The sweet familiarity of our homes in the roots of our motherland brings us closer to what we really are and differentiates us from what we have become to gain materialistic assets. There is one such asset which refreshes our memory as well as our taste buds whenever we think of our motherland that is Sarson ka saag which has originated from Punjab, the land of five rivers.

Sarson ka Saag is basically luscious green gravy served with a dollop of desi ghee and makki ki roti.

It is one of the most famous dishes of Punjab. Winter is the time when vegetable markets are loaded with lush green leafy vegetables. That’s why sarson ka saag is the sought after gem dish and quite simple to make, says Vikram Arora, Executive Sous Chef at Hotel Four Seasons, Mumbai.

Mustard leaves have a very distinct & little bitter taste, which goes away after cooking to a certain extent. It also possesses some sweetness which mellows down after cooking is done, so to balance out the taste, we add makai ka atta and sometimes little jaggery. Sarson ka saag tastes best with makki ki roti, homemade white butter, and jiggery, traditionally saag used to be cooked in an earthen ware pot with charcoal underneath, continues Chef Vikram.

Here are some tips and tricks one should keep in mind while preparing sarson ka saag

Why Chandra Nandni Lost a Dedicated Viewer

0

Ever since I watched Chandra Nandni’s promo in mid September, I had been waiting with bated breath for 10th October 2016 for the series to air. The series is produced by Ekta Kapoor and the characters of Chandragupta Maurya and Nandni are excellently portayed by Rajat Tokas and Shweta Basu. Unfortunately, outstanding actors and expensive sets are not a substitute for excellent content. Fortunately for me, I stopped watching the drama and discovered other series(not Indian of course!) to entertain myself but Chandra Nandni lost a dedicated viewer (if at all they care!).

Some of the reasons why Chandra Nandni’s plot has lost steam are:

1. Similarity with the Jodha Akbar series

Though the plot may/may not bear a striking resemblance with the real-life Chandra/Nandni, it is surely greatly inspired by  another historical drama series- Jodha Akbar which was aired on Zee Entertainment Enterprises. This makes the plot insipid , monotonous and predictable. Some strikingly similar excerpts from the two serials are:

  • The lead couple in both series get married due to political reasons
  • There is great animosity (ghruna) between husband and wife from day one
  • Jodha begum had raised her dagger on Emperor Akbar for self-defence on their first night and Nandni raised her sword to assassinate Chandra on their first night
  • Akbar claimed that he had no heart and Chandra follows suit
  • The chief queens Rukaiyya begum and Helena from Jodha Akbar and Chandra Nandni respectively endlessly scheme against the female protagonists and apply insult to injury wherever possible
  • Salima begum, Akbar’s second chief queen and queen Durdhara, Emperor Chandragupta’s second wife constantly try to improve relations between the lead couple
  • Mariam Makhani and Rajmata are very impressed by their respective daughters-in-law and consider them as their daughters
  • Adham Khan, a close relative of Akbar plots to usurp the throne and so does Malayaketu, Chandragupta’s brother-in-law
  • Akbar’s brother-in-law Sharifuddin lusts after Jodha begum and so does Chandra’s brother-in-law Malayaketu
  • The emperors hate their ‘beloved’ queens and yet find excuses to spend most of their time with them
  • Both of them command their ‘beloved’ queens to give them a bath before granting their request
  • They feel a sense of accomplishment by humiliating their ‘beloved’ queens

2. Irrational character sketches of the lead actors

    Character Sketch of Chandra:

  • Chandra seldom keeps court hearings and when he does, the prime accused is Nandni and her family who are blamed for everything wrong that happens in the palace
  • He is overinvolved in the affairs of his wives rather than the citizens of Magadha
  • He disrobed Nandni to check whether she has any weapons on her
  • Chandra tortures Nandni because his mother was tortured by  Nanda, Nandni’s father who had imprisoned her
  • He is very suspicious about Nandni’s actions and doubts that she has affairs with other men
  • He always justifies his act of killing Nandni’s brothers to avenge his acharya, Chanakya’s insult in Nanda’s court

Character Sketch of Nandni:

  • Nandni loves her father Nanda blindly and can go to any extent to please him. She flares up when people speak about the ruthlessness of Nanda, willingly agrees to marry her molester Malayaketu and assassinate Chandragupta- the Emperor of Magadha.
  • She always admits to having committed a crime without any resistance when she is tried in Chandra’s court so that he sentences her to death as she feels that she is already dead after the death of her father at the hands of her husband.
  • Nandni is portrayed as a warrior princess though she has never fought a single war.

3. Both the characters are very impulsive and easily influenced by others’ views.

4. Most of the episode’s air time is wasted in contemplating about the excerpts of the preceding episodes.

You can skip watching the series for a week and when you come back, you will still understand the plot without watching any of the episodes you missed.

5. Plots are highly predictable, muddled and have abrupt conclusions.

So if you have already watched Jodha Akbar, you can pretty well make a guess how Chandra and Nandni will end up falling in love(no brownie points here). If you are indeed fascinated by the Mauryan Empire ,there is a lot of literature available on the Internet which sheds light on the life and achievements of Chandragupta Maurya rather than watching this fictive series.

BIGGEST BOX OFFICE FLOPS OF 2016

0

In 2016 we have the soul sucking sex comedies, Kya Kool Hai Ham 3, Mastizade and Great Grand Masti. We also saw Love Games which was going for deliciously perverse but was just unintentionally comic. Nothing can match these movies for sheer awfulness. But you do not need me to tell you that.. Instead, let us talk about the year’s biggest disappointments of BOX OFFICE. Films that came with expectations and then failed to deliver. These for me were the epic downers of the year.

5) Rock On 2

Eight years ago we fell in love with a rag-tag rock band named magic with Adi, Joe and KD or killer drummer. I was excited to see these characters back on screen but Rock On 2 was a damp squib. The sequel was not actively bad but it was just so bland that it became impossible to care. Debutante director Shujaat Saudagar was hobbled by the convoluted script by Abhishek Kapoor and Pawali Chaudhari. The action moved between Mumbai and Meghalaya. The landscapes were stunning but the logic was limp. And even though composers Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy created few high notes, the sound track was not the patch on the original, There just was not enough magic here.

4) Flying Jatt

The film presented what is probably the world’s first sikh superhero in film. A man whose costume is stitched by his mom, and in between feats of courage he needs to stop at sabzi mandi to pickup lauki for mamma. This could have been a lot of fun but director and writer Remo D’Souza made an insufferable film. The biggest offender was WWE wrestler Nathan Jones, with his patent dialogue “I have a black soul”, rooh meri kali hai. It was utterly exhausting.

3) Mirzaya

Mirzaya was a miracle of craft and technique. The cinematography by Pawel Dyllus was breathtaking. The visual effects production design and costumes were striking and the music by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy was memorable. Every frame was painstakingly constructed. But the story and characters were so inert that the film never came to life. Despite the obvious hard work that was poured into the project, Mirzaya remained a beautiful lifeless manniquin of BOX OFFICE.

2) Baar-Baar Dekho

This movie was a mistifying experience. It started with a lovely montage of a grand romance with a chartbursting song Kaala Chashma. The problem was everything in between. The film was essentially the cinematic equivalent of a hallmark Card with all these characters imparting life lessons. So wise pandit says ‘badi badi baato par nahi choti baato par dhyaan do’. And a sagely professor of mathematics declared ‘ balance ke begair koi equation perfect nahi hoti.‘ Can you take any film seriously in which Sidharth Malhotra is a professor of Vedic mathematics? Despite the gloss and beauty, this film remained desperately flawed. It was a slog to sit through it even once.

1)  Mohen Jodaro

I am sure that the director Ashutosh Gwariker started Mohen Jodaro with a grand vision. A sort of Amar Chitrakatha meets Three hundred meets Bahubali. The film had talent and sweat and skill. And it was heart-breaking to see this labour of love turned into an unintentional comedy. The head dresses that the characters were wearing made it impossible to focus on the narratives. The evil pradhan of Mohen Jidaro wore this gigantic one with horns. ‘Chaani’ the leading lady was partial to this ridiculous feathered contraption. And even the regular citizens seemed weighed down by all that weights on their heads. The film was destroyed between been bewildering and just bad. Even the industrial sincerity of Hritikh Roshan could not save it from an unmitigated disaster of BOX OFFICE.

Diary of a Broken Heart

0

I am the silence which is always broken by you, again and again, every time. Why do you do this? I hate you. I didn’t do anything then why? I want you to say me that you miss me. I always do so much for you, but in return, I don’t get what I deserve, no respect and no love. You are a wrong choice, I agree. I don’t have self-control and I always message you that’s why you always give me such tantrums. I thought that love will change my life, yeah it got changed but now it is not more than a hell. Every time I take a breath, I feel you. In my every dream, I see you. This is obsession or love, I don’t know. All I know is that I want you, I need you. I am waiting for your call in which you will say, ” oyeee so sorry cutaa”. But, I don’t think that I will get a call like this from you. I want us back. I miss you. I really do. I always spend time seeing your last seen. Why the hell all these fights are going on. What is happening to us? Why can’t we get together again? Why can’t we smile and start again? Why can’t we just stop and love again? I want a person who cares and love me just like I do. I know that you have no longer interest in me oops you never had, I guess. On that day when on Mahabalipuram beach you expressed all your feelings that how you are really afraid to lose me then, I really felt for you and I started to think that no, he also loves me but you always prove me wrong. Can’t you love me more, can’t you show some more interest in me? I am full of questions but no one is there to answer them. Otherwise, if you don’t feel such things then why can’t you leave me? Just leave me and finish this story. I seriously hate it. I want to feel that I am also important in your life. I love you, I always want to do but I want you to love me, to treat me well. That’s all I want from you. I don’t need your much time also; the just small amount of love is sufficient. If something else is going on in your life, if in case you are fed up with me or something else then simply say it to me. I will go back but don’t play with my feelings, please. I don’t want all this mess. I am a simple girl whose ambitions are crushed under your feet, I am not a crybaby too. I cry because I really get hurt. Hope you understand the pain one day when someone whom you will love treats you like this. I feel like breaking up with you permanently. I don’t know why I am behaving like this? What is happening to me? Why am I going through this? Why am I not enough strong to handle the pain? I don’t know how to overcome you. I want to hate you, I want to completely erase you from my memory. I want to forget that moment when I first met you and how I fell in love with you without even meeting you. Our deep and long conversations developed an instinct and your beautiful aroma wrapped me with this beautiful feeling. I remember our to-do list which we made to come closer and it was very crazy and cute. Eating maggi from the same plate was at first position in our list. Our love was so innocent and then the tables turned as nothing lasts forever. All the promises of staying together faded away. You cheated me too with your childhood love. I was completely broke. I cried and sobbed as the rainbow of my life vanished. You treated me so harshly but then also like a fool I accepted your apology and came back to you again as you promised me that you won’t do this again. But you didn’t change rather our love changed and it just became one sided love. Am I the only one who still wants us back? You again killed my inner soul. As only one class can be in common between us as we are from different branches but for that class too you said no. Our that particular class is adjacent to each other’s class. What do you want? You want me to face you daily and to kill myself again and again by seeing you in another class? How will I stop my heart from beating so heavily when I will see you smiling? How will I console myself? Yesterday, I saw you twice in the college but none of us tried to talk to each other. I thought that it’s God’s sign because it never used to happen before. That’s why I killed my ego and moved first step toward you by trying to have a chat with you on WhatsApp but you clearly said that you are happy without me and enjoying your life like this. Now, what can I do? Do I need to become a machine so that I lose all my feelings and then no can break my heart because it’s already broken? Is there no value of trust and love in our society? Why is everyone so selfish? Your one smile always breaks my determination to stay away from you. Leave all this, moto now it’s over. I will become strong so that you won’t come again and will break me as always. Everyone has wings to fly but we just need to realize our potential and just leave everything on God. Flying like a free bird who is away from all these games of feelings is my motto now. I will love myself more and will just lose myself in the new world of dreams. I will start a new life again.

Our regular life pushes us to change our behavior, change our thinking and mature with time to deal with everyday situations. Sometimes it goes to such an extent that you feel lost. It is important that along with adapting to change one must be able to stay in touch with inner self.

We might have the perfect family, friends and if lucky the perfect one but life does not guarantee that they will be there to help you in difficult situations and it is you who has to take tough decisions.

So able to hear yourself is a must.

Here are 5 things you can do to be in touch with yourself. These are simple and can be adapted to our day to day life.

Talking to yourself:

talking into mirror

This might sound crazy but yes talking to yourself when you are alone will help you in bringing clarity of plan that you are working on. It helps you in raising up your own moral in case if you don’t have anyone around. It also reduces the amount of dependency on others to maintain our esteem.

Try doing this in front of a mirror before a tough situation or anytime you are feeling low.

It might feel awkward, weird but doing it does help in relaxing and being with yourself.

Writing a Diary:

You must have heard this suggestion plenty of times but putting your thoughts and feeling into something could help you let go all the bottled up emotions. Going through them will help you know your thought process and how to improve it. Not a big fan of writing then you can make video blogs. Some day you could have a good laugh on going through them.

Going for long walks:

walking

Long walks will help you calm down and listen to yourself more. A walk in the garden or lanes for 45 minutes will release endorphins, the happiness chemical. Try trekking or cycling closets nature if possible. Watching nature will make you happy in mysterious ways.

Maintaining a hobby:

In this age of technology, the first thing a person does on finding few free minutes would be watching some show or be on social media. It does help in relaxing as we assume. It mutes our head. So instead of sticking with technology all the time try simple hobbies like knitting, coin collection, painting. Now you don’t have to be a Picasso to make successful portraits but drawing, using colors as you feel like gives you a sense of power and authority which you might be craving. You can also try cooking new recipes. It also proves to be therapeutic.

Asking Why?

asking why in life

When we used to be kids we always had why in our head. Why is this like this? Why is the color of sky blue? Why do only coconuts have water in them? and so on. We learned some answers we forgot remaining questions. We stopped questioning and satisfied our question of why with this is supposed to be like this. Let us start questioning ourselves more. It will help us realise what kind of person we have turned out to be and is it a good one or bad. It will not only help us in finding answers about ourselves but also motivate us in working for a better society. Like it will motivate you to vote so that you can have better roads and infrastructure. It could help you stand up for someone who is being treated wrongly.

You don’t get to live a moment again but you can prepare yourself to not repeat the same behavior in a similar situation.

In this fast pacing world where physical and mental health is competing to bring a person down you can keep them at bay by being sane and being you.

Love at First Sight

The warmth that I feel in your hugs cannot be described… this article is not for my lover, nor for my friends… this article is dedicated entirely to my mom and dad

They are and will always be my first friends. Their value cannot be weighed.

We all need to be loved, adored, appreciated and pampered but what is the importance of parents in our life?

The simplest answer would be to think of the lives of orphans and we’ll all realise how important our parents are to us.

I can write a really big answer to this question, but there would not be words enough, there would be no more sheets to fill.

If you are not close to your parents, just think for a while of not what they have done for you, but of what you have done for them. They may scold you a lot, fight with you a lot and not talk to you for several days. But there is no moment when they don’t think of you before doing anything for themselves.

Mom, I remember you would have sleepless nights when you got something extremely expensive for yourself. You always wondered what you could have done with that money for me. There were times when you denied me certain things for my own benefit, which I didn’t realize then. But I do realize now. You have always been correct in everything you did.

Dad, I remember how impolite I was to you many-a-times. And you always forgave me. You guided me the best always. I will always be thankful to you.

We fight a lot, but I know, deep within, I always love you both unconditionally, and I know you love me more.

Your love is the most expensive present which nobody else can give me ever.
