MG Marg – The Focal Point

MG Marg is one of the awesome shopping and cultural activity streets in Gangtok. M.G Road is one of the fascinating places to spend few nights, there winding side alleys hide some unexpected gems, a pleasant place to take a stroll. The road and the area around it has transformed rapidly over the years. It is now more like a long stretch of open mall and boulevard square where locals and tourists take leisure stroll.

The New Market area of M.G Marg is Gangtok’s pedestrianised city centre. Central of Gangtok locals life where residents shops, eat and socialise. Steeped lanes adjoining the market lead to other central areas of Lal Market and Old Market. Gangtok is small and very simple to navigate. The central taxi stand is located near the entrance at the pedestrian area (on the main road passing through the city).

This is Gangtok’s local Tibetan Buddhist monastery. A monastery I find unique and different to the famous of Sikkim. While others act as remote sanctuaries away from urban lifes; Enchey Monastery embraces it’s as a trickle of the merit makers come and go from the compound and Spinningprayer wheels along the way.

Most of the tourists travel to Gangtok for the Sikkim mountain views. Views which we failed to find in September. If you plan for snapping Kangchenjunga’s snowy peaks comes between October and June. There was no snow during yours visit but a whole lot of cloud (perfect for the clouds lover). We did take the few excursions. Rumtek monastery and Pal Zurmang monastery during a local tours of Sikkim. The extensive tour was to Changu Lake (need permits in advance) where the drive was in fact more exciting; controlled the landslides and unique local life amongst the highlights. Another tour was an overnight stay at the Temi Tea Gardens and also the tea factory tour. If you plan this tour then it is a best to stay on site at the Cherry Resort.
