BHIM : Digital India Takes Another Step

2

Ever since demonetization has hit Indian economy, there has been a great push towards digital payments. After all, who would want to stand in bank queues for hours, when technology can make payment as simple as being on your finger-tip. With applications like paytm, SBI pays already in the market doing business. 30th of December, marked yet another push to the idea of cashless economy, by Prime-minister himself rolling out application BHIM (Bharat Interface For Money), to enable fast, secure and reliable cashless payments. Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), this basic UPI app beats all other applications in terms of simplicity.

Aadhaar Payment

Being named in the honor of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, this application also focuses on the empowerment of Dalits. It’s yet to be launched feature of Aadhaar Payment, enables a transaction with just a fingerprint impression. Thus, thumb impression, which used to symbolize illiteracy, with the help of this technology will now be seen as an instrument of personal empowerment.

UPI (Unified Payment Interface)

Talking about the actual working of the application, this uses UPI platform for a transaction, i.e., bank account number of the payee is not required to transfer funds. Rather, mobile number or virtual payment address is sufficient to pay money. Now, some may be wondering, what this UPI is after all? Well, UPI (Unified Payment Interface) allows making instant payments using mobile phones as a primary device for a transaction, through a creation of a virtual payment address, which is an alias for your bank account. On BHIM app, this would be or <userid@upi>. This used, serves as the primary address to send or request money through other ids linked to it. Transaction in BHIM app can also be made with non-UPI supported banks using IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) and MMID (Mobile Money Identity).

supporting BHIM

The list of the banks that are supporting BHIM are, Allahabad Bank, Andhra Bank, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Catholic Syrian Bank, Central Bank of India, DCB Bank, Dena Bank, Federal Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, IDBI Bank, IDFC Bank, Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, IndusInd Bank, Karnataka Bank, Karur Vysya Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Punjab National Bank, RBL Bank, South Indian Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, State Bank of India, Syndicate Bank, Union Bank of India, United Bank of India, and Vijaya Bank.

So, does it mean that it becomes yet another payment application on the store? No, its simplicity and ease of usage make it beat all the other applications. Also, since BHIM is a government authenticated application, it avoids any reliance on third party players. It also ranks high on safety by providing 3 levels of authentication (normal net banking applications have only 2 levels of authentication).

do you want to use it now?

Well, having heard about it so much, do you want to use it now? It’s simple. Go to your play store, search “BHIM” and download the application. Install and choose a language (currently option is available between English and Hindi only, but soon other regional languages are also planned to be added). Verify your phone number using SMS. Now, enter a 4-digit passcode to open this application (this is just for opening the application and users need not confuse with any bank pin). Now, to start the bank account linking process, select a bank and link a bank account with BHIM, which you want to use for the transaction. For now, only one bank account can be linked, and the flexibility to add multiple bank accounts have yet not been provided. Next, set a UPI pin for the bank account, which will be required for authentication when you would be wanting to make any payment. After setting this, you are all set to go! Select between send, request, scan/pay options and perform the required operation. But remember, transactions are possible only between verified phone numbers. And it has a limit of Rs.10,000 for one transaction, and up to Rs.25,000 within 24 hours. Currently, it is available for android users only. IOS users might have to wait until the next release.

So, what are you waiting for? Let 2016 take away the worries of going cashless. As 2017 sees a new dawn of digital India, with the launching of government approved application, “BHIM”. As said,

“Digital India takes the power, to empower!”

Morgan Freeman whose words speaks louder than action

0

Certain films attract the masses for the commercial element in it..some for the plot, and some of the performances of the leads in the film. But one person, who can subdue any other defective element or dominating component in a film in which he is a part of, is none other than MORGAN FREEMAN, ( the king of narration, period.)…and he does this with ease by virtue of his mindblowing baritone which enhances an extraordinary narration, to such a level that, cast Morgan Freeman in your film, and he will do the rest to appeal the masses. Let’s lookback at some of the best performances from the legendary actor all these years…

1) Morgan Freeman as Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding in “The Shawshank Redemption”

Stephen King wrote this character as a white Irishman, but Freeman’s aura of honesty and his compassionate voice got him the job. Given a quintessential narrator role, Freeman anchors the story in person as a Shawshank lifer, who forms vital relationships inside prison walls but

struggles on the outside after decades spent incarcerated, but that’s his best work in the film

because the redemption is his. This role turned to be the best role he has ever portrayed all-time. He made this film serve as a standard film of inspiration and study for voice over narration concept.

2) Morgan Freeman as Detective Lt. William Somerset in “Se7en”

The formula is there. Headstrong, reckless young cop partners with the finicky almost retired old guy. Only this film and its characters are much more than that, thanks to top-notch acting. On the trail of a sadistic serial killer, Freeman and Brad Pitt show dynamic chemistry, but it’s Freeman’s methodical perceptive and almost scholarly performance, in both the suspenseful action sequences and the quieter scenes, that steals the show.

3) Morgan Freeman as Hoke Colburn in “Driving Miss Daisy”

Spanning decades religions cultures and more, this story proves the people from different worlds can find common ground. After originating the role in the Pulitzer prize-winning play, Freeman gave an impressively subtle performance in the film as Miss Daisy’s kind, wise and patient chauffeur. With gestures and facial expressions, sometimes seeing more than words, this movie propelled Freeman to leading man status and earned him his second Oscar nomination.

4) Morgan Freeman as Eddie “Scrap-Iron” Dupris in “Million Dollar Baby”

Freeman’s got one of Hollywood’s best voices and it’s that voice that narrates the story. Through the eyes of a former fighter in a straightforward and emotional way, this tale is one where the boxing is incidental and the relationships are everything. Partnering again with Clint Eastwood, Freeman is a friend and confidant and not the film’s focus, but his unwavering support for the main players earned him his first Oscar.

5) Morgan Freeman as Sergeant Major John Rawlins in “Glory”

Outlining the tribulations of the first all African-American Civil War Unit, this movie tracks the bravery of those, forgotten by history, and its strength comes from supporting players like

Denzel Washington, Andre Braugher and Freeman himself. All three transcend Hollywood stereotypes about African-Americans and give tremendously distinctive performances. As the kindly reasonable father figure, Freeman’s John Rollins is a born leader who could even moonlight as a pastor.

6) Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox in the “Batman trilogy”

One thing the big films do right is featuring veteran actors in vital supporting roles. Freeman, while providing Bruce Wayne with the gadgets he requires to be  Batman, acts as a father figure and

sometimes an ethical center. With full of warm class and even some comic moments, Freeman’s understated performance proves why he was the only actor ever considered for the portrayal of this character.

7) Morgan Freeman as Fast Black in “Street Smart”

This was Freeman’s break into Hollywood. Portraying the role of a morally bankrupt fast-talking pimp, Freeman takes this film to a different level with his Oscar-nominated performance, making it the pivotal reason for making this film a watchable one. He blew everyone by surprise by enacting a highly ruthless and intimidating character, which at some points in the film appears charismatic too. Although the movie did not garner rave reviews, Morgan became too good to be remembered for his role.

8) Morgan Freeman as Joe Louis Clark in the film “Lean on Me”

This was one of the performances which showcased Freeman’s screen presence’s effect. Portraying the role of Joe Clark, a city administrator, Freeman embodies himself with rousing speeches, unflinching discipline, and an aggression via a baseball bat, to revive a school’s condition by unconventional methods of motivation. Freeman’s simplicity lends authority and style to this tough love story about someone who goes to any extreme for his objective.

9) Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela in the film “Invictus”

Image result for morgan freeman as nelson mandela

This was one of the best characters portrayed by Morgan Freeman. It is said that Nelson Mandela himself handpicked Morgan Freeman to portray him in the biopic. Although Freeman might sound not being the central character of this film, he is the vital reason behind carrying the inspirational plot till the end by his appealing diction and performance. With nobility, grace, and confidence, Freeman etched the idea of racial integration visionary of Nelson Mandela in the minds of the viewers and earned an Oscar nomination for this role.

10) Morgan Freeman as Ned Logan in the film “Unforgiven”

Image result for morgan freeman as ned logan

Packing up in a cowboy hat and a shotgun, Freeman steps into this class Western Oscar-winning film. The film had a star-studded cast comprising Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, and Richard Harris. Despite the presence of such heavyweights in the film, Morgan Freeman shines and even surpasses the rest portraying a retired gunslinger Ned Logan. Had any other actor been cast other than Morgan Freeman for this role, the character could have gone away as a mere sidekick. But, with Morgan at the helm, Logan went on to become a character etched everlastingly in the memory of the viewers.

And thus folks, I present you a list of the top 10 performances of the legendary 78-year-old actor from Memphis, who still continues to conquer our hearts every time he steps in, by his vulnerable diction and proves that at times your words can speak more than your actions!

SURVIVOR

0

The word Youth stands for Young, energetic, talented, innovative etc. The youth of a country depicts the future of any country. But it’s a harsh reality of our country that the youth of our country is becoming short temper, egoistic, arrogant etc. These changes in the youth have led to various issues one of them is acid attack. According to BBC it claims that 1500 attacks are reported worldwide every year.

Since we know that Science along with Mother Nature has given us so many things which is making our life easier. Through science only we get to know about various acids and bases that are used on our daily life. But now people are using in another forms like people are splashing a person or object with acid in order to deface or kill them.

Instances of acid attacks are no longer a rarity in India. Despite this, there are no specific laws that deal with this heinous crime. While these attacks can be attributed to various factors such as the social weakness of women in a male-dominated society, the situation is exacerbated by the general neglect of the lawmakers. As acid is inexpensive and easily available, it serves as an ideal weapon for the perpetrators. So far, there is no separate law to deal with acid attacks. Cases are registered under sections 320 (causing emasculation and disfigurement), 322 and 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 326 (causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means). Under these sections, the accused could be sent to jail for a period of one year to 10 years. Further, as this offence is bailable in certain situations, the punishment does not act as a sufficient deterrent in most cases. The crime of acid attack has a gender dimension in India, with majority of the victims being women.

We all are aware about what acid is and what the effect of acid on our body is.  Acid melts flesh and even the bones of a person, it causes an unparalleled degree of pain to the victim and leaves her mutilated and scarred as well as gives permanent disabilities at times such as blindness. Firstly acid causes the skin tissue to dissolve, which often results in the bones becoming exposed beneath the flesh; at times it can even melt the bone. When acid comes into contact with the eyes, it can permanently damage these organs. Many acid attack victims may have survived, but by paying the price of losing one or both eyes. The victims are traumatized physically, socially and psychologically. Recovering from the trauma of an attack takes time, and even more time is needed for the victims to adjust to their disfigurements. They often become isolated and ostracized in society; the scars left by the acid going beyond just the skin.
This further damages the victims’ self-esteem, self-confidence and seriously undermines their professional and personal future. Women who have survived acid attacks suffer in their attempts to live and function in normal society. They have great difficulty in finding partners, if unmarried, and finding work or sustaining a career.

One question that came to my mind after reading all these facts that why do people engage in such vicious acts? Unfortunately, there are no straightforward answers to this question. There are a number of different reasons why individuals commit this heinous crime. Many of these reasons are egotistical: men who cannot handle rejection from a girl, or in the case of a woman seeking divorce from an abusive husband, the man’s fear of being dishonored in society. Aside from this, the less privileged classes suffer economically and have poor literacy rates. They perhaps do not understand the severity and damage an acid attack can have on a victim’s life.

But there are so many in this world who have gone out of the way.  One of them is Laxmi In 2005, when Delhi resident Laxmi was 15 years old, she turned down a marriage proposal from a 32 year old man.
Slighted by her rejection, the man (with help from a friend) attacked Laxmi while she was out shopping one day. They poured acid on her face and arms. After fighting with determination now she is the director of Chhanv Foundation, an NGO dedicated to help the survivors of acid attacks in India. Laxmi received a 2014 International Women of Courage award by US First Lady Michelle Obama. She was also chosen as the NDTV Indian of the Year. Now she is also married to Alok dixit(a journalist turned social activist ) and  she is a mother of 7 month old Pihu.

This heartbreaking crime can be reduce only by Better laws and stricter punishment. But the determination of the victim can be biggest slap on the accused face.

Imagination is a more valuable asset than experience

0

Imagination, what is imagination? Is it thinking out of the box? Yes, Imagination nothing but thinking out of the box. Every person can think but, Is he/she thinking imaginary way or not? Only the question.

Knowledge is not a big issue for the imagination. With the help of imagination, we gain a lot of knowledge because imagination won’t have boundaries so by imagination the knowledge also won’t have boundaries. Imagination has no age. Imagination takes us from everywhere. The reality is only for those people who lack their imagination.

Then what is Experience? Experience is the teacher of all the things. The only source of knowledge experiences and at the same time, the only source of experience is imagination.

In order to gain the experience the person should have the imagination for example without imagination, the Graham Bell can’t invent the phone. By the imagination, he invented the phone so the persons who gained the experience by using it they invented the wireless phones and by the knowledge of the wireless phone android phones are invented.

Image result for nothing teaches us better than our own experiences

Good advice comes from the bad experience. And the experienced person only called as the wisdom person. So the person to be called as the wisdom person firstly the root thing he has to be imaginative.

If you have the experience automatically your confidence builds up. So for all these things there should not be worry and negativity in our minds.  By this, our imagination is misused.

THE JALLIKKATTU JAB

0

Jallikkattu is the valorous native sport of Tamilians wherein the bulls are embraced and tamed by men. This cultural sport has been around in practice for more than 5000 years. As the name suggests, jalli means bull and kattu means embrace. This heroic sport is also called as aeru thazhudhal or manju virattu. In fact, in the olden days, women would choose those valorous men who fearlessly tame the ferocious bulls to be their husbands.

In the year 2006, animal welfare activists started to raise their voice against the game and the judiciary, even after allowing the sport, framed a lot of rules and regulations for the onslaught of the game in the name of guidelines. In 2008, something similar took place and  after immense debate, IN THE FOLLOWING YEAR, the TN REGULATION OF JALLIKKATTU ACT 2009 was passed.

In May 2014, the apex court of the country banned Jalikkattu altogether, slamming those laws laid down by the state government of Tamil Nadu, in favour of PETA India. And what is this PETA?  An American animal welfare organization. R.I.P sovereignty, a foreign organization is here to teach us morality without knowing a single thing properly about our culture.

Even after the residents of Tamil Nadu and the state government filed petitions and to reconsider reviewing the stay and the judgement, the Supreme Court rejected them outright. After this stay order was given, the Jallikkattu happening in over 3000 venues fell down to just 24, leading to overcrowding of bulls in the venues.

On 8th January 2016, after long protests, innumerable postcards and letters to various people in authority including the Prime Minister, urging to pass a Bill allowing the game of bulls to resume, the Supreme Court finally lifted up the ban on the heroic sport, agitating the animal welfare groups and activists. The top court rejected the plea by PETA India on the 12th of January. Eventually, a stay was ordered. There was a strict ban by the apex court on November 2016 on account of which the protest have been ongoing.

As per the arguments put forth by the “Activists,” the bulls are harassed and assaulted. But, nothing of that sort ever happens in the sport. Or at least after the passing of the Regulation of Jallikkattu Act 2009. Taking a clear look at all the clauses of the Act, one can conclude:

(a) The respective district Collectors are given with complete authority and responsibility of the event.
(b) The interest of both the bulls and the participants are well attended to in the rules, guidelines, etc.
  • THE BULLS- Only bulls registered with the Animal Welfare Board of India will be allowed to contest. A medical test will be conducted by certified panel of Vets to make sure they are not intoxicated. This test is carried out even after the game is done to check for any wounds/intoxication. There are a lot of rules and regulations to be followed to tame them and even bring the bulls inside the venue.Image result for jallikattu
  • THE PARTICIPANTS- They are also supposed to undergo medical tests before and after playing the sport to check for intoxication /injuries. Only physically and mentally fit men between the age of eighteen and forty can take part. They will have to wear an exclusive costume for the event and will be provided with identification cards by the Collector himself.
  • THE ORGANIZERS- They will have to seek permission from the District collector at least 30 days before the event. The permission will be given only of the event had been organized by the concerned person for the last five consecutive years. He needs to deposit a sum of at least two lakh rupees with the Collector to meet out with any causality as a result of the game. He should also make sure that the venue is safe.
  • THE VENUE- The venue will be double barricaded ( at least six feet tall) for safety reasons. Only those number of spectators prescribed by the PWD shall be allowed to watch the sport from a safe distance. The venue will have an ambulance, a fire service van and enough policemen.
  • THE EVENT- The event should take place under the compulsory supervision of the District Collector or to the least the Deputy Collector, the Superintendent of Police and Animal Welfare Activists. The whole event should be video graphed so that the Collector is in a position to produce it as proof whenever asked for

The ban on Jallikkattu has a deplorable effect on the whole economy. With the introduction of modern agricultural equipment like tractors, the bulls at present are used only for sports such as this and reproduction. With a ban in any such sports, the bull population will fall immensely, pushing us to the state of importing sex-selective semen to be inseminated into the bodies of cows for reproduction. This will:

(a) lead to the extinction of native breeds. As such, with the introduction of agricultural equipment like tractors and alternates for transportation bulls are used only for sports and mating. With the ban on any such sports, the value for these bulls will fall and lead to an eventual extinction. We will be pushed to import semen from abroad. The insemination of foreign sex-selective semen might affect the cows and cause them to not reproduce after a maximum of 2 generations. There’ll be no bulls after a decade or so and India, will have to beg for semen/milk abroad.

(b) will increase the price of milk, a staple good in India. The semen imported with a foreign tag is sure not a cheap product. The production will hence fall due to unaffordability. Since the production will be low and the demand growing, the prices will increase.

(c) will lead to a lot of health issues in both the cows and the consumers. Consumption of the milk produced by inseminated cows or those produced out of insemination might cause cronic diabetes and lactose intolerance.

(d) will pave way for corporates as none of the farmers and animal herders will be able to afford and inseminate their cows. Slowly, even those who will be able to afford it will be phased out, letting corporates set up dairy industries in the country.

If only the “Activists” are concerned about the ethical treatment of animals, it is necessary for them to know that about 70000 jallikkattu bulls were sent to the slaughter houses in Kerala and the way they are slaughtered to death will push any stone heart into gloom. There have been no deaths of bulls/ participants or any serious casualty especially after the Regulation of Jallikkattu Act of 2009 came into force.

It’s shocking as to how the SC is not looking on to the video graphed evidences or toughly inferring the game. The right way for the top court to go about this would perhaps be to set up commissions to conduct stakeholder surveys on the issue, hold discussions, go through the reports submitted by them and then come to a conclusion. This is mandatory under the Section B (5) of the Guidelines provided by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity. It is time for us to see through the open conspiracy that is being planned to fool us all over again.

5 Habit Routines from the Shastras

0
vedic

Habits make our lives better. We all know the importance of habits in business and in practical daily life. There are certain habits which reflect some financial support to our life while others are more suitable for the college students. In the 24 hour window we all share together, there are countless opportunities to execute a routine to better our everyday lives.

Shastras or the teachings from the sages from the previous generations reflect some of the core habits which over a long time help us building a solid foundation. However, there are instances when people ignore the words from the sages and would preferably follow what may seem like an act towards fulfillment of addiction. I think it is time we revisit the old teachings and look onto them from the eyes of a learned person. Here I present the five habits recommended by the Shastras and how they affect our lives today.

According to Shastras:

1. Many people have the habit of leaving their bathroom dirty after the morning shower. According to the Shashtras, by doing so, the place of moon in the horoscope goes into a really bad position. So, make it a point to clean your bathroom and wipe the floor once you are done.

Our home is a symbol of safety and every single place where we live or stay becomes a part of our life. Our bathroom is a place where we occasionally clean up and purify the body. If you see it from a different perspective, it is the place where we let go off the evil darkness and be ready to embrace the light. Cleaning the place every time you take a shower would help preserve the energy that lingers around all the day. This will help freshen your mood and make your morning better.

2. Second nasty habit that some of us need to get rid of is that of leaving behind a used utensil. As per the Shashtras, we must clean our plate as soon we are done using them. Some people also leave food on the plate, which is also categorized as an extremely bad habit.

Similar to the practice of leaving our bathroom dirty after we are done using it, you must make sure to clean the utensils when you are done eating food. Utensils, on which we place the food which ultimately replenishes our system with fresh energy must be respected. When you leave the plate or bowl in which we had food, dirty and messy, it symbolizes your lack of empathy and respect for the one who helped you sustain. According to Shastras, every move we make reflects our personality. This is just another incident when our behaviour and actions speak louder than words.

3. It is believed that if you don’t clean the utensils after eating, you will come under the bad influence of Saturn and moon. And, if you clean your plate after eating, Goddess Lakshmi bestows you with wealth and prosperity.

When you respect something meager than yourself, good things happen to you. There are many people and things around us all day. Observe the way we treat them. This act reflects our abilities and tells the world the kind of person we are. Shastras say, people who clean the utensils after eating food are bestowed with wealth and prosperity. The true insight lies in the fact that a person with pure respect for everyone is sure to attract wealth and prosperity than the one who disrespects.

4. Apart from these little rules, you also need to keep your household clean. As per Shastras and Vedas, always keep your footwear outside the house. It is also said that keeping your bed clean and clear is the easiest way to attract good luck.

Our footwear prevents us from the dirt that is spread across the world. It acts as a shield for our body. A clean and fresh body is a symbol for good personality. Keeping our bed clean and making arrangements to regularly clean the room will build a sense of confidence inside you. When people are confident, they work and perform well. When people work and perform well, they attract good luck.

5. However, you must clean the bed in the morning as tidying it at night can invite bad luck. In addition, it is believed that if you stay late at night, the moon in your horoscope (kundali) starts giving bad vibes.

Normally, sages recommend to do all the things which help you start your day and build up your energy in the morning. Mornings symbolizes the birth of hope and belief. It makes us want to do things we have been procrastinating for long time. Nights on the other hand, are more suitable for packing up the baggage and allowing your body to rest. The evil is dominant in the nights and any energy that flows is not used for building your self rather it makes you feel heavy. The cycle of your body begins in morning and ends at night. Making drastic changes in your life habits would affect your growth and future.

Reviewing Mirzaya

0

There is a lot to admire in Rakyesh Om Prakash Mehra’s directed flick Mirzaya, but coherent narratives and compelling characters are not among its trends. Based on the Punjabi folk tale of Mirza Sahiba, the movie written by Gulzar cuts between two timelines i.e. now and unknown where and when. In both timelines, debutante Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher, play star crossed lovers. The track rooted in an unspecified, game of thrones style settings, sees a scruffy warrior win some sort of archery competition against armour clad horsemen and make off with a visibly impressed queen. Unfolding largely in slow motion this scenario gets a tragic end. Sticking faithfully to the original folklore, it prompts why does she betray him.

The other track which places the same story within the context of modern day Rajasthan, features twelve year old sweethearts named Monish and Suchitra who were separated when Monish flees the city after committing heinous crime . Years later their love gets tested again when Suchitra discovers that Monish has been working as a stable boy at the estate of her fiancé, a prince played by Anuj Chaudhary. The director who blurred the lines between past and present so skilfully in Rang De  Basanti, has not been able to do the same in this film. The story does not sit convincingly in present day portions and key messages appears to be contrived. For a film inspired by legendary romance, it is disappointing that the lovers in the movie cannot quite set the screen on fire!

Both Harshvardhan and Saiyami have potential individually but they fail to display the passion required for the timeless love story that this film desperately wants to be! There is more heat between the dancers, in the sensuously choreographed song sequences, that pop-up in the movie at regular intervals. These highly stylised music videos which are set to meaningful lyrics by Gulzar and glorious folksy tunes by Shankar Ehsan Loy give this movie, a feel of completely musical. The other highlight of the film is ace cinematographer Pawel Dyllus exquisite lensing of both the Laddakh landscape against which the fantasy track unfolds, and the breathtaking expanses of Rajasthan desserts and palaces amidst which the other track unravels.

Talking about the cast, British actor Art Malik plays Suchitra’s police officer father, is a hoot as he is over-actimg in many scenes and has left the audience chuckling. The beautiful actress, Saiyami Kher has a striking presence on-screen and Harshvardhan Kapoor uses his piercing eyes to convey intensity. In the end Mirzaya is a missfire, despite its staggering ambitions and remarkable technical achievements.

RABIES – 100% FATAL DISEASE

0

Rabies is a viral disease which is 100% fatal that is when a person gets infected by this disease the death of the person is certain.  The causative agent of rabies is rhabdo virus. Rhabdovirus is a virus infecting mammals and belongs to rhabdoviridae family. Rhabdovirus is bullet shaped virus which can survive for weeks at 4°c.

How does it happen?

All warm blooded animals including man are susceptible for rabies infection. Man and dogs are intermediate susceptible to thus infection. New borne dogs are more susceptible to this infection than adult dogs. There are two types of rabies virus that is Street virus with long incubation period of 1-12 weeks and Fixed virus short incubation period of 6-7 days.

Rabies is a natural infection of many animals like dogs, bats, cats, foxes, wolves. But dogs, foxes and vampire bats are most important hosts. Human are most commonly infected by the bite of rabid dog or other Rabid infected animals. Saliva of the infected animal contains the virus. When that infected animal bites the human the Saliva containing rabies virus get deposited in the wound. The incubation period (time period between the entry of virus into the body to the initial appearance of sign and symptoms) of the virus is 1-3 months, or short as 10 days.

Now after that this rabies virus multiplies in the muscles or in the tissues near in site of entry. Initially it’s course of spread is centripetal that from peripheral nerves to central nervous system (CNS). Following infection of the CNS the virus spreads centrifugal again towards peripheral nerves and involves skeletal and myocardial muscles, adrenal gland and skin. Salivary gland invasion also occur as it is most important in transmitting to other animal or human. If the person treated with injections just after the bite by the animal than the person can survive.

How can rabies be diagnosed?

1. In humans

Diagnosis of the disease in humans can be done by corneal impression smears, facial skin biopsies, saliva or CSF.

2. In animals

Diagnosis of the disease in animals can be done by demonstration of negri bodies in brain, saliva etc.

Treatment or Prophylaxis

As soon as after the dog or infected animal bites the wound should be thoroughly washed with soap and water as soap inactivates the virus. After this wound is treated with quaternary ammonium compound or tincture iodine or alcohol and then should be hurried to the doctor. Treatment which can be done for prevention of this lethal disease can be done in two forms that is pre-exposure treatment or pre-exposure treatment. Pre-exposure treatment is necessary for those who work in laboratories and for those who handle infected animals. Whereas post-exposure treatment includes local treatment, hyperimmune serum and vaccination.

Prevention and control

Prevention and control of it can be done by vaccinating animals, elimination of stray dogs, educating people regarding care of dogs and prevention of rabies.
