The weirdest festivals in the world

0

The world is full of amusements. It always presents you with many astonishing facts. Some festivals celebrated around the world are so weird that we cannot even imagine that such festivals exist! Here are a few of them.

Wife Carrying World Championship — Finland

The weirdest festivals in the world

Wife carrying or eukonkanto in Finnish, is a sport in Sonkajärvi, Finland, originated in 1992. The origin of this tradition is not known exactly. But today, wife carrying is practiced around the world. Participants are allowed to carry their wives in a variety of ways — including piggyback, fireman’s carry or Estonian-style, where the wife hangs upside-down with her legs around her husband’s shoulders. They carry her across a 253.5-meter track riddled with obstacles. The prize is awarded based on the wife’s weight in beer.

The Baby Jumping Festival — Castrillo de Murcia, Spain

The weirdest festivals in the world

Known in Spanish as El Colacho, this festival happens sixty days after Easter. The Baby Jumping Festival is a baptismal ceremony wherein babies who were born over the last year are absolved of sin. The religious custom dates back to the early 1600s. Men dressed in traditional “devilish” clothing terrorize the crowd before running down the street and jumping over the babies who have been carefully laid on pillows. No injuries have been reported till date. But the Catholic higher-ups frown upon the ritual.

Mud Festival — Boryeong, South Korea

The weirdest festivals in the world

This annual festival occurs in July in the village of Boryeong, 200 kilometers south of Seoul. The festival is not historic by any means — the first one took place in 1998 — and it was originally created as a marketing event for Boryeong mud cosmetics. The mud from the Boryeong mud flats is considered rich in natural minerals and is used to make beauty products. The two-week promotional event is now popular with locals and tourists alike. Notable festivities include a mud pool, mudslides, mud prison and mud skiing.

World Toe Wrestling Championships — England, UK

The weirdest festivals in the world

The location of the World Toe Wrestling Championships varies, but the practice originated in the village of Wetton, Staffordshire, in the 1970s. It was born out of the desire for the UK to have its own championship in some type of sport. Just like arm wrestling, two people go up against one another in each match, which is won by the best of three. Players can only take part in the tournament after a thorough toe examination by a qualified nurse.

La Tomatina — Buñol, Valencia, Spain

The weirdest festivals in the world

The Spanish Tomato Festival has run annually in August during a weeklong celebration in Buñol since 1945, when a rowdy crowd took the tomatoes from a vegetable stall and started a food fight. The hour-long tomato fight used up an estimated 145,000 kg of tomatoes in 2015. Since 2013 La Tomatina has been a ticketed event to limit participants to just 20,000. Before then, up to 50,000 guests had been reportedly involved in the food fight. After an hour of free-for-all tomato tossing, trucks spray down the streets and many participants wash themselves in the pool of tomatoes.

Air Guitar World Championship — Oulu, Finland

The weirdest festivals in the world

The Air Guitar World Championship has been held annually in Oulu, Finland, since 1996 as part of the Oulu Music Video Festival. What started as a joke has turned into a serious draw for the event. Participants must play air guitar on stage in two rounds with each lasting at least one minute (one song is chosen by the participant and one by the organizer), they must play air guitar only (no drums, piano, etc.) and are scored out of 6.0. The ideology behind the event is a simple one: ‘Wars would end and all the bad things would go away if everyone just played air guitar.’

So, if you are on a world tour, make sure that you definitely visit these places and enjoy the festivals. Make a bag full of memories and cherish them for your lifetime.

Dabbawalas – The Lunch Delivery Men!

0

Home – made food always has a special impact on one’s physical and mental health. But in today’s world, people do not have enough time to enjoy the delicious home food. They are always in a busy and hectic lifestyle where they spend lots and lots of money just for food. But they never get that satisfaction, which the home-made food gives. They just have to adjust with that hotel food and fill their tummies.

The Dabbawalas

The dabbawalas are those who constitute a lunchbox delivery system that delivers hot lunch from homes and restaurants to people at work in India, especially in Mumbai. The lunchboxes(dabbas) are collected in the late morning and delivered to the respective persons using bicycles and railway trains, and returned empty by afternoon. Meal suppliers in Mumbai also pay them to ferry lunchboxes with ready-cooked meals from central kitchens to customers and back .

Birth of the Idea

About 125 years ago, a Parsi banker wanted to have home cooked food in office and gave this responsibility to the first ever Dabbawala. Many people liked the idea and the demand for Dabba delivery increased. It was all informal and individual effort in the beginning. But in 1890, the visionary Mahadeo Havaji Bachche saw the opportunity and started the lunch delivery service in its present team-delivery format with 100 Dabbawalas.

Later, a charitable trust was registered in 1956 under the name of Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Trust. The commercial arm of this trust was registered in 1968 as Mumbai Tiffin Box Supplier’s Association. The current president of the association is Bhau Saheb Karbande and Subhash Talekar is the spokesperson.

Dabbawalas - The Lunch Delivery Men!

The efficient coding system

As the city grew, the demand for Dabba delivery grew too. The coding system created during the initial stage is still prominent in 21st century. Initially it was simple colour coding but now since Mumbai is widely spread metro with 3 local train routes, coding has also evolved into alpha numeric characters.

Lunch boxes are marked in several ways:

  1. Abbreviations for collection points
  2. Colour code for starting station
  3. Number for destination station
  4. Markings for handling dabbawala at destination, building and floor

A colour-coding system identifies the destination and recipient. Each dabbawala is required to contribute a minimum capital in kind, in the form of two bicycles, a wooden crate for the tiffins, white cotton kurta-pyjamas, and the white Gandhi cap. Each month there is a division of the earnings of each unit. Fines are imposed for alcohol, tobacco, being out of uniform, and absenteeism.

A collecting dabbawala, usually on bicycle, collects dabbas either from a worker’s home or from the dabba makers. As many of the carriers are of limited literacy (the average literacy of Dabbawalas is that of 8th grade), the dabbas have some sort of distinguishing mark on them, such as a colour or group of symbols.

The dabbawala then takes them to a sorting place, where he and other dabbawalas sort the lunch boxes into groups. The grouped boxes are put in the coaches of trains, with markings to identify the destination of the box. The markings include the railway station to unload the boxes and the destination building delivery address. Some modern infrastructure improvements such as the Navi Mumbai Metro are not used in the supply chain, as cabins do not have the capacity for hundreds of tiffins.

At each station, boxes are handed over to a local dabbawala, who delivers them. The empty boxes are collected after lunch or the next day and sent back to the respective houses. The dabbawalas also allow for delivery requests through SMS.

Where do these dabbawalas come from?

Most dabbawalas are related to each other, belong to the Varkari sect of Maharashtra, and come from the same small village near Pune. Tiffin distribution is suspended for five days each March as they go home for the annual village festival.

Dabbawalas - The Lunch Delivery Men!

The perfect Waalas!

Each dabbawala, regardless of role, is paid around 8,000 rupees per month. Between 1,75,000 and 2,00,000 lunch boxes are moved each day by 4,500 to 5,000 dabbawalas. They are self-employed. The union initiation fee is 30,000 rupees, which guarantees a 5,000-rupee monthly income and a job for life. The 150 rupee a month fee provides for delivery six days a week.

It is frequently claimed that dabbawalas make less than one mistake in every six million deliveries! However, this is only an estimation and is not from a rigorous study.

However thanks to these dabbawalas who struggle a lot just to help people have their delicious home food. It’s only because of them that the Mumbai waalas are enjoying their work with yummy food!!

Meditation – For a Balanced Mind

0

With the hectic pace and demands of modern life, many people feel stressed and over-worked. It often feels like there is just not enough time in the day to get everything done. Our stress and tiredness make us unhappy, impatient and frustrated. It can even affect our health. We are often so busy we feel there is no time to stop and meditate! But meditation actually gives you more time by making your mind calmer and more focused. A simple ten or fifteen minute breathing meditation can help you to overcome your stress and find some inner peace and balance.

Spiritual Practice

Meditation can also help us to understand our own mind. We can learn how to transform our mind from negative to positive, from disturbed to peaceful, from unhappy to happy. Overcoming negative minds and cultivating constructive thoughts is the main purpose of meditation. This is a profound spiritual practice you can enjoy throughout the day, not just while seated in meditation. Eventually, we will be able to stay happy all the time, even in the most difficult circumstances.

True Happiness

The purpose of meditation is to make our mind calm and peaceful. If our mind is peaceful, we will be free from worries and mental discomfort, and so we will experience true happiness; but if our mind is not peaceful, we will find it very difficult to be happy, even if we are living in the very best conditions. If we train in meditation, our mind will gradually become more and more peaceful, and we will experience a purer and purer form of happiness.

Meditation - For a Balanced Mind

Usually we find it difficult to control our mind. It seems as if our mind is like a balloon in the wind – blown here and there by external circumstances. If things go well, our mind is happy, but if they go badly, it immediately becomes unhappy. Such fluctuations of mood arise because we are too closely involved in the external situation. We are like a child making a sandcastle who is excited when it is first made, but who becomes upset when it is destroyed by the incoming tide.

Training in Meditation

By training in meditation, we create an inner space and clarity that enables us to control our mind regardless of the external circumstances. Gradually we develop mental equilibrium, a balanced mind that is happy all the time, rather than an unbalanced mind that oscillates between the extremes of excitement and despondency.

If we train in meditation systematically, eventually we will be able to eradicate from our mind the delusions that are the causes of all our problems and suffering. In this way, we will come to experience a permanent inner peace, known as “liberation” or “nirvana”. Then, day and night in life after life, we will experience only peace and happiness.

Meditation is that which gives you deep rest. Meditation is an activity in which the practitioner just sits and allows the mind to dissolve. The rest in meditation is deeper than the deepest sleep that you can ever have. When the mind becomes free from agitation, is calm and serene and at peace, meditation happens.

Meditation - For a Balanced Mind

Benefits of Meditation

There are numerous benefits of meditation. It is an essential practice for mental hygiene.

  1. A calm mind
  2. Good concentration
  3. Clarity of perception
  4. Improvement in communication
  5. Blossoming of skills and talents
  6. An unshakeable inner strength
  7. Healing
  8. The ability to connect to an inner source of energy
  9. Relaxation, rejuvenation, and good luck are all natural results of meditating regularly.

Advantages of Meditation

  1.  Today’s levels of stress makes meditation a no-brainer. It helps us achieve that all-important work-life balance, enhances mental clarity and decision-making skills and nurtures trust, creativity, innovation and intuition.
  2. Improves our relationships. We develop a pleasant, sociable personality, and are able to accept people as they are. These are important skills in any sphere, more so at the, workplace, where teamwork is crucial.
  3. It gives a deep sense of health and well-being as, regularly practiced, the mind, body and spirit benefit immensely. The deep rest it offers makes us more dynamic in activity.
  4. If you are one of those who find forgiveness difficult, then regular meditation is just the ticket for you!

The rest in meditation is deeper than the deepest sleep that you can ever have. When the mind becomes free from agitation, is calm and serene and at peace, meditation happens.

0
MBA Colleges

It natural that you can enter a college only after graduating the high-school. Consequently, these institutions are connected to each other as one of them is a continuation of the other. However, young people, who enter a college or university, face a variety of problems as getting used to careless school life they have to get accustomed to many new circumstances they experience at college. Let’s see what changes in lives of students who leave high school and enter college and how they can cope with these changes.

  1. You know every classmate in high school whereas you can not learn everyone who studies with you in college. You are not restricted to one group as you can select different courses and see different people during every class.
  2. You live next to your parents in high school and far from them in college. It happens very rarely that students can enter a local college and stay home. Usually, they have to reside with other students in the hostel or rental.
  3. High-school classes begin in the morning and last for the whole day while college may provide you with additional sleep as you can build your schedule yourself. You should not go to college for the whole day or sit there for hours to be an A-grade student. It is enough to complete all the assignments and cope with paper writing.
  4. You should learn every subject in school and select ones you prefer in college. It makes college education more directed and interesting as even a topic of a custom essay can be chosen yourself.
  5. In high school your time frames are determined by others whereas in college you manage your time yourself. You are not told when to come and leave, so at the beginning, students fail to manage their time right and waste it on useless activities.
  6. In high school teachers use books written by others whereas in college educators rely on the materials developed by themselves. These can be books written by professors or materials they used writing thesis. Usually, these are only credible sources from reputable scholars.
  7. In high school, you were told what to write down whereas in college you should have excellent note-taking skills. You will be hardly told where to start writing or put a dot. Students write down a gist of the lecture themselves to be able to restore it for the next class. That is why it is important to learn note-taking and writing tips in advance.
  8. High-school homework was little and required a short time period to complete it. College assignments may take months to be completed and are long-term. Students may spend several months writing paper or use some services like customwritingbee.com/ and defend it within an hour only.
  9. In high school, you are forced to attend classes and in college, you need to visit them. Nobody will control your attendance by calls or reminders as if you fail to be a regular attendant you might be expelled.
  10. In high school you are closed within the dominating social group. In college you choose the circle of communication yourself. The number of people to socialize with grows in the mathematical progression so you have a wider choice to choose interlocutors.
  11. High-school teachers prepare lessons for average students whereas in college it is not enough to complete a bare minimum to be academically successful. In college academic success opens many interesting opportunities for students including scholarships, grants, student exchange programs etc.
  12. High-school is available for everyone whereas college can be afforded by much fewer learners. You are really lucky and hard-working if you deserve a scholarship and study free of charge in college as in most cases people pay money for the tuition from their pocket or even have to take debts to get a degree.
