Eid-Ul-Fitr The Sacrifice Feast

Eid Prayers In Barashalghar, Debidwar, Comilla

Eid-ul-Fitr is a month of prayers and plead for the mercy and forgiveness of one’s mistakes. The month concludes the fasting of faithful to beseech Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala. Ramadan is not just about abstaining over food and drink, it is a test of calmness and endurance. Eid-ul-Fitr is a celebration of the people who walked on Almighty Allah teachings. It is for those people who worship Almighty Allah with complete devotion in the month of Ibadah. This festival describes the caring and sharing of happiness and blessings in muslim community.

kaaba_mirror_edit_jj

It is festival of joy and bright light which decorates aur life whith happiness. This day is used to spread Harmony and Duahs among our relatives, friends and all those who emigrated from Doonya. Exchange of gifts among young ones and meeting sick is done during Eid. In this month of celebration, we forget those who are lesser privileged in the society and have nothing to celebrate. This day is just like another ordinary day for them. Bare roadside, hospitalised people are the lonely ones who can’t even meet their loved-ones. Let us pray and hope for them that a day will come when those poor people welcome this festival with warmth and blessings.

O Allah! As we eat dishes, wear new clothes, get gifts from elders, let us attribute the special things to those who can’t afford. Let us implant the message the message of giving, caring and sharing. Because happiness doesn’t result from what we get, but from what we give. Let us teach everyone the condition of the millions of pople and children that are in war affected areas like Afghanistan, Kashmir, Iraq, Phillipines and the underprivileged areas of Asia, Africa and America who can’t even afford their necessities.

This is the day for entreating and memorializing those unfortunate people who became the victims of the naturally occuring disasters like drought, famine, earthquakes like in Kathmandu, Kashmir and Pakistan as well. They do need our blessings and prayers as we cannot deprive ourselves from the suffering they have gone through. This major damage can’t be disregarded saying it doen’t fascinate or affect us. It would be an injustice to humanity if we say this. As the Holy Quran says in 8th verse of Surah Al Ma’idah:

O Devotee! Be true to the Commandments of Allah, bearing witness to justice and don’t get feared of people who incite you for not doing justice

Donating money, clothes or anything to charity doesn’t make so much of difference but actually helping the one in need changes the perception. When we help others, there comes a special feeling of belonging to the one whom we helped. Our personal values teaches us to be kind, helpful and compassionate. There is no greater happiness than the smile and happiness of the one whom we endorsed. That is what decides our virtue of life.

From the moment, when the blessings of Allah strikes over a human being then he or she become acquainted of quality and intendment. Almighty Allah is the creator of all. All the emotions are only applicable before Allah. So modesty in front of the most praised creator of this earth is itself an honour and pride for human being. Almighty Allah is also considered as a vital force which keeps a human being aware from the realities of life.

The whole month of Eid-Ul-Fitr comprises of fasts and prayers on daily basis. With this muslims also read Kuran, feed poor hungry people and donate money to needy. Then a day comes when the new full moon of Eid-Ul-Fitr is sighted and fast comes to an end. This moon is considered to be divine and sacred for the muslim communities. All the communities join together to celebrate this holy festival. Sweets, gifts and different kinds of greetings are exchanged between the loved ones. This festival of affection and cordiality spreads the message of maintaining brotherhood and peace among all communities. Emotions like jealousy, anxiety and hatred are said goodbye with this. Eid-ul-Fitr is said to be the rejuvenation of all the religions across the country by spreading happiness, love and devotion. As peace and love makes this world a better place to live in.

The Surya Siddhanta: Pongal

0
Pongal

I was born in North India but for my studies I went to South India (Chennai). Then I experienced different culture. Even the festivals celebrated there were different. I was always curious about the new things which led me to know about one of the very popular festivals in Tamil Nadu, that is, PONGAL. When we think about the festival, we often want to know reason behind it. Pongal is a very well known festival of Tamil Nadu. It is a harvest festival that shows the return of the sun to the Northern Hemisphere. Like every festival even this festival is celebrated with happiness and enthusiasm. As nearly 70% of the population lives in village, and all of us depend on the agriculture. This festival directly or indirectly relates to every person. It is a kind of a special thanksgiving to the Lord Sun, the Earth and the cattle. It also marks the harvest of the crops. Every word has its own meaning and every festival has a reason behind it. What is Pongal? It is derived from the word ‘Ponga’ which means ‘boil’ and therefore Pongal means overflowing. Well, it is also the name of the sweet dish which is made on the Pongal day. It is connected with the annual cycle of seasons.

When is it celebrated?

It is celebrated at the start of the Tamil month which is known as Thai. It mostly takes place on January 13 or 14. It takes place for four days. It is just not helpful in telling us the reaping of the harvest but also the departure of the southeast monsoon in Southern India. As the cycle of the season push out the old and pull in the new, same is the initiation related to pongal. It relates to the cleaning up the old field and crops, burning down of the rubbish or the old one and growing up the new crop.

How do we celebrate it?

bhogiAt the very first day, it is Bhogi Pongal. It is the time when we clean our houses and decorate them. Rangoli is made at entrances of the houses. People wear new clothes to show how much excited they are to celebrate it. Families, relatives and friends meet together to feast, dance and enjoy. Most popular is the third and the fourth day. There are bull fights and bird fights especially Jallikattu which is in Madurai. The bull fight is a special attraction for tourists. Every festival has its rituals. On the Thai or Surya Pongal which is on the second day, we worship Sun God. It is the main day of the Pongal. This day corresponds with the winter harvest festival Makar Sankranti, which is celebrated throughout India. This festival marks the journey of the sun tp north and warmer weather and this journey is of six months. People get together at home and prepare Pongal dish. During prayers, they offer it to Sun God and then serve to other people in the house. The third day, Mattu Pongal is celebrated which is dedicated to farm animals as most people still use bulls, bullock carts and traditional methods and implementations for agriculture and ploughing. We offer our prayers to them especially cows. I remember people used to decorate cows on this day.muttu pongal Kaanum Pongal is celebrated on the fourth or last day of the celebration. On this day, we offer our prayers to birds. People make balls of cooked rice and keep them in a place where birds can eat them. It is also the day when people thank each other for their support in harvesting.  It is also celebrated as a family day out. Image source atinytoes.wordpress.com

What is the Pongal dish?

The most important and remembering part during the celebration is the Pongal dish. There are different types of Pongals. Venpongal is made with the mixture of rice and moong daal. It is cooked in ghee, raisins, cashew nut, dry fruits and spices. There is also a Sakkarai Pongal which is a sweet version of Pongal. It is made up of jiggery which is unrefined sugar. It doesn’t include spices, so, Sakkarai Pongal and Venpongal are entirely opposite. Clay pots are used to cook pongal on the stoves which are made up of stones and bricks. They use wood as a fuel. Everyone used to shout ‘Pongalo Pongal’ after it starts to boil over. It does not only bring the knowledge about the celebration of the festival but it also brings joy and happiness. It gives the feeling of being together and welcoming everything in life respectfully and with the open hearts.

With the amidst celebration of victory of positivity over negativity Navaratri is a pan- asian nine days festival celebrated across the country by different names. In sanskrit Navaratri means Nine-nights when the energy aspect of Goddess Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati invoked as universal mother. These nine nights symbolize the removal of all the miseries of life.

It signifies winning of truth over evils and brings the divine quality in us. Bringing divine quality doesn’t only refer to being true, it also exhorts human to wake up from all the hurdles of life and bring the change. This nine-day festival purifies every mind to bring positive virtues in lives that are the key to one’s happiness.

For the first three days Goddess Durga is worshiped and then Goddess Saraswatii for the next three days. The last three days are devoted to Goddess Laxmi.navratri

This bright festival begins with the fortnight of Ashvin Maha (season of autumn).  This festival includes ritualistic pooja and fasting. It follows the Indian calendar and according to it Chaitra Navratri is celebrated in the month of March or April and Sharad Navratri is celebrated in the month of September or October.

For the celebration, people from cities and villages gather together for the pooja to perform on small shrines that represents various aspects of Goddess Durga, Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati. For the nine consecutive days, there is a full celebration including chanting of mantras, bhajans and folk songs.

How do we celebrate it?

It defines both, the cultural and religious themes accompanied with traditional music and dance. Gujarat is the spotlight on Navratri. Celebration takes place here all night with dances and festivities. Garba is the most famous dance form that is derived from the lord Krishna singing and dancing with the Gopis using Dandiya.

Celebration has gone through the changes with well-choreographed dance performances, people with beautiful costumes and songs. Tourists go to Vadodara in Gujarat to enjoy band music performances with high energy, singing and dancing.

During Navratri, there is an increase in number of devotees making their way to pilgrimage, Vaishno Devi in Jammu. There is a huge Navratri mela in Himachal Pradesh which marks the auspicious occasion. We all know the great story of Goddess Durga who destroyed the demon Mahishasura. In West Bengal, people worship Goddess Durga with a great devotion and celebrate Durga pooja with reverence.  Ramlila is a an enact where people perform scenes from Ramayan. In which people enact the story of Lord Rama, Laxman ji, Sita mata, Hanuman ji and Ravan. This is performed in a big ground and towards the end of the story statues of Ravan, Meghnath and  Kumbkaran are burned. On the tenth day of the festival which is Ashwin or Sharad Navratri, Dussehra is celebrated nation-wide on this day.

People in South India arrange the idols in a step pattern and call upon the name of God. The ninth day of the festival which is Dasara, in Mysore, there is folk music and dance performances, wrestling tournaments and tableau participation. The demonstration of tableau with embellished elephants, camels and horses starting with the brightly-lit Mysore Palace is very famous. Vijayadashami is also celebrated in South India which is an auspicious day for performing puja for one’s vehicle.

Celebrations and festival are part of life which makes the life more beautiful and meaningful. It gives reasons to people to get together in harmony and celebrate it with full zeal and enthusiasm. We should remember that rather there is a purpose of everything. Rather than just celebrating it, we should focus on the learning through the purpose. Festivals gives us the reason to believe in the divine power and to follow the teachings through the story and reasons behind the celebration of the festival. They give us the learning and if we follow them then we can surely improve in our life. It brings satisfaction and makes our life easier to live. That is why rather than just wearing new clothes, eating tasty food and sweet dishes there is more to these celebrations that we should know. It brings the time when we should forget our hatred and bring everyone together for the celebrations.

And not to forget the ones who playing the characters of the celebrity. Though, every time a biopic is not about a celebrity its also about some common people who rose to fame through their hard work, struggle or generosity. A biopic in Bollywood has always been well-recieved by the critics. Forget about autobiographies, we all are now more intended to know about some people by watching their story on the big screen.

    Expectations from a Biopic

Bollywood has made Biopics on characters associated with history, entertainment, sports or just a common man/woman.
