Something incredible about: The Dream Camp

0

Our world is a beautiful place to live in and there exists some truly amazing souls to make sure of it. Make a Difference has been working since more than 10 years now for not only the education but also the overall development of kids. One such project put together by MAD to take our children one step closer to their dreams which brings a smile on everyone who is a part of MAD family is THE DREAM CAMP.

Something incredible about: The Dream Camp

Make a Difference mobilizes the youth to ensure equitable outcomes for children. Presently the national Non-Government Organization impacts the lives of over 3,460 children in 67 shelters across 23 cities in India.

Happiness can never be pursued but once achieved is embraced for a life time. The camp which takes place over a course of 3 days is an unforgettable memory for everyone who attends it. When children and volunteers are asked what the best part of MAD is it isn’t surprising when a large number never fail to take the name of DREAM CAMP at the very first place.Something incredible about: The Dream Camp

The smiles, giggles, excitements, fear are all mixed feelings which the children have, while we are on the way to the venue. The creativity volunteers’ show at the time of planning is commendable. Some provide a badge to everyone to give an exciting starting; some give a ticket for the journey to the venue; as the fairy tale land arrives, the happiness of those kids who hardly get vacations cannot be measured.

The sessions in dream camp are carefully thought out and put into action keeping in mind the overall growth of the kids. The Beautiful You session help them understand how outer appearance is nothing as compared to inner beauty. This session not only makes them understand their qualities but also makes us realize what a precious part of the society is neglected by many of us just because of the outward appearance. The River of Life session helps them realize that no matter what problems they have faced in life, the river of life flows on. This is the most intense session in the whole DC where children share the darkest parts of life in a closed group to their mentors. These stories are truly touching and make our problems seem like a drop of water compared to their ocean of worries.

Children learn how they have survived them all and the river is always flowing while we learn how blessed we all are. The bond with children strengthens after this session. The Dream tree or bulls eye session is emphasized to help them make their own roadmap towards their dreams by allowing them to introspect and identify their strengths, weaknesses and what the
need to do to reach for the stars.

The DREAM CAMP is not only about sessions, the new food experience for the children where you can see how every bite can turn into a delight. The new sports experience where the adrenaline rush keeps them eager to learn more. The moments mentors have with children of their group, the shared secrets and the constant smiles are amazing. Everything is like a dream for these children who are termed less fortunate and a dream for the volunteers who get so much to learn and enjoy in these few days.Something incredible about: The Dream Camp

The last but not the least is the Gratitude session. Everyone writes for each other in which the outrageous bonds are sprinkled with the fairy dust. The loving letters of the mentors written to children and the beautiful love children show by writing lovely letters to team MAD makes it all worth it.Something incredible about: The Dream Camp

The goodbyes are hard and with teary eyes everyone bids farewell to the DREAM CAMP with a hope for the dream to continue next year.

Make a Difference has been doing ground-breaking work in the field of education for a long time but still many are not aware of the cause. So here is to all who feel like being a part of MAD after reading this article – YES WE ARE RECRUITING!!!!!!

For more details, visit www.makeadiff.in. Register on our website to be a part of the Awesomeness! Let us join hands and work to Make A Difference in the lives of those tiny tots. Because true goodness is achieved when we work not for ourselves, but for the betterment of others.

PSYCHOANALYTIC FEMINIST THEORY

1

Psychoanalysis is concerned with analysis of mind i.e. the psyche’s structure and its relation to the body, and use that as the basis for treating certain kinds of sickness. It is popularly known as “talking cure” and some of its central concepts are: penis envy, the Oedipus complex, the phallic symbol. As these terms suggest, psychoanalysis is closely associated with gender, sex, familial relations and the fact that their expression and construction are not always available to the conscious mind which are also central interest to feminism. Psychoanalytic and gender feminists believe “women’s way of acting is rooted deep in women’s psyche.”

PSYCHOANALYTIC FEMINIST THEORY

Sigmund Freud described psychoanalysis as a phenomenon of the 20th century, also acknowledging the works of the 19th century precursors. Freud together with his colleague Josef Breuer wrote Studies on Hysteria (1895) which is a collection of five case histories of women suffering from reminiscences and also explains the facts that women fears and phobias, hallucinations and physical symptoms ( such as amnesia, asthma, feeling cold, neck cramps, stammers etc) all turned out to have their origin in repressed memories. Breuer also admits that the symptoms disappeared once they had been given verbal utterance which later became a therapeutic technique. During his self-analysis, Freud established three principles: the unconscious part of mind, analysis of dreams and the relationship between unconscious and conscious thought processes. Later he divided this into the id (the central location of unstructured instincts), the ego (the realistic element) and the super-ego (the internalized parental function, moral, critical).

PSYCHOANALYTIC FEMINIST THEORY

Between 1893 and 1895 Freud developed his theory of the Oedipus complex and infantile sexuality. In the Oedipus complex, the small boy loves his mother and experience a jealous hatred of his father which is resolved by the castration complex i.e. the father steps in to forbid the boy access to his mother, on the pain of losing his organ, and the boy, in obeying, identifies with the father and the power he wields. Freud makes the little boy model for both the sexes and describes the little girl as his deficient version. In the girl’s case, according to Freud, she now loves her father and hates the betraying mother who has sent her into the world so insufficiently equipped. It is clear from these comments of Freud’s why Oedipus complex is problematic for feminist psychoanalysis, as it constructs women as the inferior ‘second sex and in addition to this Freud also ignores the social position of women he wrote about. However, Melanie Klein argues that the Oedipus complex occurs much earlier than Freud suggests and the infant’s drives focus not on the father and his anatomy but on the mother.

From 1953 the very influential French theorist and trained psychiatrist, Jaques Lacan inaugurated a “return to Freud” in his seminars and writings bringing structuralist and post structuralist theories of language to bear on Freud’s central concepts of the unconscious, the construction of gender etc. The biggest issue to feminist approaches to Lacan is the role of what he called phallus in the theory of language and his subject. Lacan pointed out that the distinction between penis and phallus is fundamental to Freud’s differentiation between biological and psychic reality. The phallus exists outside anatomical reality and is the signifier of the mother’s desire. He claims that this is a neutral third term, a signifier of lack. Feminists critics point out how it is hard to separate the phallus from the literal organ, the penis , if only because of verbal and visual coincidence and points out that his theory is non biological and non essentialist, as the feminine position is open to both men and women.

PSYCHOANALYTIC FEMINIST THEORY

Psychoanalytic feminist thought has also followed another route, i.e. the area of masquerade, or gender as a performative strategy. Joan Riviere in her essay discusses three case studies which have in common the fact that ‘women who wish for masculinity may put up a mask of womanliness to avert anxiety and the retribution feared from men’. Opponents of claims that the idea of masquerade is liberatory point to its political implications. The potential that masquerades offers is a deconstruction of the idea of biological determinism or the real women not yet disfigured by patriarchal social relations. Masquerade has also been used to not only analyse the female spectator but the very possibility of representation of the female body on screen.

Thus the future of psychoanalytic feminism seems very rich. As well as the ‘return to Klein’, signaled for instance by the establishment of Women’s Therapy Centre in London, psychoanalytic feminism underlies recent developments in lesbian theory, gender studies and queer theory.

Using Resources Strategically

0

Resources are very limited today and hence using them strategically is very important. Now these can be at micro level like in home management or at a very macro level say for a nation or country. Many scientists have worked in this field thus focusing upon optimum utilization. As per Richard D. Irwin, strategy is a match between what company can do within the universe of what it might do. It highlights organisation’s strength and weakness in view of internal environment & opportunities and threats for external environment.organisation’s strength and weakness in view of internal environment & opportunities and threats for external environment.

So what makes a resource valuable? It is nothing but a combination of three elements:

  • Scarcity
  • Demand
  • Appropriabilty

And thus value is created.

There are many strategic theories that one can consider of resources and their optimum utilization. Some of them are:

  • Porter’s Five Force Model: The structural forces of industry and the industry itself sets the design of what strategy to employ.
  • Core competencies: Skills and collective learning and thus holds that the roots of competitive advantage are within the organisation.
  • Resource based view (RBV): This depends on economic reasoning and sees importance of company specific resources

Using Resources Strategically

Further on, there are five tests of valuability for the resources. These are: Test Of Durability, Test of appropriability, Test of competitive superiority, Test of substitutability, Test of Inimitability. Managers should identify, analyse and hence try to make strategies keeping these in mind.

Here are a few points that you can consider while talking about resources and how they should be utilized.

Investing in Resources:

  • Corporate strategy – continual investment
  • Theory Of core competencies
  • Corporate office acts as guardian of “crown jewels”
  • Investing might become redundant hence caution must be taken.

Upgrading Resources:

  • Unavailability or imitated resources
  • Constant up gradation is the need of the hour
  • Approaches:
    • Constantly add new resources
    • Up gradation
    • Alternative forms

Leveraging Resources:

  • Diversification is required.
  • High rewards
  • Possibility of errors
  • Errors:
    • Overestimation of transferability
    • Entry barriers of industry
    • Generic resources

So basically this is the overall idea that one needs to use resources. You must note that the resources or whatever we currently have at our disposal will not last forever and hence appropriate steps need to be taken to use them wisely. A quote to remember in this regard is “We have not inherited the earth from our forefathers but inherited it from our children and hence resource optimization needs to be done”.

Using Resources Strategically

Resources need to be used in such a way that all the requirements of today are fulfilled and we don’t compromise with the needs of future. Let us all fight the extreme climate changes that we are facing by saving whatever is left. A combined effort can do wonders and that is what is required right now.

Why is Indian Steel Industry So Powerful?

0

The Indian steel industry has many global giants like TATA within it and thus gives enormous advantages to the country in the manufacturing sector. In the steel industry 70% share is commanded by the top five companies and rest are just the followers and price takers. The industry is quiet much concentrated and business houses compete on the following factors:

  • Quantum of production
  • Access to raw materials
  • Economies of scale
  • Cost leadership
  • Relations with suppliers and distributors etc…

Why is Indian Steel Industry So Powerful?

TATA Steels has been a brand in its work for always and this success can attributed to its capabilities to exploit its resources fully and hence gain competitive advantage by matching its business strengths with that of the industry attractiveness. Having said about industry attractiveness, it is vital for any business to understand the industry its working in act accordingly. Every industry has few key success factors which dictate the success probability. For the steel industry, the following have been identified:

  • Access to raw materials at low cost

: Iron ore ,coke and coal are the main raw materials that are required in steel industry , which during 2004-05 and 2007-08 saw a significant increase in costs. Hence players in market need to be having proper sources for these so as to least affected by the price hikes.

  • Technologically sound and advanced

: Disruptive technologies and new products write the success story in any industry and are very important. Players in the market should focus upon creating differentiated products.

  • Reach to markets and inputs

: This can be gained through having good relations with suppliers and distributors so as to have an easy access to the market and reach the customers more effectively.

  • Finances, sources and its cash generation and requirement:

The financial structure of a company is very important to succeed. This requires right debt to equity ratio (which ideally should not be more than 2).

  • Value proposition and value added:

Willingness to pay and the price charged plays an important role. A business house must be able to deliver the highest value to the customer.

  • Ideal product mix
  • Exports
  • Management system

: Managerial efficiency, labour utilization, proper integration of activities is a must for succeeding.

A problem that the industry faces is related to coal. Coal, which is one of the most important elements in the production of steel is a depleting resource and required extensively. Also, there has been an upward trend of coal prices in the recent year which becomes an issue. To be abreast with new technologies and have disruptive ways is also important to stay ahead in competition. The international markets are also giving high competition to the domestic markets. Also, government has made many laws and statuary rules to be followed by various business houses depending upon the industry they are working in. This involves a greater part of attention and focus towards the employee benefits and health aspects, thereby focusing on the most important factor of production-human work force.
