Languages in new Zealand

New Zealand has three official languages; English, Maori and Sign Language of New Zealand (NZSL). In 1987, Te Reo Maori was made an official language. In 2006, NZSL, the deaf community’s main language in New Zealand, became an official language.

With only 3.7% of the Maori-speaking population, the language is at risk of extinction. Authorities are working to ensure that this does not happen by implementing Maori classes in schools and television channels that broadcast exclusively in Maori.

Studying in New Zealand would be a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in a culture of history, picking up some Maori and NZSL language. Most courses are available in English.

If your native language is not English, you may need to prove that your English skills meet the standards of teaching. If you don’t, institutions are commonly offering language programs to improve their skills. If you want more information about this, please contact your institution.
