DISCRIMINATION – An Indian Plague

0
education

Discrimination, a very controversial and widely discussed, debated and disputed topic, is very rigidly embedded in the everyday lives of people both common and extraordinary. If I set to pen down the discrimination faced by people in this world, there will be an endless list of such instances and can discrimination be limited to humans, is every creature on earth not a victim of discrimination in one way or the other. The answer is very apparent if one closely observes the world around them. However, it is best to refrain from discussing discrimination around the world and limiting it to India otherwise the list would be ceaseless.

Enter a classroom of a government school in rural India, what do you see? Kids sitting in groups but do you know the basis on which these groups are constituted, well, they are formed on the basis of wealth, class, status, gender and most importantly and evidently caste and religion. The teacher enters the class, the class greets the teacher but the teacher greets the frontbenchers, the economically, socially and politically superior class, the so-called privileged ones, while the poor, the downtrodden, the socially backward classes are outrightly ignored by the teacher, the teacher not only ignores them but pushes them to occupy the back seats in the class, they are demeaned by the teacher and other students, they are showered with the lowest grades no matter how wonderful their assignment would be. Blatant discrimination on the basis of caste and religion can be seen in the distribution of Mid Day meals in schools in India, where in the upper caste are provided Mid Day meals more regularly and adequately as opposed to their disadvantaged counterparts.

Another kind of discrimination very evident in schools is gender discrimination. At an early age boys and girls are introduced to the notion that there are separate toys, colours, dresses, rules and codes of conduct for them, they are taught there are differences between them besides the biological ones and this becomes the root of gender discrimination. Gender is a social construct where in the impressionable minds of children get captured and this strengthens the gender disparities and discrimination in society. This scenario of rampant discrimination is not limited to rural schools but is also prevalent in urban schools, even the private and reputed ones. School is a place where children learn to discriminate not only between the good and bad but also among themselves many times, but family plays an even greater role in this context.
An infant’s first interactions are usually with family members. Families instill social values, morals and lay down principles for the child who functions within this framework and learns to act and behave in accordance with the norms of the family, thereby acquiring the beliefs and notions of the family. Discrimination starts right from the conception of the child, the mother is under constant pressure to give birth to a male child as if she is responsible for deciding whether the child would be a male or female, families go to the extent of opting for sex-determination by way of sonography which is illegal in India and if they find out there’s a female in the mother’s womb they would kill her,or kill both the mother and the child, female infanticide is still prevalent in many parts of India.

If the girl is “allowed” to be born or to live, here “allowed” signifies authority of the patriarchal society that permits the girl’s survival, she faces no less discrimination than she had faced in her mother’s womb, there are a plethora of rules and regulations laid down for her since childhood, she is not allowed to wear clothes of her choice, she is not allowed to go out to play or even if she is then she is supposed to come back early, she is not supposed to argue with her brothers or any member of the family, she is supposed to keep her voice low and interaction with a member of the opposite sex is strictly prohibited for her. Some families believe girls don’t need education or employment and hence girls don’t receive education and are not allowed to work, though a girl doesn’t need to be “allowed” to work because right to education and employment are basic human rights.

Girls are also not supposed to choose a partner of their choice and work after marriage in many societies. Hence many girls face discrimination throughout their lives, the ones who are disadvantaged to be born in a family that doesn’t value a girl as a human entity. Families instill the idea in males and females that males are supposed to be authoritative, strong and the breadwinner of the family while females are to be meek and submissive, their only important roles in life being that of the wife, mother and homemaker.
The family is not only the source of gender discrimination but also class, caste, and religious discrimination. As the child grows up in the family, the family teaches him/her not to interact with a specific group of people such as the lower caste, the poor or people belonging to the minority community, they are introduced to the concept of untouchability when they see their family members practicing it with the sweeper or washroom cleaner who usually belong to lower castes. When kids go to school their parents teach them not to interact with children of a lower socioeconomic status than them, families keep a whole separate set of utensils for guests of a different class, caste, religion this gives children the idea that they are different from others, they are superior or inferior. Many families teach their kids that their’s is the only true religion that needs to be followed and respected, this creates feelings of dislike towards other religions in children that rapidly develops into discrimination. Hence, the school and family should be made aware of how they are contributing to discrimination in India in all spheres and must be encouraged to abandon such discriminatory practices.
Because of the glaring instances of discrimination we are exposed to in our families and schools, the idea to discriminate becomes embedded in many of us and so we discriminate at an individual level. A minister’s son is giving a pass when he breaks a rule while an ordinary person’s son would be punished for the same, while sitting in a metro haven’t you seen people getting up from their seats or worse still not letting the other person sit next to them just because the person seems to be economically disadvantaged. At your own college and class haven’t you seen people being discriminated against as they are from an economically and/or socially backward family or place, have you not seen people using words that signify a caste or place as derogatory terms, hence discrimination on the part of the individual manifests in diverse forms, there is a long list of the types of discrimination that exist in India and worldwide, I’ve just mentioned a few, there is absolutely no domain that is free from discrimination, not even public places, not even holy places like temples, mosques and the church, where there are many restrictions and rules regarding the entry of women and backward classes.

Thereby, discrimination is like a hydra-headed demon that has posed a great challenge to peaceful co-existence in India, it has plagued India over centuries and the need of the hour is to overcome it by all means so as to ensure the progress of the country in all facets whether economic, social or political.

Can love happen twice With the same guy?

RELATIONSHIP

It was Wednesday and there I was, squirming in bed as the clock struck 7. I pretended to sleep when I heard footsteps approaching my door. As the footsteps became more clear, they were accompanied by my mother’s awakening call for school. She bashed into my room telling me that I was running late for school and I pretended to be sick because it was my biology class test and I had not studied anything. For a change, mom didn’t enter into  a skirmish with me and receded back into the kitchen. For a moment, I couldn’t believe it but I was sure that it was my lucky day. Little did I know then, that that day was going to change my life forever.

As everyone left for their respective works, I woke up and opened Facebook which was my waking up ritual. I had a friend request that day, Ashish Mehra. I accepted the request and a message pops up within few seconds. The conversation started with a cliche “hey” and soon talking to him became the best part of my day. We chatted day and night, incessantly. My monotonous life altered and everyday, I had something to look forward to. It was him. From strangers to best friends,or something more than that? Was it love? Maybe. How was I supposed to know if it was love or just infatuation? But the thought of him being close to me, made my heart start pounding, it gave me a tingly feeling in my tummy and a chill ran down my spine. These were signals by God that I am in love. Atleast, that is how I explained these feelings to myself. I had fallen in love. Fallen in love with a guy I talked to on Facebook.

It was July 16th, the day we were supposed to meet for the first time. I had woken up at six in the morning, trying every favorite dress, matching shoes and what not. I wanted to look the best that day because maybe, I wanted him to look at me and think that I am all he wants and I couldn’t let go of this opportunity by looking bad. I had to look my best.

girl and boy in cafe

I reached the destination before time but I did not want to seem desperate so I wandered a little around the place when I received a call. It was from him. He had reached the place and was waiting for me. I deliberately delayed my entry because I wanted him to believe that I am not so eager to meet him. I entered the cafe and began scouring and then my eyes rested on the man in the corner with a book in his hand. I went closer and he was reading my favorite book. He got up as I approached the table, looking at me, smiling. I wondered if love at first sight existed because I had fallen head over heels in love with him. He stared at me and it was happening again, my heart was pounding again, the butterflies were back in my tummy, tickling me and the words froze in my throat. I was too nervous to say anything. So I just looked at the menu wondering if he was still looking at me.

“Namrata?” he said. I mustered all the courage to look into his eyes again as he slowly slid the book he was reading, my favorite book in my hands. My eyes oscillated from the book and back at him which showed him how baffled I was. “Open it!” he exclaimed. Perplexed, I turned the cover and there they were, those three magical words that I had been craving to hear.  I looked up at him and saw him grinning. Next I remember, tears were rolling down my eyes as I was looking at him, smiling. I couldn’t believe that we were together. That I had found the love of my life.

girl on phone

Later that day, I was lying down in my bed, thinking about all the events today. Recalling them and smiling like a lunatic. My phone ringed and I saw a message. I had a new match on tinder, the famous dating site. I opened it and blushed as the words “You and Ashish liked it each other” flashed on the screen. In that moment, I realized that I had fallen in love, first on Facebook and then on Tinder.

TOP 4 BENEFITS OF EXERCISE

0
exercise

All of us lead busy stress filled lives. As we try to keep up with our daily deadlines, corporate meeting and assignments (forced on to us by our evil bossesJ) many of us forget to look after our bodies. This usually affects us in the later parts of our lives an unhealthy individual is often troubled with health related problems. These problems don’t allow him to live his life to the fullest. Here are a few benefits of exercise which I believe will make you get up from your couch and start vying for a better lifestyle.

improve your health!!!
Improve your health!!!

1. HEALTHY SKIN:

Working out will impart a healthy glow to your skin. It will clear out the unwanted acne and those annoying blackheads which we all hate. The reason behind why exercise does this is very simple- as and when you work out, your heart pumps out blood more vigorously than it does normally. This blood which has been pumped with greater force can now reach the outermost layers of your skin. So now, more and more oxygenated blood is reaching your skin and the result? Well you guessed it! Your skin becomes healthier because of all the extra oxygen. Sweating during exercise will help in flushing out toxins and excess oil from the pores of your skin, so if you have got long term skin problems, then exercise may well be the cure you have been looking for….

TOP 4 BENEFITS OF EXERCISE

2. SOUND SLEEP:

Whenever you are agitated or under stress, the brain releases cortisol, a hormone which primarily induces the fight or flight mechanism. We however, in our lives neither get into brawls or run, but rather rack our brains in front of our laptops and computers. Thus the hormone keeps circulating in our blood stream because it is not getting used up. So you feel restless at night, even when you are tired and you want to sleep. However, exercise is the release value for the pent up cortisol and this helps you relax and sleep better.

If you sleep well at night, your overall performance during the day improves and you feel fresher and more energetic.

3. BOOSTING YOUR IMMUNITY:

When you exercise your circulation increases, because of this your white blood cell production increases, these cells move throughout your body and not only protect you from incoming diseases and pathogens, this makes you look healthy and less “under the weather”. Because of the increased white blood cell count, your old wounds and minor little cuts and bruises tend to heal faster.
It is common knowledge that the lymph nodes of the body are located near our muscles. When we exercise, our muscles contract and relax, and this in turn causes the lymph nodes to do the same. Because of this lymphatic fluid is released in the body, greater than average. The waste and toxins of your body are pumped out more often with the increased release of lymphatic fluid. Hence your puffiness of your body decreases.

4. REDUCED STRESS:

It is true!!! Exercise reduces stress. Our brain and our body are connected by millions of different neurons. So if our mind is stressed so are our bodies.

If we relax our bodies by exercise our mind also simultaneously relaxes with it. The result is that you feel more peaceful and more at ease throughout the day. Not only this, but exercising produces endorphins. Endorphins are natural painkillers produced by the brain- they not only reduce stress and help you feel better but they also activate your immune system and certain types of cells that destroy cancerous growth.

 word Stress

If you exercise regularly you not only help your body to get rid of that extra fat and glob but also provide your body with the above benefits. Exercise comes as a whole package and in today’s world where we are already fighting pollution and new resistant bacteria’s and viruses our bodies need all the help they can get from us. Thus it is our duty to stay fit and healthy and keep our immune system cranked up to the maximum.

So, what are you waiting for? Get up, be active and be fit and healthy!!!

I am sorry

0
girl

I am sorry for the times I hurt you,
I am sorry for all the pain,
I am sorry for all the hate and the unnecessary disdain.
I am sorry for being rude, for being selfish and mean,
I am sorry for making you feel unwanted and unseen.
I am sorry for not trusting and for breaching your trust,
I am sorry for being annoying and for asking for too much.
I am sorry that I could not be all that you wanted,
I am sorry for the times you felt disappointed.
But are you sorry too for what you did to me,
Are you sorry for the darkness, the nightmare you made me see?
I said I am sorry to hurt you and to cause you pain,
but didn’t you hurt me as much because our love for you was just a game.
I had been rude,I had been selfish and mean,
but it was only after you showed me the side of you so inhuman and unclean.
I left you,I didn’t trust you,but it’s not me who you should blame,
Because didn’t you do the same, not once, but again and again.
You seemed all perfect, all flawless and good,
But you were not there when I needed you,and you never understood.
I didn’t ask for too much,I just wanted you to be there,
but you failed to do so and you never seemed to care.
So,I am sorry that we could not be together,
I am sorry because it wasn’t meant forever.

Recently Class XII results, announced  here on Saturday. A big congratulation to all 12thies for your boards result. Now every student is all set to  decide his/her career. Some of you may be overwhelmed of your good result and some may be drowned in guilt for not so good result. Remember students the marks you get are mere ‘numbers’ which you strived hard to get all in this one year.
The numbers on your mark sheet are combined sincere efforts of both teachers and students, you both strive for one goal. Just think and plan something very big now.
Do not get upset or demotivate for what you’ve not achieved.
Remember you get what you deserve..and no one can undone the fate.

One thing more students, do not think like ‘I did’nt scored well just because I did’nt got more than 90%’ . I agree competition is toughest in today’s world but these marks does’nt judge your personality, IQ level, character and most important– ‘future’. Just scoring above 90% doesnt make you intelligent or superior over other who got 75-80% somewhat and on the other hand you don’t only ‘pass’ if you get 90 percentile. Its just passing one level and you did it.
Yes, You’ve unlocked one main door, now explore the entire house. At this time lots of confusion burning in back of your mind about college, course, university
Take a back seat and enjoy, and BEWARE.

Now , you would be exposing in real world, till school we remain in a protective shell, under nurturing of parents, teachers, hang out of friends, but now things would change. You have to travel yourself, manage your pocket money, deal with studies with less guidance, less attention and all. Still these are the matters which you would learn soon. The main basic theme which all parents and students should realize that every person is specialized in his or her arena. Some is good at one, another at one. No one is equal. Everyone is not of 90 club.  So do not force or compare your child to opt for a career and to be like your neighbour’s son/daughter whatsoever. And students, do not be over confident for good result and do not demoralize yourselves for a not so good result, please note, results are always good, its only about comparison which create a fuss in our mind.
If we see our hand then all of our fingers are of different sizes, still together they make a group through which we write our fate.Be always positive. Now dream for your future and do not be like ‘I’ve scored well in 12th so, I will do well in rest of the future too.

Do not be over confident of your success, because if you won’t succeed in future somewhere, then people will turn your struggle to co-incidence.

Abdul kalam

Leave all materialistic things and be more mature. Pull your socks up and get ready to face the REAL WORLD. Enjoy college life.

BEING SINGLE IS LOVE

0
girl

Ever wondered what a singleton feels like on seeing happy, mawkish couples all around, engrossed in the hazy fantasies of romance and passion. Well, many would reckon that singles feel dismal and miserable, this may partially be true but it’s not the absolute truth. Singletons are happy being as they are, unruffled by the worries of being in a relationship where you constantly need to care for the other person’s choices and needs so much so that you have to engage in a list of compromises and sacrifices on your part. And then in the end are the efforts always appreciated? Is the commitment and investment showed by one in a relationship always equal to that of the other?

Love is a powerful emotion, it’s passionate, intimate, profound, overwhelming and all-consuming but is being in a relationship an implication of being in love? Can singles not be in love and yet be single? Such questions are pondered over by millions, but to come to a definitive answer is a personal choice, I believe it is in all likelihood possible for a single to be in love but not in a relationship. Observe a couple around you, the first few minutes they will be all hunky-dory, adorable and so much in love, it is as if they are the only two people in the world, the only existence that sustains in the world around them is that of rosy dreamy musings of what they term love. And in a while you’ll notice a dramatically, drastic transition, the couple that seemed too perfect moments ago now seems so broken, so cold, so detached, and why? Because that is usually the order of things, one partner has expectations too unreasonable, or unrealistic from the other, while the other is a victim of possessive love thinking that they might lose their partner to another, some partners engage in game-playing, engaging in a relationship with multiple partners at the same time, so with all the anxiety, misery, the fear of being cheated, the fear of separation and of agony and dismay, do you believe that a singleton would be unhappy with his or her relationship status? Undoubtedly there are times when singletons crave, yearn and long for the company, the presence, the warmth of someone they love or they are overwhelmed with a desire to be loved ,but that aside, the experience of singlehood is precious, devoid of the sufferings and complexities, devoid of the unnecessary intricacies of being in a relationship. A perpetual contact with a partner can exhaust your mental and emotional resources, with none left to utilize for yourself as all the energy has been focused on that one person.

There’s hardly anytime left for yourself when you constantly think about the other person, when interdependence takes over you. It is not so in the case of singles who get more time for introspection, reflection and self-enhancement, the time spent alone is the most engaging and productive when you have the opportunity to introspect and when you are aware of your emotions and their inference. When singles watch couples who continuously argue over choice of one another’s friends or ask the other to choose between love or friendship or when they argue over things as meagre as the sharing of a bed or a television remote or bigger issues such as settling down, it is discernible that singles feel blessed of their relationship status. Couples are initially delusional about their partner’s qualities and their relationship ,conjecturing them to be perfect, but over time they realize that their partner has flaws that earlier seemed to be cute but now are annoying and unlikable, and when this realization dawns upon them it erodes a loving relationship, many times to the extent of driving the relationship to a break-up. Hence, singletons do cherish singlehood, they desire love but more so they desire peace, they wait for love to happen, they don’t experience the wedded bliss or the fanciful romance of a couple but they do experience the joy, freedom and independence that tags along with singlehood, for them being single is love.

The temple of Rats

0
DSC

The temple of rats or Chuha Mandir, also known as Karnimata ki mandir is known for rats! Situated at Deshnoke in Bikaner, this temple houses an approximate of 20,000 black rats and few white rats as well. The temple is dedicated to Karni Devi, the Kul Devi of the clan.

karni devi

Story of Karni devi

The villagers of Deshnoke rever Karni Devi as the goddess of their clan. Long back a disease spread across the entire village and people succumbed to that illness and died, the entire village prayed to Karni Devi to save them from this distress.  The time of the death of the last surviving boy came near,  and he died. His parents wept copiously and prayed to Karni Devi to restore the boy’s life. Karni Mata appeared before them. She said that she cannot bring a boy back to life but she can bring that boy back in another form, in the form of a rat that will reside in the temple. This is how she would bring back the other boys of the village. When the rat dies, a boy will be born in the village and vice Versa. This process continues according to the belief of the villagers and the temple became full of rats. People feed and worship the rats.

People feed and worship the rats. It is also forbidden to stamp the rats or walk over them. If one walks over and kills a rat even by mistake, the person has to replace the rat with a gold or silver replica of the rat and fund it to the temple authorities. A massive cauldron of milk and sweets is placed for feeding the rats. Apart from this, there is a rat breeding site inside the temple. It is also believed that the sight of white rat is a sign of good luck.
