Top 8 Books to Gift to Teenagers

0

If you have to name a friend who’ll always stay by your side, never betray you, or never let you down, the first name that comes to the mind is a book. A book can take you to places that are far away, often fictional; a book can school you in the socio-cultural and political issues around you; a book can help you relax after a long day: the perks of books are innumerable.

A lot of young people, however, are missing on the amazing experience that books can offer. The reasons are multiple, and often not even their fault: a busy schedule that leaves them tired and burdened; the unquenchable thirst of scrolling through social media “just a little more”; the problem of judging books by popularity or by their cover; the inability to concentrate and complete a book; and so on. By the time one hits their twenties, it seems the scope of reading books becomes as bleak as a rising sun on the west. The saddest part is, books can greatly help unwind, relax, and lower stress, but most youngsters miss on it.

To help with this dire condition, one can start inculcating a reading habit from the teenage. It is best to start off by gifting the teens with books that are best for them. Something that will catch their attention, keep them hooked, and won’t complicate their thought process too much. Here are 10 books that you can gift a teenager you know, be it your child, a friend, or an acquaintance.

The Harry Potter Series
by J.K. Rowling

Image result for person reading harry potter book

This is a book readers of any age can appreciate, but it’s one of the best books for teenagers to start off their reading habit with. The language is simple yet mesmerising, and often teachers recommend reading Harry Potter books so that students can write better quality of English. The story is relatable to anyone who has been to school and the teenage tantrums remain the same as any teenager all across the world. Tracing the most vital teenage years of its lead characters, the book becomes a favourite for the readers of this age. The seven-book series has excitement, resolution of the crisis, an exciting aura of adventure, combined with more intrinsic ideas of psychological approach, complicated characters that resemble real-life humans, and deeper meanings of the various names/terms used that the reader would eventually understand as they grow up.

In brief, a notorious wizard by the name of Voldemort tried to kill an infant named Harry Potter, but by some mysterious turn of events, finds himself defeated and left in shambles, too weak to carry out his demonizing ideas. The baby gets a scar, and loses his parents, left to grow up with his abusive uncle and aunt. On turning 11, he finds his way into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, a school of magic hidden deep in the hearts of England. Soon he makes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and explores a variety of events, mostly trying to escape the efforts a weak Voldemort keeps making to come back in his real form and kill Harry. Rowling has cleverly crafted the whole series, weaving an ingenious web of multiple subplots and an intriguing main plot. Once the reader grows up, they realise that these fictional characters are actually real people around us.

For starters, Harry Potter can be a good read as it isn’t too long (the first few books) and once hooked, it can sort the booklist for a considerable amount of time. Throughout the world, it is considered as one of the most favourite books by both young people and adults. The book does not use explicit language or descriptions either, making it an ideal gift for the teen.

The Da Vinci Code
by Dan Brown

Related image

Looking for an absolute magnet for your mind? The Da Vinci Code remains one of the best thrillers to start off the reading habit with for teenagers. Riddled with mind-boggling codes and a crisis that peaks with no hope for resolution, finally ending in a twist unforeseen, The Da Vinci Code can be a treat for teenagers who like flavours that come twisted and with a tinge of brilliance. The generous use of historical facts and convincing plotline, Dan Brown creates the illusion that the book is not a work of fiction, rather a representation of the dark truth masked as a tale to pass it off as a fictitious read.

It is set in Paris, and begins with Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, a character we had previously seen in Dan Brown’s first book, Angels and Demons. He is stuck in a chase with French cryptologist Sophie Neveu after the elderly curator of Louvre, Jacques Saunière is murdered on the evening he was supposed to meet Langdon. His body was in a brutal position, and invisible messages were sprawled across the museum’s section where his body was found. Langdon and Sophie go on a journey to unearth Saunière’s final message and stumbles upon one of history’s best-kept secrets: The Priory of Sion. Boating of members like Isaac Newton, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Victor Hugo, this secret organisation has helped protect one of the most important historical facts which could upturn the world if revealed. Trying to break a cryptic code styled in the ways of Da Vinci, the two find themselves in jeopardy, running for their lives.

The reader will find themselves running in the chase with Langdon and Sophie, encountering parallel narration, bogged by seemingly unexplainable riddles, and being on a journey that is no less than a treasure hunt. It is especially a great read for teenagers as the book, though contains a complex plot, is presented in lucid and simple language, explained in easy terms, and facts broken down for better understanding. For any teen who wants to read anything beyond romance and mainstream narration, this would be a great treat.

The Percy Jackson Series
by Rick Riordan

Image result for person reading percy jackson book

For the nerds out there who can’t get enough of the Classical myths, and feel perturbed by all the seriousness of these old tales, Rick Riordan has the perfect blend: teen troubles, drama, humour, adventure; one gets all of it in a subtle combination, perfect for teenage readers. It is a light read, not too serious, but having all the elements a teenager would relate with.

The story narrates in first person the story of a boy named Percy Jackson, who finds himself different from others and often cannot fit in. In a series of crazy events, he discovers he is the son of Poseidon, the mighty god of seas and oceans. He goes to Camp Half-Blood over summer, where there is a hoard of activities as well as protection for the young demigods, as they are half-human and half-god, against scavenging monsters. However, he is not ordinary for a special reason and that sets in motion a lot of mess he has to fix. As the story advances, the ancient Titan Kronos arises to be his big challenge.

The Percy Jackson Series, like Harry Potter, has no description or word that is not family-friendly, thus making it a safe read for parents who are concerned. Moreover, it is one of those books that does not overdo its content, especially when it comes to romance or excitement. The read is smooth and enjoyable.

The Room on the Roof
by Ruskin Bond

Image result for reading room on the roof ruskin bond

The debut work of Ruskin Bond, The room on the Roof was written when the author was seventeen, thus portraying an almost ideal reflection of teenage emotions, doubled with a narrative that is rigged with the kind of detours every teenager dreams of taking at least once. The book’s excellence has been recognised time and again, having won the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize, and remains one of Bond’s most beloved works.

The book portrays Rusty, a sixteen-year-old Anglo-Indian orphan boy who is exasperated with his English guardians and runs away. Mrs Harrison wanted him to grow up as a pure Englishman, away from the Indian kids of the locality. When Rusty returns home all smeared with paint on the day of Holi, he is beaten up by his guardian, thus making him have a violent outburst, which is concluded with him leaving the house. Outside the strict four walls of the house, he sees the world bare in front of him, drawing a picture of the local Dehra scene, from the Indian bazaar to local festivals. He goes to his Indian friend, Somi, the likes of whom Mr Harrison considered dirty. Being set right after the British left India, this emotion is explained, besides Rusty’s confusion, helplessness, loneliness and sadness: the emotions a teenager feels universal. His independence changes him, and he lands the job as a tutor for Kishen, with whose family he starts living. He finds his first love in Kishen’s mother, Meena. The story is more of an exploration of the character of Rusty, beautifully followed by a deft Ruskin Bond.

This book is different and presents a relatable yet unique way of portraying a teenager. The language being easy, it makes a great read for the young teens. Its autobiographical narrative absorbs the reader. And maybe the most important aspect of this book is its conciseness. It makes a great gift for a reader who likes their delicacies a little different from the mainstream.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
by John Boyne

Regarded as one of the most touching books, The Boy in Striped Pyjamas remains a memorable read for life, coming up in discussions very often, in classroom as well as beyond it. Sending a strong message, it shows in subtle innocent ways how the hatred sown by a group of power-hungry people can affect the ordinary civilians; that the hatred many consider normal and okay are actually socially ingrained in the minds, with no logical reasoning; that humans are united by love no matter how much society tries to divide.

Set against the context of World War II Germany, the main protagonists of the story is Bruno, a nine-year-old boy who moves with his family out of their home in Berlin after his father is promoted by ‘The Fury’, as he addresses Adolf Hitler. Even though he was sad about the fact that he has to leave his best friends and grandparents behind, Bruno has no choice. Here is portrayed a quarrel between his father and grandmother over the fact that the former would accept an offer by The Fury, showing that even though prejudices had their dominant place, there were sensible people indeed, who saw through all the smoke, as there were blind patriots of propaganda. At his new house, Bruno comes across a man waiting in their house, who, he discovers, used to be a doctor in his past life. Curious as to why a doctor would work as a waiter now. Bruno discovered this man came from the beyond the fence near their house, fenced and full of people wearing striped pyjamas. He could not pronounce the name of their new home, Auschwitz, and calls it ‘Out-With’.

Missing his old life of exploring around the house, Bruno takes a detour around their new house and comes across Shmuel, a boy of his age who lived on the other side of the fence. He wore the same striped pyjamas as everyone inside the fence and is very thin. The two form friendship that grows close and Bruno starts visiting Shmuel almost every day.  Shmuel tells Bruno that he was taken away from his home in Cracow, in Poland, and Bruno realises that the other side of the fence is Poland. A child, Bruno did not understand what life was like for Shmuel, but got him food when the latter asked him to. Life becomes more likeable for Bruno with Shmuel with him. But Bruno’s mother eventually convinces his father to move the family back to Berlin, saddening Bruno again. So he goes to bid his farewell to Shmuel and decides to wear the same striped pyjamas as Shmuel the next day to explore his side of the fence and search for his father whom he had not seen for several days.

Bruno moves to the other side passing under the fence, and though scared, tries to help Shmuel find his father. Both the children are then forced by soldiers into a dark room. And as the soldiers closed the room, the two boys held hands, and everything went dark. Bruno’s parents didn’t find him, but finding his clothes and boots in front of the fence, his father could guess what ill fate his son had come across, breaking him down completely.

The story is a tragic narrative that bares the harshest aspects of communal hatred and a complete disregard for humanism for this reason. While hunger for power drives powerful people to manipulate the masses, the innocents suffer. This book is good for teenagers as all these messages are conveyed in a very subtle and concise tone or style. And it is important that one learns these, teenage being the perfect age to start.

The Fault in Our Stars
by John Green

Image result for person reading fault in our stars pic

A modern romantic tragedy, The Fault in Our Stars is a beautiful read that leaves any teenager in tears yet happy. It is a simple narrative grounded in reality, striking a beautiful balance between what we aspire and what life throws at us in actual.

The story begins with Hazel Grace Lancaster, a sixteen-year-old girl with cancer for three years. She comes across Augustus ‘Gus’ Waters, a seventeen-year-old boy in remission after having being afflicted by a tumour in his leg and being amputated. The two, aware of how they are different from others, slowly fall in love in what any teenager crushing over their fantasy would relate to. The lovebirds do end up in a relationship on a trip to Amsterdam. The narrative starts going downhill with Gus’ suddenly deteriorating health. As he closes his eyes forever and leaves behind a shattered Hazel, one gets to ponder over the deep discussions the two had had and the thoughts that follow Hazel after Gus’ death. The small details make the reader minutely experience the tale.

1984
by George Orwell

Image result for person reading 1984 book pic

Geroge Orwell can perhaps be the best introduction to the world of politics for any teenager. As it is one has to aware and strong as one grows up, and Orwell with his metaphors, ideas and chilling similarities between the messed-up world in his book and the ordinary society. 1984 is set in a dystopian society in the future, the year 1984 (the book was written in around 1945).

Winston Smith finds himself going against the law in a stringent society constantly under surveillance, ruled by an unseen man addressed as ‘BIG BROTHER’. There is no concept of privacy, there is constant war, class distinction is prominent, the news and history strictly controlled to make sure the people are brainwashed into supporting the system and the government; anyone who says even one word against the system or goes even a jot against it vanishes, and everyone else starts pretending that the person did not exist. Reality is manipulated every day, and people forced into being blind of this manipulation. Winston sets off his journey to doom with buying a notebook, a crime against the government. The subsequent events, ending in a brainwashing session, leave Winston a changed man, and the reader deep in imploration.

Political awareness is a very important aspect of adult life that should be built slowly. One cannot have a bunch of political science books when they turn 18 and form a proper opinion overnight. 1984 does the job more easily and with more time, making it an ideal read for teenagers.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
by Stephen Chbosky

Image result for person reading perks of being a wallflower book

A romance that is not cheesy, not devoid of depth, exploring and happening, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of the best rom-com for teenagers. Starting off with the fifteen-year-old protagonist, Charlie. Quiet and withdrawn, he is eponymous of the “wallflower”. He keenly observes, ponders, quietly witnessing everything around him. He is portrayed dealing with the trauma of two deaths- of his best friend and his aunt. He finds solace in his high school English teacher, who sees through him, and Patrick and his stepsister Sam. Charlie falls in love with Sam, while Patrick reveals he is gay, in a closeted relation with Brad.

Charlie starts opening up slowly, but the vacations bring him difficulty, digging up memories of the death of Aunt Helen, plunging him into depression. But his friends help him, and soon he has the courage to confront his sister’s abusive boyfriend. He gets into a relationship with a girl named Mary Elizabeth but things do not work out; in a game of Truth or Dare Charlie kisses Sam as the prettiest girl in the room, and Mary Elizabeth leaves in anger. On another hand, Brad’s father discovers his relationship and sends him to rehab. On his return, he treats Patrick real bad, and Charlie breaks up the fight. A drunken Patrick then kisses Charlie, but Charlie understands what he might be going through.

With the approach of the ending of the year, Charlie gets nervous about leaving behind his friends. He has a romantic encounter with Sam, who was due to leave for college, but it brings back his repressed memories of Aunt Helen molesting him. The story ends with a letter where Charlie says he took therapy and overcame his childhood trauma and made peace with her dead aunt. The story touches on various aspects that teenagers do not just relate with, but also see around them and need to be aware of. Depression and childhood trauma can be found commonly and often go repressed; romance an experimental experience rigged with fear of society’s acceptance; loneliness a frequent friend. The book presents it all in an optimistic light, showing that none of us is alone and that our teenage problems are not unique or that we are not suffering alone. This book as a gift can be a great way of bonding with your teenage children or friends.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
by Roald Dahl

Any kid knows that the world isn’t full of good people only, and that the bad people are not always far from us lurking in dark corners. They are very much present among us. Some pose as our accomplices or are encourages in their actions. And what better to show this than portraying a group of rude, spoilt children? In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Dahl introduces kids with various negative traits, and how each is taught a lesson, along with their parents.

It is often not the fault of the children entirely for becoming what they are. parents have a huge role in shaping their personalities. Perhaps because Augustus Gloop’s mother was fine with her son being an obese kid with no control of eating, that he fell into the pool of chocolate despite being warned. Perhaps because Veruca Salt was given everything she demanded, that she could not take no for an answer. This list goes on for all the kids except Charlie, the poor boy from the broken hut who might be lacking a thick bank balance but not his politeness and good nature. The fact that he finally wins proves that no matter how harsh the world is, the good always wins. Also, him choosing his family over being the lone proprietor of the world’s biggest chocolate company shows that the material value of something is never more than the value of virtues.

This book is a perfect read not just because of its simplicity, but because of the subtlety with which Dahl manages to convey a deep message with multiple layers concerning human nature, politics, and life.

New Homeowners Guide: Maintenance and Repairs

0
Homeowners

When you are moving into your first house, you need to understand how to handle maintenance and repairs. Plus, you need to consider how you will save for emergencies, how you will manage your money, and how to best maintain the house. There are a few tips that will help you get ready to care for your home properly.

How Much Do You Need in Savings?

You should begin to build a savings account as soon as you can. When you start the savings account, it should build to six months of salary. Of course, you will need some time to build your savings account. Saving a little bit here and there makes it much easier for you to prepare for the future.

Plus, you should set goals that work within your monthly budget. Your monthly budget should account for a certain amount of money that goes into your savings account. Plus, you need to make sure that you have figured out how you can add to your savings account as you make more money. As you make more money, you want to put more money into savings to account for your growing salary.

Do You Need A Separate Emergency Fund?

You should create a separate emergency fund for your home if you can. The emergency fund can pay for things like regular services for the plumbing, HVAC units, and appliances. Plus, you should create an emergency account that can be used to pay for parts or repairs. Having this capital ready can allow you to respond quickly to urgent issues like faulty wiring or sudden outages. This financial cushion ensures that even complex electrical hazards are addressed by experts before they escalate into costly property damage. When these problems arise, choosing electricians with online booking can save you valuable time, ensuring you secure a professional service immediately without the hassle of back-and-forth phone calls. You can do some repairs on your own because you have extra money left over.

If you can create two separate accounts, it will be easier for you to manage your money. You will earn a bit of money if you build a savings account, and you will enjoy knowing that your savings accounts are growing. Anyone who is good with money makes money from their money. You should make sure that you have chosen a bank account that saves the most money possible. If you are not saving your money properly, the account will never grow.

How Important Is Routine Maintenance?

Routine maintenance is one of the most important parts of caring for your home. Yes, you need to keep your home clean, but you need to work with professionals who can provide regular maintenance for all your appliances. You can invite these technicians into your home every year, and they will let you know how you can best take care of your appliances.

Plus, routine maintenance helps you save money. A routine appointment will pay for very small repairs, and the technician will let you know if you need to pay for much larger repairs before the unit shuts down. You will extend the life of each device, and you will not need to worry about catastrophic repairs. The technician can tell you when the device is beginning to fail and you need a replacement.

What Do You Do During An Emergency?

When you move into a new house, you may find yourself juggling a variety of expenditures on top of a hefty mortgage payment. This makes it even more important to have an emergency fund in place should you face any unexpected damages that warrant immediate repair. If you haven’t had the time to build your emergency fund and you find yourself facing unexpected expenses, such as roof repairs following a windstorm, there may be options available. Research alternatives for short-term funding like borrowing from family, taking a home equity loan, or applying for payday loans from direct lenders.

Once you have managed your emergency, you can pay your account for the loan payments in your monthly budget. Plus, you should continue to save money in your emergency accounts so that you will have enough money to pay for the next emergency.

Conclusion

When you move into a new house, you need to make sure that you have planned for maintenance and repairs. You can schedule routine maintenance for the house, and you can start saving money in an emergency account. Most people who do this will have extra cash left over for an emergency repair, but you can get a loan online if the emergency is too big to pay off right away. All these tips ensure that your home is in the best possible condition.

How to prepare for a bone marrow transplant?

0

Bone marrow is a spongy and soft tissue situated inside your bones. They are responsible for generating blood stem cells. These stem cells further develop into RBC (Red Blood Cells) that transport oxygen throughout the body, platelets to prevent blood clotting, and the WBC (White Blood Cells) that combat infections. Bone marrow disease occurs in cases of:

  • Leukaemia or blood cancer, where the bone marrow generates the abnormal WBC
  • Aplastic Anaemia, a condition where the bone marrow fails to produce RBC
  • Myeloproliferative disorders caused due to excess production of WBC by the bone marrow
  • Lymphoma can spread its infection to bone marrow and adversely impact blood cell production.
  • Environmental and genetic factors also give rise to bone marrow diseases.

What is bone marrow transplant?

A Bone Marrow Transplant is a medical procedure that is performed for replacing the infected or damaged bone marrow. Bone marrow can be destroyed by complex chemotherapy or infected by a disease. Blood stem cells are transplanted in this process that produces healthy blood cells in the bone marrow and encourage growth in new marrow. Transplants are of two types; autologous transplant (usage of own stem cells) and allogeneic transplant (usage of stem cells from the donor)

Why is a Bone Marrow Transplant Done?

When a patient’s bone marrow is not healthy to function correctly, a bone marrow transplant is performed. Cancer treatments, chronic diseases, and infections can damage the healthy bone marrow. Some common causes of bone marrow transplants are:

  • Aplastic Anaemia
  • Leukaemia, multiple myeloma, lymphoma
  • Chemotherapy
  • Congenital neutropenia
  • Thalassemia
  • Sickle Cell Anaemia

Checklist before the procedure

Bone marrow transplant is a complicated medical procedure. You need to undergo various tests to determine the type and nature of the cells you will require. The doctor may also suggest you to first go for chemotherapy or radiation therapy to kill the marrow or cancerous cells. It is a week-long procedure, and you should make all necessary arrangements before you admit yourself to medical care. These are:

  • Check your insurance cover, financial liabilities, and bill payments
  • Sanctioning medical leave from office
  • Care arrangements for your kids and pets
  • Renting a house for your loved ones near the hospital
  • Travel arrangements from the hospital
  • Packing of necessities for the hospital

Many hospitals have expert counsellors to help bone marrow, transplant patients. Prepare a checklist and questionnaire and discuss all your concerns before going under the knife. It is essential that you feel relaxed and comfortable with the upcoming procedures.

What questions should I ask my doctor?

Here are some relevant questions that you can ask your doctor before your bone marrow transplant:

  1. How long will the surgery last?
  2. What are my survival chances?
  3. For how many days do I need to stay in the hospital?
  4. What about the follow-up procedures?
  5. When can I get back to work?
  6. Do I have any other treatment options?
  7. Can I live a normal and healthy life after a bone marrow transplant?
  8. Who can donate bone marrow to me?
  9. What are the relapse chances?
  10. What are the side-effects of this procedure?

Risks and Complications associated with Bone Marrow Transplant

Bone marrow transplant is a detailed procedure and can give rise to several temporary and permanent complications. Some temporary issues are a headache, low blood pressure, chills, pain, nausea, fever, breathlessness, and so on. However, the extent of complications can entirely depend on your age, overall health, medications, type of transplant, and so on.

Some significant complications are:

  • Internal bleeding in the brain, lungs, or other body organs
  • Vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea
  • Anaemia
  • Mucositis
  • Early menopause
  • Cataracts
  • Graft Vs. Host Disease, a condition where donor cells pose a threat to the body
  • Graft failure, a condition where new marrow doesn’t produce healthy cells
  • Damage to vital body organs

Outlook and Prognosis

Bone marrow transplant is a complex and advanced surgical procedure. The primary aim of an operation is to cure or control the disease, offer a better quality of life, and extend your life. The results depend entirely upon a patient’s metabolism and immunity strength. Some patients show positive effects of transplants with faster recovery, while some have to face several temporary and permanent complications. These complications are sometimes difficult to predict before the operation.

Line after Bone Marrow Transplant: Lifestyle Changes and Precautions

The recovery phase can be quite long after a bone marrow transplant. However, with an active and healthy lifestyle, you can try to curb it down. Here are some essential tips that can help you in faster recovery:

  • Protect yourself from infections. Wear a mask wherever you go.
  • Start light to moderate exercises after consulting the doctor
  • Drinking alcohol and smoking is prohibited after this surgery
  • Make sure you eat a healthy and nutritious diet
  • Immediately consult your doctor if you experience tiredness or fatigue all of a sudden

Living with a bone marrow transplant can be challenging initially. But with a positive outlook and a healthy lifestyle, you can lead a perfectly normal life in some time. Make sure you keep your family and friends closer for mental support.

Citizenship Amendment Act 2019

0
Citizenship amendment Act

The country is seeing a disastrous time. With fires and demonstrations all over the country, there have also been several cases of violent outbursts. There is rage and violence around us, but before condemning or supporting this new provision to Indian Constitution, it is necessary as a citizen to look into what this Act has to stay before taking a stand. Sound knowledge about the Act is necessary in order to take a logical stand and prevent any violent mishaps, which have been regular news for the past few days. This winter session of the Parliament saw another controversial Bill take the form of an Act after Article 370 came into play!

What does the Citizenship Amendment Act say?

The Citizenship Amendment Bill of 2019 has been made into an Act in the last session of the Parliament. This controversial Bill has triggered turmoil throughout the nation. CAA avails first track citizenship provisions to Hindu, Sikh, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian immigrants from neighboring countries of Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who have been residing in India without any documentation. The Bill seeks to amend the definition of illegal immigration by ensuring citizenship to the above-mentioned communities if they are settled in India for a period of six years. This Amendment bill excludes Muslims indirectly from the provision by stating that the first track citizenship is available to the persecuted section of Hindu, Parsi, Buddhist, Parsi, Sikh, and Christian community.

This Citizenship Act of 1955, states that in order to be a legal citizen of India apart from the being by birth, a person needs to reside here for 11 years out of 14 years. The new amendment by the Modi government reduces the erstwhile 11 years to six years for the aforementioned communities. Precisely, this legislation gives citizenship to people who are “forced or compelled to seek shelter in India due to persecution on the grounds of religion.”

Who are the beneficiaries of Citizenship Amendment Act ?

If we take a close look at this Act, it implies that people from Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsi, and Christian communities from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are liable to Indian citizenship if they have resided here from before December 31, 2014. This clearly suggests that these communities can be Indian citizens even though they lack the required document. Moreover, they will not be deported if they do not have valid documents.

Further, the Bill has reduced the term of residing in India from 11 years to six years for the beneficiaries.

Exclusions from the Citizenship Amendment Act

This Bill turned Act clearly demarcates some exclusions to these provisions. The tribal belts of Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya, and Mizoram are kept away from the purview of this Act, as they are included in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Areas falling under the Inner Limit notified by the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873 is also excluded. This demarcation clearly keeps Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Nagaland out of the ambit where this Act will be implemented.

Why this Act called for protests?

The protests which have been raging throughout the country are in different contexts. The entire northeast rise in revolt as they fear that this inclusion of refugees into their territory will lead to a change of demography. They feel threatened by the influx of people that this Act will initiate completely changing the uniqueness of the place to which the originally belong. Especially, the state of Assam is seen to violently respond against this Act. Why is this so? Although a specific part of the state is exempted from the Act, the majority is covered by CAA. The indigenous residents of Assam, fear that the illegal Hindu immigrant residing in the state will threaten the linguistic and cultural identity unique to Assam.

Other parts of mainland India are revolting since this Act very cleverly excludes the Muslim community from the list. The Constitution of India upholds a non-communal approach where different communities are claimed to live in peace and harmony. The Citizenship Amendment Act of 2019 tends to harm the constitutional ethos of the country, creating a bifurcation in terms of the privileges as an Indian citizen.

Disregarding a specific community from the Act clearly indicates discrimination in terms of religion, which goes against the essence of the Indian Constitution. This enrages a specific community, completely disrupting the harmony of the country.

Government’s logic behind the Act

The government put forward a logic that they are protecting the rights of the minority groups who have escaped persecution from the neighboring Muslim majority nations. However, there seems some discrepancy in logic, as there are other nations and communities that are not catered to by this Act. This Act does not take into its purview all minority sections of the society as it claims to be. For instance, the Rohingya Muslims and Hindus who faced persecution in Burma, Shia community and Ahmedia Muslim sect facing persecution in Pakistan, or the Christian and Hindu Tamils who are discriminated in neighboring Sri Lanka. What the government has to say on their part is that the Muslims can seek refuge in Islam dominated nations but have avoided the other queries.

The Oppositions Opinion on CAB

The Opposition (not merely the political ones) clearly sees this action of the central government as marginalizing the Muslim community. The Act put into implementation welcomes other communities as a part of India while infringing the Muslim community. It clearly indicates that the Muslim section of our society is degraded to the level of second class citizens giving preferential privileges to the other communities.

Moreover, this Act clearly ignores Article 14 of the Constitution, which talks of the right to equality of all citizens not discriminating on the basis of caste, class, creed, religion, or sex. This is a basis that the Constitution of India imparts, and the Parliament cannot possibly change the ethos of the Constitution. However, the present central government claims that they have maintained and have not violated the essence of the right to equality.

Personal Opinion on the nationwide protests

From intellectuals to the student community, from political oppositions to religious leaders, there has been a worldwide protest in the country against CAA. However, recent news showcases violent outbursts with the burning and destruction of public properties. This form of revolt needs to stop in order to demonstrate the real need of the time. People need to peacefully act as creating a crisis by destructing roads, and railways will not lead to a fruitful end.

We don’t need to be silent but maintain basic decency in order to make a voice that matters. Different universities across the country with the collaboration of students and teachers have risen in revolts. Time has come that we take up actions thinking rationally such that basic humanity is not lost in the process. Law and order need to prevail in order to uphold the integrity of the Constitution and the country.

In my Opinion, Opposition to any cause that might create conflict is necessary. But there stands a chance to adopt peaceful means, for demonstrating the need of the hour. If all roads start leading to violence, we will be losing out on the ideologies of Gandhi, Bose, and other patriots who lead the nation to independence!

Kiara’s life before acting

Kaira used to teach in her mother’s pre-school, before she got into acting. She would teach alphabets and nursery rhymes to toddlers. She would reach school by 7am in the morning, play with the kids, and teach them. She also mentioned about how she had to change diapers on many occasions.  Makeup is a very crucial factor in every actor’s life, and when that goes wrong? Its all over the news!! Kiara Advani did her own make up for an event, where she went a little..overboard? Poor Kiara needs makeup classes before actually getting down to the show-biz.

Her ‘Oops’ moment

Kiara was posing for the paparazzi in Juhu, when the pretty blue high-low dress that she was wearing, was almost uplifted by the wind until she was quick enough to hold it back down. Nice save, Kiara!

Kiara Advani and Maggie Noodles

Social media can go rough on actor for not living up to their game, sometimes. The Kabir Singh actress was trolled by people, based on photographs from a shoot, for a magazine, where according to them, she supposedly looked like Maggie noodles (because of the yellow color and texture of the dress). Instead of reverting aggressively, she replied by saying, ‘Haha, got ready in 2 minutes!’ Well, she sure knows how to give a good comeback.

Kiara’s comeback for Botox accusation

Kiara posted a screenshot in her stories, of the comments on her photo where she was accused of Botox surgery. She shared it with a caption that said, ‘Calm down peeps, don’t jump to conclusions. You might not fancy the cheeks, but it was no doctor, just some biriyani from the night before’. Good going, Kiara!

In a few interviews, Kiara confessed that she was uncomfortable with a few scenes in the movie, but her personal views cannot affect her acting. She also mentioned that she didn’t look at Kabir Singh’s character, as a hero, but a person with a lot of issues. Kiara also mentioned that one should look at the characters in Kabir Singh as fictional, and nobody has to be like them. She also adds that everyone is entitled to have their own opinions about the film. Think she handled that pretty well, eh?

Kiara Advani trolled again by netizens.

Kiara had posted a video on Instagram and Twitter, where she was singing a rap song and cutting her hair, saying that she was very busy with films as a result of which, she couldn’t maintain it. Netizens diss her for doing so, calling it a ‘cheap publicity stunt.’ Chill out, guys..its just hair! It will grow back.

She confessed about googling how to use a vibrator, the night before the scene was to be shot. She also talked about her grandmother, who was part-British, to the film. Kiara mentioned that she watched the entire film, including the orgasm scene, with a straight face like deadpan. On asking if she got the reference about how the girl was getting an orgasm in front of her whole family in the movie, her grandmother had apparently replied saying, ‘Well, in front of the whole world now’.

Kiara Advani is not just another dumbo in the show-biz, that’s for sure. Keep going, girl!
