Yummy Indian breakfast recipes to try out

Breakfast is an important meal of the day. If we have a tasty breakfast, then we have a good start to the day. There are some breakfast recipes that we love to eat. What if you could make those dishes at home? We can prepare delicious breakfast at home.

Poori and Potato fry

This is a popular breakfast in India. Poori tastes best with any potato dish. Potato fry is yummy and this combination tastes very good.

Ingredients of Poori and Potato fry breakfast recipe –

  1. Potato – At least 1
  2. Oil – 2 tablespoons and 1 teaspoon
  3. Salt – To taste
  4. Turmeric powder – 1 teaspoon
  5. Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
  6. Wheat flour – At least 1 cup
  7. Water to knead the flour
  8. Oil for frying Poori

Method –

  1. For making poori, you can use only wheat flour or only refined flour. Or you can use wheat flour and refined flour in any proportion. I used only wheat flour in making poori.
  2. In a mixing bowl, put flour, bit of salt, 1 teaspoon of oil and mix them. Use water as much as required for kneading the dough. Make a stiff dough and cover it for some time.
  3. Cut potato into thin slices and dip it in a bowl containing water. Make sure that the starch gets removed.
  4. Heat a pan and put 2 tablespoons of oil. Add Cumin seeds and let them crackle.
  5. Add the potato slices and fry well. Then put salt and turmeric powder to it. Mix well so that the potato slices become soft. Keep the potato fry aside.
  6. Now make small balls from the dough. Roll those balls using rolling board and pin.
  7. Heat a pan and put sufficient oil to it. Fry the pooris in oil till they puff and turn brown. Remove all pooris to utensil.
  8. Serve the pooris hot along with potato fry.

Corn Upma

We all like eating sweet corn. Imagine how delicious Upma will taste when it is cooked with corn. You can eat this with any chutney or sauce.

Ingredients of Corn Upma breakfast recipe

  1. Semolina (Raw Suji) – 1 cup
  2. Oil – 4 tablespoons
  3. Mustard seeds – 1 teaspoon
  4. Curry leaves – Few
  5. Chilli – 1 or 2
  6. Corn – Half cup
  7. Peanuts – 1 tablespoon
  8. Water – 3 cups
  9. Lemon juice – 1 teaspoon
  10. Chilli powder – Half teaspoon
  11. Salt – To taste

Method –

  1. Chop the chilli. The corn should be boiled. You can use either frozen corn or remove seeds from a maize.
  2. Heat a pan and put 3 tablespoons of oil. Add Semolina to it. Mix very well till its colour changes to brown. Keep it aside.
  3. In another pan, heat 1 tablespoon of oil. Add mustard seeds, curry leaves, chilli and peanuts. Let them crackle.
  4. Add salt, chilli powder, water, corn and lemon juice. Gradually put Semolina to it, stirring continuously.
  5. Mix it very well and serve hot.

Dal Pakwan

This is a delicious breakfast. It consists of dal and pakwan, which is crispy. You can eat this Dal with chapati, paratha and poori also.

Ingredients of Dal Pakwan breakfast recipe

  1. Chana Dal or Bengal Gram – 1.25 cup
  2. Water – 2.5 cups
  3. Salt – 1 and half teaspoon
  4. Turmeric powder – Half teaspoon
  5. Chilli – 2
  6. Oil – 2 tablespoons
  7. Coriander leaves – 1 tablespoon
  8. Cumin seeds – 2 teaspoons
  9. Kasuri Methi – 1 teaspoon
  10. Asafoetida (Hing) – a pinch
  11. Chilli powder – Half teaspoon
  12. Garam Masala – Half teaspoon
  13. Ajwain – 1 teaspoon
  14. Pepper powder – 1 teaspoon
  15. Wheat flour – 1.5 cups
  16. Refined flour – 1.5 cups

Method –

  1. Wash and soak the Chana Dal in water for 2 hours. Then drain the water and keep dal aside. Chop the chillies.
  2. In a pressure cooker, take this dal and add water. Put 1 teaspoon of salt and turmeric powder to it. Pressure cook for 2 whistles.
  3. After it gets cooked, check the grains of dal. They should be cooked yet separate.
  4. Heat a pan and put 1 and half tablespoon of oil to it. Then add 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds, chilli and Asafoetida.
  5. Slowly pour the cooked dal into the pan. Add chilli powder, garam masala, kasuri methi and mix very well.
  6. Simmer for few minutes. Then garnish with coriander leaves.
  7. In a mixing bowl put wheat flour, refined flour, ajwain, 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds, pepper powder, half teaspoon of salt and half tablespoon of oil.
  8. Mix them and add water in small amounts. Knead to a semi-soft dough. Keep it covered for some time.
  9. Make small balls from the dough. Roll those balls using rolling board and pin. Prick the pakwan with a fork. Pricking is needed to make the pakwan crisp.
  10. Heat a pan and put sufficient oil to it. Fry the pakwan in oil till they turn brown. Remove all pakwan to utensil.
  11. Serve the pakwan hot along with dal.

Bread Upma

We usually eat bread with some accompaniment or eat sandwich. It’s upma is very tasty. You can eat this with any chutney or sauce.

Ingredients of Bread Upma breakfast recipe

  1. Bread – 12 slices
  2. Oil – 3 teaspoons
  3. Mustard seeds (Rai) – Half teaspoon
  4. Curry leaves – few
  5. Onion – Half
  6. Chilli – 1
  7. Tomato – 2
  8. Turmeric powder – Half teaspoon
  9. Chilli powder – Half teaspoon
  10. Salt – 1 teaspoon
  11. Water – 2 tablespoons
  12. Chopped vegetables – 1 cup
  13. Coriander leaves – 1 tablespoon

Method –

  1. You can use any vegetables of your choice. I used capsicum and carrot.
  2. Cut the bread slices into small pieces. Chop onion, tomatoes and chilli.
  3. Heat a pan and put oil. Add mustard seeds, curry leaves and chilli. Let them crackle.
  4. Put onion to it and fry till the raw smell disappears. Then add tomatoes to it. Sautee till the tomatoes turn soft.
  5. Add salt, turmeric powder and chilli powder to it. Mix very well. Then add the chopped vegetables.
  6. Put water to it and stir. Cover the pan and simmer for few minutes. Add the bread pieces to it. Mix well so that the bread pieces absorb masala.
  7. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.

Sabudana Khichdi

Sabudana or Tapioca is usually eaten while fasting. But you can have this delicious breakfast anytime if you like Tapioca. You can eat this with any chutney or sauce.

Ingredients of Sabudana Khichdi breakfast recipe

  1. Sabudana – 1 cup
  2. Oil – 2 tablespoons
  3. Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
  4. Chilli – 1
  5. Peanuts – 2 tablespoons
  6. Potato – 1
  7. Tomato – 1
  8. Carrot – Half
  9. Salt – 1 teaspoon
  10. Lemon juice – 1 teaspoon
  11. Coriander leaves – 1 tablespoon
  12. Curry leaves – Few

Method –

  1. In a large bowl, soak sabudana in sufficient water for 3 hours. The size of tapioca pearls increases and comes up to the water level.
  2. Drain off the sabudana and keep it aside. Boil potato and chop after it gets boiled.
  3. Chop tomato, carrot, chilli and coriander leaves. Roast the peanuts in a pan.
  4. Heat a pan and put oil in it. Put cumin seeds, curry leaves and chilli. Let them crackle.
  5. Add potato, carrot and tomato to it. Fry for some time. Put salt and peanuts.
  6. Mix very well and add sabudana. Combine it along with other ingredients but do not mash it. Simmer for few minutes.
  7. Sabudana turns translucent after it gets cooked. Add lemon juice to it and mix.
  8. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.

Peas Upma

This is a tasty breakfast. It can be made from fresh peas or frozen peas.

The recipe of peas upma is same as that of corn upma. The only difference is in the main ingredient. Peas have to be boiled for making upma. All the other 10 ingredients remain same. Please see the recipe of corn upma for the method. You have to cook similarly.
