Moong Dal is a lentil which has numerous health benefits. Ideally, Moong Dal must be included in the diet everyday. There are some recipes which make Moong Dal tasty and you will want to eat those dishes. You can prepare those Moong Dal dishes whenever you want at home. They do not need too many ingredients. Follow these recipes to have healthy food regularly.
Moong Dal Khichdi and Achari Aloo
It is a yummy combination of Khichdi and spicy potato dish. You may try some other combination with Moong Dal Khichdi.
Ingredients –
- Rice – 1 cup
- Moong Dal – 1 cup
- Vegetables – 2 cups
- Chili – 4
- Tomato – 3
- Ginger – A piece
- Ghee – 4 tablespoons
- Cumin Seeds – 1 teaspoon
- Bay leaf – 2
- Salt – According to taste
- Turmeric powder – 1 teaspoon
- Water – 4 cups
- Maggi Masala ae Magic – 2 sachets
- Potato – 3
- Oil – 2 tablespoons
- Mustard Seeds – 1 teaspoon
- Fennel Seeds – 1 teaspoon
- Onion – 1
- Garlic – Few cloves
Method for Moong Dal recipes
- You can use any vegetables of your choice and according to availability. I had used carrot, cabbage and potato for Moong Dal Khichdi.
- Chop vegetables, 2 chili, 1 tomato and small piece of ginger finely. Rinse and soak rice and Moong Dal in water. Heat a pressure cooker and put ghee in it.
- Add cumin seeds, bay leaves, chili and ginger to it. Let them splutter. Add tomato and cook till it turns mushy. Then put vegetables and saute for some time.
- Add salt, Turmeric powder and mix well. Put rice and Moong Dal to it. Saute for some time. Add water and cook for few minutes.
- Put 1 sachet of Maggi Masala ae Magic and mix properly. Close the pressure cooker and pressure cook for 1 whistle. Remove cover and check whether it has cooked or not.
- Cut potatoes in small pieces. Chop 2 chili, 2 tomatoes, garlic, onion and small piece of ginger finely. Heat a pan and put oil in it.
- Add Mustard seeds and Fennel seeds to it. Let them splutter. Put chili, ginger, garlic and onion to it. Fry well till the raw smell disappears.
- Put tomatoes and saute till it turns mushy. Add potato and cook for few minutes. Then put salt and Maggi Masala ae Magic. Mix well so that all the ingredients get combined.
- Cover the pan and simmer for some minutes so that potato gets cooked. Remove cover and mix properly. Serve Moong Dal Khichdi with Achari Aloo hot.

Moong Dal Halwa
This is a delicious dessert of Moong Dal. You can eat this after lunch or dinner.
Ingredients –
- Moong dal – 1 cup
- Water – As needed
- Suji (Rava or Semolina) – 1 tablespoon
- Ghee – Half cup
- Milk – 2 cups
- Sugar – 1 cup
- Dry fruits – According to taste
- Cardamom (Elaichi) – Few pods
Method –
- You can use any dry fruits of your choice. I used almonds, cashews and raisins for this. I chopped almonds and cashews and fried all dry fruits in ghee.
- In Cardamom, remove the husk and crush the seeds in mortar and pestle. The powder should be fine. You may use powdered sugar but whole sugar will also dissolve in the dessert.
- Rinse Moong dal and soak in sufficient water for at least 2 hours. Drain off water and transfer Moong dal to a blender. Blend to a slightly coarse paste adding water if needed.
- Heat a pan and put ghee to it. Add Suji and mix properly till it turns aromatic. Put Moong dal paste and mix till Moong dal absorbs ghee and changes colour.
- Cook till the mixture turns crisp. Make sure there is no lump. Add milk and mix till the mixture absorbs milk.
- Then put sugar and mix properly till it dissolves completely in the mixture. Add dry fruits, Cardamom powder and mix well.
- Cook till the mixture separates from the pan and gives aroma. Serve it hot or cold according to taste preference.

Moong Dal Khichdi and Raw Banana Fritter
This is an appetizing combination of Khichdi and crispy raw banana fritters. You may try some other combination with Moong Dal Khichdi.
Ingredients –
- Rice – 1 cup
- Moong Dal – Half cup
- Tomato – 1
- Water – 4 cups
- Ghee – 4 tablespoons
- Onion – 1
- Peanuts – Half cup
- Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder – 1 teaspoon
- Cloves – Few
- Cinnamon – A stick
- Cardamom – Few
- Bay leaf – 2
- Asafoetida (Hing) – Little
- Pepper powder – Half teaspoon
- Raw Banana – Few depending on size
- Besan (Chickpea flour or Gram flour) – 1 cup
- Salt – According to taste
- Chili powder – Half teaspoon
- Chili – 1 or 2
- Baking Soda – A pinch
- Oil – As required for frying fritters
Method –
- Chop onion and tomato finely. Rinse and soak rice and Moong dal in water. Heat a pressure cooker and put ghee in it.
- Add cumin seeds, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom and bay leaves to it. Let them splutter. Put peanuts and onion. Fry well till the raw smell disappears.
- Add tomato and cook till it turns mushy. Add salt, a pinch of Asafoetida, half teaspoon Turmeric powder, Pepper powder and mix well.
- Put rice and Moong Dal to it. Saute for some time. Add water and cook for few minutes. Mix properly so that all the ingredients get combined.
- Close the pressure cooker and pressure cook for 1 whistle. Remove cover and check whether it has cooked or not.
- Rinse the raw bananas and then peel them. Cut the bananas into 2 or 3 pieces horizontally. Then cut into vertical slices from each banana piece.
- Take a bowl and put water in it. Place the chopped raw banana pieces in it so that their color remains intact. Chop chili finely.
- In a large mixing bowl, put raw banana pieces, chili, besan, salt, baking soda, half teaspoon turmeric powder, chili powder, a pinch of Asafoetida and mix them.
- Add water carefully as required for making the batter. The batter should not be too thick or too thin. Ensure that the batter is medium-thick. Mix it very well.
- Heat a pan and put sufficient oil for frying. Add batter coated raw banana pieces in hot oil. Flip the fritters in oil and fry till they get cooked and turn brown.
- Fry the remaining batter coated raw banana pieces in batches. Deep fry so that they become crisp. Remove the fritters from pan.
- Serve Moong Dal Khichdi with Raw Banana fritters hot.
Combination with Khichdi –
You can try any combination with Moong Dal Khichdi. Since I had cooked the particular side dishes at that time, so I have mentioned their recipes also. You can eat Khichdi with any raita, salad, fry, fritter, curry or dal. If you do not have much time, then you may prepare only Khichdi as it is a wholesome meal. Similarly you can eat these side dishes with any other dish.
