BLACK HOLE emits radiation?- HAWKING RADIATION

0
backhole

Black holes are neutron stars with such a gravitational force that even light cannot escape from it.

A black hole is a mathematical solution. A neutron star over the critical mass gets so dense that it forms larger and larger time dilation relative to the outside universe thus we get to see what happens on short time scales.

But what causes it to emit radiation?

Blackhole

Hey friends! here I am with a new article – Hawking Radiation, theorized by Stephen Hawking in 1974 (a small effort to remember him).

Hawking Radiation! The phenomenon that has been baffling physicists since its discovery. The process that describes the death of a black hole or the process by which a black hole “emits” radiation. The very fact that radiations are coming from a black hole is in itself mind blowing!
The thought came into existence after it was mathematically proved that black holes have an entropy. The presence of entropy signified that it must have a temperature. And as we know from the laws of thermodynamics, it meant that it must be radiating energy and thus loosing mass.

The equation that describes the entropy of a black hole is:

S = (Av^3) / (4hG)

Where, S is the entropy and A is the area of horizon.
This wonderful expression contains the three fundamental constants of nature: v, the speed of light; G, Newton’s constant of gravitation; and h, Planck’s constant. Wow!
This expression helps to establishes the relation between gravity and thermodynamics.
We can also see that entropy is directly proportional to area of horizon. As the area of horizon increases entropy of a black hole increases, which may happen when a black hole sucks more mass or when two black holes merge to form a single black hole .

The larger a black hole is lesser would be its absolute temperature. The temperature and mass follow the following relation:

t = (hv^3) / (8(pi)Gmk)

Where, t is the Hawking temperature, h is Planck’s constant, G is Newton’s constant of gravitation, m is mass of the black hole and k is Boltzmann constant.
The explanation to Hawking Radiation combines Relativity and Quantum Mechanics – The science of the very big and the science of the very small, respectively.

Quantum Mechanics, in a strange way as it is, talks about the creation of virtual particles in vacuum. These particles pop up on themselves and immediately annihilate giving energy. These particles are matter – antimatter pair. When matter and antimatter annihilate, they both vanish and give energy. The vacuum is not essentially empty. These new particles always keep on popping .

If this process takes place near the event horizon, chances are one of the particles, the one with negative energy will get sucked up and the other with positive energy will escape into the Universe as a real particle. As the negative mass gets inside the black hole it reduces some of its mass. For an observer seeing it from outside, the positive particle would appear as radiation and it would appear that the black hole is losing mass. Thus, the black hole will lose matter, particle by particle and gradually evaporate with time.

From the principle of conservation of mass, and relativity, we know that mass and energy are inter convertible. For a reminder, the equation:

E=mc2

This equation tells the energy possessed by an object of relative mass m, moving with the speed of light or the similar nature of mass and energy. The particles that are formed near the event horizon, are formed using the energy from a black hole’s gravitational potential energy. Thus, making it loose energy and eventually mass.

This happens incredibly slow at first. For a super massive black hole, it is really insignificant. Reasons being: A, its large event horizon; B, high suction to emission ratio and C as we have seen from the above equations that temperature is inversely proportional to the mass of a black hole. The process gets faster as the black hole becomes smaller.(The scientists at the Large Hadron Collider hope on making one such ultra-tiny micro black hole in order to study Hawking Radiation.)

When it arrives at the mass of a large asteroid, its radiating at room temperature. When it has the mass of a mountain, it radiates with about the heat of our sun. And in the last seconds of its life, the black hole radiates away with the energy of billions of nuclear bombs in a huge explosion. The wavelength emitted is same as the size of a black hole. As size gets smaller, the wavelength also gets smaller. The largest of the black holes are the coldest and the smallest ones are the hottest. BUT, this process is incredibly slow.

The last of the largest of the black holes may take a googol year to evaporate (hundred zeroes after 1). This period is so long that when the last black hole radiates away, nobody will be around to witness it. The universe would have become uninhabitable, long before then!

A proper explanation to the Hawking Radiation needs a quantum theory of gravity, that is, the unification of gravitation and quantum mechanics – the two giants of modern physics. We are working towards it but haven’t achieved it yet. We have better hopes from future.

So, this was all for today. Hope you found it informative. Will be back soon. Till then thank you very much.

Discuss What Potential Impacts and Effects Terrorism Has on Tourism

0
Young couple with baggage on the street. Travel and tourism

Since forever, tourism has represented an essential component of economic development and growth, and the tourism industry can be easily included among those who have shown, in time, a continually growing trend. There are countries where tourism represents a primary industry, and from a global point of view, tourist numbers are permanently growing.

As for each industry or economic sector, threats can also be identified for tourism too. Most of these threats have social or socio-economic origins, and they lead, in most of the cases, to crime rate increase but, above all sorts of threats, the tourism branch faces, terrorism is the one that has the most significant effects, lasting the longest, in comparison with other risks (Weber, 760-763).

Today, tourists’ safety is a growing concern, and being safe on vacation has become an expected requirement, no matter the location. It has been observed lately since terrorism’s threat has become more stringent, that destinations with the fearsome reputation are easily substituted with other similar/close destinations, perceived by tourists and the public as being safer.

Even if tourism has been since forever a successful economic branch, this fact did not act as a shield in front of terrorism’s destructive power. There are also numerous natural disasters, for example, that can significantly influence tourists’ numbers in specific locations, but nothing keeps tourists away from the way terrorism does. The danger associated with terrorism has immense potential for intimidating tourists. Since this is not new information, as terrorism, as a phenomenon and a form of political expression, can be identified even back in Roman Empire’s glory times, when Zealots organized a terrorist campaign against the Romans, to drive them out of Palestine.

Three main directions have been seriously approached in the tourism and terrorism literature lately: the reasons for terrorist attacks on tourist destinations, the impact terrorism has on the demand in tourism, and which are the possible solutions for risk minimization and threat elimination. The very volatile relationship that exists between terrorism and tourism is also magnified by the media and the online environment. Especially, as terrorist attacks are broadcasted, and the information spreads faster than ever. In these circumstances, travel risk should be in-depth studied both regarding real and perceived threats (Reisinger and Mavondo 212-245).

Understanding terrorist behavior comes very handily in untangling this tourism-terrorism relationship. Research shows that terrorist attackers deliberately choose touristic destinations, and this allows them to reach their primary goal, spreading fear. Politic and economic instability, destination image destruction, population isolation are other goals, and, at the same time, significant effects terrorism has on tourism. Since 9/11, several strategies have been developed, both at a global level and at national levels, to create a healthy defense in front of terrorism’s threat (Baker, 64).

The impact terrorism has on the tourism and travel industry has essential dimensions, and it can lead to many socio-economic issues, such as homelessness, unemployment, and deflation. Since tourism contribution is significant for many countries, terrorism’s influence is a significant cause of concern, both at global and national levels. Not only traveling and tourism are affected by terrorism, but also adjacent industries and economic activities, such as hotels, airlines, restaurants, and retail industry. Terrorism is a challenging, continuous evolving concept, and its relationship with tourism is very complicated. Many factors are contributing to tourism growth, and at the same time, multiple factors influence terrorism’s development too. All in all, as long as tourism is a growing industry, so is terrorism threat.

Ways to Create a Relaxing Environment at Home

Trendy home interior in modern boho style

What truly defines a home? The practical definition will always be a roof with walls containing a bed and bathroom. Many would call apartments, hotel rooms, or even the open sky their home. While that’s a home at its most basic, you know that it’s much more than just that. Perhaps, the less practical definition of a home is any space where you feel the most comfort.

Building a living space that you can justifiably call home takes some deep thinking. How do you make your living space worth living in? If you’re looking for Dayton houses for sale, do you know exactly what you want to make it a relaxing space for you and your family? Listed below are some suggestions that you can use to create a relaxing home environment.

Declutter Your Space

What’s the first thing you do when moving in? Unpack all of your belongings and get settled in. Sometimes you’ll find a place for your stuff, other times they pile on. Having too many things and feeling cluttered can make your space more stressful than you realize. Take the clutter out of your life! Sort out your loose items, and try to find places for them. Throw out anything you don’t need. You can also make some extra money by selling gently used items.

Find a Calming Color Scheme

The color of a room can work wonders on your mood. Blues and greens are two common colors used in bedrooms to promote feelings of tranquility. Doing a complete paint job is common, but these colors can also be incorporated as wallpaper or similar accents. Avoid using vivid colors such as yellow and red on their own, as they can be aggressive and overwhelming. Vivid colors can be mixed with tranquil ones can be incorporated in the form of pillows or throw rugs.

Bring Nature Inside

Do you wish you had more time to spend relaxing outside? Incorporating nature into your life can make you feel invigorated. Keeping houseplants is a common, low-stress activity. With some containers and healthy potting soil, any garden orchid can be a houseplant. Basic examples like the snake and jade plants are small and easy to find. Some can be very ornate like Bonsai trees or even exotic fare like pitcher plants. There are also plenty of houseplants that require very little work.

Separate Work & Play

Are you using your rooms for their intended purposes? What separates one room from another is the business done inside it. Kitchens exist for cooking and bedrooms for sleeping. Although this might seem obvious, it’s important that you use each room for what it’s meant for. Designating rooms for specific functions can boost your concentration levels. If your job is highly technical, then set-up a home office where you keep your personal computer and equipment. Single out a spare room that allows you to unwind and entertain guests.

Create Positive Thoughts

Sometimes, a picture on your wall is just a picture. Other times, it can evoke positive or negative memories. Photos, trinkets, and other objects displayed in your den are powerful in helping your frame of mind adjust to your environment. Try to examine which displayed items evoke negative thoughts and remove them. This gives you the chance to replace them with positive reminders of experiences you’ve had. Do this and your home and personal life will improve.

Make a Comfortable Climate

Have you found that you sleep better in a cold room or feel more comfortable in mild temperatures? The basic method of improving your home’s mood is from adjusting your thermostat. Temperatures ranging between 68 to 70 degrees are comfortable enough for indoor climates. In the evenings, a slightly cooler temperature of 65 is perfect for restful sleep. Climate can also differ based on location, of course. Adjust to whatever temperature that’s best for you.

In an age of Social Networking, when your worth is measured by the number of connections and the depth of your network, Social distancing is a very far-fetched concept and very difficult to digest. With all the shopping malls, movie theaters and offices locked down; with all the sport matches and mass gatherings cancelled, I hope you are a responsible citizen with full respect of this mandate made by the government and reading this article sitting in the happy nook of your home.

Although we might be caught up with “working from home”, considering the time spend daily to get ready and commute TO and FRO from office is saved big time and we are stuck with a lot of free time and with very little idea of what to do with it. Some people have been reportedly struck with depression with sitting at home and not been able to socialize. Hold on! Here are some tips to help you get over with it!

  • How many days have you thought about de-cluttering all the unwanted mails, the extra icons cluttering your desktop, the duplicate files and folders eating up the space in your mobiles and laptops, pictures and screenshots no more required and movies and videos you would no more see. Well, this is the perfect time to delete those trash files, sort, clean and arrange for more free space.
  • This is a great time to catch up with your school and college friends through video calls and phone calls, call your relatives whom you never got a chance to call back and made some excuse about office meetings or semester exams. Specially, you need to talk to your grandma and grandpa, because due to their old age they must be feeling much more threatened than us and need more moral support.

  • In this time of lock-down, I don’t think house-helps are still available and hence, this would be a great time to test and use your culinary skills, clean and arrange your room in the exact way you always wanted to do it. Although, this is something you have to do under compulsion in case your house-help does not turn up, but think about it! You can carry out all those fat-cutter recipes you always wanted to, or try out those fancy baking videos from Youtube that had you drool over all these times.
  •  How about taking ideas from Youtube on room decoration and trying your hands on them? One disclaimer: Here I never mean to say you buy items from online platforms to decorate your room because in times of Coronavirus that is very dangerous. You can simply cut out flowers, figures, paper chains or decorate using fairy lights. They can make your room look amazing.

  • This is a great time to hone your hobbies and take up something that gives you pure happiness! Dust off that guitar, take out your music notebook and simply play it! Might be a little rusty at first, both the guitar and your efforts, but trust me you are doing great! Practice singing, painting or start your own blogging channel. You will find so many sites that teaches foreign language and also gives a certification. Go for it!

  • This one I don’t think I need to tell you! Take absolute liberty to binge on movies and series on Netflix, Amazon Prime or Voot. You can try watching Game of Thrones, Friends, Witcher, Good place, Hunters, Peaky Blinders, Narcos, Big Bang theory etc. Some hindi series are also breaking the glass ceiling such as Kota factory, Family man, Asur, Sacred Games, Ghoul, Special Ops etc.
  • How about engaging in elaborate skin care, hair care and D.I.Y.s and pamper yourself to feed your skin and hair with all the nourishment that they yearned for so long. Men especially suffer from a lot of tan and dandruff issues and women too.

  • To remove tan, take a slice of tomato and rub it all over the tanned area for 2 to 3 mins, keep it for another 5 mins and then wash it off. Another remedy is to take a dollop of home-made curd and add Haldi paste to it. Mix the 2 ingredients really well and apply it all over the tanned area and leave it on for 10 – 15 mins and then wash it off. These 2 remedies effectively remove tan with no side effects to worry about; however, do a patch test in the skin behind your ears before using them fully. For dandruff, mix a few drops of lemon (provided you are not allergic to it) with coconut oil and heat the mixture. Then massage the warm oil mixture all over your scalp and leave it for 2 hours. Then wash your hair with a mild shampoo. You need to do these 3 to 4 times to get rid of dandruff completely. Other than these essentials, go for a thorough skin care routine consisting of cleansing, scrubbing, masking, toning, serums and moisturizing. Correct me people if my sequence is wrong, I’m not a beauty blogger. This is a perfect time to take care of your cracked heels, dry hands, body polishing etc.
  • Enrol yourself in online platforms such as Udemy and Coursera and get a thorough knowledge of the technologies and skills that are driving the World now and are very essential to get a good job. As per my knowledge, you can do courses on Analytics, Quality Control, Big Data, Machine Learning, Python, Six Sigma, Accountancy Basics, Corporate Finance, Supply Chain and Logistics, SAP, Java, Business Report writing, Communication skills or can be anything under the Sun that might boost your growth. You may also start preparing for any competitive exams that you are planning to take and gain an edge over your peers.

  • Read books and lose yourself in them! Books are man’s best friend! Take out those novels, self-help guides, Classics which you had bought with a lot of enthusiasm but never got time to read them. No more excuses now!
  • This is the best time to stop and reflect, to wait and think, to rewind and replay your life, to think about the mistakes you have made, the lessons learnt and what you want from life. Hence, write down your goals, one short term and another long term and plan accordingly. Especially, financial planning would require some amount of research or you can also get in touch with your Investment assistant. Decide on how much you want to invest, your risk appetite, the debt-equity proportion you are interested to invest in and the financial instruments you are interested. This is a good time for a long term investment in Mutual Funds, Gold and other precious metals but risky for short term investments. But a prudent and calculated measure will take your finances a long way.

  • If you are a student, this is a great time to do some work from home internships or jobs on content writing or any subject you want which will not only give you some industry exposure, but also give you some money along with a certificate that you can show in your cv when you go for a real job interview.

So that’s all about how I suggest you do to spend a quality quarantine! Let me know how you are spending your isolation days in the comment section below! TIA.
