Rally For Rivers

0

Unseasonal rains are destroying the crops. The sudden increase in Carbon dioxide content is melting the polar caps. The pollution is damaging all the Natural resources. The most important resource that has been recognized as being polluted and getting exhausted is the fresh river water.
Rally For Rivers is a campaign launched by Isha Foundation to save the rivers, the Life lines of this country

What is the motive behind starting it?

India has grown along the banks of major rivers. Our ancient civilizations were born along the waters. For many years, we maintained the sanctity of this relationship. But in the last few decades, due to the increase in population and industrial development, our perennial rivers are becoming seasonal. Many of the smaller rivers have already vanished. The Ganga and Indus are the world’s most endangered rivers according to WWF.

Majorly depleting rivers in India:

Ganga, Kaveri, Krishna and Narmada.

Key statistics:

· 25% of India is turning into desert.
· Today, we have 75% less water per person than that in 1947.
· 22 out of major 32 Indian cities deal with water shortage every day.
· If this is not targeted soon, only 50% water will be available till 2030 for our survival.
Isha Foundation has come forward with an extra-ordinary plan to reverse this decline and revive our rivers.

Rally For Rivers
What is the idea?

With over a decade of experience in matters related to the environment and sustainability, Isha Foundation offers the best solution to stabilize and revitalize our rivers. It involves creating and maintaining tree cover for a minimum of one kilometre on either side of the entire river length and half a kilometre for tributaries. Native forest trees would be planted in government-owned land along riverbanks. Organic fruit tree cultivation would be taken up on private farmers’ lands.
This solution ensures that rivers are restored and farmers’ livelihood is also enhanced by doubling their income in five years. The availability of fruit improves nutritional intake among people. Trees help keep rivers perennial, reduce floods and drought, increase precipitation, mitigate climate change and prevent soil erosion. This event is an effort to:
• Make everyone aware about the crisis our rivers are facing
• Create awareness among all sections of society about the need to Rally for Rivers
• Gather public support and momentum for the government to implement a positive river policy.

How did the society contribute?

In order to suggest a recommendation to the Central Governmment, the support of common people is very essential. So, the foundation needed a minimum of 10 crore votes to put forward their objective. The people were asked to leave a missed call to a specific number and give their support. There was a great response from the public.

When did it happen?

The rally started from the Isha Yoga Center, Coimbatore on September 3 and was ended in Delhi on October 2. It covered 13 states and 21 major cities. The rally covered a total distance of 6560 km across India.
To create awareness amongst all sections of society, Isha Foundation organized a “Rally for Rivers” awareness campaign in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment in many cities.

I am personally happy that this campaign has reached millions of people and many are talking about it. This rally has gained huge momentum and has gathered support from people from all walks of life including celebrities, chief ministers of different parties, and sports people. Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramiah has given full support for this rally and has entered MOU with Isha Foundation to plant 25 Crore tree saplings along the River Cauvery. Rally for Rivers has gathered support from different celebrities including Superstar Rajnikanth.

Thanks to Isha Foundation for taking an initiative to protect the rivers in India. In spite of knowing the future threats, if we do not act now to reverse the serious decline of these lifelines, the next generation will have to pay a very heavy price.

The Most Awaited Film Of 2017: Padmavati

0
Padmavati

‘Padmavati’, directed by ace director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a period drama film which has Deepika Padukone in the titular role alongside Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Aditi Rao Hydari. The flick has been a part of many mishaps and controversies since the time of its shoot. Even now, there are protests from some religious groups who have threatened to burn the theatres if the movie gets released!

About The Movie

PadmavatiThe movie is based on the life of legendary Rajput queen (Rani Padmini) whose mention is found in an epic poetry ‘Padmavat’, written in 1540 CE. According to ‘Padmavat’ she was a wife of Rawal Ratan Singh (played by Shahid Kapoor), who was a Rajput king of Mewar in ancient times. Ranvir Singh is portraying the role of Alauddin Khilji, who was believed to lay siege to Chittor Fort in Rajputana, pushed by the desire to capture Rani Padmini.

First Look Launch

The first look of Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmini was launched back in September 2017. She looked as authentic and beautiful as it can get with all her regal glory. It was also believed that the actress chose to grow her hairs instead of using wigs to bring realism to the movie. The looks of Ranvir Singh and Shahid Kapoor were launched weeks after Deepika’s look in the flick was unveiled and it left many mouths a gape. Shahid looked convincing as a ‘Rajput’ ruler and garnered appreciation in a great deal. However, the scene-stealer was Ranvir Singh who looked both melancholic and utterly convincing as Alauddin Khilji. The evil look in his eyes, the ‘kaja’l and his attitude down pat has made viewers more excited and impatient for the release of the film.

Official Trailer

The much awaited trailer was released on 9 October 2017 and has been received well by viewers on social media platforms. The trailer featured Deepika Padukone in various looks as Rani Padmini which is an attractive part. Shahid Kapoor is simplistic and genuine in the trailer. What is actually grabbing most eyeballs is the way Ranvir Singh is shown as his looks and his character is something which is not been witnessed before by his fans and his perception as evil ‘Alauddin Khilji’ is entirely coming alive through the trailer.

Below is the link, do watch!

Release Date

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has really put his heart into making this film. At several points he had increased the budget of the film to leave no stone unturned to bring realism to the movie. Initially, the movie was slated to release on 17 November 2017 but as controversies and problems got attached to it, the flick is now set to hit theatres on 1 December 2017!

NOBEL PRIZE- THE PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

0

Every year Nobel prizes are awarded during this period. These are regarded as the most prestigious awards in the world. But do you know when the custom of declaring these awards started and the reason behind starting it? Without any more delay, let’s explore it…
ALFRED NOBEL
The man behind this idea is.. Alfred Nobel, a Swedish scientist. He had a great attraction towards chemistry and interested in many languages. He was proficient in English, German, French and Russian. He made as many as 355 discoveries in his entire life and owns patents for all of them. One of the most powerful bombs, the ‘Dynamite’ is one among his discoveries. All this is fine…but how did he get an idea to present awards in his name?
BIRTH OF THE IDEA
In 1883, Nobel’s brother passed away in Cannes. But a French newspaper wrongly published it as the death of Alfred Nobel, with the headline-“THE MERCHANT OF DEATH IS DEAD”. Since the Dynamite was his discovery, people gave him that name. Nobel was shocked on seeing the news. He had invented many other things other than the dynamite, but people remembered him only for his Dynamite. With this incident there ran a fear in him as how people would remember him after his death. He was worried about his name and fame in the future generations. This was the point where he felt the necessity to establish an award in his name and present it to people who excelled in their respective fields. So, as mentioned in his will, awards were being given from then on.
WHO SPONSERS THE AWARDS??
Alfred Nobel himself has sponsored for all the awards. Wondered??? But yes, this is true. He had given away 94% of his property for this sake. All the revenue for these awards is from the interest on his savings. But the Nobel prize in Economics is alone sponsored by the Bank Of Sweden. In this way, Nobel prizes were being distributed to the experts since 1901.
THE FIVE DOMAINS
The Nobel prizes are awarded to people who have contributed their best in six different fields. The six streams are
• Physics
• Chemistry
• Literature
• Medicine
• Global Peace
• Economics
The prize distribution takes place at Stockholm, Sweden, while the Nobel Peace Prize alone is distributed at Oslo, Norway. Though the awards are announced well in advance, they are distributed only on December 10, the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel.

WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE
The award is distributed among three people in each field every year. The prize money is taken from the fund that Alfred Nobel had donated for the cause. Every Nobel prize is worth of approximately 70 million rupees. The prize money is also distributed among the Nobel laureates in each field.

WHAT IS THE SELECTION CRITERIA??
It’s not that easy to get nominated for the Nobel felicitation. One cannot nominate oneself. Though one’s name is under reference, no information will be given regarding that in prior. Only after the award is announced that the awardees will get to know. There is a special committee that nominates and selects the people to be awarded. They carry out all this procedure in secrecy.

NOBEL PRIZE- THE PRESTIGIOUS AWARD
SOME MORE…..
• It was decided in 1974 that the Nobel prizes will not be presented posthumously.
• The Indian Laureates of The Nobel are twelve in number.
• The first ever Indian to receive the prize was the great poet, Rabindranath Tagore.
• Since 1901, the Nobel Committee has distributed 911 Nobel prizes till date.
• The excellency in the field of Mathematics is not being felicitated by the Nobel. But the  FIELDS MEDAL that is given to the young mathematicians is considered as the Nobel prize in this domain.
• The International Committee Of Red Cross is the only organisation to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for three times.
• Mary Curie was awarded twice for her contributions in the fields of Physics and Chemistry.
• Some famous Indians who received this honour
Rabindranath Tagore – Literature  – 1913
C.V.Raman               – Physics      – 1930
Mother Teresa           – Peace       – 1979
Amartya Sen            – Economics – 1998
Kailash Satyarthi      – Peace        – 2014
These are the people who have made India proud by their selfless contributions in their respective fields.
• This year the Nobel prizes are awarded to-
Physics        – Rainer Weiss, Barry C. Barish , Kip S. Thorne
Chemistry    – Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank, Richard Henderson
Medicine      – Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash, Michael W. Young
Literature     – Kazuo Ishiguro
Peace          – International Campaign to abolish Nuclear Weapons
Economics   – Richard Thaler

So, the great thought of Alfred Nobel many years ago, has provided recognition to many scientists and socialists. They are being felicitated for their works in their respective fields. They get a great respect in the society and they also remain as an inspiration in many young minds. The world is getting to know about the new discoveries happening. They get to know the struggle of some people who are trying to eradicate poverty and establish peace in the country.
A great salute and big thank you to ALFRED NOBEL for making this possible.

Solar Energy: The Need of the Hour

1
Solar Energy

All energy is ultimately derived for the sun and harvesting it directly through solar power seems to be the best way to transition to renewable energy.” – PETER RIVE, ‘SolarCity Unveils World’s Most Efficient Panel’, Time, October 2, 2015

Two main types of solar energy systems are in use today: photovoltaic`s and thermal systems. As we all know that degradation of energy is taking place day by day, thus use of solar energy has become very essential. As said: ” We need to bring sustainable energy to every corner of the globe with technologies like solar energy mini-grids, solar powered lights, and wind turbines.”

Why solar energy is the need of the hour:

solar energy
solar energy
  1. Climate change: The use of fossil fuels is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, which are causing the Earth’s climate to change. Solar energy is a clean, renewable source of energy that does not produce greenhouse gases, making it an important part of the solution to combat climate change.
  2. Energy demand: The world’s energy demand is increasing, and traditional energy sources are becoming increasingly scarce. Solar energy can provide a reliable source of energy that can meet this growing demand.
  3. Energy independence: Solar energy allows individuals, communities, and countries to produce their own energy, reducing dependence on traditional energy sources and increasing energy security.

Reasons to use Solar Energy are:-

Solar farm solar panels electric power energy systems

  1. Environmental benefits: Solar energy is a clean, renewable source of energy that does not produce greenhouse gases or air pollutants, making it an environmentally friendly option.Solar is green. Green is the new black. Enough said. Green energy is totally the new rage, but it is also a way to look out for the future of our planet and reduce our impact.
  2. Cost-effective: Solar energy has become increasingly affordable in recent years, making it a cost-effective option for households and businesses. Solar systems can also provide significant savings on energy bills over time. Cost savings also can be calculated by eliminating the need to trench in grid power, disturbing surrounding landscapes and hard capes, repairing areas, etc.
  3. Reliability: Solar panels are durable and require minimal maintenance, making them a reliable source of energy. They can also provide a continuous source of energy, even during power outages.
  4. Energy independence: Solar energy allows individuals and businesses to produce their own energy, reducing dependence on traditional energy sources and increasing energy security.
  5. Government incentives: Many governments, including India, offer financial incentives and tax credits to encourage the adoption of solar energy.
  6. Job creation: The growth of the solar energy industry creates new job opportunities in a wide range of fields, including installation, maintenance, and manufacturing.
  7. Reduced energy consumption: By using solar energy, individuals and businesses can reduce their energy consumption and contribute to the reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions.
  8.  Easy Installation – Solar power systems can require a bit more for a simple installation; however, the low voltage DC power is much safer to work with than standard electric.
  9. Durable – Silicon water is not durable itself, but sticks it behind some glass and you have the making for something that can withstand a lot more of the elements.
  10. Available Anywhere – No matter what the circumstances are, if there is a sunny spot nearby the solar can be installed to power something remotely installed.

“Another advantage of solar energy is its safety. An enormous amount of time, money, and energy is put into keeping fossil fuel plants and nuclear plants safe. An oil spill can devastate the surrounding environment. Coal mine accidents often cause death or injury. The security companies and police SWAT teams that protect nuclear power plants must be alert to guard against terrorism. By contrast, solar energy is safe from terrorist attacks. There is nothing in a solar plant that could devastate the environment. A breakdown in a solar energy plant might mean a broken mirror. A breakdown in a nuclear plant could mean a major disaster.” – JIM OLLHOFF

The Scope of Solar Energy in India

The scope of solar energy in India is immense, with a growing demand for clean, renewable energy sources to meet the country’s increasing energy needs. The Indian government has set a target of installing 100 GW of solar capacity by 2022 and 175 GW by 2025. This has been facilitated by the creation of policies, subsidies and incentives to encourage the growth of the solar industry.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the installation of solar power plants, rooftop solar systems, and off-grid solar solutions across the country, especially in rural areas. This has not only helped to meet the growing demand for energy but also created job opportunities in the solar industry.

In addition, the development of innovative solar technologies, such as floating solar panels, and the decrease in the cost of solar power generation have further enhanced the scope of solar energy in India. With favorable conditions and a favorable policy environment, the future of solar energy in India looks bright.Regenerate response

The geographical location of the country stands to its benefit for generating solar energy. The reason being India is a tropical country and it receives solar radiation almost throughout the year, which amounts to 3,000 hours of sunshine. Since majority of the population live in rural areas, there is much scope for solar energy being promoted in these areas. Thus, India has massive plan for Solar Energy generation that may not only fulfill the deficit of power generation but also contribute largely in Green Energy Production to help to reduce the Climatic Changes globally.

NANO TECHNOLOGY –  FUTURE OF THE WORLD

0

Have you ever wondered how a foldable mobile phone was made? How the water proof systems were made? How the curved LED televisions are ruling the world today?

Can we ever imagine a world where the tyres of vehicles don’t get wearied out? Can we ever purify the polluted air that gets into our home? Can an injection ever be given without piercing our skin? How nice it would be if such things happen!!!

The answer for all these questions is so simple……All these wonders are possible only with the new-emerging technology…THE NANO TECHNOLOGY.  This is the most trending topic in today’s world which is spreading its arms in almost every field like electronics, computers, chemistry, medicine, food, automobile, etc. This helps man in making his life simpler. The Nano technology is the science that deals with the particles which are less than 100 Nano metres in size.

I nm=10^ (-9) m

So, with this it is understood that the size of a Nano particle is too minute. And here is the overview of some of the major advantages of Nano technology.

IN THE MEDICAL FIELD

  • The accuracy and the quality of X-ray and scan will get improved. The size of equipment also gets minimized. So this would make it easy to carry the scan reports where ever we want.
  • Researches are going on to prepare artificial bones and teeth using Nano technology.
  • If the size of vaccine to be injected is made small , then there would be no need to tolerate the pain of injection.

NO WATER SCARCITY

  • The nano particles have the capacity to filter the harmful effluents and make water pure.
  • The process of separating potable water from the sea water is also possible with nano particles.
  • Salt can easily be separated from water with the help of nano sized electrodes at a very cheap rate. If this happens, there would be no problem of water scarcity in this world.

THE UNWEARY TYRES

  • The most powerful and rechargeable batteries which can last for a longer time are also being available nowadays , thanks to nano technology!!!
  • The nano technology also has its part in increasing the efficiency of the machinery.
  • With the help of nano particles, the size of solar panels can also be minimized and hence can also be used to run vehicles.
  • The same technology also prevents the wearing and tearing of tyres.

THE SELF-CLEANING GLASS

  • Whenever the Ultra Violet rays fall on the glass, the nano particles get activated and make the dust particles on the glass to get loosened and fall off.
  • Researchers want to extend the same technique to the touch screen of the smart phones. So , with this , the touch screen phones which are free of your sweat and the outside dust are surely possible.

SOME OTHER INTERESTING THINGS

  • This technology also helps to have the microbe free key board and mouse. This also helps to prevent the spreading of many contagious diseases.
  • This also helps in preventing the screens of cameras, spectacles and the computers to get wet. Since they are made of carbon, they can clean themselves and also protect the screen from getting scratched.
  • The nano fabric is also creating wonders nowadays. The dresses made of nano materials never loose their lustre and are washer friendly. They don’t even loose the colour that easily.
  • With the introduction of nano whiskers, water proof fabric will also be available. Then there is no worry about the dress getting stained and the cloth will always look fresh.
  • If the aircraft weight gets reduced by 20 percent, the fuel efficiency gets increased by 20 percent, which will ultimately lead to the cheaper aviation charges.

So, as mentioned earlier, nano technology has spread its wings in all the possible domains in the world and is making the survival of man much simpler than ever before. Now it’s our responsibility to use the technology in a proper way and make it advantageous. The future can really be wonderful and fruitful with the proper usage of the ever-growing nano technology.

9 THINGS THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TIRUMALA

0
TIRUMALA

The abode of Sri Lord Venkateswara, is one of the most visited Hindu temples in India. Lord Venkateswara loves his devotees and grants all their wishes. He is known as the ‘Lord of Kali yug’. The 13,000 kilos of Gold ornaments that the lord owns is a proof for his gigantic splendor, while the thousand crores of bank balance on the lord’s name is the mirror for the belief that his devotees have in him. All this is what has made him the second richest god in the world.

  • THE TEMPLE HISTORY

Based on the available records, the idol of Lord Venkateswara is self emerged( swayambhoo ) . There are innumerable divine places, within the precincts of the temple and the architectural beauty of these places is jaw dropping. Each and every place reveals memorable sweet incidents connected with the lives of many devotees who are dear to the Lord. The divine leelas of the almighty are visibly hidden in these places.

  • THE MIND BLOWING ADMINISTRATION

The entire temple area is spread over a thousand acres. The administration takes place under 37 departments , employing 9,000 permanent employees along with the other 15,000 workers . The Hundi collection of the temple is just mind blowing. It is never less than Rs.3 crore per day. Lakhs of people visit the temple everyday and seek his blessings. The temple budget this year is Rs.2900 crores. This has been possible only at Tirumala and not in any other temple around the globe.

  • DARSHAN OF THE UGRA MOORTHY, ONCE A YEAR

One of the main idols of the Lord , the most famous UGRA SRINIVASA idol is made available for the darshan of his devotees only once in a year . This has been the idol that was used for all the utsavs in the temple. But due to a fire accident which destroyed the houses of the temple priests , the temple committee has decided to stop the custom of taking the ugra moorthy of Lord Srinivasa for possession . Since that , the custom of taking the idol of Lord Malayappa for possession has started.

  • THE LORD’S DIVINE COSTUMES

Earlier , the clothes of the Lord were changed only four times a year , on specific occassions. The cost of the cloth in those days was Rs.8000. So the cloth was washed once a week and then reused. Gradually, the practise of using new cloth every week has started. So the committee has started a new seva where devotees can pay Rs.12,500 and get the divine chance of sitting infront of the Lord in the main temple on that day. This special seva is held on every Friday and the most astonishing fact is that all the tickets for the next 30 years have been booked!!!

  • THE FIVE SPECIAL IDOLS OF LORD SRINIVASA

There are five different idols in Tirumala which are offered special poojas and prayers every day.

  • The main idol of the lord is present in the ANAND NILAYA ( the place of happiness ) which is 8 feet tall.
  • The BHOGA SRINIVASA is the one who is offered the daily pujas.
  • The Lord who is taken for possession in the streets of the temple is the MALAYAPPA SWAMY.
  • The KOLUVU SRINIVASA is the Lord to whom the priests narrate the earnings and the horoscope of the day .
  • The UGRA SRINIVASA is the one who is seen once a year.

  • THE VYKHANASA SHASTRA

All the puja procedure that is being followed today is said to have been started by sage Vaikhanasa , who is expected to have found out the main idol of the Lord at Tirumala. So even today the priests follow the same process , following the tradition.

  • THE FAMOUS BRAHMOTSAVA

During the reign of Sri Krishna Devaraya , the grand event of Brahmotsava was held 9 times a year . On the last day of the event , there has been a custom of reading out the earnings of the 9 days to the Lord. Even today the Brahmotsava is the most spectacular event where thousands of devotees visit Tirumala just to have the darshan of the almighty and fill their hearts with his magnificent posture .

  • THE SACRED WATER BODIES

It is said that there are 66 crore sacred water bodies at Tirumala. The most important ones are 9 in number. It is a strong belief that devotees who take a sacred bath here get rid of all their sins and become pure.

  • THE DELICIOUS LADDU

The first thing that comes to one’s mind on hearing the name TIRUMALA is the most famous and the delicious laddu. This is the prasad that the devotees take home as the blessing of their beloved Lord. Millions of laddus are prepared everyday for the sake of devotees. The taste of this laddu is unbeatable. The temple committee also owns a patent for this laddu.

By remembering the name of Srinivasa , the sins get washed out. By praising him, we can get our wishes fulfilled. By just having his darshan , one can get salvation. This is a little information that I have collected. The stories of the lord and the greatest records of him are innumerable. So the Lord will always be praised and his devotees will always be helped.

“VENKATADRI SAMAM STHANAM BRAHMANDE NAASTHI KINCHANA

VENKATESA SAMO DEVO NABHOOTHO NA BHAVISHYATHI…!!!”

Jharkhand Movement

0

The word Jharkhand , meaning “forest region,” applies to a forested mountainous plateau region in eastern India, south of the Indo-Gangetic Plain and west of the Ganga’s delta in Bangladesh. The term dates at least to the sixteenth century. In the more extensive claims of the movement, Jharkhand comprises seven districts in Bihar, three in West Bengal, four in Orissa, and two in Madhya Pradesh. Ninety percent of the Scheduled Tribes in Jharkhand live in the Bihar districts. The tribal peoples, who are from two groups, the Chotanagpurs and the Santals, have been the main agitators for the movement.

Jharkhand is mountainous and heavily forested and, therefore, easy to defend. As a result, it was traditionally autonomous from the central government until the seventeenth century when its riches attracted the Mughal rulers. Mughal administration eventually led to more outside interference and a change from the traditional collective system of land ownership to one of private landholders.

These trends intensified under British colonial rule, leading to more land being transferred to the local tribes’ creditors and the development of a system of “bonded labor,” which meant permanent and often hereditary debt slavery to one employer. Unable to make effective use of the British court system, tribal peoples resorted to rebellion starting in the late eighteenth century. In response, the British government passed a number of laws in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to restrict alienation of tribal lands and to protect the interests of tribal cultivators.

The advent of Christian missions in the region in 1845 led to major cultural changes, which were later to be important in the Jharkhand movement. A significant proportion of the tribes converted to Christianity, and schools were founded for both sexes, including higher institutions to train tribal people as teachers.

Jharkhand’s mineral wealth also has been a problem for the tribes. The region is India’s primary source of coal and iron. Bauxite, copper, limestone, asbestos, and graphite also are found there. Coal mining began in 1856, and the Tata Iron and Steel Factory was established in Jamshedpur in 1907.

The modern Jharkhand movement dates to the early part of the twentieth century; activity was initially among Christian tribal students but later also among non-Christians and even some nontribals. Rivalries developed among the various Protestant churches and with the Roman Catholic Church, but most of the groups coalesced in the electoral arena and achieved some successes on the local level in the 1930s. The movement at this period was directed more at Indian dikus (outsiders) than at the British. Jharkhand spokesmen made representations to British constitutional commissions requesting a separate state and redress of grievances, but without much success.

Independence in 1947 brought emphasis on planned industrialization centering on heavy industries, including a large expansion of mining. A measure of the economic importance of the Jharkhand mines is that the region produces more than 75 percent of the revenue of Bihar, a large state. The socialist pattern of development pursued by the central government led to forced sales of tribal lands to the government, with the usual problem of perceived inadequate compensation. On the other hand, government authorities felt that because the soils of the region are poor, industrialization was particularly necessary for the local people, not just for the national good. However, industrial development brought about further influx of outsiders, and local people considered that they were not being hired in sufficient numbers. The nationalization of the mines in 1971 allegedly was followed by the firing of almost 50,000 miners from Jharkhand and their replacement by outsiders.

Land was also acquired by the government for building dams and their reservoirs. However, some observers thought that very little of the electricity and water produced by the dams was going to the region. In addition, government forestry favored the replacement of species of trees that had multiple uses to the forest dwellers with others useful only for commercial sales. Traditional shifting cultivation and forest grazing were restricted, and the local people felt that the prices paid by the government for forest products they gathered for sale were too low. In the decades since independence, these problems have persisted and intensified.

On the political front, in 1949 the Jharkhand Party, under the leadership of Jaipal Singh, swept the tribal districts in the first general elections. When the States Reorganisation Commission was formed, a memorandum was submitted to it asking for an extensive region to be established as Jharkhand, which would have exceeded West Bengal in area and Orissa in population. The commission rejected the idea of a Jharkhand state, however, on the grounds that it lacked a common language. In the 1950s, the Jharkhand Party continued as the largest opposition party in the Bihar legislative assembly, but it gradually declined in strength. The worst blow came in 1963 when Jaipal Singh merged the party into the Congress without consulting the membership. In the wake of this move, several splinter Jharkhand parties were formed, with varying degrees of electoral success. These parties were largely divided along tribal lines, which the movement previously had not seen.

There also has been dissention between Christian and non-Christian tribal people because of differences in level of education and economic development. Non-Christian tribals formed separate organizations to promote their interests in the 1940s and again in the 1960s. In 1968 a parliamentary study team visited Ranchi investigating the removal of groups from the official list of Scheduled Tribes (thereby depriving these groups of various compensatory privileges). Mass meetings were held and petitions submitted to the study team maintaining that Christians had ceased to be tribals by conversion from tribal religions, and that they benefitted unfairly both from mission schooling and from government protection as members of Scheduled Tribes. In the following years, there were accusations that the missionaries were foreign outside agitators.

In August 1995, the state government of Bihar established the 180-member Provisional Jharkhand Area Autonomous Council. The council has 162 elected members (two each from eighty-one assembly constituencies in the Jharkhand area) and eighteen appointed members.
