The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living A Good Life written by Mark Mason was published on 13 September 2016. Published by Harpercollins it has recently become one of the best selling non-fiction book.

Book Review : The Subtle Art of

Mark Mason is a blogger from America. He has been writing his views on happiness, self-knowledge, habits, and relationship and his views have helped in improving the lives of many since 2009.

In this book just like his blog, his writing is interactive and he starts with telling you how we are wasting our energy by giving too many f*cks about everything and everyone. F*cks or Importance has to be given in matters related to family, friends, and other important stuff. It so happens that we get upset about simple things like not getting enough ketchup packets at a takeaway.

He challenges our beliefs, beliefs that have been saved in our mind since a young age. He, in a subtle way, explains us with stories on how one can perceive life and he also promises that by following his ideas the problems will not be disappearing but will surely help you deal with them in a better manner. Life being happy all the time is a lie sold by the marketing agencies and reality is when we feel sad about not being accomplished as others instead of feeling ok about it we get more reasons to worry about thanks to social media. Be sad or worried when you are sad or worried instead of being sad or worried about it and it will help you feel better at a faster rate.

One of the most memorable teaching in his book is that one can choose the suffering one wants to go through and once chosen enjoy the suffering as it gives you the expected result. Example, choosing to work out in the gym. If you enjoy the suffering, exhaustion, body aches and diet you get the expected result of chiseled body. The book is packed with these kinds of ideologies and they do sound realistic.

His perspectives will push you to think more about our concept of living life and maybe even help you work on it more.

Overall this book holds the attention of the reader successfully until the end and teaches concepts that can be carried in our lives. A book worth reading and gifting.

“Some people think that I am very arrogant, but I am genuinely a very private and shy person. I open up to people who are close to me, and with them, I am a different person.” This statement by Sridevi is enough to sum up her entire life. The dance number ‘Hawa Hawai’, cited by The Times of India as “one of the unforgettable numbers of Sridevi”. This song became so popular that she was known by this name all over the country more than her name – Sridevi. Her 1989 film, ChaalBaaz, in which Sridevi played a double role was ranked fourth in the Filmfare list of ’80 Iconic Performances of Hindi Cinema’. In the year 1992, Sridevi starred opposite Amitabh Bachchan in the film Khuda Gawah. The actress again played a double role. The film was mostly shot in Afghanistan. The last major film Sridevi starred in before she took a break from the film industry was Judaai, which came in the year 1997. The actress played a greedy housewife going to utmost extent for money. A film critic, Subhash K. Jha wrote that Sridevi “left us with the most stunning hurrah in Judaai. A terrible film that I’ve watched countless times to see her play the money-minded harridan who ‘sells’ her husband to Urmila Matondkar. Who but Sridevi could carry off such an outrageous role with such enthusiastic élan?!”

Anupam Kher, who has worked with Sridevi in many films, said “Sometimes some people are so close to you, some people affect you so much, the person, the actor, the personality, talking about that person in the past tense is very saddening. To me, Sridevi as an actor, as a person, as a friend… We have worked together in sixteen films. So her memory will always be alive in my heart. So, I am feeling very weird to talk about her as ‘she was’. It will take me some time to prepare myself to talk about her in the past tense. But, we’ve lost the biggest human being, and the biggest star of our country.” She was loved so much by the people of India that her funeral was attended by a large number of mourners from all over the country. People came to see their “first female superstar” for the very last time.

Mahatma Gandhi and Women Empowerment

0
Women Empowerment

“To call a woman the weaker sex is a libel; it is a man’s injustice to woman. If by strength it is meant moral power then a woman is immeasurably man’s superior. Has she not more self-sacrificing, has she not great powers of endurance, has she not greater courage? Without her man could not be. If non- violence is the law of our being, the future is with women.”

Mahatma Gandhi.

The position of women in India has diverse in different periods and in different classes, religion, and ethnic group. The pre-independence era has witnessed the exploitation of women in and outside their home. The Gandhian period and even prior to that is marked by the philosophies of some very brilliant social reformers and thinkers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Swami Dayanand Saraswati and so on who strived endlessly to bring about a change in the condition of Indian women so that they become “better wives” and “better mothers”.

 Mahatma Gandhi on Women

Women Empowerment

Gandhi Ji, however, saw women not as ‘objects of reform’ but as ‘self-conscious objects’ and he included them among the ‘masses’ in a most natural way. Women participated in mass movements led by him and this made a big breakthrough in Indian women’s lives for times to come. The Mahatma said that women have been suppressed under custom and law for which man was responsible and in the shaping of which she had no hand. Regulation of social demeanor must be drafted by cooperative co-operation and consultation. Women have been taught to regard themselves as slaves of men. They must realize their full status and play their part as equals of men.

Women Empowerment

Women, according to Gandhi, are a personification of ‘ahimsa’ which means love and infinite capacity for suffering. In the words of Gandhi: “The women in India tore down the purdah and came forward to work for the nation. They saw the country demanded something more than their looking after their homes. They manufactured contraband salt; they picketed foreign cloth shops; etc. They marched to jails and they sustained lathi blows as few men did.”

Gandhi on Equality of Sexes

Gandhi strongly emphasized that there should be no inequality in the wages paid to men and women. He could very well foresee that the success of the Swadeshi movement was possible only if women spun yarn and weave cloth in large numbers. He felt that women should not feel any legal disability which is not suffered by men.

Women Empowerment

Women, said Gandhi, have to be taught that she has rights as well as duties, and, they have to learn the art of under control. According to Gandhi, a woman is the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacities. She thereby has the right to participate in the very minutest detail in the activities of man and has an equal right to freedom and liberty with him. But, she is entitled to a supreme place in her own “domain” or sphere of activity. Therefore both boys, as well as girls, should be educated but it is only the primary education for the two sexes that have much in common. As far as the higher education is concerned, important differences would exist. ”As nature has made men and women different, it is necessary to maintain a difference between the education of two. True, they are equal in life, but their functions differ. It is women’s right to rule the home. Man is the master outside. Gandhi, therefore, felt that there must be provision for separate arrangements for the education of girls after their attaining a certain age. They should be taught necessary domestic tasks. Hence, Gandhi always felt that while both are fundamentally one, it is also equally true that in the ‘form’ there is a vital difference between the two.

“I am uncompromising in the matter of woman’s rights. In my opinion, she should labor under no legal disability not suffered by man. I should treat daughters and sons on an equal footing of perfect equality.” – Mahatma Gandhi.”

Center Likely to Mandate NEET For Agri Courses

0

The latest notification released on academic front may come across as a cultural shock for all those who are planning to pursue Agriculture courses next year. Coming 2019, students will have to appear for NEET (National Entrance cum Eligibility Test) for availing admissions to Agricultural courses.

Currently, agri aspirants can obtain a seat on the basis of the marks secured by them in their Class XII examination. Starting next year, they might have to sit for NEET to qualify the same. There is a possibility that this could be the last year, for availing admission through class XII scores.

NEET 2018 has been in news for various controversies for the past few months. The examination is scheduled for May 6, 2018. Admit cards for NEET 2018 are likely to be out by the second week of April.

As per reports, this is not the first time, the center has made changes in the pattern. Recently, the center had decided to include Veterinary sciences along with medical and dental courses in the club of NEET. AYUSH courses have also been added under the purview of NEET. However, engineering courses are still at bay from the entrance examination.

Academicians on Sunday released the news about the Centre planning to make the NEET examination mandatory to seek admission for Agriculture courses starting 2019.

From when the mandate be put into effect?

In comparison to Medical Council of India (MCI), the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is only a suggestive body and doesn’t hold the right to pass a mandate but merely propose it to the Parliament. The parliament alone has the rights to pass it as a rule which is highly unlikely to happen in this academic year.

Currently, it has been proposed for students from Tamil Nadu. According to the statements given by the Vice Chancellor of Tamil Agricultural University, K Ramasamy, a total of 13 agricultural courses are enlisted as professional courses. Agricultural courses are offered by 14 constituent colleges and 24 affiliated colleges in the state. Amongst these, the center allocates 15% of seats in all the colleges through common entrance examination conducted by the Centre.

The mandate to include Agricultural courses in the purview of NEET exams is predicted to have an effect on multiple grounds. As per reports, the latest mandate by the center hasn’t gone well with parents and students of the state, who are still hoping the news to be false.

Rural education

Amongst others, it is the rural students who would be impinged by the mandate. After the mandate of making NEET compulsory for medical and dental courses, students had found solace in Agricultural courses. Also, a sudden surge of seats was witnessed last year for Agricultural courses, with more students rushing to take up the course.

Reduction in education for Girls

This mandate is also likely to affect the enrolment of girl population in pursuing higher education. As per statistics put forth by an academician, the current percentage of seats allotted for girls in the field of arts and science is 67%, 70% in medicine and 87% in Agriculture.

This percentage is likely to see some reduction post the mandate as parents would find themselves in trying position to spend so much money on their ward’s education. The cost of entrance examination and tutorials for the cracking it will supposedly put a great deal of pressure on parents, who want their children to pursue higher education.

Enrolment for Agricultural courses

Making NEET mandatory for agricultural courses is likely to effect the number of students enrolling for the same. As per records, Agricultural courses are the top preference by aspirants of Medical and IAS examinations. The number of enrolment is likely to see a drop in case the entrance tests are made compulsory.

However, the state is yet to receive final notification from the center on this matter. This was confirmed by the Principal Secretary of the government and agricultural production commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi. Currently, the same is just a proposal, a correspondence is pending from the central government.

Black Hole – “What happens in a black hole stays in a black hole!”

0
Black Hole

Astronomers spent much time analyzing how stars form and how they develop. One problem was to explain what happened to a massive star at the end of its life. In 1967, the term “black hole” was used to describe one type of object that is left when a massive star dies. Four years later, Cygnus X-1 was found, the first candidate for a black hole.

Detecting a Black Hole
The idea of a body so massive that even light could not escape was briefly proposed by the astronomical pioneer, John Michell. Black holes are based on this idea proposed by John Michell and are thus black in color. Astronomers are not able to detect them directly, but can “see” them because of the effect of gravity has on everything around them, such as gas from a nearby star. The boundary of the black hole is called event horizon. Material pulled in towards the hole is swirled around by the gravity, forming a disc, before crossing the horizon.

Accretion disc
This is the material that swirls around a black hole forming a rapidly spinning accretion disc. When this material gets pulled closer to the hole, it starts traveling faster and faster and starts getting very hot due to friction. Close to the hole, the material is so hot it emits X-rays before crossing the event horizon and disappearing forever.

Supermassive holes
Black HoleSome galaxies have very active centers that give out large amounts of energy. An object of powerful gravity, such as a supermassive black hole, could be the cause of the activity. This type of a hole would be somewhat a hundred million times more massive than the Sun.

Stellar Collapse
Massive stars might end up their lives in an explosion which is called a supernova. This explosion leaves behind a central core. If this central core’s mass gets more than that of three Suns, it becomes a black hole. Gravity forces the core to collapse. As the core shrinks, its gravity increases. At a certain point, it reaches a critical size, that of the event horizon.
Gravity increases at the core of the dying star shrinks.
Anything trying to escape the gravity must travel almost at the speed of light, as the core approaches the size of the event horizon. Once the core is smaller than the event horizon, not even light can escape. The core continues collapsing until it takes up virtually no space. The star is a singularity, a point mass of infinitely high density inside a black hole.

Inside a black hole
Black HoleSpace and time are highly distorted inside a black hole. Anyone ill-fated is likely enough to fall into one would be stretched to look like as a tortellini. This is due to the gravity pulled more on the feet than the head. An observer who is watching the person fall would also see time’s pace being very slow as the person fell towards the event horizon.

Roger Penrose
The English mathematician theorizes on the nature of space and time. He has shown that a massive collapsing star inevitably becomes a black hole and that all black holes have a singularity – a point, occupying virtually no space that contains the entire mass of a dead star.

“Black holes ain’t as black as they are painted. They are not the eternal prisons they were once thought. Things can get out of a black hole, both to the outside, and possibly, to another universe. So, if you feel you are in a black hole, don’t give up. There’s a way out.” – Stephen Hawking

10 things to avoid during job interviews

0

Getting a job or not depends upon an interview and sometimes, a series of them. Employers hold interviews to better know the applicant, whose profile was screened earlier during application process. An interview consists of both verbal and non-verbal communication between the prospective employer and jobseeker. Employers look for high degree academic qualifications bundled with required set of skills as well as great personality. A proper blend of the three ensures success.

Why errors during interviews are costly

Interviewers consider everything: education, skills, experience, attitude, personality, overall presentation among others, within a span of 10 to 30 minutes. Sometimes, a sole interviewer will quiz the jobseeker. In others, several officials from various departments of a company- human resources, administration and finance, department heads will conduct the interview. Regardless of who and how many persons conduct an interview, a jobseeker is screened thoroughly for eligibility. In an increasingly competitive world, employers are spoilt for choice: Meaning, they have multiple applications for a single post. They have free will to hire or disregard an applicant. Any mistakes during these few critical minutes can cost jobseeker a dream job and severely mar future career prospects.

Appearance matters

Wearing appropriate clothes is excellent and recommended. But overdressing leaves poor impression and kills job prospects. Most jobseekers go overdressed for interviews. Wearing ties, jackets, suit for an interview is always optional. It is not advisable to wear a blazer or suit for an interview during summer months. It makes you feel unduly warm and uncomfortable. At worst, it appears ludicrous to be attired in a dark suit when mercury levels are soaring. Ditto with ties for men: Unless well-versed with types of knots and can wear a tie yourself, do not bother to wear one. There are 18 different types of tie-knots. Wearing a tie with knot made by someone else looks extremely shabby and contributes towards a bad impression. Avoid dark clothes since they betray perspiration stains prominently.

Wearing fragrance and body deodorants

Nobody likes body odour. Employers frown at jobseekers who come loaded with body odour, regardless of the cause. Job applicants are at disadvantage here since they will have commuted long distances to arrive on time for the interview. They will most likely have used mass transit, rubbing shoulders with all and sundry. Body odours, however mild, get highlighted in a cool, air conditioned room. Jobseekers try to overcome the stench using strong fragrances and deodorants. The overall effect is horrible. Strong perfumes trigger allergies and are indicative of poor tastes. Instead, wearing fresh, cotton clothes that permit proper aeration of the body and prevent sweat accumulation are strongly recommended. Having a long shower or bath before heading for the interview is preferable. If allowed, select timings when climate outdoors will be cooler for commuting.

Carrying backpack, laptop bag

An unhealthy trend nowadays is carrying personal stuff in a backpack or laptop pack. Women carry handbags, duffels or knapsacks- which is understandable since they are essential dress accessories. Men carrying backpacks comes with inherent disadvantages for jobseekers during an interview. A backpack adds to some level of discomfort while commuting. Very often, backpacks are loaded with odours of stale food and other stuff carried regularly by the owner. Opening a backpack to hand over requested documents to the interviewer can invariably let off these smells, leaving an unsavoury taste with interviewers. Straps of bags leave undesirable creases on clothes. Poorly maintained backpacks betray how you care for stuff.

Wrong placement of mobile/ smart phone

Mobile handset or smart phone is essential survival tool nowadays. It is imperative to carry it anywhere, including for interviews. A mobile phone placed wrongly can mar prospects at interviews. Smart phones come loaded with apps that let off noisy alerts whenever somebody sends a message. Somebody may call you while being interviewed. Flashing lights come up on phones whenever there are alerts, regardless of their importance. Beeps, blips, tweets, sounds, buzzes, sound and lights serve to distract interviewers. Phones switched to silent mode tend to vibrate, also causing sound and taking away attention of both, interviewer and job seeker. It is best to switch off your mobile phone and keep it away in your trouser pocket. Ladies can consign it to their handbags. Smart phones also serve as indicators of financial status and sporting expensive or cheap ones can prove counterproductive.

Wasting an offered drink

This is a common mistake made by most jobseekers. Very often, large corporations, as part of corporate culture, offer tea, coffee or a soft drink to jobseekers. Sometimes, the intention is to relax a jobseeker before and during the interview. The free beverage may be offered while waiting turn to meet the interviewer or during the course of interview. Never refuse a drink offered during the interview, unless you have very genuine reasons. It can be considered rude and impolite. Always accept the drink with a thank you to the server. Holding the cup or glass indicates etiquette. Wasting the drink is tantamount to blasphemy: It indicates scant regard for money and resources- in this case, spent by the employer. If your drink is served in waiting area but unfinished when called for the interview- carry the cup with you.

Fidgeting, glancing around

This is another common mistake jobseekers make while awaiting turn in the waiting area of during an interview. An employer’s office will indubitably have several things that seek your attention. An accolade or honour won by your prospective employer deserves more than a mere glance. Get closer and study the exhibit. If you pick a magazine or newspaper, make sure you browse carefully through it rather than running through pages: this indicates short attention span and nervousness.

Avoiding use of washroom

Often jobseekers skip using washroom at the employer’s premises for vague fears or sheer shyness. Instead, they hold on till the urge to answer call of the nature becomes intensely unbearable. Such discomfort reflects on the face clearly and can be fatal for your job prospects. Instead, overcome this undue coyness, ask and head for the washroom. With some luck, a well maintained and equipped washroom will also allow you to give finishing touches to your appearance before meeting the interviewers. Often, the state of a washroom reflects workplace culture too.

Mishandling a business card

Never stuff a business card handed by the interviewer into your pocket or bag. It reflects haste and implies disrespect for the employer. Interviewers hand over business cards for several reasons: to observe your reaction, check how you treat it, see your eye for detail or simply to introduce themselves better. Interviewer handing a business card at the end of an interview points towards a positive outcome. Regardless of when it is handed, receive the business card with due respect, study what is mentioned for a few seconds and place it before you during the interview. Carry it out while leaving the room and keep in your pocket or bag later.

Befriending a receptionist, other staff

Attempt to get friendly or chatty with the receptionist, other staffis generally considered as unprofessional since you are wasting the company’s time and resource. You are there for an interview, not to socialize.  It is worthwhile to remember, reception or waiting areas can be under surveillance cameras that can be watched by the interviewer before or after an interview.

Complaining about anything

Complaining about anything and everything is innate human nature. Complaining about the weather, traffic snarls, delayed running of trains or just about anything is sacrilege at a job interview. Most things we complain about are beyond our control. It implies the inability to cope with stressful work and adverse situation at workplace. If drawn into a complaint, express it in form of a compliment.

More points to remember

A typical interview spans between 15 and 30 minutes. Interviewers are hard pressed for time since they gauge job seekers on various verbal and non-verbal parameters. A common mistake by most jobseekers is over-preparation. This includes getting more knowledge about a company than required for the interview. You are not required to chronicle the company’s history or know its financials like an auditor. Basic knowledge about the employer and the company’s activities is sufficient.

Grooming: the great traitor

The manner in which you speak and present yourself at an interview speaks volumes of your grooming. Faking etiquettes is impossible: your demeanour will inadvertently betray pretences at the first available opportunity. Mimicking a particular class or style looks ridiculous and will cost you the job. Worse, it can render you a laughing stock at the company, even if hired for skills. A cuss or expletive let off unmindfully is sufficient to give a clear indication of poor upbringing and social status.

Finally: Watch your mouth

It pays for employers to get you chatting. Remember, most interviewers are in dark themselves. You can read about some of the common questions that feature during HR interviews to learn tricks and tweaks to answer them. Questions aimed at getting you to chat are asked deliberately. A relaxed jobseeker is prone to doling out unsolicited information to the interviewer. Such information can include anything from personal likes and dislikes, political and religious leanings, financial standing, social status, family background. Innocuous information you part with can work against you during an interview.
