Mussoorie – The Lover’s Point of India!

0
Panchchuli Peaks near Munsiyari Uttarakhand

Don’t be disappointed with the title even if you are single, because Mussoorie is not just the lover’s point for lovebirds, but also nature-lovers, adventure-lovers, travel-lovers and food-lovers. It’s no surprise that the great English author Ruskin Bond decided to settle in this town for inspiration, back in 1963, and still continues to live there. Popularly called, ‘The Queen of Hills’ in India, Mussoorie is located at an altitude of approximately 2000 meters, in the state of Uttarakhand in North India.

Before you rush in to pack your bags and get set go for it, I would like you to take a brief journey through this article, so as to be able to enjoy your trip better.

So here’re the basics that you need to know before you embark on your journey to visit the Queen.

1. How to get there

Mussoorie is a hill station located in the hills of the Garhwal Himalayan ranges, in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is a 35 km uphill drive from the state capital Dehradun to Mussoorie.

Now, unlike you might think, it is pretty easy to get to this place.

You just need to book yourself on a train to Dehradun and once there, you could hire a ride to Mussoorie. Alternatively, you could board a flight to Delhi, and then take the train Jan Shatabdi in the afternoon, that would drop you at Dehradun just before mid-night. However, I would suggest that you get to Delhi, by rail or by air, and then hire/rent a car all the way to Mussoorie, as this would allow you to enjoy the scenic north Indian highway, crossing several breath-taking dams and grabbing some superb butter paneer, dal makhani and butter naan on the way!

Note: It is highly recommended that you undertake the uphill journey at a time when there’s sufficient light, if you really wish to enjoy the pristine forests.

2. Where to stay

There are umpteen numbers of hotels in Mussoorie, ranging from luxurious resorts to budget hotels. However, what you really need to consider while checking-in to a hotel is its location. We suggest that you select a hotel closer to the Mall road or the Library Bazaar, which would allow you an easy access to the main town and marketplaces.

HACKSAW RIDGE Because heroes don’t take lives but save them

0
hacksaw ridge

“Corporal Desmond Doss, I hereby state that I have received an application for allowing you to go in War in Okinawa without the use of any weapon. Are you sure you want to do this?” These were the final words from the Commanding Officer of Desmond Doss. But who knew, that one day the same guy would be honored by the Hollywood in such a way.

“Hacksaw Ridge” is based on the life of conscientious objector Corporal Desmond Doss who saved the lifes of hundreds in Okinawa during World War 2. He was also the first conscientious objector in the world to be honoured with the Guard of Honour for his honorary services to his nation.

The movie is directed by Mel Gibson with the screenplay of Arthur Knight, Robert Schenkkan and Randall Wallace. Andrew Garfield is seen in the lead role as Desmond Doss. Teresa Palmer,Vince Vaughn,Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey and Hugo Weaving will be seen in the side roles. The project is under the banner of Cross Creek Pictures who are counting heavily on this as this is the only project they may have this year.

The overall budget for the project was 55 million. The movie was shot in New York and other parts of Japan for the war scenes. Well, the timing of the movie is under question when both US and Japan are trying to sort their age old differences and such a war based movie may give Donald Trump a new reason to debate for ongoing election campaign.( Pun Intended)

hacksawridge_markrogers_d0a9525

And it’s not just the story or the hero that people wanna know about. What’s surprising is Andrew Garfield stood up for such a role. We have seen him in other films playing romantic, childlike, funny roles, the best being the role of Peter Parker in “The Amazing Spiderman” series. When asked about this, he said” Yeah it was difficult, obviously. I am not used to such roles. But then, you are an actor and you have to stand up, adapt as per the demands of the role. Gibson asked me to be patient, talk less and work more on generating emotions rather than humour. So it is on the flip side of the roles I have done till now. I will miss that humour part for sure.” But, we can see from the trailer that he did worked on his looks for the role. The transition from the young high school boy charms to a weather beaten soldier face is truly commendable.

Even during the promotions, director Mel Gibson never stopped complimenting Garfield for his dedication. He said,” Well, he was definitely dedicated. I heard he can do only “funny” roles. I even asked him if he is sure he can do this. He asked for a week’s time and when he presented me the part, it was no less than perfect for me.”

Talk about heroes and we think of firing bullets, swords, superpowers etc. But Desmond Doss was different as he promoted the idea of saving lives for his nation rather than taking them. And thus , Hacksaw Ridge is a must watch for this guy, gave a new definition as to what our heroes would be like.

An untold story 0f Steve Jobs(Steven Paul Jobs)

0
STEVE JOBS

Joanne is Steve Jobs biological mother and his biological father is Abdulfattah .When Joanne was pregnant   Joanne and Abulfattah   both were twenty-three, due to some problems they decided not to get married. Joanne travelled to San Francisco, where she was taken into the care of kindly doctor who sheltered unwed mothers,  delivered their babies and quietly arrange adoptions.

Steve’s mother Joanne had a requirement that her child must be adopted by college graduates. So the doctor arranged the baby to be placed with a lawyer and his wife but things never happen as we presume the baby boy  was  born –on February 24,1955-the designated couple wanted a girl and backed out . Thus it was the baby boy who came out he became the son not of lawyer but of a high school dropout with passion for mechanics –Paul and his wife working as a book keeper –Clara. Paul and Clara named their baby –Steven Paul Jobs. Clara Steve jobs mother has been married before marrying Steve’s father and her husband died in war. When Joanne(Steve’s biological mother) found out that her baby had been placed with a couple who had not even graduated from high school   she refused to sign in adoption papers until the couple promised her that they will send Steve to college .

Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs know from his early age that he was adopted his parents very open about that he had vivid memory of sitting on the lawn of his house, when he was six or seven years old, telling the girl  who lived across the street “so does that mean your real parents  doesn’t want you ” and he rushed  into house ,crying and his parents put an emphasis on every word in that sentence so Steve was Abandoned. Chosen. Special.

SCHOOL

Steve was different from other students in class .Even before Steve started his elementary school. His mother taught him how to read. This however, lead to some serious problems once he got to school he was bored sitting in classes and listening to the stuff he already known  so he occupied himself by getting into trouble .

His school, Monta Loma Elementary  ,was  four blocks from his house. He encountered his boredom by playing pranks. His school best friend was Rick Ferrentino these both do all the mess in their class with nasty pranks.

He wants to go to Newyork   if he had done that his life would be different and ours too. When his parents pushed him to go to college, he responded In a passive-aggressive way. He did not consider state schools and he  didn’t  want to go to Standford he thought that the kids  kids who went to Stanford, they already knew what they Wanted to do, they weren’t really artistic. He wanted something that was more artistic and interesting.Instead he insisted on applying only to Reed College, a private liberal arts school in Portland,Oregon,  that was one of the most expensive in the nation.

ODD COUPLE

Steve and Woz(Stephen Wozaink) became friends due to their pranks and passion for art of electronics. Wozaik  spent a lot of time at home reading his father’s electronics journals, he built two  hundred transistors 10   circuits in It won top prize in a local contest run by the Air Force.

Woz was  more of a lone than the boys of his age  he was not same as Steve  apart from pranks. Woz In Twelfth grade he built an a toy type bomb in the school locker and he is confronted to police for that and in prison  He taught the other prisoners how to disconnect the wires leading to the ceiling fans and connect them to the bars so people got shocked when touching them. Getting shocked was a badge of honor for Woz. He prided himself on being a hardware engineer, which meant that random shocks .

LOVE

Toward the end of his senior year at Homestead  Jobs started going out with a girl named Chrisann Brennan, who was about his age but still a junior. With her light brown hair, green eyes, high cheekbones, and she was very attractive . Future That Stop Dreaming

sadness

“There is sweetness to be found in the sorrow of parting-that is what they say. But is it always the case? It wasn’t for Tabassum. Not this time, not ever. She never got an option to choose for herself. She had always been forced upon with the decisions of Allah! That was the trend that ruled her life.

Today’s incident wasn’t of a different color either. But it was not cruel, it was Monstrous Something that the little soul of 15years did not know how to handle. She had always excelled in the art of submission and a fight back thence after. This time, she didn’t know how to act, react or do anything for the matter.Tabassum had lost her father in her early years of three. Her mother, Meher had been both her Ammi and Abbu since then. Rafiq, her dad, was a fisherman when he was living. Meher took up her better half’s job as her way of earning

Tabassum had lost her father in her early years of three. Her mother, Meher had been both her Ammi and Abbu since then. Rafiq, her dad, was a fisherman when he was living. Meher took up her better half’s job as her way of earning livelihood. Many of her so-called supporters during her lows, advised her to work as a maid or choose something more woman-like. But Meher promptly declined to the idea for she knew it was fishing she relied upon. How could she manage to go deep into the sea? Who cared? She didn’t! She was fine with it as long as she could get loads of fish back from the ocean to sell in the market and earn to feed Tabassum and send her to the village school, educate her in English.

Meher had full faith upon Tabassum. She truly believed that someday her daughter would go to the city school and have her higher education like that of the children belonging from the wealthy class. She kept imagining Tabassum in the school uniform with a brand new school bag and brand new books. What if she becomes a doctor? What a pride would that be for Meher! She had always planned of retiring from her going into deep waters once Tabassum is earning.

Now she could see her lovely daughter fulfilling her dreams. Last time Tabassum has come up to be First among all the other students of her class. Her teachers had often talked about how brilliant a student Tabassum was. Meher used to find her head give a spin and her face booming with pride. Rafiq had often told that Tabassum would be the one who would take her parents out of the nasty fish smelling slum. Meher trusted her husband. She knew that her husband couldn’t be wrong, no never! The day he did not come back from his daily tours to the ocean, she was devastated. Tabassum being so tiny did not even get a hint that she would never see her father again. She just saw her mother crying out profusely, holding her tight in the embrace of her arms. Meher has taken up all the pains possible, or even out of the possibilities of being a woman to bring up her only daughter. Tabassum has grown up seeing her mother struggle yet keep a broad smile on her face to avoid any questions from her. Being a kid, Tabassum was easily fooled by her mother with this tactical act of hers. But lately, Tabassum had outdone her mother in this wit. After all she was growing up, how could she miss out on the miseries of her mother? Meher had often referred to her father’s fishing as an immensely reputed job, just as the soldiers as it seemed sometimes. Yes! That was the way Meher used to glorify fishermanhood. Tabassum had some shaky, foggy and unclear images of her Abbu in her mind. She would often dream of him sailing into the deep green sea with a bright blue vacuum reigning above with fluffy white cottony clouds moving around. The only difference was his attire in peaceful white color and his boat of fine teak wood. He had an ear-to-ear smile that talked of no complains. That was the way Meher had often described her father’s existence in Jannat. She loved the air of whiteness around her father. She wished, she could touch Abbu, just one more time.

As Tabassum gradually grew up to be a beautiful girl with dusky complexion, straight nose, pearly eyes that were emerald in color and a beautiful smile that often gave her an angelic aura around her, her Ammi got worried about her protection. Such beauty in the house of slum dweller wasn’t supposed to be a sit-back case. Tabassum when gradually started understanding her Ammi’s concern, used to say, I will be fine Ammi. I will fight those evil people out!And with that, Meher would just smile and hug her daughter to her heart and Tabassum would smile either cause she knew there wont come a day ever when she will be fighting the world all by herself. Her Ammi would pounce before her. Meher was proud of her girl to be reading in the same class with her one year elder friends and topping the list. She has appeared for a scholarship test and Meher was eagerly looking forward to her results. She knew her daughter was too brilliant not to crack it.

Due to some unknown reason lately, however Tabassum wanted to go with her mother to the oceans. She always had an intense feeling of going deep into the sea where her mother says that the water changed colors. Her Ammi had often described how mesmerizing would the horizon look when the Sun move at a snail speed, sleep into the Ocean. She has often dreamt of going there. But recently the feeling has grown to some unknown heights. She requested her mother, but Meher declined to her proposal. Meher said her to sit back and study because the city school won’t be easy for her if she takes it for granted. Going out to the oceans is not her cup of tea.

“Who would receive the admission letter of the city school if we both aren’t available? You stay back at home and take care of the house, receive the letter and study harder, Meher said.

Today it was the same case as Tabassum pleaded to her mother a great deal. But as the daily ritual was, Meher promptly denied to take her along. She had this strong instinct that the letter might arrive today itself. Tabassum pleaded her heart out to her Ammi for some reason which Meher evaluated as her daughter’s growing stubbornness and mentally made a point to act a bit tough with her when she is back. She happily chose her love to be the culprit for her daughter’s behavior.

It was a Saturday and Tabassum’s Ammi had promised her to get back early from her tour, as per the traditions, the last night. It was around 11 in the morning when the admission letter of Tabassum to the city school arrived!! Tabassum was happy, extremely happy.. not just because she could go to the rich people’s school but because she knew that her Ammi will be happy. It also meant that Meher would not have to spare a single more penny for her daughter’s education cause Tabassum had earned it herself. It was a dream come true for either. Tabassum was simply overwhelmed with many kinds of positive vibes streaming into her – happiness, excitement, anxiety and that intense urge to see the smile on her Ammi’s. Tabassum knew that her Ammi wasn’t too happy when she left home in the morning. But she just knew everything was going to be okay.

The sun was already overhead, yet there wasn’t any sign of Meher. Ammi might have been stuck somewhere. Yes! She was stuck. Stuck somewhere far, faarr away.. Away from the world, away from the people who meant everything to her. To some distant land.

It was when the sun was setting, that Tabassum just heard her neighbor say, “Your Ammi will never be back, Tabbu! She did not get back from the oceans!

Tabassum felt her feet go numb. Nothing was registering in her head any longer. All that she could see, was a huge blackness. Something really void! She fumbled to find a feeling, an object, a sting, a click – anything, anything would do. She fell on her knees. She could not just feel anything, no emotions, no tears!

She just didn’t know for how long was she sitting there or what was she thinking. But it was when she looked out of the window and saw the Sun creeping under the sea, that she wailed, Alllaaaaahh!!

She could relate so much to Darkness now!

Need to overhaul India’s restrictive abortion law

Introduction to Abortion Laws in India

While India has come a long way since the time it has gained its independence in 1947, yet even today we find that India still lags far-behind from other nation-states when it comes to the provisions pertaining to abortion laws in the country. The current laws continues to remain stringent and critical and an immediate need for it being overhauled still lingers.  An American birth control activist and sex educator Margaret Sanger had famously said:

No woman can call herself free who does not own and control her body”.

The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 while introduced by the then health minister S Chandrasekhar as a step in the direction of the manumission of women does not give women the right to make this important decision with regards to abortion but places the decision-making in the hands of healthcare providers. Though times have changed tremendously yet this right has not been granted to the women of our democracy.

Abortion as being a part of Human Rights

It forms a part of a woman’s individual rights, which includes rights such as-right to her life, to her liberty, and to the pursuit of her happiness, that sanctions her right to have an abortion. A women’s reproductive and sexual health and shape her reproductive choices. Reproductive rights are internationally renowned as critical both to advancing women’s human rights and to promoting development.

In recent years, governments from all over the world have accredited and pledged to advance reproductive rights to an unprecedented degree. Ceremonial laws and policies of the country are crucial indicators of government commitment to promoting reproductive rights. Each and every women has an absolute right to have the control over her body, most often known as “bodily rights”.

Recent role of the Judiciary in overhauling the abortion laws in India

The Supreme Court of India has time and again tried its best to overhaul abortion laws and having said so it has reinterpreted the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971, in some cases, allowing petitioners to terminate pregnancies beyond the legal limit of 20 weeks. Recently, the Supreme Court permitted a rape survivor to terminate her pregnancy at 24 weeks, which is beyond the permissible 20 weeks limit prescribed as under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971. Their grounds were that continuing the pregnancy could greatly jeopardize her physical as well as the mental health of the woman.

In this instance, the Supreme Court directed the members of the appointed medical board to scrutinize the petitioner and the viability of the pregnancy. The board found that the foetus had multiple congenital anomalies and the sternness of these anomalies posed a momentous risk to the physical and mental health of the petitioner. Therefore, the medical board commended that the petitioner be allowed to not linger the pregnancy. Based on these valuable recommendations, the Supreme Court granted the petitioner approval to go ahead and terminate her pregnancy.

Former cases where the judiciary played a key role in refurbishing the abortion laws

This is not the first time that the Supreme Court has permitted a woman to abort a foetus older than 20 weeks. In 2015, the apex court reversed a decision by the Gujarat high court in a similar case. The Gujarat high court had denied permission to a 14-year-old rape survivor to abort her 25-week old foetus. However it is interesting to note that while delivering its verdict, the high court acknowledged the following grounds:

  • adverse physical
  • adverse  emotional and
  • psychological implications of the decision on the petitioner’s life

However, ultimately the honourable court chose to subscribe to the law. The girl then approached the Supreme Court, which recommended that a medical panel ought to examine the girl and decide whether the termination of pregnancy was in her best interests; if the panel was in favour of the abortion, then the girl could go ahead with the termination. Thereby we find that though the law expressly does not permit termination of pregnancy beyond the legal limit of 20 weeks, the judiciary has however time and again tried its best to overhaul this demeanour and help the woman to make the decision pertaining to abortion.
