Want to Find Your Soul- Varanasi Welcomes You!

0

It’s been 20 years since I am living in this Holy city and every year has been magical! Varanasi, Kashi, Banaras, can call by any name you want but even a shortest visit to this place can give you a lot of memories. Well mind you, that memory can be as pleasing as river Ganges or as horrible as getting robbed because Varanasi is famous for their Con men too!

Being the spiritual capital of India, you will find a worship place at every nook and corner of this city. Anyways, this is not why the city is called spiritual. Ask yourself “what does spiritual means to me?” The answer could vary among every individual. Let me give you a few instances. Does spiritual means connection with God to you, or is it love? Is it food or music? Or is it getting high on weed or simply watching a sunrise at a river bank? Your answer could be any but according to me spiritual means anything which makes you happy and keeps your soul calm. It can be visiting a temple or just have your favourite food with a bunch of friends. This city can give you anything to help your soul put back in its right place.

So the question comes from where to begin your day in Varanasi?

If you are an early bird then well and good, if not, then come on, just a day, it’ll be jolly (I promise!). Loose fitting clothes, a cap and loafers make perfect attire. Try reaching the Ganges river bank before 5 am. One bank will be long stretch of ancient monuments and temples, each having a significant history behind it. These are known as “Ganga Ghats”. The other bank you see across the river is called Ramnagar, the place where kings and queens of Varanasi used to live (Ramnagar Fort). Coming back to the Ghats, grab a cup of tea, walk till you find a quiet place on stairs to sit, take deep breath and relax. The only sound you can hear will be of the blowing wind and chirping birds and flute music if someone is playing nearby. Wait for the sunrise.

Now don’t grab your DSLR or phone to take a picture. Instead close your eyes and feel the sunrays. After all you are here for the purpose of finding your soul not to capture sunrise! You can sit for hours there if you wish to or take a boat ride across the river. I bet you must be feeling hungry. Welcome to the largest local market of Varanasi- Gadauliya! The roadside shops offer you with typical Uttar Pradesh breakfast like Chola Bhature, Samosa, Kachauri, etc. Now, if you are a religious person, then don’t miss visiting the famous Vishwanath Temple, if not then just take a tour inside Vishwanath Gali.

Personally I believe Vishwanath Gali is the most confusing network of roads, constructed ages ago and in such a way that every turn looks the same. Trust me if you are lost, not even GPS can help you, but only the localites! The funniest moment will be if you are walking and a giant bull comes in your way, rather I would say you came in his way cause he’s not going to move anywhere back, oh these narrow passages!
Let’s assume you got out of Vishwanath Gali by evening, depending on what type of person you are an enthusiastic extrovert or a self-indulging introvert, can choose your way. Well I would say if you are an extrovert should try Varanasi’s popular intoxicating drink ‘Bhang’ and spend some time with yourself and your thoughts, might find some answers within yourself. On the other hand if you are an introvert, better you go back to Ghat and prepare yourself for the grand Aarti of the river (at Dasaswamedh Ghat). It starts sharply by 7, no matter of the season. A huge crowd gathers for this and even if you are an introvert a positive vibe flows into you just by hearing the constant ringing of bells and looking at the beautiful way of tribute to Ganges, might ring a bell in your mind too. Well it’s up to you, it’s your choice where to go and what to do. Of course the entire city cannot be covered in a day!

I hope your day really ends with finding yourself, rediscovering and improving yourself. There is no particular season or time to visit Varanasi. But yeah, if you are a tourist then visiting during festival of Vijaya Dashmi and Dev Deepawali are my personal favourites. Don’t forget to indulge yourself in sweet dishes like Rabdi and Rasmalai!
This is one place in India which even if you visit alone, loneliness will never cross your path. Wish you have an amazing time and a lot of memories.

YOGA, Hope for A HEALTHY ERA

0
Have you ever gotten up feeling tired and had to work throughout the day? Do the people around you or circumstances seem too overbearing? Try yoga! Research proves that it has revolutionary impacts.

JUNKIE FOOD CONSUMPTION

Fast paced and precise rhythm, that life today thrives on, leaves no place for an elaborate healthy meal that can cater to body needs without the cure of being excess. Food today is a quickie because of less time to prepare or lack of need to savour the taste of ingredients or callous behavioural habits.
To remedy the ailments that this loophole called food is giving way to, the potential threats that modern oils, synthetic spices or genetically manufactured vegetables provide to our body, YOGA is the answer. It strengthens our internal organs and spurs the body to eliminate the excess nutrients or toxics maintaining a healthy equilibrium.
Dhanur Asan helps to eliminate all the gastrointestinal troubles while Halasan strengthens the liver. Chakrasan and Bakrasan play a colossal role in fat burning.

PHYSICAL FITNESS

A healthy mind rests in a healthy body. Through simple YOGA moves the body can be trained to appear attractive, function attentively and radiate exuberance.
Good height can be triggered through Taad Asan while Shirsha Asan and Bakrasan ensure a streamlined and balanced body causing you to be the talk of the town! Sarvangasan pumps the circulation of body throughout the spine strengthening the back muscles, increasing the receptivity of nerves, helping attain erect posture, removing hunch back. Halasan removes lethargy making one energetic. Thus adding appeal to personality.
IMPROVES APPEARANCE: A significant cause of worry in our age is ‘appearance’. People aspire to look youthful and agile, which often lands them on the cosmetic surgeon’s work table. Laughter being the best medicine; YOGA seconds it, as a simple and handy way of defeating ageing or wrinkles. Working out calories through a heady run isn’t possible for all people but to sit and meditate or to control breathing to attain a glowing, refreshed and lively body and skin is definitely a thing to do. Shavansan, Adho Mukha Svanasan and Padamasan ensure dynamic facial glow.

YOGA and DYNAMISM

Interesting thing about yoga is that there is no asana with a single benefit. Each asana heals multiple problems across the body. A regular schedule with yoga a part can act as a shield to million ailments-chronic or acute. It restores potential to the trio- mind, soul and body.

THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS

Setuasan has a miraculous effect on chronic backache. Pavan Mukt Asan elevates constipation. Vajara Asan helps in powerful digestive system alongside giving a new vigour to nervous system. Paschimottaan Asan helps relieve menstrual pain or back pain, liver problems, piles and obesity. Dhanur Asan cures rheumatism and pain in elbow joints and palm joints.
Liver is the metabolism centre of the body. It helps regulate blood glucose level and cholesterol breakdown; preventing major risks of myocardial infractions and mental retardation by regulating the osmotic pressure of brain cells (astar cells ). Mayura Asan keeps liver in health along side preventing indigestion.

BEGINNER’S EXERCISES

Pranayama: The most effective set of exercises that helps regulate breathing, thinking and understanding. Analom- vilom, Bhramri and Kapal bhatin are an integral part. By simple modulation in breathing can initiate the production of stress reducing hormones, joy inspiring hormones, hormonal regulation and much more.
Suraya namashkar: It is a cycle of 12 simple steps as a salutation to the Sun. They ensure an all round warm up and revitalization of all receptors. Sets you in a hyper drive of energy, making you feel invincible and optimistic.

PEACE OF MIND

Starting your day with the solemn chanting of Om has the potential to shake your senses and make you feel anew. It is rejuvenating. The vibrations travel throughout the body stimulating all the nerve endings YOGA helps you channelize your thoughts and energy helping you combat the daily Life hurdles and yet keep your focus.
REDUCING CRIMES: Crime germinates on the lands of unstable emotional or familial grounds. One can’t be expected remain poised in crisis but if individuals have the inner strength to combat their inner demons, there is no defeating them. To rise above adversity, is the best revenge. An yoga provides us with a bower of mental calm that helps us take justified and calculated actions.
SOCIAL BONDS: Relationships today are standing on quivering grounds. Who is to be blamed? The hectic schedules… never ending competition… or the mad single mindedness to excel? But knowing the culprit won’t change a thing. We need to change a few things here and there about the way we operate to bring the change. We need to make the effort to strengthen bonds. Give your mind the freedom and quality time to access and correct our actions. For all the haste has created the chasm that we need to diminish through thoughts, words and deed. Yoga can help clear the mind to possibilities and provide us the much needed far-farsightedness. It connects the world for it lacks the language that breeds discrimination. It thrives on the will power to unite the world.
[beautifulquote align=”full” cite=””]YOGA in Sanskrit is a term to define the ‘Divine Union’. But it isn’t about Divine only rather Union or should we say understanding; it is a way to reach a state of mind and health wherein one can make decisions to make a difference to his/her life. A place of union of body, mind and soul; a place where you can put your thought and assign yourself the action plan to breathe life into your aspirations through a goal oriented stable mind and a trained body.
Excellence today is the key factor to take on the world but don’t let it be a target to achieve, make it the way to live. YOGA promises it all; Let’s just give it a try this year![/beautifulquote]

SOME TIPS AND TRICKS FOR HAVING GREAT SKIN

2

Skincare is something which is a very important part of our daily regimen. Not only women but even men want to have a clear and glowing complexion.
Having a great skin is very essential because it adds confidence onto your personality.
Today we will hover onto some tips and tricks you must follow to have a gorgeous skin.

1: CTM

picisto-20160103044544-659575

We all wish to live in a clean lace, right? The same way our skin wishes to be clean. A clean skin will become healthy skin & hence give Natural Glow. In fact cleansing is one of the most effective ways of removing dirt, dust & dead layer of cells from your skin.

Cleansing, toning & moisturizing are very important. In fact these are the first step to a clear complexion.
You must cleanse, tone and moisturize your skin at least twice a day.If you just make CTM a part of your routine, you would have a healthy skin.

2: Take proper sleep

A good night’s sleep is very important for our body and mind to feel healthy, fresh and active.

I can’t even stress on how important sleep is to beautify your skin. If you don’t take proper sleep it will reflect on to your skin . Your skin definitely needs the beauty sleep.

3: Vitamin C

citrus fruits benefits

Vitamin c is the greatest gift that you can give to your skin. A vitamin c serum adds gloss and shine to your skin. It brings life to your skin.

There are many affordable vitamin c serums in market like Body Shop’s, Kiehl’s, etc. Also incorporate vitamin C rich food items in your diet like orange, lemon, lime so that you get a dose of it both externally and internally.

4: Vitamin E

Vitamin E  vitamin eYou can increase the antioxidant by taking vitamin E rich fruit or capsules available in the market. But you should consider using more and more natural food.
Another great tip for having great skin is vitamin E. You can either buy vitamin E moisturizer or cut the vitamin E capsules and squeeze the oil out of it. Now apply it on your face. This can definitely do wonders for your skin.

5: Water

Water is life and the same goes for your skin. If you want youthful skin make water your best friend. Drink at least 8-9 glasses of water everyday. Whatever you apply on your face, if you do not drink water your skin will not be hydrated and will lack the lustre.

6: Sunscreen

Difference between sunblock and sunscreen:

I will give a very short and simple explanation here.

Sunscreen & Sunblock are not the same. In general, sun block is referred to the broad spectrum sunscreens which block both UVA and UVB rays while sunscreen is the one that protects against UVA only. Although, now a days almost all sunscreens/sunblocks protect against both rays but it will still be useful to read the label first.

I cannot even emphasize how important sunscreen is in our daily regimen. If you do not wear sunscreen the sun will definitely worsen your skin. You will have pigmentation, tanning, rough skin and even hypersensitivity.

One great tip for people who have very oily skin and can’t find a suitable sunscreen is to go for water resistant sunscreen and if you sweat a lot after applying sunscreen then add some rose water onto the sunscreen, and then apply it on your face. You won’t have to worry thereafter.

7: Face Mask\Face pack

Twice in a week you must apply face pack on to your face. This triggers the dirt deep inside from your skin. You can use both hydrating and tightening face masques.

8: Scrubbing

Scrubbing is very important for your skin to get rid of dead skin cells.Twice in a week you must scrub your face to slough down the dead skin cells and reveal a clear complexion.
Scrubbing is a good idea for oily skin. It removes the dirt and keeps the pores clean. Make a simple scrub at home of masoor dal and rose water. If you are making it in winters, add a spoon of malai to give some added moisture.
So these were some valuable tips for the skin you always desired. Remember a right skincare regimen is as important as finding a right partner.

Break up? Let’s move on.

0

DEEP BREATHING, DEEP BREATHING! Whoooooooooo Phewwwwwwwwww… She continued to do as advised.
“It is only a breakup! Try to calm down”
“How? It is like somebody stuck a knife into my throat. I am incapable of breathing. The world is spinning!!”
“It always did, only you were ignorant”
“I guess that’s it. I was IGNORANT” and subtly she made it all her fault and slipped into her comfortable wear just to snuck into bed on a beautiful spring evening.

Is there a reason why a girl feels so many emotions at the same moment when boys are gifted with the emotional range of a teaspoon? Well nobody can answer that without being a feminist. So this question at this juncture is irrelevant. Let’s rephrase.

After a heart break, is there some magical way to flip all our inner dilemma into something productive and move on with correcting the mistakes(if made any) in the past relationships? Hands down, there obviously is (at least that’s what my experience and Carrie Bradshaw says).

No binge eating:

As much as we crave for a double choco chip dark chocolate sundae, there are so many alternatives in its place to actually make you feel better by releasing those ‘make good feel’ hormones. It is completely alright to invest in chocolates as they say it cures depression but to totally shift to a diet which is so harsh to those darling curves is being rude to your own body. Incorporate fruits and salad in your diet. They are a healthy and low fat substitute which leave your skin glowing and your body bloat free.

No dark rooms and crying:

Why shut all the colours behind the blinds and sob for the person who is entirely clueless about your situation? As much as we girls believe in ‘letting it all out’, there are a few others who focus on spending all this energy into something productive. Weeping to some extent makes one feel good but also leaves the skin in a pretty bad shape. Get out, make plans, and go adventuring.

Stop blaming and love yourself:

Those questions WHY, WAS IT MY FAULT, WE COULD HAVE BEEN… etc., do occur after a jilt but they should not be entertained. Be a level headed smart woman, who has her issues under control. Do not let your insecurities get the best of you. Have a positive attitude, let go and believe in the universe’s plan.

Do not be afraid to fall in love again:

Love is a beautiful feeling and what if one did not respect it or you two broke up? There is always a reason why it did not workout and a sign that it’s time to get adept to a much evolved feeling of love from a better person or to be perfectly single and discover oneself. It’s up to you girl! As long as you respect yourself, make it a point to look pretty for yourself, walk with head held high and keep all the negative vibes out, it would indicate that you are dealing with your love life-crisis pretty and well.

In the end I would like to quote Shakespeare,
“Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind”.

0

Nothing in the world is more adored than the fragrance of our mother land that is imbibed in our heart. The sweet familiarity of our homes in the roots of our motherland brings us closer to what we really are and differentiates us from what we have become to gain materialistic assets. There is one such asset which refreshes our memory as well as our taste buds whenever we think of our motherland that is Sarson ka saag which has originated from Punjab, the land of five rivers.

Sarson ka Saag is basically luscious green gravy served with a dollop of desi ghee and makki ki roti.

It is one of the most famous dishes of Punjab. Winter is the time when vegetable markets are loaded with lush green leafy vegetables. That’s why sarson ka saag is the sought after gem dish and quite simple to make, says Vikram Arora, Executive Sous Chef at Hotel Four Seasons, Mumbai.

Mustard leaves have a very distinct & little bitter taste, which goes away after cooking to a certain extent. It also possesses some sweetness which mellows down after cooking is done, so to balance out the taste, we add makai ka atta and sometimes little jaggery. Sarson ka saag tastes best with makki ki roti, homemade white butter, and jiggery, traditionally saag used to be cooked in an earthen ware pot with charcoal underneath, continues Chef Vikram.

Here are some tips and tricks one should keep in mind while preparing sarson ka saag

  1. Proportion of the various green leaves used in the recipe should be exact.

Why Chandra Nandni Lost a Dedicated Viewer

0

Ever since I watched Chandra Nandni’s promo in mid September, I had been waiting with bated breath for 10th October 2016 for the series to air. The series is produced by Ekta Kapoor and the characters of Chandragupta Maurya and Nandni are excellently portayed by Rajat Tokas and Shweta Basu. Unfortunately, outstanding actors and expensive sets are not a substitute for excellent content. Fortunately for me, I stopped watching the drama and discovered other series(not Indian of course!) to entertain myself but Chandra Nandni lost a dedicated viewer (if at all they care!).

Some of the reasons why Chandra Nandni’s plot has lost steam are:

1. Similarity with the Jodha Akbar series

Though the plot may/may not bear a striking resemblance with the real-life Chandra/Nandni, it is surely greatly inspired by  another historical drama series- Jodha Akbar which was aired on Zee Entertainment Enterprises. This makes the plot insipid , monotonous and predictable. Some strikingly similar excerpts from the two serials are:

  • The lead couple in both series get married due to political reasons
  • There is great animosity (ghruna) between husband and wife from day one
  • Jodha begum had raised her dagger on Emperor Akbar for self-defence on their first night and Nandni raised her sword to assassinate Chandra on their first night
  • Akbar claimed that he had no heart and Chandra follows suit
  • The chief queens Rukaiyya begum and Helena from Jodha Akbar and Chandra Nandni respectively endlessly scheme against the female protagonists and apply insult to injury wherever possible
  • Salima begum, Akbar’s second chief queen and queen Durdhara, Emperor Chandragupta’s second wife constantly try to improve relations between the lead couple
  • Mariam Makhani and Rajmata are very impressed by their respective daughters-in-law and consider them as their daughters
  • Adham Khan, a close relative of Akbar plots to usurp the throne and so does Malayaketu, Chandragupta’s brother-in-law
  • Akbar’s brother-in-law Sharifuddin lusts after Jodha begum and so does Chandra’s brother-in-law Malayaketu
  • The emperors hate their ‘beloved’ queens and yet find excuses to spend most of their time with them
  • Both of them command their ‘beloved’ queens to give them a bath before granting their request
  • They feel a sense of accomplishment by humiliating their ‘beloved’ queens

2. Irrational character sketches of the lead actors

    Character Sketch of Chandra:

  • Chandra seldom keeps court hearings and when he does, the prime accused is Nandni and her family who are blamed for everything wrong that happens in the palace
  • He is overinvolved in the affairs of his wives rather than the citizens of Magadha
  • He disrobed Nandni to check whether she has any weapons on her
  • Chandra tortures Nandni because his mother was tortured by  Nanda, Nandni’s father who had imprisoned her
  • He is very suspicious about Nandni’s actions and doubts that she has affairs with other men
  • He always justifies his act of killing Nandni’s brothers to avenge his acharya, Chanakya’s insult in Nanda’s court

Character Sketch of Nandni:

  • Nandni loves her father Nanda blindly and can go to any extent to please him. She flares up when people speak about the ruthlessness of Nanda, willingly agrees to marry her molester Malayaketu and assassinate Chandragupta- the Emperor of Magadha.
  • She always admits to having committed a crime without any resistance when she is tried in Chandra’s court so that he sentences her to death as she feels that she is already dead after the death of her father at the hands of her husband.
  • Nandni is portrayed as a warrior princess though she has never fought a single war.

3. Both the characters are very impulsive and easily influenced by others’ views.

4. Most of the episode’s air time is wasted in contemplating about the excerpts of the preceding episodes.

You can skip watching the series for a week and when you come back, you will still understand the plot without watching any of the episodes you missed.

5. Plots are highly predictable, muddled and have abrupt conclusions.

So if you have already watched Jodha Akbar, you can pretty well make a guess how Chandra and Nandni will end up falling in love(no brownie points here). If you are indeed fascinated by the Mauryan Empire ,there is a lot of literature available on the Internet which sheds light on the life and achievements of Chandragupta Maurya rather than watching this fictive series.

BIGGEST BOX OFFICE FLOPS OF 2016

0

In 2016 we have the soul sucking sex comedies, Kya Kool Hai Ham 3, Mastizade and Great Grand Masti. We also saw Love Games which was going for deliciously perverse but was just unintentionally comic. Nothing can match these movies for sheer awfulness. But you do not need me to tell you that.. Instead, let us talk about the year’s biggest disappointments of BOX OFFICE. Films that came with expectations and then failed to deliver. These for me were the epic downers of the year.

5) Rock On 2

Eight years ago we fell in love with a rag-tag rock band named magic with Adi, Joe and KD or killer drummer. I was excited to see these characters back on screen but Rock On 2 was a damp squib. The sequel was not actively bad but it was just so bland that it became impossible to care. Debutante director Shujaat Saudagar was hobbled by the convoluted script by Abhishek Kapoor and Pawali Chaudhari. The action moved between Mumbai and Meghalaya. The landscapes were stunning but the logic was limp. And even though composers Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy created few high notes, the sound track was not the patch on the original, There just was not enough magic here.

4) Flying Jatt

The film presented what is probably the world’s first sikh superhero in film. A man whose costume is stitched by his mom, and in between feats of courage he needs to stop at sabzi mandi to pickup lauki for mamma. This could have been a lot of fun but director and writer Remo D’Souza made an insufferable film. The biggest offender was WWE wrestler Nathan Jones, with his patent dialogue “I have a black soul”, rooh meri kali hai. It was utterly exhausting.

3) Mirzaya

Mirzaya was a miracle of craft and technique. The cinematography by Pawel Dyllus was breathtaking. The visual effects production design and costumes were striking and the music by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy was memorable. Every frame was painstakingly constructed. But the story and characters were so inert that the film never came to life. Despite the obvious hard work that was poured into the project, Mirzaya remained a beautiful lifeless manniquin of BOX OFFICE.

2) Baar-Baar Dekho

This movie was a mistifying experience. It started with a lovely montage of a grand romance with a chartbursting song Kaala Chashma. The problem was everything in between. The film was essentially the cinematic equivalent of a hallmark Card with all these characters imparting life lessons. So wise pandit says ‘badi badi baato par nahi choti baato par dhyaan do’. And a sagely professor of mathematics declared ‘ balance ke begair koi equation perfect nahi hoti.‘ Can you take any film seriously in which Sidharth Malhotra is a professor of Vedic mathematics? Despite the gloss and beauty, this film remained desperately flawed. It was a slog to sit through it even once.

1)  Mohen Jodaro

I am sure that the director Ashutosh Gwariker started Mohen Jodaro with a grand vision. A sort of Amar Chitrakatha meets Three hundred meets Bahubali. The film had talent and sweat and skill. And it was heart-breaking to see this labour of love turned into an unintentional comedy. The head dresses that the characters were wearing made it impossible to focus on the narratives. The evil pradhan of Mohen Jidaro wore this gigantic one with horns. ‘Chaani’ the leading lady was partial to this ridiculous feathered contraption. And even the regular citizens seemed weighed down by all that weights on their heads. The film was destroyed between been bewildering and just bad. Even the industrial sincerity of Hritikh Roshan could not save it from an unmitigated disaster of BOX OFFICE.
