Friendship defying Cancer

0

I am Gauri Kapur from Sonepat Haryana and I got diagnosed with Brain Cancer in 2016. In this specific time who helped me the most is My best friend Supriya Singh who lives in Kolkata. I can never ever return what she has done for me. Supriya is an inspiration, the role she played is the most difficult and inspiring.

I laughed through the night on which I was diagnosed with brain Cancer. Instead to plunging to grief, I was giggling and laughing histerically. To be honest with you, first, I was scared. I also went to the extent of shedding copious amount of tears, flushing my cheek red. It is not easy to suddenly stand on the verge of a cliff and watch down the ends of it, with nowhere to go but to jump. even in that hour grief, there was a hand that held mine and pulled me from being slurped in the melancholy. It is but, because of Supriya’s presence, that the worst days of my life turned to gold.

I had suddenly become an alien. I remember my doctor suggesting me to join Cancer groups to get connected with more people who were suffering like I was. Because, probably he felt they would understand my pain better and I sincerely tried, finally coming to a realisation that people do not die of Cancer; they die due to lack of love.

We die with the world’s question tags for the span of our lives. For begining to look as thin as protruding bones, and hence by becoming a social outcast. It took Supriya to understand what I was going through and treat me in the way I best healed. Supriya showed that Cancer was not just mine it was hers too. Even when my body was failing me, I knew in hers I was thriving well.

Sometimes we just want to live because of something. And Supriya became my someone to try to wake up each day and live like a miracle.

We met online and became best of friends. that was two years back, and since then Supriya is pillar of my strength. I have not seen nor talked to her in person but still the way she etched to me made my entire life blessed.

I am fighting for my life. A warrior, I declare myself and also to Supriya, who fights no less along with me. All the survival stories that we hear are greatest battles won and we need to celebrate those heroes who fight with the curtains drawn upon themselves, like Supriya fights with me.

Supriya did numerous things for me and out of them the most special was writing these poems for me which I thought best to share with you, for if you ever come across someone like me, you know that love can transform worst into best.

Poems

I saw your picture and I smiled with pride. I mean just look at her.

How can she look so damn pretty, her hair so smooth and the twinkle in her eyes.

The pink of her lips curves beautifully in smile.

You must have been happy then, you look soo young, rejuvenated, like spring at its infancy.

How can you be best at everything? The elegance you use while you sit, The way you hold your head high.

You were so different then. You didn’t care of the world. You were the spark of a lover’s heart.

And you played upon the chords attached to the nerve closest to my heart.

I am sad to note. where have your splendour gone? Why has it all converged to your smile?

Ahh, that smile which smiles with gloom engulfed. I so miss your vigour, Your words of official pride.

But it’s weird that I have you all to myself. With all your pains and pleasures.

With your reasons to smile or cry. with your cancer stories.

I am there to notice the hoarse in your voice. There to feel the pain in your head.

I wish people could see like me. You are not the malignant cell in your head.

You are not even the blood you spit. You are not your visits to a doctor. You aren’t your decreasing weight.

You are that girl who danced her heart out, who sang in the voice notes.

Who fought for a social cause. Who bravely bore stares in the park.

You can still hold your head high. because it belongs there.

You can still scorn the world. who think you cannot.

Win The World

We laughed it off. As if it were the germ in the trachea. Sneeze for three days and it would be gone.

Words don’t seem to bring the experience with them. Do they?

The first time I heard- CANCER, I remember what I had thought “Cancer!? Come I know she would kick your ass and send you where ever you came from!”

And we actually laughed. So hard that I dropped my phone on my face.

The word cancer never appeared so grave then.

Or maybe I didn’t understand then that mortals were not afraid of this word for no apparent reason.

It was only when she told me how it actually feels to live with the disease that I realised the pain that comes with it.

How would it feel when I don’t want to wake up to the skull cracking pain in my head which leaves red marks on my forehead, but I have to.

No medicine or painkiller I take would ever cure the throbbing ache.

What if its a battle every day to drink tea, for what comes next is a spat of blood in the sink.

Sometimes she wakes up with swollen gums and swollen face. Scared to look into the mirror for her own face looks unfamiliar.

With her bones cracking without any injury.

I realised Cancer was not that small as I had imagined.

It took some time for me to sink in. To gauge the limits of it.

I so wanted to squeeze out the hurts and pain from her body.

The way it is giving way day by day actually scared me. I wanted to make her laugh at those silly silly jokes.

It made me sad. It actually hurts to see the people you love suffer and you know there is no medicine to cure her of the pain.

It is then she said, “It doesn’t hurt that much!” How much more could she have loved me to say even Cancer in her brain didn’t hurt.

How could she balm my hurts? The way she innocently conceded to my wishes of her waking up early, without complaints,

Without letting me be aware of the sleepless tormenting nights.

The way she drank 1 litre of water. (yes it is a big deal because she hardly can take a sip in a day).

It reminded me of the famous tale from Mahabharata, the larger we think our problem is, the stronger grasp it has upon ourselves.

I decided it wasn’t that big to define her identity.

And I was not that strong even to feel sorry for her. She wasn’t just the cancer patient.

She was not someone to be pitied upon by a passerby or the visiting aunts.

She was a fighter, a swordless fighter. She dared live a life and love it with all her might.

Why do you see her like that? As if she were going to die.

Who wants your pity anyway? You talk about her as if you grew her up.

It really doesn’t hurt your heart. does it? You return to your homes, brand her the petty creature and sleep in contentment,

Measuring the kindness you still have in your heart.

And here sitting miles away I contemplate on the irony of life.

You pitied someone who plunges herself out of life everytime she wakes up.

Who like a queen holds onto her life and struggles hard to make an identity different from being just a person fighting cancer.

Look yourself in the mirror, the way you look at her. I am sure you are not gonna like it anyway.”

0
oral

Oral cancer or mouth cancer is a type of head and neck cancer that can happen anywhere in the mouth. From developing on the surface of the lips to the salivary glands, and tonsils, oral cancer can occur anywhere.

Early oral cancers commonly present as:

  1. A non-healing sore in the mouth, despite adequate medication.
  2. Loose tooth or bleeding gums
  3. Painful swallowing or persistent ear ache
  4. Recent onset difficulty or pain during mouth opening or protrusion of tongue.
  5. Visible neck swellings.

These symptoms are usually overlooked and present later as advanced cancers.

Like any other cancer, if not treated on time, oral cancer can also be life threatening.

Below are the factors that are known to increase the risk of the developing oral cancer.

General Factors

  1. Gender: Oral cancer is more common in males than in females. Use of tobacco and alcohol is seen significantly higher in men, thus increasing the risk factor for males. However, the gender factor is gradually declining as more women are indulging in tobacco and alcohol intake.
  2. Age: Oral cancer can occur at any age; however, those falling under the age bracket of 31-40 with an excessive alcohol and tobacco use are at an increased risk.
  3. Ultraviolet light: Lip cancer is more common among individuals who primarily work outdoors as well as individuals who are exposed to sunlight for a prolonged period.

Genetic Factors

  1. Genetic syndromes: Certain inherited genetic mutations can lead to different syndromes in the body which increases the risk of oral cancer. These include:
  • Fanconi anaemia: This is a blood condition, which is caused by inherited abnormalities in numerous genes. Difficulties can start at an early age and often lead to aplastic anaemia or leukaemia. The danger of oral cancer among individuals with Fanconi anaemia is approximately 500 times greater than the general population.
  • Dyskeratosis congenita: It is a genetically linked syndrome which can also cause aplastic anaemia. It carries a higher risk of throat and mouth cancer developing at an early age.

Lifestyle Factors

  1. Tobacco use: The chances of developing oral cancer depends on the frequency as well as the duration of tobacco use. Smoking can cause cancer in the mouth or throat, and tobacco products are related to cancer in the inner surface of lips, cheeks, and gums. About 80% of oral cancers are related to tobacco use in one form or the other.
  2. Alcohol: Approximately 70% of individuals diagnosed with oral cancer drink alcohol on a regular basis. For individuals who drink and smoke heavily, the chances of oral cancer may be as high as 100% more than the risk for individuals who do not indulge in these activities.

Other Factors

  1. HPV: Cancers that are related to human papillomavirus (HPV) are usually found in the tonsils, at the back of the throat, and the base of the tongue.
  2. Some other risk factors like excessive exposure to radiation, prevalence of neck and head cancer.

Minimizing your risks

Cancers of the mouth are one of the most curable types. Sadly 3/4th of oral cancer patients present to oncologists in advanced stages.  The most crucial thing one can do to prevent oral cancer is to never indulge in alcohol, smoking and chewing tobacco.

The risk can also be reduced by:

  • Reducing the exposure to the sun and wearing a lip balm with a good SPF
  • Eating a balanced diet consisting of fruits and vegetables
  • Avoiding alcohol and smoking
  • Removing the dentures at night and keeping them clean
  • Identifying and eliminating any cause of chronic or persisting irritation to mouth for eg. Sharp tooth, repeated cheek bites, or even keeping supari or tobacco squid at a position in mouth.

While it is impossible to fully cure oral cancer, following the above steps can help minimise the chances. Also, getting cancer treatment from one of the hospitals like Max Healthcare, which offers the best cancer treatment in Delhi, can ensure a speedy recovery. Visiting the dentist at regular intervals helps to guarantee that any symptoms of oral cancer are recognised as early as possible.

He was a prolific composer and highly influential in the development of the classical music tradition. Tyagaraja and his contemporaries Syama Sastri and Muthuswami Dikshitar were regarded as the Trinity of modern Carnatic music. Tyagaraja composed thousands of devotional compositions, most in Telugu and in praise of Lord Rama, many of which remain popular even today and sung at the Thyagaraja Aradhanotsavam every year.

THE CULTURE OF THE FESTIVAL

When Saint Thyagaraja passed on, his mortal remains were buried on the banks of the river Kaveri and a small memorial was built at the site. His disciples returned to their respective villages and observed his death anniversary at their own homes. The memorial soon fell into neglect and had become quite dilapidated by 1903, when two of the last surviving students to have been taught by Tyagaraja happened to make a nostalgic visit to the site. These were the elderly and eminent musicians Umayalpuram Krishna Bhagavatar and Sundara Bhagavatar. They were dismayed by the neglect and dilapidation; indeed, they had to search for the memorial in the wild foliage of the riverbank. They arranged for the renovation of the samadhi and decided to commemorate the tithi or death anniversary of their guru every year at the Samadhi itself.
In fact, until 1907, there were no music concerts but only religious rituals, during the aradhana. In 1908, it was Narasimha Bhagavatar and his younger brother Panchu Bhagavatar, disciples of Thillaisthanam Rama Iyengar (‘antharanga sishya’ of saint Thyagaraja) who held a five-day aradhana festival that included harikathas and concerts. The music concerts are now presided over by Sri Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha based in Thiruvaiyaru. The religious part of the Vaidika aradhana celebrations that began during the time of Thillaisthanam Rama Iyengar is continued even today by a Trust called ‘Sadguru Tyagabrahma Aradhana Kainkarya Trust, Madras,’ formed in 1984 by Chellam Iyer, S. Parthasarathy and a few others of the Thillaisthanam tradition. Thiruvaiyaru is situated 13kms from Thanjavur (Tanjore) in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Thyagaraja Aradhanotsavam-The Musical FestThis picture depicts the trust and divinity of people towards Saint Thyagaraja. Many people perform many such activities to seek the blessings of the saint, so that they could get the holy showers of the Almighty as well. This is the live picture of the music enthusiasts who had performed a “Nagara Sankeerthanam” on the eve of the saint’s death anniversary.

THE PANCHARATNAMS

Where ever may the Thyagaraja Aradhanotsavam be held, the main motive of this fest is to protect the great compositions of Thyagaraja and share it with the future generations. The Pancharatna Kritis sung at the fest are:

  1. Jagadananda Karaka – Ragam Natai
  2. Duduku gala – Ragam Goula
  3. Sadhinchane – Ragam Arabhi
  4. Kanakana Ruchira – Ragam Varali
  5. Endaro Mahanubhavulu – Shree Ragam

The melodic forms of these compositions (Nata, Goula, Arabhi, Varali, Sri) are the five Ghana ragas of Carnatic music also called the ghanapanchaka. These 5 ragas lend themselves to elaborate improvisations. They are so called because they are suited for playing tanam on the veena. Nata and Varali are the most ancient of the Carnatic ragas and date back to over a thousand years ago.

Today, thousands of people from all over the world attend this great musical festival to commemorate the Great saint and get lost in the divinity of music. The sacred sounds ringing around the area make the area pleasant and hence satisfy the music lovers.

Thousands upon thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this ‘World’s Biggest Food Fight’ where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.Prior to 2013 anywhere from 40,000 to 50,000 (reported to be 50,000 in 2012) people crammed into this huge tomato fight, greatly expanding Bunol’s normal 9,000 person population. Since 2013 official ticketing has been in place limiting the number of participants to just 20,000 lucky people.

At around 11am many trucks haul the bounty of tomatoes into the centre of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes come from Extremadura, where they are less expensive. Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a two-story high, greased-up wooden pole and reached the coveted ham at the top. In practice this process takes a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the meaty prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for himself.

After an one hour the fighting ends. At this point, no more tomatoes can be thrown. The cleaning process involves the use of fire trucks to spray down the streets, with water provided from a Roman aqueduct. The authorities seem more concerned with cleaning the town than cleaning the visitors, so some people find water at the Bunol River to wash themselves, although some kind residents will hose passers-by down. Once the tomato pulp is flushed, the ground is clean due to the acidity of the tomato.

If you plan to visit Spain, then do visit Bunol at the time of the La Tomatina Festival and experience it !
