City Profile

Ahmadabad is a renowned city of Gujarat and best known for its historical importance as a direct association with M.K. Gandhi. It is the largest city in Gujarat state and sixth largest in India. It has ranked third place in the 2010 Forbes list of fastest growing cities in the decade. The city has become a major industrial and economic hub of many manufacturing units. After the creation of Gujarat state, the city has became a major focus of educational institutions of national accreditations. With its rich historical past and vibrant future, it was ranked as the best place to live in India by the Times of India in 2012.

Architectural Glory

The city was rules by many rulers from time to time, but prominent from them was Ahmad Shah, who founded this city on 26 Feb. 1412. Soon, a fort was build with 10 km fort wall running along the fort. There were 12 impressive city gates to the fort. This fort area now consists of the old city and has vibrant bazaars and traditional living. M.K. Gandhi built his ashrams here, from where he carried out his many mission for the freedom of India, prominent were Sabarmati Ashram at the bank of Sabarmati. In the modern outlook of the city, many world renewed architects like Louis Kahn best known for designing the Indian Institute of Management- Ahmadabad, Le Corbusier designed many residential and industrial architecture examples across the city while he worked for the planning of Chandigarh. Prominent among them were Shodhan and Sarabhai Villas, the Sanskar Kendra and the Mill Owner’s Association Building. F.L. Wright too worked here. Hence, this is the only city in India where the famous trinity of architecture world has their projects.

Fairs and festivals

The city has a vibrant population of 5.6 million. Hence, there are series of fairs and festivals that are celebrated with pomp and joy. The festivities of Ahmadabad are famous for its rich cuisine and kite-flying. The Kite flying festival called as Uttarayan is a two day affair observed on 14 and 15 January is world famous. People from across the state, country as well as world gather here and fly kites in open grounds and roof tops. Another important festival is the celebration of nine day long Navratri celeberations was most famous in India. People celebrate with special Garba dance celebrations from evening till mid night. Each house was decorated during these nine days by special floor graffiti called Rangoli in local dialect. Other than these, Dewali, Eid are other major festival celebrated with great enthusiasm and happiness.

Ireland is considered as the birth place of Halloween. On this day, children get dressed in the scary yet attractive costumes of ghosts, witches, cartoon characters or any other dress which might be popular among the children in those days and as the night arrives, children go to their neighborhood asking for candies and if they don’t receive any candies from an adult person they start shouting “Trick or Treat” which means that the person not giving the candies will be subject to the pranks or tricks by the children.

Pumpkins can also be seen outside the doors of the houses of people. Faces are carved in the pumpkins by the children to make the pumpkin look even better. After carving the faces they put candle in it and then lit the candle, so that the outline of the carved face can be seen in the dark. These carved pumpkins are also called Jack-o-lanterns.

Children love to look unique and attractive on this day and they try to do different things, try different costumes and styles to look better than everyone else. They can get exclusive and some really amazing Halloween costume ideas online easily or they can take help from their parents, elder brothers or sisters, other family members, friends or any other person who can help them out in making their attractive costumes. Children can get ideas from any movie, or any other their personal favorite character they like in cartoons or movies or anything which is unique and good to wear which easily catches the sight of every person. “Antibiotics” as the word indicates its meaning, ‘anti’ means against and ‘biotic’ means micro-organisms. These are a type of antimicrobial medicines used in case of any bacterial, fungal or protozoic infection. The idea revolutionised the field of medication and made it remarkably broad for the eradication of many diseases which were deadly for humans.
You must have heard from your doctor about ‘Narrow-spectrum’ or ‘broad-spectrum’ antibiotics. Let us know about this. ‘Narrow-spectrum’ antibiotics targets only specific type of bacteria where as ‘Broad- spectrum’ antibiotics targets wide range of bacteria. Antibacterial antibiotics are among the most commonly used antibiotics. The mechanism and selection of antibiotic to treat any disease depends upon their mechanism of action, chemical structure or causative microbe for the disease. Some target the bacterial cell wall, some target cell membrane, some inhibit the synthesis of bacterial enzyme or protein synthesis. The idea is to inhibit the metabolic reactions of the disease causing organisms which affects our immune system.
Now, let us know about the history of antibiotics. It all started in 1929, with the observation of Alexander Flemming while working on disease causing bacteria called streptococcus. He found that in one of his unwashed cultural plate, bacteria was not able to grow or killed. He concluded it was due to the presence of the fungal mould( penicillin) in cultural plate. Florey and Chain, then added their idea to this observation to use penicillin as antibiotic. Florey, Chain and Flemming were awarded with Nobel prize for this revolutionary discovery.

Most the antibiotics which we are using today were discovered in the mid 1980s. The discovery of arsphenamine, first synthesised by Alfred Bertheim and Paul Ehrlich in 1907, used to treat syphilis added to start antibacterial chemotherapy. Prontosil, was the first active antibacterial drug discovered by Gerhard Damagk and he was awarded with Nobel Prize (1939) for this discovery.

Off course, there is no doubt that antibiotics have made our life better and disease-free. But yes, we can ignore it’s limitations. The side-effects includes allergic reactions, diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, drug fever and even toxicity in your body. Antibiotics may have widespread use but they are not effective against most common fungal or viral infections such as common cold, ringworms etc. If your stopping your antibiotic treatment or not taking it properly, it may lead the disease to worst or may be bacteria get resistant to the antibiotics. So,it is advisable to don’t become your doctor yourself, if you have started taking antibiotics. Taking proper medication from your doctor is must and needful

Who wants to buy health problems with their hard earned money. But, we all are doing the same. Impurities in food items has been very common these days. Food contamination is taking a big toll on our health. Adulterants are being added freely in food items in the name of color, aroma and what not.

FDA has permitted a limited amount of chemical adulterants that can be added into edibles. But, those limits are being crossed carelessly by the food producing companies. Besides that every food item is not regulated by FDA such as loose pulses, rice, milk etc. Now, the question arises on the reliability of the edibles we introduce in our daily meals. Some chemicals can even cause deadly diseases like cancer.

How can we safeguard our families from these harmful chemicals? Do not panic, we are here to tell you how you can test the purity of your kitchen stuff.

Milk: Milk is considered as a whole meal and the most reliable source of nutrition. Milk is said to be pure and serene that’s why it is used extensively in Puja rituals. But, milk also is not free from added impurities.

Starch and urea are the common adulterants found in milk. Read on to find the testing method for identifying them.

Starch- If a blue color formation is seen after adding a few drops of tincture of iodine, it indicates the presence of starch in the milk.

Urea- Add half tsp of soybean flour to 5ml milk and shake for 4-6 minutes. Then dip a turmeric indicator paper in the solution. If the paper turns red , it shows presence of urea in the milk.

Turmeric Powder- Chalk powder and synthetic colors are most commonly found contamination in turmeric powder.

Synthetic color- Add 5 ml of water and a few drops of concentrated hydrochloric acid to one tsp of turmeric powder. You will notice formation of pink color, it will disappear soon but the color persists then the turmeric powder is contaminated with artificial color.

Chalk Powder- When 3 ml of water plus a few drops of concentrated hydrochloric acid to one gram of turmeric powder produces effervescent indicates chalk powder is added to turmeric powder.

Table Salt- Salt is another commodity that is really essential for cooking. Salt may contain powdered white stone.

White Stone Powder- Add one tsp salt in one glass of water and stir well. Salt is completely soluble in water. If it leaves white color behind that clearly states that it has presence of white stone powder

Ghee- Ghee normally contains impurities of starch.

Starch- Boil a small amount of Ghee with some water and allow to cool. Then add a few drops of iodine solution. Formation of the blue color shows presence of starch in ghee.

Golden Toad refers to a special species of Frog. Orange Toad is the another name for this species. These are mostly found in Costa Rica. Once these used to be common species but no traces of these species since 1989. Air Pollution and Global warming caused the extinction of these species. Holdridge’s toad has also listed in the extinct species list since 2007.

Liverpool Pigeon

Liverpool Pigeon are a variety of pigeons are mostly found in Tahiti. The reasons for extinction of these species remain unknown. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) declared it extinction of these species in 2008.

Azores is an island in Portugal. Though it is very close to US this Island is unknown to most of Americans. It’s an isolated island in the middle of North Atlantic Ocean. It’s combine of nine volcanic islands. The world came to know the existence of this island when George W. Bush held a summit before Iraq war. These Islands are good for whale watch and lava tubes.

Lord Howe Island

The Lord Howe Island is part of Australia. It’s situated to the eastern coast of New South Wales. There is no cell phone signal available on this island and the way is narrow such only you can reach by boat or by bike. As Australia has the world famous rich coral reef, these islands has a wide variety of species, comprising of 90 species of coral and 500 species of tropical fish. It’s a part of UNESCO World heritage Site, so 75% of island is preserved. Mount Gower is with a height of 2900 feet provides the entire view of island.

Ibo Island

Ibo Island is part of Mozambique in Indian Ocean. It’s still largely undiscovered by modern world. The economy of this island are the unspoiled coral reefs, mangrove lagoons, barracuda and tropical fish. Quirimbas National park is built on this island to preserve elephants, lions, leopards, crocodile and even wild dog. 375 different species of fishes are being preserved on this island, including threatened pipefish and seahorse.

No matter how good, naughty, cry baby or evil your little brothers and sisters are what you say in a high pitch and eyes glaring showdown, you win the case. You are the in charge when your parents not present. They know not to mess up now.ami3

We are wiser
as we are older so we get more experience and life lessons meaning we are much wiser that little ones. But they are always smart and have questions ready to counter back. We are expected to set good examples. You have to be A+ all the time.mess

 

Burden of being Old
If you did something funny or naughty, it’s your fault and if your little sibling did it, it’s also your fault because you’re responsible and older one. It can be very annoying when they starts to copy you and you get a *nice* speech from your parents. It’s our responsibility to watch their all actions.img

Being the Idol
having the great feeling when little ones idolize you. The feeling is very fabulous and can never be forgotten. Feels great that someone see you as idol, though it’s only your sibling. You always stop them from making the mistake you did. They all always consider for any review.

 

Pride Burned
when your younger sibling gets something done or learnt grown up things before you did in his age. What!!!!!! Odd feeling of pride and fury ALERT!! My younger brother got all function knowledge of computer and mobile even better than me.

 

Scary Devil
you will do everything in possible to protect your younger sibling even though how annoying they are. Speak a wrong against him; other person is dead (no matters how many times you did same). No One Messes with my bro!! You even sometimes spy on them and their personal life (no privacy). Sense of protecting and guiding them always make you do weird things.

Bug Eating Delicious or Creepylecious?

Every different continent, country, state or even a small geographical area has a different culture which is very typical to it and so are the food habits. It is said that we are what we eat.

Almost everyone is conscious about the hygiene of their food. By the word hygiene here, we not only point to the fact that the food we are taking is properly cleaned and cooked in hygienic method but also our food or veggies are free of any kind of worms or insects.

But, the scenario is changing now a days. New trends or we can say weird trends are emerging rapidly in food habits. While the idea of having a stir fried cockroach for lunch may appeal to some (ewww) but it’s definitely a big No No for me. I would never ever think about eating those innocent but creepy insects. To some, considering worms and insects as non edible is just a psychological inefficiency.

Let’s have a look at some of the creepy food trends which are being liked by a great number of people around the world.

Why not start with one of the latest invention of the hot list. It’s called Critters Bitters. These are nothing but cocktail bitters made from toasted grasshopper like insects, crickets. These bitters are invented by Lucy Knops and Julia Plevin. According to them eating bugs might even save the world. Well, good logic!!!!

Another player in the same league is These are also Cocktail bitters made from crushed cochineal insects which provides its typical red color.While We Indians are not accustomed of encountering a stall which offers worms and insects as snacks but, it’s very common for Thai people. Thailand has a lot to offer when it comes to food made from bugs.

Non pai:-

The word Non means worms and Pai means bamboo in Thai. It is also called “Rot Duan” that means “Fast Train”. It is one of the most popular snack and seasoned with Thai peppers.

Tak Ja Tan

This dish contains a common grasshopper that is said to damage the rice crop and the Thai farmers found took their revenge by collecting and selling them to the vendors. The vendors fry those grasshoppers and offer as a snack. Revenge accomplished!!

It’s MY point of view on Entomophagy. For those of us who have never heard or read about Entomophagy, it’s the official name for eating insects.

So, back to the point, this is what I think about eating bugs. But, different people have different choices. It’s completely okay to follow a food habit that may sound creepy to someone else.

Can you work continuously for one day???? Ok, if you are saying ‘YES’, then wait, I will change my question. Can you work continuously for one month without even one minute break????

Now, your answer is definitely ‘NO’. But there is one who will never say no. It is the symbol of love. It is the reason of your sonorous heart beats. It is our pumping heart.

Heart is the important part of our body. It will work for you till your last breath without complaining. Even any non-living object needs care and yes, heart also needs it. It seems our heart is not getting proper care and it is getting tired now. Today, millions of people are heart patients and the number is increasing at alarming rate. ‘Congenital heart disease‘ makes this condition worst. We need to be more alert, more aware about the changing conditions around us.

If we are talking about heart, then I have to clear the misconception that people commonly have about ‘heart attack’ and ‘heart failure‘. Mostly people think that these both are the same but the story is different. They are not the same. Heart attack happens when the heart muscle begins to die due to blockage of the oxygen-rich blood to a section of heart muscle. Heart failure is the condition in which the heart is not able to pump enough blood to meet the body’s need.

Of course, there are many reasons behind unhealthy condition of our heart. A chronically stressful life, social isolation, depression, lacks of exercise, being overweight increase the risk factors. Ignorance of the warning signs is the main reason which leads to the uncontrollable conditions. Today’s generation wants to explore everything. They want to try everything. Yes, it is not wrong but making it addiction is wrong. Having one to two alcohol drinks may cause reduction in heart diseases but beyond this, it will damage your heart. Smoking will damage your heart and lungs both. These conditions need to be getting correct.

If will not change our routine in favour of our heart’s good health, then the conditions will become more dangerous. We need to lower the risk factors. We need to take some immediate steps. We need to create awareness among people. If we will continue to sleep, then the condition can come when each family might have a heart patient as their member.
