Dal is a healthy dish that is good for people of all ages. It is good if we eat Dal regularly. Some of us do not like eating plain Dal, so I have some Dal recipes which are tasty. After eating those dishes of Dal, you will like it. These Dal recipes do not need too much time and too many ingredients for cooking. You can cook these dishes whenever you want at your home.
Methi Dal
This is a lip-smacking dish of dal sauteed with fenugreek leaves and spices. You can eat this with rice, chapati, paratha or puri.
Ingredients –
- Fenugreek leaves (Methi) – 1 bunch
- Oil – 2 tablespoons
- Arhar Dal (Toor Dal) – 1 cup
- Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds – 1 teaspoon
- Asafoetida (Hing) – A pinch
- Curry leaves – Few
- Garlic – Few cloves
- Onion – 1
- Tomato – 1
- Chili – 1
- Salt – According to taste
- Turmeric powder – Half teaspoon
- Chili powder – Half teaspoon
- Water – As needed
Method –
- You can use any type of Dal that you want. I had Arhar Dal so I used that.
- Rinse and clean Arhar Dal. Then put it in a pressure cooker and add water to it. Cook for few whistles. The dal should be cooked but ensure it is not cooked too much.
- Chop onion, chili, garlic and tomato finely. Heat a pan and put oil to it. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, curry leaves and asafoetida to it. Let them splutter.
- Put garlic, onion and chili to it. Fry till the raw smell disappears. Then add tomato and saute well. Saute till tomato turns mushy.
- Add salt, turmeric powder and chili powder to it. Mix very well. Put fenugreek leaves and fry well. Saute till the leaves shrink in size.
- Mix properly so that all ingredients combine with each other. Then add cooked Dal to it. Stir well and check the consistency.
- Add water and cover the pan. Simmer for few minutes so that dal gets the flavour of fenugreek leaves. Remove cover and stir. Serve it hot.

Palak Dal
This is a delicious dish of dal sauteed with spinach and spices. You can eat this with rice, chapati, paratha or puri.
Ingredients –
- Spinach (Palak) – 1 bunch
- Arhar Dal (Toor Dal) – 1 cup
- Oil – 2 tablespoons
- Ginger – Small piece
- Chili – 1
- Garlic – Few cloves
- Tomato – 1
- Salt – According to taste
- Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder – Half teaspoon
- Chili powder – Half teaspoon
- Coriander powder – Half teaspoon
- Cumin powder – Half teaspoon
- Garam masala – Half teaspoon
- Water – As needed

Dal Fry and Jeera Rice
Dal fry is a tasty dish which you can have in lunch and dinner. You can eat dal fry with any other dish. I had cooked Jeera rice also so I have this combination. You can eat dal fry with any rice item, chapati, paratha or puri and jeera rice with any dal, curry, fry or raita.
Ingredients –
- Arhar Dal (Toor Dal) – 1 cup
- Water – As needed for dal and rice
- Salt – According to taste
- Oil – 1 tablespoon
- Cumin seeds – 2 teaspoons
- Mustard seeds – 1 teaspoon
- Dried red chili – 1
- Curry leaves – Few
- Asafoetida (Hing) – A pinch
- Garlic – Few cloves
- Onion – 1
- Ginger – Small piece
- Chili – 1
- Tomato – 1
- Turmeric powder – Half teaspoon
- Chili powder – Half teaspoon
- Coriander powder – Half teaspoon
- Garam masala – Half teaspoon
- Kasuri methi – Half teaspoon
- Ghee – 1 tablespoon
- Rice – 1 cup
Method –
- Rinse and clean Arhar Dal. Then put it in a pressure cooker and add water to it. Cook for few whistles. The dal should be cooked but ensure it is not cooked too much.
- Chop onion, ginger, chili, garlic and tomato finely. Heat a pan and put oil to it. Add 1 teaspoon cumin seeds, mustard seeds, curry leaves, dried red chili and asafoetida to it. Let them splutter.
- Put garlic, onion, ginger and chili to it. Fry till the raw smell disappears. Then add tomato and saute well. Saute till tomato turns mushy.
- Add salt, turmeric powder, chili powder and coriander powder to it. Mix very well. Then add cooked Dal to it. Stir very well.
- Check the consistency of dal. Add water and cover the pan. Simmer for few minutes so that dal becomes smooth. Remove cover and stir.
- Put garam masala and kasuri methi to it. Mix properly so that all ingredients combine with each other. Serve it hot.
- I had cooked Jeera rice in pan. But you can cook it in pressure cooker also.
- Soak the rice in water for half an hour and then boil it. Keep the steamed rice aside.
- Heat a pan and put ghee to it. Add 2 teaspoons cumin seeds to it. Let them splutter. Put cooked rice and salt. Mix very well so that cumin seeds spread evenly in rice.
- Mix gently so that the rice grains do not break. Serve it hot.

Masala Khichdi
This is an appetizing dish of dal cooked with rice, herbs and spices. You can eat this with any curry, fry, dal or raita.
Ingredients –
- Moong Dal – 1 cup
- Rice – 1 cup
- Ghee – 2 tablespoons
- Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
- Asafoetida (Hing) – A pinch
- Garlic – Few cloves
- Ginger – Small piece
- Chili – 1
- Onion – 1
- Tomato – 1
- Salt – According to taste
- Turmeric powder – Half teaspoon
- Chili powder – Half teaspoon
- Coriander powder – Half teaspoon
- Water – As needed
- Peanuts (Groundnuts) – 1 tablespoon
Method –
- Soak dal and rice in water for at least half an hour. Chop onion, ginger, chili, garlic and tomato finely.
- Heat a pressure cooker and put ghee to it. Add cumin seeds, asafoetida, chili, ginger and garlic to it. Let them splutter.
- Then put peanuts and onion to it. Fry till the raw smell disappears. Then add tomato and saute well.
- Put salt, turmeric powder, chili powder and coriander powder to it. Mix very well. Then add dal and rice to it. Mix well and add water.
- Mix properly so that all ingredients combine with each other. Put the lid of pressure cooker and cook for few whistles.
- Remove lid and mix gently. Check the consistency of Khichdi. If it is watery, then mix it at high flame. Serve it hot.
