Peep into Karan Johar’s life, his new Dharma Production’s office and his new book!

0

Karan Johar is funny, emotional and an intriguing personality. Let me introduce you to his inner life in terms of his new office, a dramatic feather chair that he loves and never known secrets!

Q) Karan Johar is only forty-four and he has added an autobiography in his list of achievements! Does he feel apprehensive about it?

A) Karan feels that yes it is too soon as an autobiography but he does not think it as an autobiography. He feels that it is only the journey of his life and more it is about his insecurities, fears, experiences, complexes etc. He felt that he should divide his life into two halves and let this book be the first part of his life. Moreover, he wrote this book to get his vulnerabilities exposed to the world because he feels that it is important to put them out, so that people could resonate with some of the contents out of it.
Q) Karan Johar knows secrets which could be marriage-breaking and career ending. His stories in his book might overlap with someone and unintentionally reveal secrets! Did he take permission from other people before writing his book before spilling the beans?
A) Karan frankly says “No, not at all!”. He says that it was very clear that the book was his journey, his feelings, his thoughts about himself and it was not facts about other people. It was his equation with other people so it had nothing to do with facts or truths of other people.

Q) Did he take permission from people like Shahrukh Khan, as he wrote about his misunderstandings with him?

A) Karan says that he wrote everything with pure honesty and because things in his books are written holding integrity, he thinks that he would not upset people close to him. So, he did not ask for any permission or agreement to anyone.
Q) Did he talk to Kajol before writing about the fallout between them both?

A) Karan tells us that the relationship he shared with Kajol is very rare in this industry. When the fallout between them happened, he discussed it with Shahrukh and he advised him to sort things out but unfortunately it did not happen. And despite Kajol and Karan shared fantastic relationshio once, now they do not talk to each other and he did not talk to her at the time he was writing about this fallout too.

Q) Is it awkward for him to behave differently with her now?

A) Karan says he never looked through people and it is hard to do with someone who he was very close to. But now both if them (Kajol and Karan) pretend that they do not exist for each other. He feels awkward in parties when both of them are in close vicinity of each other. Still he has kept the picture of Kajol and Shahrukh in his office wall.

Q) One of the people you worked with once said that he thought he would never get a job at Dharma Productions because he felt that Karan Johar hires only good-looking people. What are Karan’s views in this?

A) To this Karan laughs and says that he has always been a victim of perception. He says that if he wears shiny shoes he does not expect everyone else to do it too. The fact that Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra were assistant directors in Dharma Productions and are drop-dead-gorgeous does not mean that Karan Johar wants to work with only good looking people.
Q) As Karan’s new office is Dharma Production is just an year old, let us know who is the most famous person who visited it?

A) Karan Johar immediately tells that it was Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. He also told that he came to his office, sat for the couple of hours and blessed it.

Q) Does Karan thinks of his father whenever something big happens in his life?

A) Karan tells us that not only in big moments but he thinks of his father alot on a daily basis. He feels that he is watching him over all the time. He misses him at every moment of achievemen and at bad times he wished his father was there to hold him during the times of crisis.

Q) Who would Karan leave his legacy to?

A) Karan says that he had a nurturing quality so off course he is thinking about adopting a child. Also he tells us that he would be extremely dejected if Dharma Productions ends wit him. So he is thinking a lot about it and soon would make a decision. But he adds that having a child does nit necessarily mean that it woukd be his child you would furthur take on his office. Office needs creative persons and he could give this responsibility to any of his staff too.

Things About People Who Love Horror Movies

0

The world is full of nice people made of sweet, spice and everything nice. But the adventure lot, is made of that scary feeling, the chills and everything ghostly.

According to me, movies can be categorized into good, bad, average and horror. Because, horror above everything else, bro, please! You would give up love walks or family talks for your late night horror movies. And that’s just the start…

  1. “What movie do you want to watch?” Anything horror!

Your world has no other genre, just horror. “What movie do you want to watch?” “horror” “Which one did you see the other day?” “Horror” “Which one did you like the most?” “The conjuring.”

Because that’s your answer to everything.

  1. Romance, A BIG NO! Thriller? FINE.

The closest to horror can possibly be a thriller/suspense movie. Not like you’re not a romantic one, but you love the chills during a horror movie more than kisses during a romantic movie.

  1. Dark room, and your favorite blanket. That’s your thing.

Unlike other people, you love dark rooms, haunted places and everything. There is your specific way of watching horror movies, dark room and your favorite blanket, may be one of them.

Lights on while a horror movie is a feel killer!

  1. *Screams during the movie* Come on! You can’t fall for that.

You could be as serious as you want in the day, but when it comes to some movie dates or hangouts to haunted places, messing around with other is your thing.

Your evil prank could be as small as shouting in someone’s ears while watching a movie, or as big as pretending to kill someone on the street, just to frighten your friend. Too much mess!

  1. Too much drama, I can’t breathe!

Drama is one thing, you don’t care much about that. But people who walk into your room and act like they want to watch the movie with you, and then they spoil the movie with their useless drama. Like, “oh God! please stop, I can’t watch it” “Can I please switch on the lights?” and “It’s for adults, we can’t see it.”

Grow up peeps.

  1. Nothing beats the ADRENALINE RUSH!

The best part about it is them scary feels, followed by the adrenaline rush. The movie can scare you to bits but even that wouldn’t stop you from watching it.

  1. *googles* best horror movies; “ watched, watched, yes, yes, OMG are there no movies left in the world”

You have almost seen all horror movies, of all times, and just can’t have enough. Everytime there is a movie plan, you would search for horror movies, and then get disappointed because there are no horror movies left in the world. Sad!

  1. Not many people know that the WBC count actually increases because of watching horror movies!

Yes, it’s scientifically proven that watching horror movies actually increase your WBC count. WBC’s are the soldier cells in your body that protect you from invaders like viruses and bacteria. So watching them does you good, go watch one now.

  1. Going to Bhangarh Fort? I’m in!

All the haunted places and all the graveyards, you want to go to each one of them. There can be no plan made without you, if it includes places like Bhangarh fort in India, etc.

  1. I’m blessed by satan!

Sometimes you feel that you have some different kind of blessing, by satan. Also, when you did something extremely evil ,you’ve been lucky. Weird? Yes.

THE VIKINGS

0

The Vikings had significantly influenced the English language and literature. During the long winters, when people were confined to their homes, Vikings were kept alive for centuries in the hearts of the Scandinavians by the storytellers’. But this Viking culture and their stories began to fade from the people’s mind as most of the people illiterate. During 13th century, Christian churchmen taught the Icelanders to write and this rich heritage got fortunately saved by them. A great blooming of Viking age literature took place through the writings of Snorri Sturluson, an Icelandic writer. Some of his works are Poetic Edda and Prose Edda (about Norse mythology and heroes), The Heimskringla, about the kings of Norway and most likely, Egil’s saga. Thus most of the things we know about the Viking Age comes from these Icelandic collections of poems, tales, sagas and stories. Most of this Norse literature was written in the vernacular, the language of Iceland, which was remarkable for middle age.

Let’s see who the Vikings were actually! Vikings were Norwegians, Swedes and Danes men who raided and traded wide areas of northern, eastern and central Europe during the late 8th to 11th centuries. The Vikings were known as Ascomanni (ashmen) by the Germans and Dene by the Anglo Saxons. They mainly speak the Old Norse Language. They had advanced seafaring skills and attacked many places on the coasts as they were easy to reach with their swift and easily landed ships. They looted and killed the communities so fast that there was no chance for even thinking about any defense or counter attack to be made. They usually raided when they were not busy in farming or plantation and usually came back in time for harvest. The people called Vikings were fearless explorers who quickly make Iceland it’s most important colony and were the first Europeans who actually reached North America under Leif Ericson, heir to Erik the Red and set up short lived settlements. Leif Ericson was the first known explorer to discover America even before Christopher Columbus.

The Vikings were also competent traders and merchants who traded furs, amber, iron, timber at North and silver, gold, silk and spices at the South. The Scandinavians totally changed the history of Ireland, England, France, Russia and other European countries. These aggressive men challenged and conquered many lands terrifying people for a significant period of time. For 300 years, churches and monasteries would pray to be spared the “Wrath of the Norsemen.” Vikings took slaves after raiding who were always welcomed in the slave markets of Constantinople and Baghdad and gained huge profits through slave trading. Their weapons were swords, axe, spears and round shield of protection along with the iron helmet. The most expensive weapon was the Iron sword. The warfare of the Vikings were often propelled by their beliefs in Norse religion, especially Thor and Odin.

Literary Influence:

By the late 9th century, Viking controlled virtually the whole eastern half of England that left a lasting impact on the English language. Many English words originate from Old Norse such as thrift, thrust, they, there, then, skirt, sky, skull, skin, skate, skid, anger, knife, leather etc. All these words reflected their lifestyle and origins. Even the names Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday are named after the old Germanic Gods that both the Anglo Saxons and Vikings believed in. Also several place names on the west coast of Southern France might also be the result of Vikings invasion.

The Vikings also have rich culture in stories, tales and heroic poems. There were two types of Norse poetry: Skaldic and Eddaic. Skaldic wrote verses honouring King or a patron whereas Eddaic poetry could be on any subjects such as humour, romantic, heroic etc.

Social Background:

The society was divided into three classes: Thralls, Karls and Jarls. Thralls were lower class or slaves. Karls were free peasants. Jarls were the aristocracy who engaged in politics, hunting and sports. Women were free and in absence of a male head, an unmarried woman with no son could not only inherit the property but also the position as head of the family. Those type of women were called Baugrygr. Women could divorce her husband and remarry and could also cohabit with a man and have children without marrying him, even if that man is married to someone else which is known as frilla. There was no distinction made between legitimate and illegitimate child. Women had active participation in poetry, medicine and trade. They can also be oracles and priestesses. But these liberties disappeared gradually from 13th century after the introduction of Christianity.

Their cuisines includes meat products, sausages, seafood, bread, dairy products, vegetables , berries and alcoholic drinks like beer, mead, bjorr (a strong fruit juice). They practised various types of sports like wrestling, stone lifting, mountain climbing, swimming, horse fighting, hunting etc. During festive occasions, storytelling, skaldic poetry and music would lit up the atmosphere. They considered music as an important art form and played various instruments like harps, lutes, lyres fiddles.

Vikings had same clothing styles: men wore a thick shirt known as a tunic over trousers. Women wore one long dress, floor or ankle length, with an apron-style dress over it. Underneath these woollen garments, both men and women wore linen undershirts or shifts. There is also slight evidence that Swedish Vikings tattooed themselves.

Therefore, The Vikings Age have such a strong influence in the European, American and Russian culture that even today they influence many creative works which includes novels such as Frans Gunnar Bengtssons’s The Long Ships, movies like The Vikings, Erik The Viking and also a recent popular historical drama TV series called  Vikings. There is also a Marvel comics superhero named Thor, based on the Vikings God and last but not the least there is also a music genre named Viking metal which is a subgenre of heavy metal music.

Review of the movie Lion

0

There is a scene in the flick “Lion”, the drama which is oscar nominated and starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman as protagonists, that stands out more than others. It is that  scene where Saroo, a boy who is just five-year old gets separated from his parents and finds himself alone at Calcutta Railway Terminus, which is nearly a thousand miles away from his home. Shunted by strangers who have no time and patience to hear him out, he goes up on a pole in a hope to spot a known face in the crowd. The furthur sight that awaits him and viewrs is frightening. For as far as is the limit of little boy’s eye can reach , he sees only swarm of busy commuters, a jungle of unknown adults. The visual depiction of that knee-high child lost in the big bad world is overwhelming. It is in that very moment that the hard-hitting reality of his situation truly becomes evident at viewr’s senses.

The movie, as you may know, is made on the true story of Saroo Brierley, who was adopted by a  couple in abroad after he got lost and became estranged from his parents and his home in a  village in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

The protagonist Dev Patel who played the grown up Saroo, is  truely affecting in his  performance. In fact, it is Dev Patel’s most mature and heart-touching performance. In the age of late twenties, Saroo becomes obsessed with finding his real family, and the portions which depict  the internal unease he is grappling with are very effectively delivered by by the actor.

But to be true, Dev Patel and everyone else in the movie including  Nicole Kidman as Saroo’s adoptive mother and Rooney Mara as his loving and supporting girlfriend  are totally eclipsed by Sunny Pawar, the small child who portrayed the young Saroo. He’s a real find, and it  breaks your heart to see him go through those horrific experiences when he’s first lost on the streets of Calcutta.

The in between part of the movie certainly feels a little bit boring, mainly due to Saroo’s obsessive search  using Google Earth  to find the one station out of myriad ones in India that will match with a childhood memory he has in his brain. It is a experience which is fascinating and intriguing.

Watching this film with a soft heart and sensitive brain of  an Indian,   there are bound to be few things that will tear you in agony . Uncomfortable truths that are heart-wrenching, the depiction of apathy towards the poor, the ugly reality of child abuse, and that of ‘white saviour’ element to the story are some of them. But  director Garth Davis’ is accolade worthy as even in its weakest of moments the film seldom feels gratuitous. Unlike so many films of foreign which are set in India.

The thing that doesn’t hold back on is wringing every available drop of emotion from the big pay-off in the end. As it is a true story one knows where things are reaching, but in no way does that lessen the impact of this film. Do not miss it.

What is going on with Deepika Padukone after XXX-The return of Xander Cage, her upcoming movie and a lot more!

0

Q) Does she feel XXX-The return of Xander cage did what it meant to do for her?

A) Deepika feels that this movie did more for her than she expected. It not only gave her exposure of the world as an actress, but also gave her exposure to plethora of different ways of film-making process.

Q) What does she think of inevitable comparisons with Priyanka Chopra?

A) To this Deepika says that she personally does not even think of it It is just unfair to compare her and Priyanka. She even says comparing actress like Anushka and Sonam at one point is ok because they are all headed to same directions and goals in terms of Bollywood. But as she knows Priyanka so deeply on personal level, so she knows Priyanka has entiry different career aim from Deepika, despite both of them being doing things in creative space. Comparing both of them is just a bizzare act for Deepika.

Q) Priyanka seems to have given much commitment to western world, on the other hand Deepika said that she does not want to go and get settled in the west. Her comments?

A) To this question Deepika says that doing a televised show needs more demand of a person’s commitment than a movie. As movies does not have series of serials like televised shows. She also says that this is the time when communication and transportation is lot more easy ,so,for doing stuffs like Hollywood movies does not need one to stay in the West or any sort of physical move.

Q) So was Deepika’s experience got her excited enough to take on another project in the West?

A) “Absolutey yes” is her response for this question. Furthur, she does not take the projects of the West as the new career. She takes it as a new challenge of the journey in which she has already invested so much in her home country.

Q) So, has she found some work which is interesting enough for her to take it on?

A) Yes she has found interesting script both in India and Internationally, but there is no official nod for them.

Q) As she had been away from India for a whole year, is she anxious about her next release i.e. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s flick Padmavati?

A7) She said that she does not look her career as a gane of chess. She also said that she did not think about it once because she dies not think being away for one year is going to affect her next release at all.

Q) Recently there was an incident at the sets of “Padmavati” where some people vandalized the sets, wes she in touch with her director after this mishap?

A) She says that there is no person on earth who is more passionate than Sanjay Leela Bhansali when it comes to movies. She also says that he is a kind of person who will mould this incident in some way or the other and would use it to the advantage of the film.

We wish her all the best for her upcoming movie “Padmavati”

Movie Riview of Rangoon

0

Vishal Bhardwaj works diligently hard to pull off his most ambitious film called “Rangoon”. The director portrays evidently bold love triangle against the backdrop of  freedom struggle of India, but the flick is layered with all delicious dialogue, stupid nods and lilting music that one has come to link with his cinematic world. The film is treat for the eyes  to look at which is supported and greatly powered by excellent lensing by Pankaj Kumar, alongwith clutch of Broadway-style music tracks, and  pitch-perfect locations which serve as a fitting landscape locations for the story to unfold. Problem is is that the plot of the flick in itself is deep and dense and is also overcrowded with many storylines. The initial hour is pure set-up, and it’s set at a leaden rate. What thankfully we get is compelling protagonists in Julia, a courageous  action heroine who is the mistress of a leading producer Russi Billimoria, who once himself was a star but went away from  the arclights after a mishap which happened as an  accident. After that,  we have another man in fatigues, Jamadar Nawab Malik, who is a soldier in the Indian army in the movie whom Julia falls head-over-heels for when he gets  assigned as her military escort on her visit to the India-Burma border to. As this is  Vishal Bhardwaj’s flick, there is more to the characters mentioned, than what is evidently visible on the surface. Julia played by gorgeous Kangana Ranaut is a swashbuckling femme fatale, but is putty in the hands of her mentor. Russi played by Saif Ali Khan, who portrays a British sympathiser,  expresses  affection and love for Julia, but never for a moment he lets her forget that he wholly owns her, as he has ‘bought’ her from her mother at the tender age of 14 for nearly thousand bucks. Nawab played by Shahid Kapoor is showed hiding dangerous secrets of his own that must be immensely guarded. All three actors playing these tough roles are in particularly nice form. Saif Ali Khan imbues Russi with the swagger and the arrogance of an aristocrat from the age and time forties. Shahid Kapoor plays the  patriot with fabulous matured performance, and his understated approach to the part is a fun to watch. But the real pleasure and a scene stealer is Kangana in the role of Julia, as being woman who loves as deeply and fiercely as she argues. For evidence of her incredible performance range just look how she goes from comic and playful to densely emotional in that terrific pre-intermission  scene in which she is drunk in the mud with Shahid.

It is  difficult to take your eyes off her each time she comes on the screen. Her appearance is just rocking. But Rangoon is long more that it should be, and indulgent to the point of butt-numbness. The writing is little clunky, specially  the overwrought climax on a suspension bridge between Burma and India. .As the end appriaches, the film is neither wholly satisfying as a compelling romance, nor as a stirring  drama of patriotism about the portrayal of the Indian National Army in India’s freedom struggle. The director makes an attempt in very ambitious manner to deliver a  epic and there us enough to enjoy. You might want to give it a chance!
