cops came up with some guidelines. However, this has given a right to woman of filing virtual complaint addressing senior authority. Additionally, women can file a complaint in any police station and officers to write it. As per Zero FIR, no police station can refuse to register on the ground that it does not come under their jurisdiction.

Right Against Arrest

10 Rights That Women Should Know In India
Right against arrest is in favor of woman and protects her. #women’sRight

The ‘Right against arrest’ states that the police has no right to arrest a woman before sunrise and after sunset. Even if they are having an arrest warrant then also they are ceased to arrest. Hence, there were many cases when police arrested a woman at night. Concerning this, the Supreme Court ruled that they can’t arrest the woman between 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Additionally, it also ruled that there should be the presence of a lady constable to arrest a woman. Apart from this, in a serious situation the only ground for the arrest of a woman shall be notice from the Magistrate. Including that woman should be kept separate from the male cell. In the case of a Pregnant woman, the lady should be arrested with comfortable needs.

Leading Case

Sheela Barse v/s State of Maharashtra

Supreme Court held that it is the responsibility of the cops to keep the women in different cell. Thus in this case a separate lock-up was not available. So, the police should keep the woman in a room apart from the men’s cell.

Remedy

Sec 160(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code, 1973 does not allow the cops to call a woman at a police station, neither for any inquiry nor for investigation. Furthermore, it provides that police/cops should question at her own residence.

Section 53 (2) of the Criminal Procedure Code, 1973 mentions that only a registered female doctor or nurse shall examine the arrested woman and even accused one.

Right of Not Being Called For Interrogation

10 Rights That Women Should Know In India
no you are not allowed to call a woman for interrogation. It should be done at her own residence. (Right of woman in an independent nation)

‘Right of Not being called for interrogation’ says that there is no need to go to the police station for questioning of cops. According to the Code Of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) Section 160, defines that women shall not go to police station for the investigation purpose for recording statements related to the case. Thereafter, if the cops want to do an investigation then they can only do it at their place of residence. And it must be in presence of friends, family or lady constable. If a police officer wants to do an investigation then it should be done without hurting the dignity of women.

Remedy

However, section 160 of the Code of Criminal Procedure states that women are not liable to attend the investigation procedure at the police station. Additionally, if they are not comfortable, cops have to go to the residence of women to interrogate them. In Nandini Sathpathy v. P.L. Dani, it was held that if the police officer has called a woman to the police station departmental proceedings can be initiated against such an officer.

Right Against Being Stalked

10 Rights That Women Should Know In India
Stalking is not a joke and her life is not a part of your business. let her live freely. #RightsOFwoman

Section 354 D of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (IPC )- defines the term ‘stalking’. Stalking is to follow someone with a sick intention or to cause harm to the followed person. Additionally, it also includes wrong gestures and words. Furthermore, section 509 of IPC defines the gestures and words which harm the dignity of women. Thereafter, owing to some drawbacks in sections 354 and 509, the wrongdoer proceeds gets a benefit to move freely from the courtroom. It happens on the ground that it was a bit hard to prove certain conditions:-

  1. Attack against women
  2. Use of excessive force by offender
  3. Harm to the modesty of women

Remedy

Therefore, after the amendment in the Indian Penal Code in 2013, the Criminal act ‘stalking’ became a cognizable, non-compoundable and bailable offence. Which also includes a fine and imprisonment of up to 3 years for 1st  conviction. Subsequently, fine and imprisonment up to 5 years for repeating the same.

Leading Case

Priya Matoo Case

In this case, a young girl was stalked. Thus stalker was the son of a former IPS officer named Santosh Singh. He raped the young law student and murdered her in her own house. Afterwards, various complaints were filed against the culprit. Thereafter, in 1996, the case was moved to CBI. Hence the High Court punished him with the death penalty. Later on, in 2010, it was converted into life imprisonment by the Supreme Court.

Recent Scenario

Criminal Law Amendment Bill 2019 proposes the expression “any person” to take place of “women” and “men” or “other person”. However, the reason was to make the offence gender-neutral. Additionally, the bill inserts the new section 375 A which defines sexual assault. Which includes intentional touching of breast, anus or forcing the other person to touch.

Apart from this, the relevant sections of the Indian Evidence Act 1872, and Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) 1973, are amended to incorporate new section 375 A.

Right Against Domestic Violence

10 Rights That Women Should Know In India
Domestic part does not matter, violence is the violence. #StopViolence #RightOfWomanToday

The term domestic violence is defined in section 3 of ‘The Protection of Women From Domestic Violence Act 2005’. Domestic violence is the behavior of a person whose purpose is to abuse or control a boy/girlfriend, family member, spouse, etc. Abusing is considered a learned behavior of the person, not as a mistaken behavior. This is not caused by drinking, smoking, drugs, etc. but takes place with the will of the person. Domestic violence occurs when one person acts to dominate another in the relationship or the family. It includes misuse of power and can take the shape of physical violence, verbal and sexual abuse, cruelty to pets etc. Generally, it is perpetrated by males against females.

Leading Case

T.V. Rao v/s State of Telengana

Conclusion

Eventually, these rights were ideas, then traveled to legislation, after struggling to get introduced & get imposed in nation. Thereafter today these are written only in books or papers but we can’t see their physical existence or we can’t feel privileged for our rights. The day when girls and women will have access to the locked rights then we will be able to talk about equality in our Nation.

Why Is It So Hard To Trust?

0

To be trusted is a greater compliment than being loved.” ~ George MacDonald

Trust is an important element in the working of not only businesses and markets but the entire world. From electronic payments to giving loans – everything relies on the essential element of trust. As a matter of fact, fiat currency functions inherently on trust. Paper money has no value of its own but it still works because we DECIDE it has value. We keep faith that it will be accepted in exchange for essential things.

While it is common knowledge that things would be smoother if everyone just trusts everyone else, a number of factors stop us from having faith. Thus the question arises, why is it so hard to trust? The basic explanation lies in the fact that it is a temporal issue. The person who makes the initial move, the truster, makes a sacrifice by doing something at the risk of his own interests. There is time involved until he gets to know whether his doing brought out some good to him or not.

You Have to Trust Everyone You Work With -- Including the Ones You Don't Like

Trust through Game Theory

Game Theory explores the play of trust through trust games. The Trust Game is an extensive form game. This class of games allows to incorporate non-simultaneous play, and in particular reactions to previous actions of other agents. The simplest examples, where all actions are observable, include paradigms which have been intensively used in behavioral game theory to investigate prosocial behavior, i.e., deviations from selfishness.

An initial attempt to understand the nuances of trust can be credited to Kreps who invented a Trust Game in 1990. In this game, there is a trustor, the first agent who shows the initial trust by giving out money and there is a trustee, who is the second agent who receives this amount. The trustor has the binary choice to trust the trustee or not, with payoffs of $0 for both players if no trust is shown. In case the trustor decides to trust, the trustee faces a binary choice to either honour it, leading to equal payoffs of $10 for each player, orabuse the demonstrated trust, resulting in a payoff of $15 for the untrustworthy trustee and a negative payoff of −$5 for the unhappy trustor.

The game shares four crucial features, which were put forward by Coleman (1990) to define a trust situation.

  1. The trustor’s decision to trust is voluntary.
  2. There is a time lag between the trustor’s and the trustees choices. Hence, revealing it to be a sequential game.
  3. The possibility for the trustee to abuse or honour the demonstrated trust occurs if and only if the trustor does indeed show trust. Action of one player is dependent on the actions of the other, trust is a two way road.
  4. In case the trustee decides to (fully) abuse the demonstrated trust, the trustor will be left worse off than if no trust had been shown;that is, the trustor becomes vulnerable by exercising trust. This demonstrates why lack of trust is predominant in our world.

This is also evident in common markets when we see 2 adjacent shops selling the same things. Consider two stationary shops built next to each other. One can’t decrease the price of its product to lure customers as the other will do the same. This will set off a tit for tat game where both shopkeepers suffer loss. Now, if they try to collude by promising to keep the same price, say Rs 10 per pen, one of them might break the promise and lower the price to Rs 8. This price will obviously attract more customers and hence more profit for the shopkeeper who broke the trust. It is due to this reason that such collusions are rare and competition in an oligopoly seethes by non-price strategies.

Non-price strategies are measures taken by sellers which don’t include setting and
changing prices of their product to increase sales. For e.g., a priced strategy would include decreasing the price of the product to lure customers. In an oligopoly, such a price war would ultimately ruin business as explained above. Hence non-price strategies are used (such as advertising, extending customer care facilities, etc.).

Trust in Today’s World

In today’s time, with an augmentation of urbanisation and industrialisation, we observe that trust among people is dwindling due to which there is a need for new systems and technology which do not depend on ‘mutual trust’. Technologies are continuously evolving, building unbelievable security systems. One such example is the blockchain technology. Blockchain technology provides a way for un-trusted parties to come to agreement on the state of a database, without using a middleman. By providing a ledger that nobody administers, a blockchain could provide specific financial services — like payments, or securitization — without using a middleman, like a bank. Hence, public blockchains cut down on the need for trusted third parties to verify transactions and give people around the world access to fast, cheap, and borderless payments. This is the reason behind the success of Bitcoin.

It is the basic human psychology which is so complex that we are never assured how the other person would react or believe in our truth and ability. Sometimes, we don’t trust somebody because of their past actions and decisions and sometimes because we are strangers to them! Humans are selfish; our ability to trust also depends on how strongly we want to protect our self interests. Breach of trust is not an uncommon phenomenon – which makes us more skeptical about the people around us. A study reveals that we tend to trust someone more if they have something in common with us, like sharing the same interests. For example, people belonging to the same region will rely on each other even if they don’t know each other and happen to meet in a different place.

Additionally, it is more common to see that trust is honoured in a relation which is long term. For example, chances of paying up pending dues are higher at a neighborhood grocery store as compared to a shop in some far off place where the customer will not return. Sociological understanding is that we are more trusting in closed and smaller communities, an example being that of a rural set up compared to modern urban societies.

Conclusion

In conclusion, three things are needed for the evolution of trust.

  1. Repeat Interactions: The knowledge of the possibility of interactions in future gives one a harbour to cling to.
  2. Possible Win-Wins: When parties concerned play a non zero sum game, in which both can be better off, the possibility of trusting increases by leaps and bounds.
  3. Low miscommunication: Communication is key. It pays to understand and forgive once or twice, but when the level of miscommunication is high, trust breaks down very easily.

How to get constant inspiration for writing poetry?

0
writing poetry

Writing, in itself, is one of the purest forms of art. You can call it magical too. Believe me!

Isn’t it fascinating to note how a few sets of inanimate words start dancing in your head the moment you lay your eyes on them and try to scrutinize them to suck their gist with your critical mind? I bet; it is! Although not everyone tries to critically ponder over poetic pieces, even naïve readings are full of zest.

I won’t call myself an avid reader as many people these days who like to read generally do. Of course, I do love to read, but I’m quite a lazy sort of fellow who doesn’t read on a regular basis. I call myself insane, somewhat due to my extreme mood swings. But that’s pretty normal for me. It’s just that I love to tease my mini-me (my psyche), referring to her as a mad woman. But that man woman does wonders sometimes. She plays a quite remarkable role in inspiring me to indite more and more poetic pieces. Yes, she is my muse. One of my muses. Sounds strange? Wondering how can someone be one’s own muse? Well, so lemme answer all your questions regarding this. I’m sure my random cum some sort of sensible gibberish will aid you in figuring out how to get constant inspiration for writing poetry.

Who is a muse?

Portrait of a beautiful young blonde woman dressed in casual shirt, listening musing with headphones
Portrait of a beautiful young blonde woman dressed in casual shirt, listening musing with headphones

The definition of muse is pretty simple. What inspires you artistically is called a muse. It can be ‘someone’ or ‘something’, i.e., a person or a thing, situation, event, etc. If we talk about examples, then lovers are counted as quite common examples of muses, especially in writing. In order to write poetry, several writers derive inspiration from their personal love life. But that doesn’t mean if one’s lover is one’s muse, one would only be able to write poems on love, heartbreak, relationship, compatibility, romance, etc.

A muse can inspire a person in multiple ways. It often happens that writers who find their muse in their partner or lover, write about their relationship, highlighting their expectations, compatibility, sex life, etc. But it’s often beyond that. Some writers write about what their lovers love or hate, etc. For instance, I know a great writer who is also a good friend of mine. She mostly writes on the mundaneness of middleclass working men’s lives. Sometimes, she also writes poems on sports. But she says that her only muse is her husband. She takes inspiration from the ordinariness of her husband’s life, and sometimes also writes about what he loves the most, i.e., cricket and football. So, this is what a muse does! Muses inspire – only inspire (with no strings attached). The inspiration can be in any way. All what an artist gets from a muse is some ambrosial seeds of artistry, and then they amalgamate their imagination with their inspiration to sire aesthetic pieces of art. I hope now you clearly know what/who a muse is and what it does.

Can I be my own muse?

Oh dear, it is a question of no doubt. Of course, you can. Anyone can. Even we all can. It’s all about inspiration. When you can get inspiration from others, then why and how not from yourself! It often happens with me too. Before writing a poem, I often make myself my muse.

Once I was untangling my twisted mane in front of a mirror. While doing so, I looked at myself and started wondering about the profoundness of what I was doing. Soon I realised that I can use it as a metaphor to write about the complexities of human life that how we get stuck in our lives, and the more we try to detach ourselves from the web of worldliness, the more it pinches us and makes us feel forlorn. To add some more details to my poem, I looked at the innocent face in the mirror and wondered about that girl’s dreams – what dreams she must’ve had before getting forcedly tied to the mould of a housewife. My inspiration along with my imagination pierced me, and it pricked somewhere deep down my heart, but I wrote. And, this is what a writer wants – something/someone to write on/about. I was glad on seeing myself in a new light that day – as a guide, an object of inspiration, a muse. I’d really like you to try this once. Try writing something after deriving inspiration from your own self.

Can I have multiple muses?

Why not?! All of us have, where some notice that and some don’t. The things around us, the people around us do inspire us in some way or the other. You can be your muse, your parents can be your muse, your lover can be your muse, your friends can be your muse, the weather at your place can be your muse, your pet can be your muse, your room can be your muse, your city can be your muse, your lifestyle can be your muse, your habits and attitude can be your muse, and what not!

How to get constant inspiration for writing poetry?

Inspiration is available in multiple forms. All you need is just to figure out what works for you!

  • Observe a lot. Just be alert all the time and keep observing the things and people around you. Who knows where you find your muse and in what form!
  • Just imagine. Imagination knows no bounds. Feel free to imagine whatever you can and can’t. Be quirky with your imagination. Go wild (as much as you can). Imagination can aid a great deal in making you figure out your muse.
  • Merge in your mind what you observe and imagine. Let’s take the help of an example. Suppose you are in a room. Observe all what’s around you. Look around yourself. Suppose your eyes stopped roving when you looked at the ceiling fan. What came to your mind on seeing it? Suppose you were highly depressed that day, and the fan seemed to be symbolic of an escape to you. Now imagine something fresh and occupying. Suppose you imagined the fan to be a UFO sent by the Almighty as a source of energy and refreshment; it comes down to give you a chance to enter it for a couple of minutes to recharge yourself whenever you are feeling blue. Now imagine more and more and more, and connect the dots to form a fanciful or/and fascinating product of imagination. And ta-da, it’s done. Now tell me, ain’t it amazing how a simple ceiling fan of your room became your muse and helped you pen down a poetic piece? It’s interesting, no?! Wanna try? You surely should. Poetry is as simple as that when you have a muse.

I hope after reading this article you won’t have to struggle even a bit in getting inspiration for writing poetry. Well, good luck for your search for your muse/s. Feel free to share your experiences with your muse/s in the comments section.

Optimise Your music Sessions

When I took the decision to set out on my musical journey, I knew that it would take monotonous practice to get there. So i started practicing like hell..I would just pick up my guitar or any other instrument and ramble on for hours. But did that made me good at them? Not at all.

Cause practicing hard doesn’t always mean that you are practicing the right way and learning new things. But I didn’t realize that. I would just grab my instrument and start singing my favorite songs and call it “practice”.
And this showed in my playing skills too. I wasn’t able to play correctly. You too must’ve experienced this too while learning your instrument..So what’s the best way to tackle this problem? Well according to me, there a handful of solutions for how to practice your instrument the right way:

Create atmosphere:

Get the right set-up for you. Whether you prefer to concentrate in a quiet practice room or somewhere with more stimulation, try be consistent with your choice. This will help you enter the right mindset when you begin to practise.

Make sure you have everything you need close by: water, snacks, pencils, sharpeners, rubbers, highlighters, manuscript paper – it will save you a lot of time. Technology can also be an amazing aid, providing you don’t spend too much time faffing with it. Why not download free apps that act as a metronome, a tuner or a timer (all essential tools for practising)?

Warm up:

Like a physical workout, a warm-up is essential. But don’t just plough through the same warm-up routine every-time and let your mind wander – a warm-up isn’t just about getting your muscles moving. Take it as an opportunity to prepare your body and mind for work and take stock of how you’re feeling, how you’re breathing, the tension your body is holding and why you are doing that particular exercise.

Your warm-up doesn’t always have to be 15 minutes of scales; try different technical studies or sight reading. If you are going to do scales, consider the keys of the pieces you are rehearsing. And as a cool-down, revisit a piece of music you already know well and enjoy.

Be realistic :

We all grow up with our teachers telling us “don’t leave it until the night before”. We’ve all been guilty of it at some point, and if we have an intimidating part to practise, it is easy to push it to the back of our mind. However, it is much more effective to practise little and often, and slowly chip away at your nemesis day by day.

It’s about quality, not quantity. If you aim to practise smarter, not longer, you will find yourself with a lot more willpower to draw upon. By setting small and realistic goals, you will find you overcome tricky areas much easier, and you’ll be less likely to beat yourself up for not completing absolutely everything you had planned.

Pick a certain aspect concerning you, and then practice it:

Instead of mindlessly playing your instrument, pick a certain aspect of a piece or a song that you find difficult or intricate and practice it till perfection. Only practice the part you find difficult instead of playing through the piece again and again, Thus, saving time. Play through the whole thing when you think you’re done. This will not only increase your skill level but will also help you play intricate pieces with ease.

Instead of practicing for long hours,  practice short. But between regular intervals.

This will be very useful to create a creative thought process during your practice sessions as longer practice sessions tend to create a negative environment for your creative mindset to work. But make sure to have regularity in your sessions. Maintain a fixed interval between your sessions. For example, practice half an hour to one hour between a 4-6 hour time frame. In this way you can practice multiple times a day and prevent straining yourself too much.

Plan your practice sessions by maintaining a list of what to practice:

Pick a few topics you want to cover during your practice sessions before you sit down to practice, saving time and thus, moving in planned way. This helped me a lot as i always used to search for things to practice – when i was practicing. So this wasted a lot of time which i could easily utilize in a productive manner if i pre-planned my sessions. Maintain a journal and make notes of topics to rehearse, and always keep a track.

Write on your music:

Don’t be afraid to scribble on your scores. Obviously some music does have to be treasured, but photocopy your score and do whatever it takes to make it easier to interpret the music. If you miss something once, make a mental note. But if it is a common occurrence then don’t be afraid to write in the correct fingering, highlight dynamics or remind yourself of a key change.

Set a time-frame where you just jam along

All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. So pick a time-frame where you just jam along your favorite song and just have some fun! Maybe you could record covers and post them on YouTube, social media etc and showcase your talent to the world! This will also help you assess yourself and will instill a sense of confidence in you. So jam along! Cause music is all about having fun and expressing yourself!

Try to practice with a friend rather than practicing alone:

Practicing your instrument with a friend is always better than practicing alone. Having a practice partner makes your sessions more fun and involving. You could always help each other out and maintain a collective creative process. It will increase the scope for learning new things and will pull you into the learning process. So go on! Call up your buddy and start learning and having fun!

So these were some tips on how to practice the right way. Which have benefited me and my musical abilities a lot. However, besides practicing techniques and strategies, some people still find it difficult to shoot up their creative abilities and get involved in the musical process. This is mostly due to lack of motivation and inspiration. Don’t worry, I’ve been there too. If you ever feel deprived of motivation, try learning and practicing your favorite songs first, songs which you love and just can’t help but put them on every playlist you make. This will get you involved and help set up a positive learning attitude in yourself. So don’t hesitate! Remember, PRACTICE will make you perfect and push your musical abilities far beyond you can imagine…
