story of saviour

His hands shivered, cold yet sweaty, he pressed the trigger of the gun at the person lying in front of him. The blood that spread on the floor was a shade darker than his bloodshot eyes. The guy lost his breathing senses and soon his body turned cold and pale.

One hour ago…

Please doctor help me, I need to be fine, and I need to complete my duties for my nation.” His shirt was turned red, bleeding profusely he had reached to the hospital. “You have to remove this bullet, it will spread poison in my body. Do something I cannot die without completing my job.”

The doctor called for the ward boy and prepared to take the patient immediately to the operation theatre. But as soon as the doctor entered the operation theatre ready to perform a surgery, he saw something that made him go weak on his knees. Big rifle, granite bombs and bullet chains were spread out. The guy had changed his cloth and now was wearing a crisp black jacket, no blood no injury totally fit and healthy. The timid ward boy seemed to be semi-conscious by glaring at the gun placed on his head, his fragile body ready to give up. The Doctor stood glued on his place not knowing what was happening.

Aye you smart ass, stop staring and move, better do as I say or I will turn your hospital into a graveyard,” the terrorist thundered. Before the doctor could react, he felt a tap on his back. Turning around he saw two other men with same kind of clothes, crisp black jackets. The devilish looks on their face were clearly showing their murderous intentions. They pushed him inside and went to meet the one who had arrived earlier. Fear crept in that doctor who was living this nightmare, unaware of what the next moment would be…will he be breathing or not. The terrorists murmured something among themselves, and the two of them taking a rifle each went out of the room.

For the next few minutes, there was a creepy silence in the room but the doctor could hear screams and gunshots outside, just praying that no one would be killed he sat on the floor checking out on the ward boy who still looked dazed. The one who was the guarding them inside the room looked like a boy not more than twenty years of age. His innocent face was much of a contrast to the weapon he was holding. Realization slowing dawned to him that may today would be the last day of his existence may be the breath was his last one. The countdown had begun and he looked twirled in his thoughts, remembering his family, his lovely wife his seven year old daughter who must be waiting for her papa. Another loud noise broke the doctor’s string, this familiar siren brought a sense of relief on his face, and the Police force had succeeded to secure the perimeter. The boy started muttering and sweating all over, fear was now visible on his face. Without the other two of his men he felt as helpless as a lost child in the crowd. Shaking himself to the present, the doctor tried to get up and get hold of his own self. Again those firings started, screams broke in his ears, but this time there was a hope that no innocent soul would be dying as the saviours were here.

The terrorist started pacing around and looking for a place to run out but only if he knew there was no running away now, either death or surrender. Looking at the grim smile on doctor’s face his face turned red in anger, trying to put him down and to tell him that he still had power over him he aimed on the ward boy. The poor body fell on the floor, lifeless, draped in blood. An innocent person had lost his life but there was nothing to undo now, being a doctor, this clichéd him.

Pushing aside the body, the terrorist merged towards the doctor to pin him down as well. He knew he had to be a saviour for his own life today. Showing some presence of mind and gathering all the courage he had, the doctor pulled down the lamp hanging over the bed and threw it in the direction of terrorist. By this sudden attack he lost control over his body and fell down, the gun rolled out from his hand towards the doctor’s direction. The one who had taken Doctor’s Oath to save every human being while holding his degree, gave away, for the Nation’s Pledge he had taken every day in the school.

Ranting Of An Introvert

4
Introvert

It’s a crucial phase of my life, as I see my seniors graduate and others still sitting for placements. I realise it will be me in a year. Struggling to get a job, people assessing you on the basis of your marks in tests where some could have cheated or you could have not been feeling well to give your hundred per cent, or they judge you on your ability to speak and explain yourself in a tense atmosphere.

No, it doesn’t sound that bad for extroverts and the ones with full faith in themselves. The situation is a bit scary for Introverts like me though, who have a lot to say but are selective about the people they express it to. We are the underdogs and the hard workers, the ones too caught up in their own world to bother others. So strong, yet mild to the outside world.

the-nerdy-introvertThe chaos going inside our minds could knock the walls of every challenge in this world yet we are bound by our own fears, insecurities and the relationships that make us who we are. We are empathisers, helpers and supporters. We care for humans and animals alike yet we are the ones termed as boring or cold or just indifferent. But we care much more than you realise and much more we let on. We just choose to not be verbal about our feelings lest our protective walls come down.

No, it doesn’t limit our capabilities in any way, it is what enhances us. The quiet nights spent deliberating and dreaming rather than chatting away our time on various social networks (due to lack of many friends mainly). We may be alone but we are not lonely. We enjoy our own company. Yes we sometimes feel the lack of a big group hanging out but deep down we know the selective friends we have are the ones who will be there in the time of need.

proud-to-be-an-introvertYes we would rather curl up on the bed and read a book than go to a party, but on the rare occasions we do, we become the life of the party. No we are never the centre of attention and we don’t want it to be that way. Attention makes us uneasy.

If you vaguely know someone who seems too full of themselves and far-fetched just because they don’t talk to anyone, go ahead , make a move and talk to them, maybe you’ll find a cool friend worth keeping for life. We aren’t all serious and broody; we might actually be cooler than you make us to be. We love humour as much as you do, just not the racist, sexist or offending kinds. We know the line between humour and an insult.

Also, just because we don’t put up a fight on every small issue or are always available whenever you are in trouble, do not take us for granted. We do not fight because we try to understand things from the other person’s perspective and value them far too much to keep all our work aside to help them out.

We introverts are just one of the many underappreciated facets in this world, and nevertheless I’m still proud to be an Introvert, because it has taught me to love my own company, take myself out on dates and still care for others as deeply as I would for my own.

IIT Madras is not just a college

Life as a school student and as a college student are two very different things. I had a feeling that what makes the IITs special would be the placements and the quality of teaching. I think I can vouch that there is much more to IITs than just education based on my observations here at IIT Madras.

Forest in IIT Madras

forest IIT MADRASThe campus if filled with greenery and it is literally a few degrees cooler inside. If you are not a fan of plants, the animals here might amuse you. You might know that we have deer, black bucks and monkeys roaming around. But we also have shy wild boars and foxes (or wolves, not sure) that rarely come out of the thick forest. We have swamps and inaccessible areas inside the campus that might give you a cheap adventure if you are brave enough. The students have the sense of responsibility and avoid littering within the campus. Almost all undergrads use bicycles for travel.

Industry in IIT Madras

workshopIIT undertakes many projects from various companies because we have many facilities at a single place. Our campus has the fastest supercomputing facility in the state. Many faculties here undertake a project and use the help of research scholars for testing and optimization. Project proposals are usually prepared by the IIT faculty and forwarded to interested organizations, based on the nature of their research and their interest to fund such projects. Testing for the metro rail was also done here in the structural engineering department. We have a central workshop with welding, machining (various), carpentry, composites layup, carpentry and also foundry (very rare) facilities. Any conventional student project can be completely finished inside the campus with no necessity to contact workshops outside. IIT Research Park is a place where many of the university’s start-ups have their company.

  • Hangout spot and Playground  in IIT Madras

IIT MadrasOur campus has many spots for a group of friends to hangout. We have a lawn in front of the two floored Himalaya (No, it is not covered with snow, Himalaya is the name of our mess.). Every hostel has a TV room and a garden. When it comes to playgrounds, we have the whole lot – basketball, football, volleyball, hockey, tennis, squash, badminton (even ball badminton): you name it, we have it. We also have a skating ground and a well maintained swimming pool. The newly built stadium is an apt place for morning walks or jogs. Apart from this, we also have a playground in almost all hostels. Many hostels have a volleyball court, cricket nets and a badminton court too. Hostels have either a Table tennis table or a foosball table.

  • A city within a city

I hope many would agree with me if I call IIT madras as an independent enclosure. This is because we have everything we need inside the campus. We have many canteens, eateries and juice shops (more than 10). Also we have gurunath stores where we get stationary and day to day needs. We also have  cycle repair shops, an electronics store, a barber shop, an atm and a departmental store. Who needs to go to ibaco when we have 10 different flavours of icecream in our canteens? And did you know, there is an open air theatre inside the campus, where they screen movies every weekend. :O

So if you are seriously preparing for JEE ,convince yourself that you are not doing it for your far future where you get a good life after graduating, but for the college life that you get here which will make you not want to graduate.
Please do comment your experiences at your respective colleges if you wish to, and contact me if you want to know further.

Do What You Love

0
love what you do

All of us must have had some crazy dreams during childhood, and then suddenly we grew up and got trapped in the fast-paced roller-coaster ride of our lives. Every action was reinforced by motivation to achieve certain grades or degrees. And eventually came our responsibilities towards our families. Amidst all this and the chaos of life, we gave up those fantastic dreams of ours.

There is no doubt that the real purpose of every human being is not to gather material symbols of achievement but to satisfy her soul. But all we do is strive to fit into the schemas of perfect subjects, hobbies or occupations created by society by killing our own desires. We see ourselves as manifestations of society but we don’t see that the society, whether its rigid or not is our own reflection.

The world begins with us. It comprises of  our actions, thoughts and desires. That is whatever makes it is our actions and the thought attached to it. If our thoughts aren’t congruent with our actions then we cannot enjoy what we are doing and we usually don’t up being fruitful to ourselves and the society.

A very common issue in India, for instance is that many students are often forced to take up science as it is THE subject which could promise them a profession which is more stable and meaningful than what Humanities would offer(a misconception).

It is not just a matter of academic choice but also about choosing ones interests in other areas such as dance, music, art etc. It is always that some things are thought of as being lower in heirarchy of occupation than others.

At some point of time in life we all regret not doing what we wanted to. This happens especially when we encounter failures in life. Some of us often try to impose our ambitions onto the coming generation again creating a chain of social expections. Life becomes monotonous and unproductive for those who don’t love what they do.

It is thus very crucial to indulge in our interests that we desire. Doing something we love instills positivity in us. Even if failure comes our way, there is always motivation to improve and overcome. It also relatively easy to be proficient and professional in ones own area of interest. A motivated individual is always satisfied and is also fruitful and productive for the society. It makes her or him come alive and the world needs people who have come alive.

However, times are changing and the needs of individuals are better understood now than they were earlier but it is one reminder one must always be reminded of.

It would be perfect to end it with a positive note by Steve Jobs: “The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it, keep looking. Don’t settle.”

10 most dangerous snakes in the world

0
snake

Not many animals knock as muchear into people as snakes do. Although the contingency of running into a venomous snake, much less being bitten and dying from its toxin, are diminutive compared to dying from cancer, heart disease, or a road accident, this seemingly absurd fear remains very genuine for many people. This abnormal fear of snakes is called Ophidiophobia. The list below is an overview of the snakes that posit a significant health risk to humans, through snakebites or other physical trauma.

10. Rattle Snake

The Rattlesnake is easily attributable by the tell tale rattle on the end of its tail. They are the members of the Pit Viper family, and are capable of striking at up to 2/3rd their body length. The juveniles are considered more dangerous than adults, due to their inability to control the amount of venom injected. Most of the species have hemotoxic venom which destroys tissue, degenerates organs and causes disrupted blood clotting. Difficulties in breathing, paralysis, salivating and massive hemorrhage are also common symptoms. A rattlesnake bite is on all accounts a fatal injury. However, antivenin, when applied in time, decreases the death rate to less than 4%.

9. Death Adder

The Death Adder is found in Australia and New Guinea. They actually poach and kill other snakes via ambuscade. They look quite similar to vipers as they have triangular shaped heads and short, squat bodiesIts untreated bite is one of the most dangerous in the world as the venom is a neurotoxin. A bite causes paralysis and can lead to death within 6 hours, due to respiratory failure. With the swiftest strike in the world, a Death Adder can go from strike position to striking and back again within 0.13 of a second.

8. Viper

Vipers are found across the globe, but the most venomous is the Saw Scaled Viper and the Chain Viper, found in the Middle East and Central Asia, particularly India, China and South East Asia. Vipers are quick tempered and generally nocturnal. There is a descent in blood pressure and the heart rate falls. Blisters occur at the site of the bite, and gradually develop along the affected limb in severe cases. Necrosis is usually superficial but may be severe in extreme cases. They have pit organs which give them a form of binocular vision that aids them to strike with great precision. Death from respiratory or cardiac failure may occur 1 to 14 days after-bite, or even later.

7. Philippine Cobra

The Philippine Cobra is an exception amongst the other cobras. Its venom is the deadliest of all the Cobra species and they are gifted of spitting it up to 3 metres. It’s bite can cause death from paralysis within 30 minutes. The venom alters cardiac and respiratory function, and can result in neurotoxicity. The bite causes only minimal tissue damage.

7. Tiger Snake

Found in Australia, the Tiger snake has dynamic neuro toxic venom. Symptoms can include localized pain in the foot and neck region, tingling, numbness and sweating, followed by an expeditious onset of breathing difficulties and paralysis. The Tiger snake generally flees if encountered, but can become aggressive when cornered. It strikes with impeccable accuracy. The tiger snake produces live young instead of laying eggs. After mating in spring, the female produces 20-30 babies in late summer.

6. Black Mamba

The formidable Black Mamba is found throughout many parts of the African continent. They are known to be highly aggressive, and strike with deadly precision. They are the fastest and the deadliest land snake in the world, capable of reaching speeds of up to 20km/h. A single bite is capable of blood shedding 10-25 adults. Black mambas hunt during the daytime and go back to their places every night to sleep. The victim undergoes a tingling sensation in the mouth and extremities, double vision, tunnel vision, severe confusion, fever, excessive salivation and lack of muscle control. Without antivenin, the mortality rate is nearly 100%.

4. Taipan snake

Taipan, native to Australia, is strong enough to carnage up to 12,000 guinea pigs. The venom clots the victim’s blood, blocking arteries or veins. It is highly neurotoxic. Prior the advent of an antivenin, there are no known survivors of a Taipan bite, and cessation typically occurs within an hour. Even with fruitful administration of antivenin, most victims will have an extensive stay in intensive care.

3. Blue Krait

The Blue Krait is, by far, the most deadly of this species. Found throughout South East Asia and Indonesia, 50% of its bites are mortal, even with the administration of antivenin. Although it is called a Blue Krait, the snake isn’t actually Blue.  It has a white body with broad black bands across it. Sometimes there are some yellow patches on it too.  The head has completely dark shade. They are nocturnal and more aggressive under the cover of darkness. Overall they are timid and will attempt to camouflage rather than fight. The venom is a neurotoxin, 16 times more potent than that of a Cobra. Before the advent of antivenin, the fatality rate was as massive as 85%. Even if antivenin is administered in time, you are far from assured survival. Death usually occurs within 6-12 hours of a Krait bite.

2. Eastern Brown snake

1/14,000 of an ounce of its venom is enough to kill an adult human. Unfortunately, its preferred habitat is along the major population centres of Australia. It is rapid and can be aggressive under certain circumstances. Even juveniles can slay a human. The venom contains both neurotoxins and blood coagulants. They react only to movement, so stand still if you ever encounter one in the wild. However it has a very useful role in a farmer’s life as it helps control the numbers of rodent pests.

1. Inland Taipan

The sub-specie Inland Taipan deserves a mark of its own. It has the most toxic venom of any land snake in the world. The maximum produce recorded for one bite is 110mg, enough to kill about 100 humans, or 250,000 mice! Favourably, the Inland Taipan is not aggressive and is seldom come across by humans in the wild. No casualties have ever been documented, though it could potentially kill an adult human within 45 minutes.

Now you know the most dangerous snakes in the world. Some are easy to avoid while others may sneak up on you even in the middle of a bustling city. Some snakes are dangerous because of the ferocity of their attacks, others because of how widespread they are, and some because their toxins are deadly. The majority are not aggressive, and will steer clear of you if you steer clear of them.

The nerdy introvert

2
Introvert

“Don’t stare at me this way, who are you to judge me. I’m not shy okay it is just that I don’t want to entertain this melodrama.” His own image stared blankly at him from the mirror of his room. Society called him introvert he called himself smart. This was just the difference of perception, mind set and choices. Don’t you remember that silent kid in your school, or that college nerd? No?  Then that person whom you met on your train journey, who didn’t even say a proper hi to you. Yes now you must be frowning on how rude some people can be, no they weren’t rude they just like to keep it to themselves.

introvertArnav had been silent for most of his life but his thoughts had wandered a long way, wondering why people voiced their opinions without giving it a second thought. He had been a calculative person, for most of his life. But tomorrow it had to be different, he had his interview. The dream job was just an interview away and he at any cost had to crack it. But ‘how’ was the question…he had been rejected by two companies already due to improper communication skills and his introvert nature. But tomorrow he couldn’t afford this, he was going to grab this opportunity.

Since last two hours he had been trying to practise the mocks but would stop abruptly due to loss of words. He was frustrated, trying to question his own existence. Had he been leading a wrong life all these years, was he not capable enough to pass a job interview. Then what was the use of those ranks and highest grades in the class. It felt as if they were shouting back at him that it would all go In vain because you are a face with zipped mouth. But he was not; he had always been a good listener, not a loser. This was his only opportunity to prove that a loud mind is no less that those who have loud voices.

“So Mr Gupta, why should we hire you?” The interviewer had a grim face, though he was already impressed by Arnav’s grades he had to put up some general questions to test this boy.

His hands were cold and sweaty, trying to search for some vocabulary he finally got his voice, “Sir, I’m an eight point grader that completely fits your criteria. Also I’ve managed to complete projects within the given deadline, which shows I can very well work under timely pressure.”

The interviewer liked his easy going yet confident attitude but still he decided to play the villain. You would understand this scenario if you ever have been to an interview, the questionnaire is never ending from their side until they scare the shit out. He asked him some technical and logical questions that Arnav solved with ease. After all he was stud in quantitative and logics. With a big smile and erect stature he left the cabin and joined the candidates waiting for the results.

“Mr Arnav Gupta, congratulations you have been selected to join our firm as a graduate trainee

Arnav was on cloud seven, but suddenly he felt a jab on his back…he started falling down and hit a big stone. That jerk of his body woke him up of his deep slumber. Rubbing his face and yawning he tried to clear the dirt of his eyes. He had again fallen asleep on his study table like every night reading some classic or fiction, but today it was his dream company’s appointment letter on his name.
