Is Salesman no more required? Online v/s Brick & Mortar

Times have changed and so are our methods. Having surrounded by technology all the time, we are now very much dependent on the machines around us and in return they have made our lives easier. India is now the fastest growing market in e-commerce, China being the 1st and US 2nd.  We have seen a tremendous growth in Internet connectivity in past one decade which has further improved our shopping experience. Now we buy all of it from our laptops ranging from daily groceries to furniture. But is the e-commerce limited to this only? The answer is a big NO. With the growth of e-commerce we have also witnessed the information base available to us on internet grow many folds and hence making us more informed consumer one click at a time.

The latest Forrester Research reports suggest that Indian market of retail through mobile channel only is expected to grow with a whooping CAGR of 31.2%. Amongst all this the one thing that we often ignore is what is happening to the brick and mortar retail of India. While many experts and market pundits suggest that it is slowly dying and may not survive but this is only a macro view. While it is true that the online channel is growing at a fast pace one has to take a closer look at the profitability as well.

Is Salesman no more required? Online v/s Brick & Mortar

There has been a lot of debate regarding this. When the creator of Netscape, Marc Andreesen was asked his views about this, he had something interesting to say. He said that though online retail gives us a better price still in the test of providing something like just in time purchase, it can’t fulfill that. Quoting him “Retail guys are going to go out of business and e commerce will become the place everyone buys. You are not going to have a choice. We’re still pre-death of retail, and we’re already seeing a huge wave of growth. The best in class are going to get better and better. We view this as a long term opportunity.”

So its out now. The glass is half full and half empty.

Online retail focuses more on volume and hence compromises on margins while the local shops and specially the sales man working have got something vital “native intelligence”. This helps them to have that common sense which is the basic understanding of the demographics they are working in. Online channels get this by various reviews that we as customers are putting online for them. Thus there is no doubt that the information base about the various products is much stronger online and is slowly taking over the brick and mortar. So all the busy souls out there which are all held up in conquering the world have resorted to this mode. However some local products that are specific to one geography still requires the touch and feel factor, thus they are sold more through physical shops.

Is Salesman no more required? Online v/s Brick & Mortar

Thus the physical retail is indeed in a danger and hence some amount of regulation is required in this so as to come at par with the fast growing e Commerce. However one cannot ignore the fact that online stores like Amazon are now moving in the physical shops thus establishing the fact that physical retail is here to stay.

0

She has been writing this book since she started to riview. Here is a little about this book which looks back at twenty year experience of Shubhra Gupta on riviewing films!

Idea behind writing this book Fifty Films That Changed Bollywood! Book by Shubhra Gupta!

It came to a point in her life when everybody started asking her when is she going to write a book and she kept telling people that there is nothing more to do than what she is doing i.e. riviewing movies. Then there came a time when she had a little click and thought that the work she had done from last twenty years can be turned into a book and that is how this book came!

Why is it called “fifty films”?Fifty Films That Changed Bollywood! Book by Shubhra Gupta!

Shubhra tells us that it could have been hundred, hundred and fifty, seventy five etc. But because fifty was a handlable number so she chose fifty films. Having said that, she also tells us that it took her year and a half to decide which fifty films she is going to take over twenty years of her career and that trimming was the hardest part for her!

About some movies that are included in the bookFifty Films That Changed Bollywood! Book by Shubhra Gupta!

Every movie included in this book has done something in the Hindi cinema which had not been done before. Mentioning two of them, she says ‘Dil Wale Dulhania Le Jaenge’ was included in this book because this movie took the Hindi cinema out of it’s confinement s. Also, she makes special mention of ‘Kaho Na Pyar Hai’ because Hritikh Roshan was the new age hero and serious news magazine, “India Today” put him on cover page, so it was an obvious choice.

Any special mention?Fifty Films That Changed Bollywood! Book by Shubhra Gupta!

She mentioned the movie “Hero No.1” and says that the actor ‘Govinda’ was at top of his game during the time this movie released and he is one of the underrated heroes of Bollywood. She also says that his trajectory would have been very different if he would have worked with different directors and this was the reason to choose this film.

This book is really interesting if you love Bollywood movies!

Impact of Automation in Banking Industry

0

Technology, by its basic underlying concept was supposed to make things easier in a more pre-defined manner such that processes can be done in a sequence and the desired results can be obtained. But if one stop seeing the effects of it on the macro level and goes into the details, it is quite evident that use of technology in work place has had both the good as well as the bad effects. Banking Industry, being one of the most regulated industries on the globe has seen many changes in the way of working in the past few decades. From being solely driven by work force, now more and more technology involvement has led to automation of services. But only the technology or automation inside the sector cannot be blamed. Because of development of many ancillaries as well which gave better internet penetration (costs slashed to almost nil as compared to the starting), it has further motivated the customers to go towards more technology-savvy methods.

Banking industry has evolved a lot. Gone are the times when one has to go to bank physical branch to make deposits, now we have cash deposit machines to do so. Economies all across the globe are going more and more cashless and the trend of online shopping has increased at an unbelievable pace! In a recent data released, around 45% of people worry about the risk of unemployment and this is basically caused by the effect of automation. Long gone are times when humans could have applied for a job, researchers say that one time will come when job openings will have the line “Humans need not apply”.

Impact of Automation in Banking Industry

But why this happening is a real question. On one hand where we say that human intervention is essential for certain roles like a relationship manager in a bank, but isn’t it a top management position? Why are we even looking at those? If one has to see, then the primary focus must be on the lower end jobs. We can divide this into the variable hour’s employment and the fixed employment.  What has been hit the worst is the lower jobs where the employer could identify clearly the money spent on human capital, skilled in nature. This phenomenon is called as  de-skilling. With the intervention of machines and technology, one needs only the lower skilled people to do machine operating work. This saves cost for the institution and leads also to more efficient results. Now in this case, the people who were previously engaged in the same job gets shifted a notch up and become semi-skilled. Now the same job as in question also requires lesser number of people thus leading to loss of jobs.

Impact of Automation in Banking Industry

The effect of technology is higher even for the people in top management. They have to be aware of all the new methods because the clients want more cost savings and want to in pace with the world. Now for a person involved in a top management, they have resources and knowledge to learn more. Hence the semi-skilled person is the one who is at a real loss.

  • The increase in technology is directly proportional to the need for skilled labour.
  • The increase in technology requires increase in skills of middle level jobs as well.
  • Low skilled jobs are created but are mainly for an outsourcing purpose and provide for cheap labour.

Technology Changing The Face Of Bank Offerings

Technology has completely transformed how the banks used to work. Now they are moving at a very fact pace towards digitalization of banking services. Most of the services that are provided by the banks can now be accessed through online medium. Even if we divide the services into regional banks serving mainly the retail customers and whole sale banks catering to corporate needs, technology has found a way in it.

Regional Banks:

If we are to consider the current state of employment in bank branches, reports tell that nearly only one-third of the previous work force is employed now. The banking sector approach to business has also transformed from what it was initially. The focus was previously laid on fulfilling requirements but now it is more on customer service and improving the status of the same. More focus is now laid upon profitability fo the bank as well as that of a customer which helps in nurturing the relationship. Clearly for purposes like these including cross selling and up selling, a high school graduate is not enough and one needs to have people with better skill sets.

Moreover, with digitalization, services are becoming more complex for the operators and hence the educational qualifications are increasing tremendously. To beat the immense competition, banks need to stay connected to their customers to insure stickiness and that requires constant communication which way easier by the way of automated messages, email etc… There is no doubt that human touch is required in the form of relationship managers but there is only a little they can do.

Wholesale Banks:

Wholesale banks largely serve to the business houses and corporate clients and thus have a completely different set of services as compared to the regional banks. The needs of this customer segment differ majorly both in terms of the type of products and their monetary value.

The effect of technology has not only been on the banks but also the businesses that they serve to. The business in 1980’s were going over other countries and increase of globalization further helped to speed up the process. Thus there were risks like foreign currency investments, trade risks etc… These services were possible to be provided on through technology. The wide range of services to be provided thus required technical skills and requirement of MBSs increased drastically. Services like risk reduction and analytics, loan analysis, credit management also caught up soon.

Those banks who could not support these functions internally then went on to a cheaper source “outsourcing of activities”. Thus development of IT sector got a new pace.

“I love hitting nasty men” says Sonakshi Sinha!

0

Sonakshi Sinha has changed ways people looked at plus-sized women. Not just that, her choice of films is now a different taste in Bollywood. These answers will let you peep about her thinking on film industry and her personal taste.

Q) Does it feel good hitting men on-screen?"I love hitting nasty men" says Sonakshi Sinha!

A) It was her desire to hit her detractors who did bodyshaming and other men who had done wrong to females. She is ecstatic doing films in which she has hit “nasty people” as it calmed her frustration.

Q) Some actresses say that they would not ask about a content or a role if they have a big male-star opposite them. Had Sonakshi ever been in that place?"I love hitting nasty men" says Sonakshi Sinha!

A) She tells us that unfortunately in this industry when the actress is new, her success is measured by the fact who she is cast opposite to. So initially, it did happen to Sonakshi as well. But as now audiences too have been evolved, the content and role lies first in priority to her.

Q) Having said , that she is now evolved, Is now she a very different actor as she was in ‘Dabang’?"I love hitting nasty men" says Sonakshi Sinha!

A) She says she treats her every film like her first and so she is same even today as she was by the time shr did Dabang(her first movie)

Q) So she is the same actress, is she a same person too? Or film Industry has changed her?"I love hitting nasty men" says Sonakshi Sinha!

A) Sonakshi says that from day one she she had no method of carrying her profession or box-office success which she is continuing even today. So she believes that as an actor and as a person she has not changed. Even her friends tell her so and she agrees to them!

Q) What is the one thing in film-industry that Sonakshi would call “ab bus” to?

A) Pay disparity between actor and actress is what she is pissed-off about. And other thing at which she wants to put a full stop to are “non-punctual prople” in the film indudstry.

Movie Riview of Badrinath Ki Dulhania!

0

Last film of Varun and Alia (Humty Sharma ki Dulhania) was powered by the incredible chemistry both shared on-screen. The story was cliché to some extent, young love burdened with parental opposition, but was hit because the flick was elevated by its two leads. Having a twist in the story, this flick (Badrinath ki dulhania) keeps them apart for a chunk of it’s running time. A lovable simpleton ‘Badri’ played by Varun Dhawan, young lad from Jhansi is a portrayal of a character who wears his heart on his sleeve. He falls for Vadehi, played by Alia Bhatt, a quirky girl from Kota whom ‘Badri’ meets at wedding and proposes for marriage. Movie Riview of Badrinath Ki Dulhania!, Also, she is filled with enthusiasm with big career ambitions and laughs at face of Badri, regarding his class 10th pass qualification. Vaidehi is reluctant for marriage and even after knowing this Badri persues her relentlessly. Although she gets amused by Badri, but remains uninterested in marriage, these scenes in the flick are cute. Slowly the movie separates these protagonists, and scenes where they are not together drags. The writing looses it’s grip on the audience in the second half, when the scene moves to Singapore and the film becomes less sure-footed. Movie Riview of Badrinath Ki Dulhania! Multiple scenes here feels irrelevant and boring that one cannot help but cringe. There is a stupid scene where presumably gay men feels Badri and rip his shirt in passion. The good thing in the flick is that it showed interest in highlighting the point that woman have right to choose career over marriage but the director seems to bite more than he could chew. The supporting cast is good and the performance of Sahil Vaid as a happless friend of Badri is praise worthy.Movie Riview of Badrinath Ki Dulhania! But it is the leads who are burdened to carry the film. Alia’s character is not very responsible, but her honesty in playing her role makes it hard for viewrs to hold a grudge against her. However, it is Varun who walks with top honours. Going from an entitled young man to one who is more sensitive to women and understands them, he plays the part with right innocence and wins over his audience. The writing at places is clumsy, but you can watch it once!

THE NORMAN CONQUEST: ROLE IN THE ENGLISH ECONOMY

0

The Norman conquest of England was led by William, Duke of Normandy in 11th century which brought one of the greatest political, administrative and social changes in England. This brutal conquest had begun in the reign of Edward, last king of the Anglo-Saxon royal line. The Anglo Saxon aristocracy was disgraced and their assets were snatched away. Even, today this is one of the sensitive subjects among many people. Even today; some supporters of Brexit use the language of conquest to describe nation’s domination by faceless European institutions. It was a holocaust for the people of England.

THE NORMAN CONQUEST: ROLE IN THE ENGLISH ECONOMY

There were various complex reasons for the invasion. Edward, the king of England died without any heir thus rising confusing for the successor. His brother in law, Harold took over the throne but he was very weak and unsuitable to rule. William, Duke of Normandy believed that he was the rightful heir and invaded from France with a large army. He killed Harold at the Battle of Hastings and was crowned on Christmas in 1066. The Anglo Saxon government was demolished resulting in removal of officials from all high class government offices and church. Despite, the short term damage due to destruction of capital, the conquest helped the English economy a lot.

THE NORMAN CONQUEST: ROLE IN THE ENGLISH ECONOMY

The Norman Conquest made England. There was a huge level of improvement in trade patterns, institutions, investments and commerce that sparked a long economic boom in England whose effects prevails even in today’s England. The financial system developed and Jews introduced a network of credit links between his new English lands and his French ones. The Normans took some important policy decisions and spent a lot in infrastructure. All churches, monasteries and big buildings before the invasion were demolished and built in a new continental style. New designed castles and palaces came up. The infrastructure funds were collected by imposing higher taxes on peasants which forced them to work harder. All these boost the English economy and increased the total wealth of England compared to other countries of Europe. Around 350 markets existed by the end of the 12th century.

THE NORMAN CONQUEST: ROLE IN THE ENGLISH ECONOMY

There was construction of a restricted “forest law” and The Norman trial of combat was introduced for the criminal cases and the old Anglo Saxon laws were also kept along with it. There was also an increased use of the inquest procedure—the testimony sworn by neighbours, for administrative purposes and in judicial cases. William also modified the structure and character of the church in England. He replaced all the Anglo-Saxon bishops, except Wulfstan of Dorchester. Intermarriages were also allowed between Norman men and English woman. The major impact was elimination of slavery in England. There were about 28,000 slaves as mentioned in Domesday Book in 1086. By the 12th century, slavery was completely ended.

THE NORMAN CONQUEST: ROLE IN THE ENGLISH ECONOMY

Though there was specialization of labor and employment opportunities increased, the effect on the North was brutal. People in the North had adherence more with Scots and Scandinavians, so they started a rebellion against the Normans. However, William crushed them mercilessly and consequently; the Southern England became richer than the Northern. The North was not only relatively poor but also had worst climate and it was far away from market and trade. Thus, the growth of the country was unequal.

THE NORMAN CONQUEST: ROLE IN THE ENGLISH ECONOMY

However, the most unfortunate impact was the overshadow of the Old English language due to introduction of the Anglo Norman. Many French elements and words enter the English language and names of men, women, and few places began to change with time. But all these undergo a significant change after the Scandinavian invasion.
