Review of the movie Lion

0

There is a scene in the flick “Lion”, the drama which is oscar nominated and starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman as protagonists, that stands out more than others. It is that  scene where Saroo, a boy who is just five-year old gets separated from his parents and finds himself alone at Calcutta Railway Terminus, which is nearly a thousand miles away from his home. Shunted by strangers who have no time and patience to hear him out, he goes up on a pole in a hope to spot a known face in the crowd. The furthur sight that awaits him and viewrs is frightening. For as far as is the limit of little boy’s eye can reach , he sees only swarm of busy commuters, a jungle of unknown adults. The visual depiction of that knee-high child lost in the big bad world is overwhelming. It is in that very moment that the hard-hitting reality of his situation truly becomes evident at viewr’s senses.

The movie, as you may know, is made on the true story of Saroo Brierley, who was adopted by a  couple in abroad after he got lost and became estranged from his parents and his home in a  village in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

The protagonist Dev Patel who played the grown up Saroo, is  truely affecting in his  performance. In fact, it is Dev Patel’s most mature and heart-touching performance. In the age of late twenties, Saroo becomes obsessed with finding his real family, and the portions which depict  the internal unease he is grappling with are very effectively delivered by by the actor.

But to be true, Dev Patel and everyone else in the movie including  Nicole Kidman as Saroo’s adoptive mother and Rooney Mara as his loving and supporting girlfriend  are totally eclipsed by Sunny Pawar, the small child who portrayed the young Saroo. He’s a real find, and it  breaks your heart to see him go through those horrific experiences when he’s first lost on the streets of Calcutta.

The in between part of the movie certainly feels a little bit boring, mainly due to Saroo’s obsessive search  using Google Earth  to find the one station out of myriad ones in India that will match with a childhood memory he has in his brain. It is a experience which is fascinating and intriguing.

Watching this film with a soft heart and sensitive brain of  an Indian,   there are bound to be few things that will tear you in agony . Uncomfortable truths that are heart-wrenching, the depiction of apathy towards the poor, the ugly reality of child abuse, and that of ‘white saviour’ element to the story are some of them. But  director Garth Davis’ is accolade worthy as even in its weakest of moments the film seldom feels gratuitous. Unlike so many films of foreign which are set in India.

The thing that doesn’t hold back on is wringing every available drop of emotion from the big pay-off in the end. As it is a true story one knows where things are reaching, but in no way does that lessen the impact of this film. Do not miss it.

What is going on with Deepika Padukone after XXX-The return of Xander Cage, her upcoming movie and a lot more!

0

Q) Does she feel XXX-The return of Xander cage did what it meant to do for her?

A) Deepika feels that this movie did more for her than she expected. It not only gave her exposure of the world as an actress, but also gave her exposure to plethora of different ways of film-making process.

Q) What does she think of inevitable comparisons with Priyanka Chopra?

A) To this Deepika says that she personally does not even think of it It is just unfair to compare her and Priyanka. She even says comparing actress like Anushka and Sonam at one point is ok because they are all headed to same directions and goals in terms of Bollywood. But as she knows Priyanka so deeply on personal level, so she knows Priyanka has entiry different career aim from Deepika, despite both of them being doing things in creative space. Comparing both of them is just a bizzare act for Deepika.

Q) Priyanka seems to have given much commitment to western world, on the other hand Deepika said that she does not want to go and get settled in the west. Her comments?

A) To this question Deepika says that doing a televised show needs more demand of a person’s commitment than a movie. As movies does not have series of serials like televised shows. She also says that this is the time when communication and transportation is lot more easy ,so,for doing stuffs like Hollywood movies does not need one to stay in the West or any sort of physical move.

Q) So was Deepika’s experience got her excited enough to take on another project in the West?

A) “Absolutey yes” is her response for this question. Furthur, she does not take the projects of the West as the new career. She takes it as a new challenge of the journey in which she has already invested so much in her home country.

Q) So, has she found some work which is interesting enough for her to take it on?

A) Yes she has found interesting script both in India and Internationally, but there is no official nod for them.

Q) As she had been away from India for a whole year, is she anxious about her next release i.e. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s flick Padmavati?

A7) She said that she does not look her career as a gane of chess. She also said that she did not think about it once because she dies not think being away for one year is going to affect her next release at all.

Q) Recently there was an incident at the sets of “Padmavati” where some people vandalized the sets, wes she in touch with her director after this mishap?

A) She says that there is no person on earth who is more passionate than Sanjay Leela Bhansali when it comes to movies. She also says that he is a kind of person who will mould this incident in some way or the other and would use it to the advantage of the film.

We wish her all the best for her upcoming movie “Padmavati”

Movie Riview of Rangoon

0

Vishal Bhardwaj works diligently hard to pull off his most ambitious film called “Rangoon”. The director portrays evidently bold love triangle against the backdrop of  freedom struggle of India, but the flick is layered with all delicious dialogue, stupid nods and lilting music that one has come to link with his cinematic world. The film is treat for the eyes  to look at which is supported and greatly powered by excellent lensing by Pankaj Kumar, alongwith clutch of Broadway-style music tracks, and  pitch-perfect locations which serve as a fitting landscape locations for the story to unfold. Problem is is that the plot of the flick in itself is deep and dense and is also overcrowded with many storylines. The initial hour is pure set-up, and it’s set at a leaden rate. What thankfully we get is compelling protagonists in Julia, a courageous  action heroine who is the mistress of a leading producer Russi Billimoria, who once himself was a star but went away from  the arclights after a mishap which happened as an  accident. After that,  we have another man in fatigues, Jamadar Nawab Malik, who is a soldier in the Indian army in the movie whom Julia falls head-over-heels for when he gets  assigned as her military escort on her visit to the India-Burma border to. As this is  Vishal Bhardwaj’s flick, there is more to the characters mentioned, than what is evidently visible on the surface. Julia played by gorgeous Kangana Ranaut is a swashbuckling femme fatale, but is putty in the hands of her mentor. Russi played by Saif Ali Khan, who portrays a British sympathiser,  expresses  affection and love for Julia, but never for a moment he lets her forget that he wholly owns her, as he has ‘bought’ her from her mother at the tender age of 14 for nearly thousand bucks. Nawab played by Shahid Kapoor is showed hiding dangerous secrets of his own that must be immensely guarded. All three actors playing these tough roles are in particularly nice form. Saif Ali Khan imbues Russi with the swagger and the arrogance of an aristocrat from the age and time forties. Shahid Kapoor plays the  patriot with fabulous matured performance, and his understated approach to the part is a fun to watch. But the real pleasure and a scene stealer is Kangana in the role of Julia, as being woman who loves as deeply and fiercely as she argues. For evidence of her incredible performance range just look how she goes from comic and playful to densely emotional in that terrific pre-intermission  scene in which she is drunk in the mud with Shahid.

It is  difficult to take your eyes off her each time she comes on the screen. Her appearance is just rocking. But Rangoon is long more that it should be, and indulgent to the point of butt-numbness. The writing is little clunky, specially  the overwrought climax on a suspension bridge between Burma and India. .As the end appriaches, the film is neither wholly satisfying as a compelling romance, nor as a stirring  drama of patriotism about the portrayal of the Indian National Army in India’s freedom struggle. The director makes an attempt in very ambitious manner to deliver a  epic and there us enough to enjoy. You might want to give it a chance!

Things You know if you live in Delhi

0

Delhi, a place where all your dreams come true, where people unite, which is called ‘Dilwalo ki Dilli’ [where people have the biggest of hearts], which is crazy and yet subtle, matures where you’ll learn to be independent and love yourself if not anything else. Its nature of all the places and yet forever young! No words are enough to ever describe Delhi. It’s magical, it’s trouble!

We, Delhiites know our city inside out. We know it’s not perfect and there are many more places better and cleaner and more developed. But deep inside, we know there’s no place like Delhi. After all, it’s home, sweet home! Here are some things only people who’ve been in Delhi would know:

  1. What’s heaven on earth? Metro! Obviously! (Not Delhi, lol)

In the summer, amidst the boiling city, our only relief is the God gifted Metro (not really God gifted, though). One, we only get out of our AC rooms if it’s urgent, that too if there’s no conveyance available, our only option is metro! ‘Auto rickshaw?’ What’s that?

  1. All the Delhiites have magical wardrobes, and no it’s not Narnia!

From Forever 21 to Sarojini Market’s street shopping, your wardrobes are full of magical stuff. Clothes, accessories, shoes, heels, all kinds of makeup, bags, 20 varieties of scarves, and what not? And no, you are not that rich. It’s just you know where to shop.

  1. “Heard about Paranthe wali Gali?” “No?” “Right, you’re not from Delhi!”

You’re a crazy foodie. Even if you like your diet chart and being skinny, you know the way to parents wali Gali and the famous kachori wali in Civil lines, and all such food joints. It’s called perk of living in Delhi. Sundar, sasta, tikaao! [Pretty cheap, useful and lasts long.]

  1. *In a problem* No worries when I have friends from Delhi.

You’ve been in troubles since forever, you know how to handle them so well by now.  Your friends always call you when it comes to problems! Though you crib about it, you secretly love it. You feel like a boss.

  1. NORTH CAMPUS, forever.

No matter which part of Delhi you stay in, you know all the streets and shops of Kamla Nagar, and love it. You don’t mind the chaos or the dirt. You hang out there like your second home. Well, that’s what it is. Na?

  1. “Have you faced the struggle in life?” “Duh, I stay in Delhi!”

You know what actual struggle is. Be it for money, for food, for alcohol, anything. You’ve seen days when you struggled to even survive in Delhi. That doesn’t lower your love for Delhi anyhow.

  1. Jugaad[makeshift], for everything.

Because that’s your answer to everything. ‘Juggaaaad!’ That’s one thing you’ve learned for sure staying in Delhi, arranging anything at any time. “Samosa chai at 3?” “Chalo!”

  1. Life is a race! Compete or die.

You totally connect with this dialogue from the movie ‘3 idiots’! Delhi is a bitch that way! Academics, Media, even for a metro seat, competition is omnipresent.

  1. Safety is the best policy!

Being in Delhi has made you so conscious, you’re aware even in your sleep. “You’re a girl, you aren’t supposed to go out late at night!” You have heard this phrase a million times. But you know how to take care of yourself at the end of the day.

  1. Modern and Ethical! “Are you kidding me?”

You’re the perfect combination of heritage values and modern ideology. You aren’t the typical conservative mind, but advanced enough to compete with the world. Woah!

Riview of Jolly LLB 2

0

Jolly  LLB 2 is a story of a man named Jagdeesh Mishra also known as  Jolly who is originally from Kanpur but his life takes him to Lucknow. The movie shows him grappling with himself and other people in order to be taken seriously as a lawyer, but his superior pays him that much attention as one would give to the bubble gum stucked under one’s shoes. Like one feels the presence of annoying gum under one’s shoes but does not at all wants to touch it, same becomes the case of “Jolly”.  He tries various methods to make little more money on side and his main goal seems to get one good lawyer chamber for himself. In order to achieve so, his methods lead him to terrible and horrific incident. By this time his entire energy and aim become focussed to right this wrong and he becomes so obsessed with it that he seemed to be ready to go against the system for doing so. Story is predictable but from here onwards it becomes twisted and keeps its audience hooked. What incredible and in favourr of the movie is stupendous performances of the actors, especially that of protagonist Akshay Kumar who took only thirty days to get this film completed! Moving from comic to dejected to confused without loosing the grip on viewers in courtroom scenes is another standout of the film. Anu Kapoor pulls of his character of ruthless and corrupt lawyer with full dedication. In some of the scenes he sunk so much in the character that he made people forget that they are watching a movie and the portrayal is just an act. He is ready to go to any length to get the outcome in favour of his clients as they offer him hefty bribes. Although rest of the cast is serviceable, Kumud Mishra as a corrupt police officer once again impresses us with his incredible performance. Huma Khureshi has a considerable presence but we wish her part would have been written in a better manner, to some extent she suffers on the account of flaws in the script.  Saurabh Shukla does exactly what he did in first part as a Justice but here he is dancing at “gulaboo” because of Alia Bhatt fondness that he has in the flick. Comparing it with the first part, we were hooked to the first part because it was a sitirical eassay on the social issues because of contaminated and corrupt practices in our country and the repeatation of the same portrayal at some places in Jolly LLB 2 makes this movie loose its novelty. Akshay Kumar too fights here like Arshad Warsi did in first part, but to glorify hos character Akshay’s part has been exaggerated by making him fight terrorism and portraying him running in Kashmir. The movie keeps viewers engaged but it also makes us miss the rawness of first part. But having said that, the movie is good and worth a watch!

Not everyone can afford a toilet and make Swach Bharat

0
Prime Minister started swach bharat abhiyan in 2014

Mohammed Shabbeer is a construction worker. He lives with his family of six in a tent, under the flyover in Vasant Kunj area of New Delhi. He shares this small area with over 150 people. The space they live on, can be hardly called a house It is more like pieces of old clothes wrapped around grills. The area is divided into small quarters with walls made of torn up clothes.

The area under the bridge where Mohammed Shabeer’s family lives

There is no bedroom, no kitchen and there are no toilets. All the men go to the nearest garbage site to relieve themselves in the morning And all the women to the nearest “sulabh shauchalya(Public toilet). They need to pay Rs. 2 every morning to use the toilet and Rs.10 to use bathroom .If they want to wash clothes, another  Rs. 10  note need to be paid. Children use divider on the roads to defecate.”I’m living here for 35 years and It has always been this way.Because we can’t afford to pay ever day for using a toilet. We can only afford to pay for our wives and daughters .Why to blame the government when even god has abandoned us.”Says shabbier. When asked if he blames government for this.

All the men in this population of 150 are either construction workers or hawkers. With average income ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 400 a day, only if they get work.In such a situation either they can pay for food or for toilets. The thing which is most basic requirement for other Delhites,is a luxury for people like shabbeer. On one side there is Prime Minister’s ambitious scheme Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, which says “Jahan soch vaha shauchalya”.And aims to make India open-defecation free by 2019.On the other side there is this part of urban India, which hardly has access to toilets.

A public toilet ,which poor can’t afford

The government is putting emphasis on the importance of construction of toilets in rural India. But there is not much thought given ,on how to make toilets affordable for urban population.Which is not capable to build individual toilet.Or has no land to get one constructed by the government. When you don’t own land ,you can’t possibly get a toilet. All the slum dwellers and people like shabbeer are compelled to use the community toilets. Which are not really clean and hygienic and if they are clean, not everyone can afford to pay, for using them.

In such situation, they are left with no choice but to defecate in open.Government claims that it has achieved construction of 1,14,221 community toilets in various cities. And there are 511 cities which are 100% open-defecation free. But the government’s claim still needs to be examined.Since, reality does not consolidate the data provided by the government. There is certainly much more which needs to be done to achieve 100%.
